My take on the iPhone antenna issue

I'll start off by saying I own a 3GS, don't own a 4, have seen one a friend has and know a few friends that have them.
I've had other products (like a knife) that have an optional guard. You can leave it off and "be careful" or you can put it on and have the item be somewhat less attractive. This is my personal take on Apple's reasoning.
You definitely would not want to increase the size of the iPhone by building in a case, because a third part might make a case that, say, was also a checkbook case. So it makes sense for the iPhone to be bare bones, and you have the option of adding a case if you want one.
The mistake, as I see it, was in Apple not including a bumper with the iPhone, +and having the bumper already be on the iPhone when you took it out of the box.+
Had they done this, IMO there would have been no complaints at all.

I agree the bumpers should have been free and included.
The antenna issue though is very subjective. Steve is right. I have seen every phone i have owned drop bar level depending on how i hold it. This one is more pronounced because we can touch the antenna, usually a radio no no. The idea of the external antenna integrated with the case is quite cool. I use my iP4 in a very fringe area and haven't had it drop a call due to lost signal. In fact it is better than my 3G i replaced. It is better with the bumper. So what happened? Apple took a risk and designed something new. Then Steve hyped it up into the stratosphere. Raised expectation of perfection. It isn't perfect and all the nay sayers had something quite real to pick on. Now here we are.
This phone is an amazing device. Very fast an powerful and the camera is really good. It has a few color issues but nothing that can't be fixed in any photo editor. The result is great photos capture with a cell phone. The video is great as is the recorded sound. Quite usable.
So it has a few quirks, well worth all the positives in my opinion.

    Setting up Touch ID
You can set up Touch ID in iOS setup assistant or by tapping Settings > General > Passcode & Fingerprint > Fingerprints. To configure Touch ID, you must first set up a passcode. Touch ID is designed to minimize the input of your passcode, but your passcode will be needed for additional security validation, such as enrolling new fingerprints.

  • Does The iPhone 4 Still Have The Reception Issue

hey guys i wanna know does the iphone 4 still have the "Death Grip" which is the reception issue (antenna issue) with iphone 4 when u hold ur hand (or fingers) near the antennas and the reception goes down to like 1 bar (n sometimes makes it go to no service).
i think someone said they have made newer models of the iphone 4 what have fixed it but i am not 100% sure
have they fixed it if i buy an iphone 4 now or does it still have the reception issue
here is what it is if u dont know what the reception issue is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ixIHyEPO5g

My blackberry still has the reception / antenna issue. And always has. In fact, it is so bad that I can terminate the connection if I hold the phone with my head and shoulder.
My iPhone 4 (not s) on the other hand has never been a problem for me.
A lot of noise—not much benefit. However Apple did apply new engineering to the problem—which is great!

I lose signal, when placing the phone in my pocket. I have a silicone case on it
now. I'm waiting for my bumper, if that doesn't keep it from dropping signal
while in my poocket, it's going back.
I predict the bumper will have no effect on the phone in your pocket, especially since you already have a case on it. The only thing the bumper will fix is when you have the palm of your hand directly on the left side of the phone bridging the gap between the antennas. It improves things in that scenario quite effectively. Height above ground, in the clear, with no large absorbent masses in the way, makes the most improvement. If the signal is weak, the best thing you can do is get the phone higher, in the clear, and move near a window if inside. Standard cell phone protocol.
But I have to say (with all the OPs), the iPhone 4 is phenomenal in its ability to stay on the air in weak signal conditions. Vastly better than earlier models. The specific antenna issue is a bit embarrassing for Apple, but certainly not a deal killer. No phone from any manufacturer is going to perform optimally in a pocket.
I am surprised no one is complaining about how slippery the phone is. It became obvious to me, in the first few minutes of use, something had to be added to "get a grip" on the phone, or it was not going to survive long around me. It slid off everything that was not perfectly flat. My knee, my lap in the car, you name it. It is the most difficult phone to hang on to that I have ever had.
The bumper also cures that problem. Not 100% in all conditions (you still can drop it) but it improves the odds enormously. Is it also Apple's fault the phone is slippery? Of course. But the fix is the same.

