My system's Ram is low. HP Pavilion s3407

I've had my computer for 12 years. I recently bought an external drive to backup my computer. Then I got this message on my computer that my system ram is low. But my computer wont backup to it because it is plugged into a usb port. What do I do?

drwen,
You have had it no longer than 4 years, as the HP s3407 series is circa2008.
It came with only 2GB of installed RAM, and is capable of only 4GB max.
Specs here    (two 2GB of PC2-6400 (800 MHz)
That will address your first question.
Please define how your attempting to make the backup., as usb is not a problem.

What memory modules can we use for RAM upgrade of HP Pavilion dv5-1198de??
    Max RAM?  Vista?  Windows 7?

I can't find a dv5-1198de but I did find a dv5-1198er which should be similiar. It states up to 8 gb of ram. HERE
I would try www.Crucial.com for suggested memory ,you can use their Scanner Tool to let it detect what you have and what you can upgrade/replace with.

  • The merge process could not allocate memory for an operation; your system may be running low on virtual memory. Restart the Merge Agent.

I encountered this problem on our SQL2012 and I have tried different scenarios (see below) to no avail. I have decided to give up and check if someone here has encountered this and resolved it.
One thing I know, it's not a memory issue. Both servers we're using has lots of memory to spare and we monitor the memory as the replication goes through it's steps.
I hope someone can help me on this. Thanks!
    The Error:
The merge process could not allocate memory for an operation; your system may be running low on virtual memory. Restart the Merge Agent.
    Our Scenario
We're using SQL Server 2012 SP1. All subscriptions are pull based.
We're using direct Merge Replication (not FTP or web sync)
We already have 10 active replications with larger databases. Only 1 has this issue.
Database size is less than 5 GB
Rebuilding the publisher is not an option.
    What have I tried?
There is no memory problem --- we have lots to spare
I have tried re-initialization of the database. Same problem.
I tried deleting the database and reinitializing it. Same problem
    New snapshot. Same problem.
I tried changing the subscriber server but still same issue.
    MCP, MCSD, MCDBA (ANXA)

Here is the result for the sp_configure on our subscriber. We're doing a pull on the server with the issue.
    name
    minimum
    maximum
    config_value
    run_value
    max server memory (MB)
    128
    2147483647
    2147483647
    2147483647
In addition, I made a comparison between the working servers and the one with the issue -- there seems to be a difference in the service pack. Publisher has none but the subscriber is operating on SP1. But still strange as only 1 database is affected.

  • System Settings/Ram

    Under the System Settings, what are the best settings for;
    Memory Usage
    Application
    Still Cache
    Thumbnail Cache
    Disk
    Ram............?
1.5 gigs is all my computer supports.
One last thing. Would it be best to run FCP under a new user name. Since I can't add more ram. Logging out of the Administrator (Me). So that what other garbage I have running in the Administrator account doesn't run, and frees up more ram/processor.
I have read some post on this topic. But, seeing I can't add more ram. I'm asking for advice.

Running the computer under another account won't really help your ram usage. Many of these are background processes that are owned by the Root. You can not kill them. Don't worry, they do not take up much ram and little cpu headroom. If there are processes that you initiated and you are interested in squeezing the machine to make every last CPU cycle or byte of RAM available, go through your user processes and kill anything that is not necessary - for example - a palm pilot background sync process.
If you are curious, in Activity Monitor, set your display to Active Processes. You'd be surprised how few there are other than the apps you are currently working with.
Also, while you are in Activity Monitor, you can get a grip on how the ram is being used by keeping an eye on Page In/Outs in System Memory. Don't worry about the Ins. The outs indicate that the ram is being overwhelmed and is swapping data out to the virtual memory (a file on your system drive). A zero here indicates the work is all being done in RAM with no page outs to VM.
This does point out why it is important to not fill up your hard drive. The virtual memory file is invisible to you but can grow to multiple GB in size. When your disk fills with other junk, you reduce the head room for disk read/write operations but equally importantly, reduce the space for the virtual memory and this can cause a lock up aka frozen system.
    good luck.

  • How to reduce system's ram usage

I noticed that Lion is eating up about 90% of my MBA's 2GB RAM. With Snow Leopard, the laptop has almost never ran out of memory (it occasionally did when I ran very memory-intensive app such as Windows XP in VirtualBox). With Lion, my memory is almost always at 10-20 MB free (the same level of free memory when I ran WindowsXP VirtualBox). System usage up to 33% most of the time. And the exhaust fan is running like crazy. Most notably is that all of that happens when I run a normal load: browsing Safari while listenning to iTunes.
I don't know which system threads are running in the background that eat up that whole lot of memory. So what are the most memory-hogging system features and how can I turn them off to reduce the system's usage of memory? Thanks.

