My T400 Hangs a the boot stage
Hello,
does anyone had seing this problem. my t400 hangs and dysplayed the first lenovo Logo screen...No possibility to press F1 or F12 to select boot order. I had replaced all 4 gb memories but the issues persist. I had been told that this could be system board.
Thank you if you have a solution for my case
All the Best
Here is a sequence that might help fix delays / hangs at BIOS POST:
EDIT: Mark_Lenovo recommends skipping the gray steps 3-5 when you first try this sequence -- they may not be necessary. If you then decide to try removing the CMOS battery, please first make sure that there are no administrative passwords set on your ThinkPad.
Remove AC power.
Remove main battery, and UltraBay battery if any.
Remove CMOS backup (button cell) battery. The Hardware Maintenance Manual tells you how. You need to remove the palmrest to get to the battery. It's not hard, but if you're technophobic get somebody to help you.
Touch a metal screwdriver blade or similar to both of the pins that the CMOS backup battery plugs into for 10s. The idea is to short them together temporarily.
Replace CMOS backup battery and palm rest but NOT the other battery(ies) or AC yet.
Press the silver power button and hold it for 10s. Release it for a couple of seconds, then repeat this step 2 more times.
Re-install main battery(ies) and plug in the AC.
Boot and cross fingers!
Press F1 at boot to get to BIOS Setup and configure it the way you like (your settings were lost when you removed the CMOS backup battery.)
After things are working properly (we hope!) update to the latest BIOS. Burn the DOS BIOS update CD and update it this way, do NOT update BIOS from within Windows.
Please report back if the above works for you. The above sequence does the most thorough reset of your machine, it's possible that not every step is necessary. If you're squeamish about opening your ThinkPad and don't have someone to help you, you could try skipping steps 3 - 5.
Good luck!

Boot hangs at the "Removing Leftover Files" stage
I just set up my /var on reiser4 again but i have a weird issue.
When i boot my 2.6.11-cko2 kernel it hangs at the "Removing Leftover Files" stage but it boots fine with 2.6.11-cko4 and boots fine with an old 2.6.9-nitro4.
So it can't be permissions can it? I used the same config for the -cko4 kernel as I used for -cko2 so they are configured the same.
And I can't just switch to -cko4 because that annoying cdrecord crash is back AGAIN!I've got a new install (first time I've installed Arch, BTW -- and I'm fairly impressed) that is doing the same thing. My filesystems are ext3, for what that's worth. Usually when it hangs I can hard reboot the system and it will go past it on the restart, but I've had a couple of times where it has hung on consecutive boots. Would it be worth hacking that part of rc.sysinit to see if it is a specific step in the process that is causing the hang?
EDIT: I've gone ahead and added stat_busy/stat_done calls around each of the steps in that part of the boot process in rc.sysinit, as of late yesterday to see if there is any consistency on where the hang occurs. Interestingly -- or not, perhaps, I haven't had it hang yet... I'll keep an eye on it, and post more if I see a pattern.

2013 MBP 2.5 i5 4Gig 500MBHDD boots slow. It finishes post in the same time as an identical MBP, and then hangs for 30 seconds on one of the ethernet adapters, before finishing the boot. Once booted it is normal. Turning off airport changes nothing. Hardline adapter is not plugged in. Thunderbolt adapter is not used. Bluetooth is off. Did this out of box. Identical MBP boots to login screen in 36 seconds. Disk repair, permission repair, and safe mode boot have
already been done, no change. Boot time is consistent. Hangs at the same place each time. Right after post. Bad adapter?
Comments, solutions please.... and so ... now a few days later, success. I ran
your software but it told me nothing I hadn 't seen
in verbose boot.
Consistently, following good post, the boot hung
for 30 seconds on the adapters, (cards, chips, NICs.
Ethernet cards, whatever you prefer to call them)
either the airport card or the hard line. It would then
proceed at normal pace to the login screen.
Since it came out of the box that way, software
conflict was not a go. I guessed glitched driver or
fetch instruction. I zapped the PRAM (cleared
NVRAM) and reloaded the OS, updates, Garage Band,
iPhoto (one of Apple's true dogs in an otherwise
rare arena) iMovie, Photoshop, Lightroom, their
updates, and my files. MBP pro now boots to login
in 31 seconds. Note I have turned off as much gee
whiz, rubber band scroll, global swiping and other
hubcaps and hood ornaments as befits how like
things ... and turned off all the Asian and other fonts
I will. ever use.
Best guess ... corrupt driver or corrupt fetch script ...
bad server squirt at factory load.
Thanks for your help, Cheers! -

Which versions of Windows are supported with Boot Camp 5?
64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp.

