My Theory

I suspect that the MBP Wi-Fi card may have poor receptivity and be sensitive to interference (perhaps because of the aluminum MBP case? Like others have experienced, my case at times seems to be holding a slight charge when plugged into the mains). My reasoning follows. Our household has three laptops, my 2+year old MBP 15", my wife's recent Thinkpad with an internal Wi-fi card and my wheezing five year old Thinkpad with a Belkin USB wireless card. My MBP wi-fi performance seems to vary according to location. My wife's laptop frequently can establish a reliable wireless connection when I can't, regardless of location (our flat, hotels, etc.) My MBP has problems holding a connection in our flat, and can't get a connection in our bedroom, where my wife can. On the other hand, on a recent trip to the US, I had no problems in hotels or at a house we stayed at. In our flat, my ancient Thinkpad is by far the worst of the three, constantly dropping connections. Here, I have also noticed that when my MBP drops a connection, my cell phone will also drop a connection, suggesting some sort of external interference. Using the "Interference Robustness" option merely seems to result in a rejection of week signals, aggravating the problem, rather than helping. Thoughts?

We have a late 2007 MBP (wireless "n") and a 2003 PowerBook G4 ("g"), both served by an Airport Extreme Base Station. Neither has trouble getting and holding a signal at home, even when a floor below the AEBS or in a room that completely shielded by a large concrete and tile (with steel mesh substrate) shower enclosure. Even outdoors, connecting is not a problem. The AEBS is set to max power.
I noticed on a recent trip that many Mac users were having connection problems in a conference room, including a number of people with plastic MacBooks and iBooks. We were less than 100 yards from a tower and under 75 feet from a second transmitter in a nearby office on the other side of a large institutional kitchen. We found out that tower access was blocked by a large sheet metal storage shed attached to the building between the conf room and the tower. Moving a few feet to the left picked up the office; moving so we were not behind the shed let everyone pick up the tower. I suspect the office transmitter was turned down to low power.
So proximity and line of sight can be important, especially when using a non-Airport network you don't control. For your home network, try raising the transmitter (ours is on top of a 6-foot tall bookcase) or seeing if the power is turned down.

  • Follow-up: beasys.User vs. theory.Customer

    Hi,
    In one of the previous postings there was mentioned that
    Personalization server and Commerce Server do have user
    management functionality overlap. Indeed it would have
    been nice to have a single point of user info persistence
    and management.
    The MyBuyBeans Sample demonstrates how both mechanisms could
    be utilized, delegating certain properties to Commerce components,
    while others to Personalization server "Property Sets". It is
    worth mentioning that Unified User Profile integration mechanism
    has not been used in the sample, instead data is synchronized manually.
    Why so?
    Question:
    What is recommended as best practice for user management?
    What is the direction that the Commerce server will be moving towards
    in subsequent releases?
    Thank You in advance
    Tony.

  • What is your theory on what happened with ASUS Transformer Prime and BB?