Open up Activity Monitor (from Utilities) and select "All Processes". Then you can see what is going on.  Latest Safari is a pig and will use lots of RAM.
I gotta say, 2 MB is precious little RAM. Since the Mac plus, the minimium required RAM by Apple has always been enough to run the software, but has never been enough to run it well, IMO.

  • Mounting the Root File System into RAM

    Hi,
I had been wondering, recently, how can one copy the entire root hierarchy, or wanted parts of it, into RAM, mount it at startup, and use it as the root itself.  At shutdown, the modified files and directories would be synchronized back to the non-volatile storage. This synchronization could also be performed manually, before shutting down.
I have now succeeded, at least it seems, in performing such a task. There are still some issues.
For anyone interested, I will be describing how I have done it, and I will provide the files that I have worked with.
A custom kernel hook is used to (overall):
Mount the non-volatile root in a mountpoint in the initramfs. I used /root_source
Mount the volatile ramdisk in a mountpoint in the initramfs. I used /root_ram
Copy the non-volatile content into the ramdisk.
    Remount by binding each of these two mountpoints in the new root, so that we can have access to both volumes in the new ramdisk root itself once the root is changed, to synchronize back any modified RAM content to the non-volatile storage medium: /rootfs/rootfs_{source,ram}
A mount handler is set (mount_handler) to a custom function, which mounts, by binding, the new ramdisk root into a root that will be switched to by the kernel.
To integrate this hook into a initramfs, a preset is needed.
I added this hook (named "ram") as the last one in mkinitcpio.conf. -- Adding it before some other hooks did not seem to work; and even now, it sometimes does not detect the physical disk.
The kernel needs to be passed some custom arguments; at a minimum, these are required: ram=1
When shutting down, the ramdisk contents is synchronized back with the source root, by the means of a bash script. This script can be run manually to save one's work before/without shutting down. For this (shutdown) event, I made a custom systemd service file.
I chose to use unison to synchronize between the volatile and the non-volatile mediums. When synchronizing, nothing in the directory structure should be modified, because unison will not synchronize those changes in the end; it will complain, and exit with an error, although it will still synchronize the rest. Thus, I recommend that if you synch manually (by running /root/Documents/rootfs/unmount-root-fs.sh, for example), do not execute any other command before synchronization has completed, because ~/.bash_history, for example, would be updated, and unison would not update this file.
    Some prerequisites exist (by default):
Packages: unison(, cp), find, cpio, rsync and, of course, any any other packages which you can mount your root file system (type) with. I have included these: mount.{,cifs,fuse,ntfs,ntfs-3g,lowntfs-3g,nfs,nfs4}, so you may need to install ntfs-3g the nfs-related packages (nfs-utils?), or remove the unwanted "mount.+" entires from /etc/initcpio/install/ram.
        Referencing paths:
            The variables:
                source=
                temporary=
...should have the same value in all of these files:
                "/etc/initcpio/hooks/ram"
                "/root/Documents/rootfs/unmount-root-fs.sh"
                "/root/.rsync/exclude.txt"    -- Should correspond.
This is needed to sync the RAM disk back to the hard disk.
I think that it is required to have the old root and the new root mountpoints directly residing at the root / of the initramfs, from what I have noticed. For example, "/new_root" and "/old_root".
Here are all the accepted and used parameters:
Parameter                       Allowed Values                                          Default Value        Considered Values                         Description

ramdisk_cache_use        0,1                                                              None                    0                                                      If unison should use any available cache. Relevant if ram_transfer_tool=unison.
ramdisk_cache_update   0,1                                                              None                    0                                                     If unison should copy the cache to the RAM disk. Relevant if ram_transfer_tool=unison.
    This is the basic setup.
    Optionally:
        I disabled /tmp as a tmpfs mountpoint: "systemctl mask tmp.mount" which executes "ln -s '/dev/null' '/etc/systemd/system/tmp.mount' ". I have included "/etc/systemd/system/tmp.mount" amongst the files.
I unmount /dev/shm at each startup, using ExecStart from "/etc/systemd/system/ram.service".
Here are the updated (version 3) files, archived: Root_RAM_FS.tar (I did not find a way to attach files -- does Arch forums allow attachments?)
I decided to separate the functionalities "mounting from various sources", and "mounting the root into RAM". Currently, I am working only on mounting the root into RAM. This is why the names of some files changed.
Of course, use what you need from the provided files.
Here are the values for the time spend copying during startup for each transfer tool. The size of the entire root FS was 1.2 GB:
        find+cpio:  2:10s (2:12s on slower hardware)
        unison:      3:10s - 4:00s
cp:             4 minutes (31 minutes on slower hardware)
rsync:        4:40s (55 minutes on slower hardware)
Beware that the find/cpio option is currently broken; it is available to be selected, but it will not work when being used.
    These are the remaining issues:
find+cpio option does not create any destination files.
(On some older hardware) When booting up, the source disk is not always detected.
When booting up, the custom initramfs is not detected, after it has been updated from the RAM disk. I think this represents an issue with synchronizing back to the source root.
    Inconveniences:
Unison needs to perform an update detection at each startup.
initramfs' ash does not parse wild characters to use "cp".
That's about what I can think of for now.
I will gladly try to answer any questions.
I don't consider myself a UNIX expert, so I would like to know your suggestions for improvement, especially from who consider themselves so.