I am running Win7 home Premium 64bit SP1. When I start up in the morning usually the PC loads OK. However, often it hangs on the Windows screen and I have to reboot and sometimes it is OK and other times I have to go via the HP srart-up screen. This inconsistency is very confusing and frustrating. Can anyone help?
Hello amorriss,
You have a frustrating issue to troubleshoot because of the randomness. We can try troubleshooting, but hard to say if it fixes it or not for a while.
Try putting the computer into a clean boot state, you can find instructions on this forum thread, http://goo.gl/w3KQH.
Once in a clean boot state see if you can get the problem to happen
If it does then we know it's not a program that is starting up causing the issue instead it is likely a driver.
If it doesn't then one of the programs that was booting when Windows boots was causing a conflict, the trick is figuring out which one.
If I have helped you in any way click the Kudos button to say Thanks.

My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs, then the machine shuts down and restarts. This sequence will repeat seemingly forever unless I shut it down manually.
I upgraded to Yosemite from Mountain Lion a couple months ago, skipping Maverick completely, and I've done any associated updates that Apple told me about. I don't recall which version of Yosemite I have, but I'm sure it is the "latest and greatest".
I've tried re-starting in Safe Mode / Safe Boot and that does the same thing as described above except without the endless restarts. Instead of restarting at some point, SafeBoot proceeds to the white screen and then it hangs until I restart it manually. (I've waited as long os 20-30 minutes with no response).
When I tried the option-command-p-r key combo I never get any chimes or other noises besides the original 1 time boot sound that you would expect to get when starting up a macbook pro.
I was using the mac quite normally (meaning I was doing work I normally do on it and there was no indication of anything wrong) immediately prior to this happening.
The machine is BootCamp(ed) with Windows 8.1 which I use from a VMWare virtual machine instead of natively so that I can have both OSes running at the same time. I also think this is unrelated to my problem. I have been using this setup for more than 2 years.
My upgrade to Yosemite was uneventful and I thought it went well and was very smooth. I don't want to lead attention away from Yosemite, but at this point my problem does not seem related to the upgrade.
Any help is appreciated.Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Satellite L875D-S7232 Hangs Up When Booting on Battery Power
Hello all... As I stated in another thread regarding Special Function Keys, my new Satellite L875D-S7232 has an issue that during boot-up of Windows 7 HP SP1 without the AC Adapter plugged into it, it will "hang up". After many hours of troubleshooting & even having it looked at from the retail tech that sold it to me, we have found no solution for this. I have also formatted the machine, partitioned the HD, & installed My version of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit SP1, along with updated ATI & Realtek drivers, along with only the updated driver software from Toshiba support website, & this issue still presists. This apparently isn't due to faulty written bloatware, & apparently due to an actual hardware issue. I am returning it to the retail outlet I purchased it from, in hopes they have a replacement machine of this model since I do like this platform at the price I got it. I will respond to this post to let ya know if the replacement was a success & the issue only pretained to this actual machine, which is what I am suspecting since I haven't seen any posts on this forum of a similiar issue. I did come across a port/thread (whatever ya call them) where a person had a different model, & his machine did exactly the reverse of mine, where his machine would hang up on the boot if the AC adapter was plugged in, but fine when running on battery. Myself & the retail tech even tried the solution they suggested of changing BIOS setting on the Processor cores... This solution was unsuccesful for my machine.
I hope it works fine after the exchange. Let us know how it goes.