    This is my theory:
    First preorder batch 11/22:
    BB opened up for preorders based on expected date of anticipated 12/9 ship date.  The buyers at BB that orders from vendors did not buy any preorder stock from ASUS in Champagne on first order. I gotta bleive that the reason that the Champagne prime is not shipping from BB is a "buyer" error. They filled their first allotment of preorders. That is why BB shiped out grey from the first wave of preorders. Other vendors got both- why did BB only get grey? The buyers always think they know what we want or will order and only ordered grey in the request to ASUS. They got caught with their pants down when Amazon cancelled the orders on 12/2 and EVERYONE affected jumped on BB.com and ordered the champagne which was available as the next wave.
    Amazon fallout 12/2:
    Best buy opened up another set of preorder allotment - 2nd wave, and got hit hard real fast with preorders that they were not prepared for, or had stock for.
    ASUS is filling initial preorder requests from the resellers in the order that the resellers requested too.  BB was offering that in the next wave of preorders, but they probably took too many orders at once, and they put in another order to ASUS around the 12/9 delay ship date and ASUS was not taking them at that time (delays due to Wifi reported) .
    ASUS 12/9 wifi report delay in shiping:
    ASUS was cought in a delay with reports of wifi range problems and either stopped taking orders, or recallled/replaced shipment with others.  Once ASUS took orders again from the reseller they are shipping daily based on the preorder backlog. Asus is responsible for the delay in accepting orders from vendors, and BB had a buyer error, by either waiting too long to put in the first wave of orders, or not ordering enough, and now they are in the back of the vendor reseller line waiting on ASUS to get to them.
    12/19:
    The date of irst ship came and BB shipped all it ordered from first wave and could not get anymore from ASUS in the second wave to cover the Amazon fallout system overload.  They were left in the back of the line of all other vendors becuse no reseller could get a second next wave fulfillment until all others got their first waves fulfilled.  The 12/9 delay kept next waves from being fulfilled, and that is why inventory is trickling into the other resellers and BB can only get a few more at a time.  BB ordered champagne on a next wave delay.
    The thing that bugs me in to no end is how is a person that ordered grey on 11/28 at BB still on backorder, but a 12/05 grey order has shipped and delivered?? This is not ASUS fault, That is poor business operations on BB.
    That is my "perfect storm" theory- what do you think?  What is your theory?

    That is pretty close to what I think happened.
    It does seem pretty clear that Best Buy never initially ordered and Champagne Primes.  I have combed through the threads at this site and others and haven’t seen one person receive a Champagne Prime from BB.  Meanwhile people who bought from other resellers like New Egg and Amazon have received Champagne Primes.
    The mismanagement of shipping out orders chronologically has to be maddening for the people who ordered the Grey Primes.  I do feel for these people that ordered the same exact product before others who now have their Prime, but will still don’t have their items.
    The communication from Best Buy had been terrible.  Screwing up the orders in the 2 examples are somewhat forgivable to me, but the miscommunication and what seems to be deceitfulness that Best Buy has exhibited is not.  They just seem not to care about the customer any more.  From my experience, prior to the release I was lead to believe my order would be ready to ship on 12/18.  Then it went on backorder with no real reason why.  Two (12/18 and 12/22) of three calls to customer service reps indicated that my Champagne Prime would still arrive by today (12/23), with the other call rep (12/20) saying she basically had no when my item would be in.  Then yesterday afternoon a post from a customer care rep on these boards confirming that I am basically hosed because I choose BB to fulfill my Prime preorder.

  • Theory of MacBook Air + iTunes

    The MacBook Air's max hard disk is 80GB, the same size as the currently-bulging HD in my 2001 laptop. Maybe the Air can't fit the current 120GB or 160GB 1.8" drives because they're thicker.
    However, 25GB of my 80GB is the iTunes music folder, so here is my theory:
    Get an 80GB iPod. Enable half of it for hard disk use. (Buying a 160GB iPod and backing up the laptop onto it (*) seems like a bad temptation since I would take both on the road.)
    Copy my iTunes folder to the HD half of the iPod.
    Copy everything else to the new laptop.
    Tell the laptop's iTunes to use the external iPod HD for its library.
    Pant, grit teeth, tell iTunes to sync the iPod, which in this case means sync one half of the iPod with the other half.
    Use a separate hard drive to back up both iTunes and laptop.
    Besides the occasional syncing of the iPod with itself, the main other problems (both a matter of hassle, not impossibility) are:
    1) If I acquire music, especially iTunes DRM'd songs, on the laptop while without the iPod.
    2) if I want to take some music with me on the laptop without the iPod, i.e., treat the laptop as an iPod to the iPod's iTunes.
    Apple created this problem by making a laptop smaller than an iPod(**). I hope they come up with a better solution. Something like, letting the iPod hold and play from a single master iTunes library, and letting the laptop hold a selected subset plus import cache.