How did you use/test unison? In my case, unison, of course, is used in the cpio image, where there are no cache files, because unison has not been run yet in the initcpio image, before it had a chance to be used during boot time, to generate them; and during start up is when it is used; when it creates the archives. ...a circular dependency. Yet, files changed by the user would still need to be traversed to detect changes. So, I think that even providing pre-made cache files would not guarantee that they would be valid at start up, for all configurations of installation. -- I think, though, that these cache files could be copied/saved from the initcpio image to the root (disk and RAM), after they have been created, and used next time by copying them in the initcpio image during each start up. I think $HOME would need to be set.
Unison was not using any cache previously anyway. I was aware of that, but I wanted to prove it by deleting any cache files remaining.
Unison, actually, was slower (4 minutes) the first time it ran in the VM, compared to the physical hardware (3:10s). I have not measured the time for its subsequent runs, but It seemed that it was faster after the first run. The VM was hosted on a newer machine than what I have used so far: the VM host has an i3-3227U at 1.9 GHz CPU with 2 cores/4 threads and 8 GB of RAM (4 GB ware dedicated to the VM); my hardware has a Pentium B940 at 2 GHz CPU with 2 cores/2 threads and 4 GB of RAM.
I could see that, in the VM, rsync and cp were copying faster than on my hardware; they were scrolling quicker.
Grub, initially complains that there is no image, and shows a "Press any key to continue" message; if you continue, the kernel panics.
I'll try using "poll_device()". What arguments does it need? More than just the device; also the number of seconds to wait?

  • Can I run AE CS4 and CS3 on same system? +Ram Q's

I haven't been able to teach my motion graphics course in a year so I am behind on AE doings and the state budget cuts cancelled the purchase of my new laptop SO I only have CS3.  I am scrambling to make this course work!!
Q:  Can I run AE CS3 and CS4 on the same system?  (we have CS4 on some lab machines but some students have only CS3 at home)
Q:  Blimpo AE CS4 says it needs "2Gb RAM" vs CS3's "1Gb RAM for DV" (our application) - will CS4 even install and start w/o 2Gb?  If so, can one at least do simple, straightforward work with 1Gb or is it hopeless?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

"Simple, straightforward work" is very much a matter of definition. As long as we talking basic title, menu and background design at SD resolutions (PAL/ NTSC) or below (web) without resorting to oversized source files, it might work to a degree. I doubt, however, you will ever be abel to do anything remotely HD. Memory errors and warnings will be a constant companion....

  • System Overload = Ram or CPU

i get a system overload with sessions.
ive got all my drums tracked out...Kick, Hi hats, shakers, snares, claps, as well as synths, strings...stuff like that.
PLUS vocals and their effects on them.
i keep getting a overload error and my question is this a Ram issue, or a CPU issue.
ive got a macbook core 2 duo...so i hope its not a CPU problem.
    thanks in advance!

    Hi Tim,
you really don't say how much ram do you have,
you should have all you can afford at least 1 GB,
Also I think your main problem is your internal HD
that runs at 5400 rpm, to audio you should have
and external running at 7200 rpm (firewire/USB2).
While you don't have what I'm stating above,
try to freeze tracks, to prevent those error messages all the time.
The freeze button, it's a "snow flake" on the right of the Record or mute buttons.

upgraded  operating system to windows 7 32 bit on  hp pavilion a735w computer. lost audio to speakers, a driver was re-installed but there is still no audio.

    Hi:
Try the windows 7 driver directly from Realtek:
Accept the agreement. Download and install the first one on the list.

  • Preloading the whole system into ram

I have 12gigs of ram and I rarely ever reboot so I don't mind long startup times, but I like things to be snappy once I'm in.
Is there any way to load all of the system or atleast some of my most used programs into ram on boot, without making a ram drive?

What im planning to do is copy a squashfs'd /usr in my /tmp(tmpfs) and mount it with the help of aufs.
Search in the forum for this.
There is something in the wiki about it but working from the disk HERE