Bizarre solution for OfficeJet Pro K5300 problem when Word docs hang in the print queue spooling
A bizarre solution to a spooling problem.
Problem:
Word documents sent to an HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series printer hang in the print queue, saying “spooling”. They do not print, and cannot even be cancelled.
Solution (Bizarre Solution).
The solution that worked for me was to rename the printer by removing the first space after “HP” in the printer’s name. When I did this, Word could then print to the printer. If the space is then re-inserted back into the printer-name then Word is still able to print!! I don’t know how, but it worked, and it worked on two separate installations! The full explanation is below with more options for testing that still need to be explored, or preferably explained by HP and or Microsoft.
First here is some background. My computer is an IBM NetVista 2.4GHz, P4. It has a 250GB HDD with lots of room and 2GB of RAM. My operating system is Win XP Pro with Service Pack 3. My anti-Virus in Trend Micro Internet Security 2009, updated regularly, (I turned it off while installing the printer software). I use Office Professional 97, with Office SP2b).
I bought a new HP Officejet Pro K5300 printer.
I installed the printer software, and followed HP’s directions strictly. I used the installation CD that was supplied by HP. My connection to the printer was USB.
The installation proceeded uneventfully and I printed a test page after it finished.
After that I printed a configuration page, then I printed a couple of photographs using Irfan View. The quality was great and I was pleased.
Then I tried to print a 2-page Word document, using Word 97, but nothing happened. No response from the printer, no error messages, just silence. I clicked on the printer icon on the task bar to look at the print queue and saw that my document was listed as “Spooling”, but it was not making any progress. I waited a couple of minutes but still no progress. I tried canceling it but it would not cancel/delete. The job on the queue would not respond to anything. I could not print it and I could not cancel it. The only way I could recover was to shut down Word, which flushed the queue and lost the job.
I tried this a few more times but with no success.
I did a Google search for this problem, and I found a few solutions. I tried them, but none worked. I checked HP’s website and found this problem listed, with some solutions from HP. I tried HP’s solutions, but they did not work either. In fact, when there was a Word document stuck “spooling” in the queue, HP’s diagnostic utility said that it could not even communicate with the printer, and suggested that my USB connection was bad. However, when I flushed the queue by shutting down Word, I could successfully send a Test Page to the printer, and I could print a detailed PDF from Adobe. So Word was the problem, not my USB connection.
After a pondering this problem over the next few days, and keeping in mind the fact that the default HP printer-name was “HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series”, I remembered that many years ago I could not get an Excel VB macro to select a printer, and print to it, if the printer-name had any spaces in it. I had noticed that the HP default printer name had 4 spaces in it, so I wondered what would happen if I renamed the printer by removing the spaces from its name.
So I renamed the printer to “HPOfficejetProK5300Series” (no spaces), and voila! Word could now print to it!
Then I wondered, if it was necessary to remove all of the spaces from the name, or just some of them, to get the printer to work, so I renamed the printer back to it’s default name in 4 stages, at each stage re-inserting one of the original spaces, and testing the printing. At each stage the printer kept successfully printing from Word, until I had re-inserted all four spaces and the printer’s name was back to being identical to the default name that it was installed with, but now it would print from Word on command.
So why was it that Word could not get the printer to print with the printer’s default installed name, but if I removed all of the spaces from the printer’s name, then re-inserted them, the printer would print from Word every time?
So I did another test.
I uninstalled the entire printer software package and installed the updated Full Feature software package, filename “OJProK5X00_Full_8_3.exe”, 159MB download from HP.
After the package was installed, Word could NOT print to the printer, but other programs like Adobe PDF reader, and Irfan View, could print to it. I tried each software package about three times each, with consistent results.
I then renamed the printer, but this time I just removed the first space after the letters “HP”, i.e., I changed the printer’s name from “HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series” to “HPOfficejet Pro K5300 Series”. After I did that Word could then print to it. I then changed the printer’s name back to “HP Officejet Pro K5300 Series” by re-inserting the first space, and Word could still print to it now.
I challenge someone from HP to read this and explain why Word won’t print to this printer until I rename the printer by removing a space, but can still print to it after the space is re-inserted!
Of course, there is another alternative. Perhaps I could have renamed the printer by removing or changing any of the other characters, instead of the spaces. But each test involves completely uninstalling and re-installing the software, and I have better things to do with my time.
This question was solved.
View Solution.What an amazing solution!
I recently purchased an HP Deskjet F4580 and had discovered that when using Word 97, it would print OK when using the Print icon but when trying to print using File->Print->choose page number or current page, Word would crash. Excel, Adobe etc would all print fine. I have spend many hours removing and then reloading the HP software and Office Professional software but this solution fixed the problem in a few minutes. PC is running XP Home SP3.
Just one thing I would add is that my computer has two accounts - one is the Computer Administrator account and the other is a Limited account. When I took out the space between HP and Deskjet so the printer became HPDeskjet F4500 series, I could then print from the Administrator account using either the print icon or File->Print->choose page number or current page. When I switched to the Limited account, I would get the same crash when I tried File->Print->choose page number or current page (OK with icon). The Limited account mode does not allow the printer to be re-named.
I went back to Admin mode, re-classified the Limited account as a Computer Administrator account, logged on to this account and re-named the printer (in this case I took out another space so it became HPDeskjetF4500 series. Then it printed fine using the print icon or using File->Print->choose page number or current page. I then went back to the Computer Administrator account, re-named the printer to HPDeskjet F4500 and re-classified the second account back to Limited account mode. Now printing OK in both Computer Administrator account mode and Limited account mode.