    Meg--
    I'm not talking about reformatting or repartitioning the iPod's disk, just using the ability the iPod already has to make part of its storage available as an external disk for the Mac. It sounds like a partition but it's not.
    The trick I am thinking of is, set the iPod to use half its space for file storage, and store the Mac's iTunes library there (rather than taking up space on the laptop's too-small HD).
    Chris--
    If I manually manage music on the iPod, and erase all music off the laptop once it's copied to the iPod, that means
    a) I have to do that for every new group of songs,
    b) There are various ways I could make a mistake (or the iPod could malfunction) and I would loose some or all of my music
    c) Mainly, I would lose most of the features of iTunes: smart playlists; burning CDs; making backups; editing, processing or sharing song files, etc.
    By "syncing the iPod with itself," I mean, having the iTunes library stored on the iPod as external file storage, then syncing iTunes with the iPod. That would make copies of the files from the iTunes library half of the iPod, onto the music storage half of the iPod. The point is, iTunes would handle this automatically and all my syncing and playlists would work exactly like they do now.
    Chris, you also say, "Why have an external drive at all? The idea of the Mac Air is to minimize what you have."
    I don't know about other people's ideas, but my goal is to minimize the weight while keeping what I have. My 80GB disk is full and Apple doesn't offer a bigger one in the Air. Something's gotta give.
    My idea is this: I don't usually play music on my laptop on the road. Usually, I take my iPod in the car and leave it there. I can shave 25GB off my laptop if I store my music somewhere else. iPods come with three or six times that much storage. That's more than enough to store my iTunes library twice.
    Devin--
    Yes, I could use (part of) an external HD at home for iTunes. USB hub might well end up part of the picture. But using the iPod as both external drive and iPod does use fewer wires. Other possibilities:
    I could keep a separate computer for iTunes at home.
    Maybe there is non-Apple software I could load onto the iPod so I could store one copy of the iTunes library there and play from it. Would have to convert all the .aac's to .mp3 though.
    If the Air had (or would accept) a 160GB disk it would be okay for a couple years.
    If Apple modified iTunes, the iPod could be the music hub and the laptop would be a satellite. And the iPod wouldn't need to store two copies of every song.
    If they did that and the iPhone came with 40GB and Verizon support I could swap my Treo for an iPhone and not gain too much weight.
    But for me, as I think about the Air, this is the best theory I can come up with. I thought I would post the idea here in case someone else is in the same pickle.

  • Why is no season pass available for Big Bang Theory Season 6 in the Australian iTunes Store?

    Season 6 of The Big Bang Theory is now showing in the Australian iTunes Store. So far only one episode is available.
    Where the "Buy Season Pass" button usually is, it instead says, "Partial Season". I can't see any option to buy a season pass.
    Why is this? What does "partial season" mean? If I buy the one episode available, will I later get the option to "Complete" my season? Will the full season eventually be available?
    Thanks anyone for any light you can shed on this.

    You would have to ask whomever holds the U.K. distribution rights to the show.

  • In need of email implementation theory

    i have been avoiding email usage on linux for years because it seems so complicated.  im sure its as simple as the rest, but im not sure i get it, short of seeing a flowchart or something.....
    i would like to set up my lamp server to relay off of our external smtp relay server, or even better use an implemented sendmail smtp server, which i already have 99% implemented, and have it to where the cron job emails that land inside the spool/clientmqueue actually get sent out to my email address.  the whole thing seems a bit cryptic to me.
    what daemon or service is in charge of dispatching those emails out, and what could i be missing in my configurations , or what application is it possible that i need installed to get these emails dispatched out via smtp and sent to my email client inbox?
    my email client is on a windows machine, i just want the linux server box to ship out as much of the reporting to my inbox as possible (cron jobs, apache errors, etc..) so that i dont hvae to dig through logs for those.
    i have send mail installed, i have send mail configured per the wiki.  i have my alias setup to my email address.  i have cron building emails inside the clientmqueue directory.
    i dont think i hvae figured out yet where to configure the external smtp, which leads me to believe that i probably dont even have the sendmail configured correctly either to use its own smtp server.
    where do i start, and can someone give me a (simple) list of all tools that i will need to do this, from start to finish.
    i use cronie
    in short, its not working, and i dont have the flow of these services mapped in my own brain enough to know where to go to troubleshoot.