  • Just returned my iphone 4s to Verizon. Back to the iphone 4 I kept, thankfully.  With the return however, went $35.00 of unwatched TV episodes and can't access, they are not in que

After downloading 2 days ago $35.00 of TV episodes on the iPhone 4s because it had the memory, my computer does not. I was also taking advantage of a friend's high speed internnet f that I don't have at home, I ended 2 weeks of agony by returning the 4s to Verizon and switching back to the iphone 4. Today was the drop dead day to return the 4s and revert my contract. Unfortunately, I cannot get the TV episodes I did not get a chance to watch. I could not back them up on iTunes because I am out of space on my computer but originally was going to keep them on my Apple devices until that issue is resolved. I could watch them on the computer via the phone in the meanwhile.  Got 1 episode out of 12 viewed. 5g iCloud was not enough backup space plus my internet at home would have taken years to do it. I thought no problem, whole idea with IOS 5 was ability to access your purchases wherever and whatever apple devices you have on hand, works for the apps. Wrong, went to download 1 episode and I was charged again. Now I have to hassle with Apple support with that and the 12 other TV episodes. I have loved my ipods all the way to the click wheel, the video, the iTouch, and the iphone 4, all of which I still have but the iphone 4s issues and the IOS 5 update, really soured me! Apple is just TOO controlling, greedy and taking away the fun!!!

I guess but that was what I was on earlier but it wasn't of much help.
I need to chat with an apple person but don't know how if I don't have a phone accessible.
Is there a way to connect thru a laptop or something?

    Zelemiah,
I had the same frustrating problem and found that the way it worked for me was to SYNC the Phone in iTunes first with the SYNC Button on the bottom right of the Summary page at the end of the coloured Data used bar and then do the Version Update it worked first time for me and it appears that the 2.1 Update will not take unless the iPhone is synched with iTunes first as there may be too many differences which is why it keeps bombing...Hope it Works. • How scratch-able are the sides of the iPhone 4?

I'm thinking of buying protection for the sides (also for the damned antenna issue)..is it worth it? How scratchable are the sides? Or should I just use strips to get rid of the antenna issue and not worry about side protection?

ive bumped it a few times. no scratches that i know of (and trust me, Ive been checking)

Intel has issued a comment concerning the iPhone sync issues some users are experiencing with certain PCs containing a specific Intel chipset. “Our leading theory is a BIOS or system configuration issue, but we are still investigating,” Intel said. The basic input/output system (BIOS) is the boot firmware run by a PC on startup, which identifies, tests, and initializes core system devices such as the graphics card, hard disk, and other hardware. As we reported earlier this week, the syncing issue appears to linked to Intel’s P55 Express chipset and its USB controller, which leaves the afflicted machines able to recognize the iPhone but unable to sync. The problem has been most prevalent among PCs running 64-bit Windows 7, but the issue has also been reported on machines running both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of both Windows 7 and Vista."

    Hi R@chel,
It sounds as if you are having difficulty making sure your iPhone only gets the music you want. In order to do this, you need to manually manage the data that gets synced to your iPhone. This article explains how to do so -

    Syncing manually
If you prefer not to automatically sync content to your device, you can set up manual syncing:
Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes.
Click the Devices button in the upper-right corner. (If you're viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner. The Devices button will appear.)
In the main iTunes browser window, select the Summary tab.
Select the option to Manually manage music and videos or Manually manage music. This will deselect the automatic sync settings for the Music, Movies, and TV Shows tabs.
    Click Apply.
    And -
After following the steps above, you can add individual songs, videos, and playlists from iTunes to your device. To add content to your device:
    Select your device.
    Click On this Device.
Choose Add to in the upper-right corner. If you drag a song, video, TV show, or movie while viewing the media in your iTunes library, a sidebar will show up on the right. You can drag your content onto the device. You can also create and modify playlists directly on the device.