T400s Linux/Windows dual boot with Linux from Esata Flash Drive
This project is about a dual boot Windows/Linux system without using the normal dual boot changes in the bootloader of the windows hard drive. When I started this I found bits and pieces of information on the web but no complete description so I wrote this post.
I have done a dual boot system on my previous Thinkpad where I had partitioned the hard drive between Linux and windows. For this project I wanted to leave the windows hard drive absolutely intact and unaltered, and boot Linux from a flash drive in the esata port on the back of the T400s. Obviously this uses the F12 boot list function key to boot from the flash. The advantage of this is that Windows is totally unaltered and when I need Linux, I plug in the esata flash drive, hit F12 during the boot cycle and select booting from the esata flash drive. The reason for Esata rather than USB is simply speed. I have a nice fast Linux installation.
I used the OCZ esata flash drive but suspect any of the alternatives will work. It did not need the accessory usb cable because the Thinkpad powered the esata flash directly.
To boot from the esata drive I had to make the following changes in the bios
I left the esata flash plugged in as I went into the bios
Bios>config>Serial ATA and changed the Sata controller mode option to compatibility
Restart and back into the Bios
Bios>startup>boot - in my case the esata flash drive showed up as ATA HDD2 and was excluded from the boot order so I had to un-exclude it and move it to the point in the boot order that I wanted.
Next I downloaded a linux installation iso and put it on a CD - in my case opensuse. Then booted from the CD
From now on this instructions are specific to opensuse and yast but can be generalized to whatever Linux is being used.
In my case yast came up with a good set of suggestions for automatically partitioning the flash drive but then crashed during the partitioning itself. So I rebooted and specified the partitions manually.
A fat32 partition left as a partition which both windows and Linux could see (in my case about 20% of the drive) (/dev/sdb1)
An extended partition with the remainder of the drive (/dev/sdb2) which contains the following logical partitions
A linux Swap partition of 2GB (/dev/sdb5)
A linux /home partition –the remainder of the drive (/dev/sdb6)
A linux /root partition of 8GB (/dev/sdb7)
Yast automatically suggested mount points of C,D,E for the windows partitions. Unfortunately because of the way the Thinkpad hard drive was laid out Yast had C assigned the ThinkPad Service partition and D assigned to the SW_Preload (or main windows partition). However there was an edit function that allows for the reversal of those mount points so that the windows C drive is mounted in Linux as Windows/C thereby avoiding confusion. I had already backed up and removed the Thinkpad factory install data so I did not have to deal with that. Yast suggested Windows/E for the mount point of the FAT32 partition on the flash drive, which I accepted.
The yast install configurator made all this manual selection easy, and after the manual configuration the partitioning worked perfectly.
Next step was Linux user configuration which went fine
Next was booting.
In the section management tab
delete the windows 1 and 2 options (since we are not dual booting directly)
In the boot loader installation tab
uncheck boot from mbr ( this stops the install from installing Grub and dual boot on the windows c drive
check boot from root partition (this installs grub and all associated files in the Linux root partition (/dev/sdb6)
I believe that the correct procedure at this point is to click Boot Loader installation details which will bring up the Grub device map. In the device map there will be a line for the fixed hard drive (aka the windows drive) and a line for the esata flash drive. When the installer started up these were in hard drive and esata drive order. However when we boot directly from the flash the esata drive will be grub drive hd0 and the fixed hard drive will be grub hd1. The device map order needs to be changed to reflect this ie the esata drive should be first not second.
I did not do this and ended up initially doing Grub command line editing to boot and later manually editing the grub files using information I had previously learned the hard way and through google.
At this point let the installer go ahead and install Linux. After doing this it should come back and tell you to reboot. Do not do it yet because we need to install the MBR into the flash drive.
I suspect that there is a way of doing this in Yast running from the Live CD but it was not obvious to me so I used the manual method that I have used before.
Open a root terminal
Mount /dev/sdb6 to /mnt/sdb6 (my linux root)
Touch /mnt/sdb6/boot/grub/flag
The purpose of this is when we go looking later at the grub command prompt we need an easy to find unique file
Start grub and do the following
#grub
grub> find /boot/grub/flag
(hd1,5) -- the result of the find in my example
grub> root (hd1,5) -- using the result of the find in my example
grub> setup (hd1) -- install mbr -- my example parameters - if you get this wrong you will trash some other drive!!!
hopefully grub announces success
grub> quit
Reboot and select the flash drive. In my case I still had the grub devicemap wrong and had to edit the grub commands during boot to tell grub how to find the correct partition and then edit them again after booting
Typical linux install issues that we all always seem to have and can be solved with a little (or a lot of) google research.
As I said at the beginning I now have an untouched windows installation and a nice fast Linux installation. I hope that this will be of some use to someone.Hi chrissh
i tried this exact procedure... on the exact same notebook (T400s). However, as soon as I set the
Bios>config>Serial ATA to "compatibility", I cannot use my default Windows installation! I immediately get the "blue screen of death".
I doubt I did anything differently since this is the first step of your procedure and my laptop is brand new!
any idea? -
6/06 install CD and DVD hangs on initial boot
Hi all
I've downloaded the 6/06 CD's and dvd burned the on the specific media in both linux and winxp with the correct md5 checksums. All seems ok so far. Then at boot time from the cd player, I see a line of dots growing at top lefthand side of the screen, which I assume to be the kernel loading process. Then after printing the first three initial information lines everything freezes. I then tried solaris expresse nv40 which is also at the 6/06 status and everything works fine. Now what's going with the newest solaris release ????I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. My x86 ISO's worked fine. However, I do suspect something got hatched when Sun rolled in the ZFS code (or something else). On my Blade 100, the SPARC ISO (disk 1) panic's part-way through the boot. I have burned three ISO's successfully, and they all panic. This is the same batch of blank CD's I've used for a number of releases, including the aforementioned x86 disks. So, while whatever the new code is may work on my x86, I'm suspecting it is hanging on your system, and the SPARC compile is panic'ing on my Blade 100.
We're probably going to have to wait a while, as Sun shuts down for the July 4 week. :-(
So much for upgrading my Blade 100 this weekend.