    Thanks for the response.  That looks like i might be able to use it.
    Is there someone who can explain the theory?  there must be scores of users here that know this technology inside and out. I just want to know the theory behind it, this is to say, the tools and equipment needed in broad terms for an email to get from a cron job to an smtp server.  What tools do i need, what elements do i need to configure, what technology does it use.  This will help me solve my problems myself.

    you need to increment the "accumulator increment" during the duration of the chirp.  the "accumulator increment" controls the frequency of the DDS cycle.  by increasing it's value, you are increasing the frequency.  the math for increment values follows the same math as determining the frequency to increment value.

  • Controlling multiple devices theory

    I have an application theory I would like to get some input on.
    Take an application like a Servo Engine.vi, it controls communication with the servo and dequeues any servo commands from the main.vi to control the servo.
    Now my question is if you have multiple servos:
    -  Is it best to only have 1 engine running and pass the Axis number through the queue?
    -  Is it best to run the engines reentrant, so each one handles each servo?
    I have done this both ways in the past I really don’t know which way is better.
    Thanks, Doug

    Having 1 engine for controlling multiple servo, it sounds simple
    -> probably array of custom data-type can be used
    -> Servo engine could be an action engine.
    Now the only issue I see here, slight latency is expected while controlling multiple servo drives.
    Now moving to, have reentrant engine (multiple clones running, dedicated to each servo), it requires somewhat more coding and is slightly complex
    -> mechanism to address & communicate with the right clone (corresponding to a particular servo drive) needs to be implemented and that is an overhead
    but on the other hand independent engine clones will have negligible latency.
    Lets wait and listen from some of the experts available on board...

  • Time Bomb Theory - the attack of the lemons

    i apologize in advance for starting a new thread. though i appreciate the replies in the previous thread, i didn't think that i was gettin my point across.
    i want to differentiate this thread by re-introducing the idea of the illusion of getting the macbook repaired. my argument was IF the logic boards have been changed to fix the mooing (according to this article http://news.softpedia.com/news/Apple-Acknowledges-MacBook-Whine-And-Offers-Logic -Board-Replacements-31384.shtml ), then the new boards are to blame. but if the restarting problem stems from the original batch, then we might be dealing with a massive case of lemons. if apple did start producing macbooks with the new boards, i'm assuming that this means that every macbook is a ticking time bomb. if i do get my logic board 'replaced', wouldn't it be the same on that is on the production line meaning that it's not getting fixed at all? although there are happy trouble free mac users out there, it might just take longer for the problems to surface on their machines.
    and yes i'm ticked about my situation

    thoughts on the "time bomb theory"

    Your double negative notwithstanding, it doesn't matter that there are hundreds of thousands of satisfied people. I've been on the receiving end of many car and electronics recalls without ever seeing the problem the recall was designed to address. What is looked at is the probability over time that a component or system will fail under certain circumstances and the consequences of that failure. The shutdown problem appears to be widespread and serious enough to suggest that some type of recall may be necessary.

  • How does the LCM rollback feature work in theory?

    Hi
    How does the LCM rollback feature work in theory?
    Let's say
    1. I've Webi report 'x' in QA system
    2. I promote a modified version of webi report 'x' from DEV to QA using LCM. So now I've 'x1' in QA.
    3. I "rollback" this promotion job in LCM. Which means I've get back 'x' in QA system.
    So does this mean that LCM kept a "backup" copy of 'x' in QA (CMS+filestore file backup) before overwriting with the promoted 'x1' from DEV?
    If yes, does it clear the 'x' anytime from QA? (maybe after second iteration of 'x2'?)
    Thanks

  • A theory about trees (ApEx 4.0) regarding save activated node

    Hallo all!
    Can someone please confirm (or not) my theory about trees regarding save activated node in ApEx 4.0(.1):
    With my first tree I tried to set a varchar2-value for the last selected node ... didn't work. After many tries I was succesful with changing this to a numeric value...
    ...Is this a bug or a feature? ;-)
    Btw.
    Another supposing regarding the source-code of trees is that this can't be longer than 4000 bytes. Is this right?
    And if so ... can I put a Funktion in there that returns the statement (like in classic reports, but with static row-structure)?
    Hope this time someone out there is attends my thread.
    With kind regards...

