My ten year old G-5 locks up only when on the Interne. Any suggestions?

My power Mac g-5 appears to work normal until I go to the Internet then it will totally lock up. Cannot restart or force quit.
I am thinking the modem may be the culprit.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi John,
How does it connect, wifi, Ethernet?

  • Cannot get new Apple TV to send audio to my 2 year old Dennon Receiver, tried HDMI and digial optical cable.  Any suggestions?

Just purchased Apple TV.  HDMI works fine direct to Sony TV, but want audio through my Dennon Receiver and speakers.  Tried the digital optical cable, no sound.  Connect Apple Tv HDMI directly to Receiver, no sound or picuture.  Ops manual indicates this is suppose to work.  Contact Apple support and they offered no solutions?  My son has similar system and it works fine via HDMI.  What am I missing?

I am far from an expert but recently connected my tv, directv receiver and Apple TV to a Pioneer Surround Sound Receiver and was pleased that it worked.  Here are some things I read as I was setting all this up:
    1.  TV must have an HDMI ARC input for it to support audio.  You would connect the HDMI output from the receiver to this HDMI ARC input on your tv.  My tv manual , (Sony Bravia tv) did not mention an HDMI ARC input nor was it marked that way on the tv's HDMI input on the back but I used HDMI 1 and it works.  If you don't have HDMU ARC, you probably already know you have to use a digital optical connection.
    2.  Regardless of whether you use HDMI or digital optical connections, there are still some settings you have to make on the tv and receiver for audio.  Consult your tv and receiver manuals for these settings.

  • I've a ten year-old iMac, with Mac OS X version 10.5.8

    I've a ten year-old iMac, with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 & PowerPC G5 processor
Problem is iTunes, reinstalled recently as 10.6.3; saying needs QuickTime 7.5.5 or higher.

the iTunes 10.6.3 was installed a few days ago by the same tech person selling me the computer about two years ago, when the OS was reinstalled including iTunes.  I've not been able to make iTunes work since the computer was returned.
The tech person is busy and will get back to me eventually, so I'm trying to see if I can do anything by myself.  This shouldn't of happened, though everyone makes mistakes; is what I'm guessing?

  • Does the newest Mac still work with ten year old software?

Super basic question from a completely techno-illiterate user.
I'm getting a latest greatest laptop in the next couple days. The last Mac I bought was a PowerBook G4 which is currently running 10.4.10.
Does the latest operating system (sorry I don't know the new names or version numbers) still permit all the usual software I've been using for a long while ... my old MS Office software and such? Or is the latest version some new breakthrough again (like OS9 to OSX) that requires buying new software again.
Sorry for the idiot question. My last Mac is ten years old and I don't focus on technology at all. I just use the thing for basic chores and features and to browse the web.
Short version: I don't have to re-buy a bunch of software again if I get a new Mac, do I...? All my old software that worked under OS 10.4.10 will still work under the newest operating system?
    -JOHN

Your old software may or may not run. Depends on each application. Unfortunately, just because an app runs on a G4 with OS X 10.4.11 does not mean it will automatically run on Snow Leopard (10.6.x).
You will need to check with each vendor; hopefully you don't have too many to check. If you can post a (hopefully short) list of the apps you have, and their version numbers, people here can probably tell you what will be ok or not on your new Mac.
Regarding MS Office, I would not try to install or run the original Office X on a new, Snow Leopard Mac. Office Mac 2004 may run ok, but if you have to upgrade, get Office Mac 2008. If you buy Office 2008 now, you can get a free upgrade to Office 2011 when it comes out around the end of the year.

It does not. First things first have you tried restarting?

  • Hi, I have a 3 year old Macbook Pro 13" and I accidentally cracked the outer screen of my mac book, however the LCD panel is fine and works well. Please advise what to do

Hi, I have a 3 year old Macbook Pro 13" and I accidentally cracked the outer screen of my mac book, however the LCD panel is fine and works well. Please advise what to do. I live in India and I have gone to authorised Apple technicians and they infomed me that I will have to replace the LCD panel as well even though it is not cracked, is this really true or can I just change the outer shell? Also they say that they cannot do it in India... can I do it myself at home?