HANG on the halfway of internet software updating
Hi,
My new MacPro facing a Big problem.HANG on the halfway of software updating after system disc installed completely!!!
Maybe you'll suggest me to re-install it again, unluckily,i've repeat and repeat the installation and then software updating as usual,BUT Hang again on the halfway...Oh my baby MacPro!!!
What do you think?A. Before you do any updates, clone your original drive and boot off the clone to make sure it works, then repair your original. Start with Apple First Aid but then use 3rd party program Disk Warrior from Alsoft.
B. Why did you begin all over?
C. Maybe your DVD is bad or wrong version?
D. The destination disk drive is failing or needs to be repartitioned or zeroed.
E. Don't install the updates, there is an option to download only for later install.
F. Use another disk drive for Downloads. Also setup another disk drive for OS X so you can rule out present drive, "Emergency OS X" .
G. Are you losing internet connection during software update?
H. When you retry installing do you erase and install? archive and install?
Go to Utility menu just before begin of installation and choose Disk Utility and then repartition your drive.
I. Use standalone versions of 10.5.4 etc to direct download for later.

T400 hangs on "windows is shutting down"
After my latest ThinkVantage update my T400 hangs when shutting down. This occurs on "shutdown" or "restart". UPHClean doesn't fix the problem. Thoroygh scanning shows system is clean. I'm running XP3, up to date. The only way I can shut down is with the power button. Any idea whats going on?
Thanks,

I have a MacBook 7,1 which i recently installed a PNY 250 SSD and added some RAM. The laptop was running awesome with OSX 10.6.8, lightning fast.
Then I installed Yosemite. There was a bit of hang during the install, but Yosemite came up no issue when I rebooted. Here is the problem:
Every other time I boot the MacBook it hangs at a grey screen with the prohibitory sign. Verbose reveals a "still waiting for root device" error. Now if I reboot from that hang, it boots fine, but then will hang again the next time. It keeps alternating like this. Any ideas??
I am not running any third party trim software, so that's not the issue.I have a MacBook 7,1 which i recently installed a PNY 250 SSD and added some RAM. The laptop was running awesome with OSX 10.6.8, lightning fast.

I believe you've posted this multiple times. Once is all that's needed. Also, please don't use all caps. Aside from the fact it means you're shouting it's also harder to read than mixed case.
The error means a bad fan motor or the HDD has failed. In your case it's the latter. You can try the following:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.