    Hi,
    Pre-Apex4 you could make use of the A1 and A2 columns in the tree SQL along with the tree template to conditional set the color of the node text. Does anyone know how to achieve this in Apex4? I've tried using the tree SQL shown below but this displays the HTML (SPAN tags) as text.
    select case when connect_by_isleaf = 1 then 0
                when level = 1             then 1
                else                           -1
           end as status,
           level,
           '<span style="color:red;">'||"ENAME"||'</span>' as title,
           null as icon,
           "EMPNO" as value,
           null as tooltip,
           null as link
    from "#OWNER#"."EMP"
    start with "MGR" is null
    connect by prior "EMPNO" = "MGR"
    order siblings by "ENAME"Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • A whole lot of crashing - theory..

    Mainstage (2.2.2 and 2.2.1)  had a lot of sudden shut downs lately.. and I`ve been very frustrated about this...
    Today it crashed 3 times within ten minutes...at home when programming a new live show
    But the strange thing was this weekend playing live, it acutally worked perfect, no issues at all...
    The only difference between my live rig and what I use programming at home is a Benq 21" screen plugged via the thunderbolt port.
    So I removed it..... and been working it hard for 4 hours now.. no problem..
    Could it be a Thunderbolt issue? .. anyone else who could test this theory?
    I`m using a 13" MacBookPro (Norwegian info below) ,shipped with Lion , but I`m running Snow Leopard ..(could be an issue here I realize)

    I will post a crash log tomorrw! Going to bed now:)... I`m pretty shure I can recreate the crash by viewing mainstage on the external screen
    But I really dont think I`m doing to much... (except if you mean to much is having a secondary screen)
    When I`m programming patches (sets) for songs, I always do one song at a time (on concert for each) .. and theres is really not much in the one I loaded (and crashed) today three times, before I unplugged my external display. Then all is good.
    Same thing when I was rehearsing at home friday evening before the show saturday, Mainstage shut down so often I just gave up and hoped for the best at the show.
    Everything worked as it should live.... the same concert file.

  • Abstract classes and OO theory...

    I have an OO theory question related to abstract classes and their member variables. I realize opinions will vary from person to person but I'll ask anyway...
    If I'm creating an abstract class, should member variables that will be used by subclasses be private or protected? Why? Either way, they will have accessor methods for classes that instantiate them (where appropriate) but I'm debating whether or not to give subclasses direct access to these variables or not.
    To me, it seems odd to make variables in the abstract class private but I'm curious what your opinions are.
    Thanks...

    I knew you'd say that. I'd like to play along with a for-instance, if you will allow ... here's an example parent class:
    public abstract class ProvideMenu   extends JFrame {
      protected              JMenuBar       jmbar;
      protected              JMenu          jmfile,
                                            jmedit,
                                            jmhelp;
      protected              JMenuItem      jmfnew,
                                            jmfopen,
                                            jmfsave,
                                            jmfsaveas,
                                            jmfprint,
                                            jmfexit,
                                            jmecopy,
                                            jmepaste,
                                            jmhabout,
                                            jmhcontents;
      public ProvideMenu() {
        jmbar       = new JMenuBar();
        jmfile      = new JMenu( FILE_MENU );
        jmedit      = new JMenu( EDIT_MENU );
      public abstract void aMeth();
    }Now the subclass does not need to provide setProvideMenuFont( new Font( ... ) ) and Font getProvideMenuFont() methods, setProvideMenuEnabled(), etc. but can use the standard methods setFont, getFont setBackground(), setEnabled, etc, etc.
    Mind you I'm not advocating this ... what I am doing is trying to open the discussion up a bit - I hope no one minds ... what better design - just a for-instance - would you advocate?