Since it is 3 years old find a local repair shop that can replace the glass Only. you may have to send it out to a Non Local shop for that but there are some that specialize in doiing that on Mac notebooks.
Apple will ony replace the complete screen enclosure with all normal parts included, LCD, Camera, Aluminum housing and glass as one unit. Which is very expensive. Or you could just use it as a desktop system with external monitor and buy a new notebook.

IF she set up find ny ipod on the ipod itself BEFORE it was lost, AND it is on, AND it is connected to wi-fi, then she may be able to get an approximate street address using the find my ipod service.
    Otherwise, no.

  • Setting up iTunes Account for Ten Year Old??

I have a 10 year old daughter with an iPod Touch, and we have just given her a completely re-vamped Windows XP laptop. I've downloaded iTunes for her, but have not installed it as yet. What I am wondering is if I can install iTunes for her under her own name so she can sync her music with her iPod, but at the same time restricting purchases?
I do not intend to give her carte blache access to iTunes in terms of allowing her to purchase music, but I would like to set it up so that my Wife and I can log in and purchase music for her from time to time.
    Thanks for your help.

You have to be over 13 to have your own account.

However you can set up a separate library for her which she can sync her iPod to.

  • What makes a ten year old iMac run slow?

what makes a 8 year old iMac run slow? Its 2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo processor Memory 2gb 667 mhx ddr2 sdram

What Mac OS are you running?
See if any of these items apply:
    1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?
    2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimizations" applications?
    3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?
    4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?
    5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)?
    6) Did your financial institution ask you to install Trusteer EndPoint Protection (also known as Trusteer Rapport)?
An overly full hard drive can slow things down, too, especially in a computer with only 2GB RAM.

IMO a 4 year old laptop is too dated to run the new OS X bloated versions, it should have stuck with 10.6.8 max, but it's likely too late to go back now as you have too many files and programs in the later OS X versions.
However if you don't care and have basic type files that are neutral state file formats, like they will work on any Mac/PC or Linux machine (like pictures, music files etc) then you might be interested in going back to Snow Leopard for performance.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Are you posting with it here?
How long has it been since you did any hard drive maintenance?
After six years of use, the hard drive may be so full that it is hampering performance.
    From http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html  :
Determine the available space on your Mac OS X startup disk
In Finder®, select the startup disk icon. For most users, this is Macintosh HD.
    Press the Command-I keyboard shortcut.
The Info window for your startup disk opens. In the General pane, the Capacity, Available (free space), and space Used on your startup disk is displayed, as seen in the following screen shot:
As a general rule of thumb: if the Available space on the Mac OS X startup disk is less than 10 GB, it is time to free some disk space. We suggest 10 GB as an absolute minimum as this is generally the amount of free space required to reinstall Mac OS X 10.5 and earlier via an Archive and Install and still preserve space for VM swap files. More free space is better. For example, users of FileVault may want to retain more free space than that occupied by their encrypted Home folder: disabling FileVault requires free space somewhat greater than the size of your encrypted Home folder.
Even though Mac OS X 10.4 doesn't take as much space as Mac OS X 10.5, you still need to keep quite a bit of free space on your hard drive. A too-full hard drive is a common cause of system slowdowns.
If you find that you do have enough disk space, post back and we will explore other potential problems.

  • 2.3 year old iMac (27inch) Hard Drive failing. Does the drive have its own warranty?

My imac that is 2.3 years old is now having the S.M.A.R.T system saying the drive is "failing".  Does the drive have its own warranty? That's not very old for a failure and most HD manufactures have a 3 year minimum.  Now I wish I had bought the extended warranty period.  Shish.

  • Problem with itunes locking up only when burning to music library

All of a sudden when I burn my discs to an external hard drive with about 1-3 songs (never at beginning or midway through the burn)left to burn itunes locks up, forcing me to restart computer. Not all discs but about 1 every 15-20 burned. Since I am burning over 2000 of my cd's to library this is very annoying. If I use itunes just to play the disc it is fine and the discs work fine in my home audio system. I use windows xp and am burning to a western digital external hard drive. The discs are all clean with no visible signs of scratches or scuffs.
    Any suggestions?

yes i mean importing. by the way i use apple lossless. no the specific discs will not import. i just tried importing a disc i just bought new and it does not import the whoe disc as well. all of the discs i am importing are mine and are originals...not burned.
