My Thunderbolt display has gone noticeably dim with the mis-press of a button.

I have a dual monitor set up with a brand new 15" MBP and Thunderbolt display. I was working on the Thunderbolt display and pressed a key and now my screen is noticeably dimmer, even though brightness settings are all the way up. Once I unplug the display from my MBP, the MBP takes on the settings and becomes noticeably dimmer regardless of the brightness settings turned up. I'm unsure as to how to fix this. Any tips on what I can do or mistakes I may have made?

After a few reboots of my Mac, reconnects to the display, and restarts of iTunes, the problem seems to be gone. I am unable to reproduce it now. So, yay! But for a while I was quite concerned. I haven't the slightest idea what was causing this problem, but there were many factors at play. Like playing to multiple sources in iTunes, equalizer settings, etc. I jut simply don't know enough about the technology.

Yes. The New Retina MacBook Pro has two Thunderbolt ports. Plug the display into one of the Thunderbolt ports.

Has anyone noticed this with the 1.2C BIOS?

The temperature goes back to normal (dodgy high temps) after flashing the BIOS and cold booting the PC. But after that, if you just go into BIOS as you're booting your PC and then leave by saving to cmos and leaving, the temps are lower again.
Happens for me anyway, my NB temps are always at around 45C regardless of what I do though. I'd still like to know if this is normal.

I've gone so far as to replace the teensy NB heatsink, and put a much larger active one on. I did this after I saw its temp skyrocket to 57C , along with huge reliability probs. The trusty finger test verified that the cooler was really toasty.
When the old sink came off, thermal goop was only on about 1/3rd of the chip and all bunched in one corner. Frankly I wasn't impressed with MSI at this point. I put a modded Zalman passive cooler to make it fit around my vid card and to be able to mount a 40mm x 25mm fan on it's side. I have tons of airflow through my case with 4x80mm + 1x120mm + 3 PSU fans + Water cooling. With alkl that cooling and airflow I should be able to chill my beer in there while my compy hovers a foot off my desk!
I'm running 1.2 b12 bios, and temp still hangs around 45C even with the active cooler. My system is not OC'ed. Is this temp for real? I mean the chipset does not have a VPU, or a memory controller. This temp is at idle! It really should not be getting this hot. CPU stays around 29-32C.

Help. display has gone permanently dim!

i was downloading some things, fell asleep, i remember seeing the screen saver activated at some point. When i awoke the screen was black, the computer had gone to sleep. When i moved the mouse the screen activated yet it only returned to the dim screen(pre sleep brightness). the brightness slider in the Display preferences menu moves yet the screen brightness doesnt change. The manual controls (f1 f2) also have no effect. Since i was downloading at the time im wondering if it is a software problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

1. Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down apple/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys.
2. The screen brightness controls are only active when the ambient light levels are low, cover the back of both speakers to mimic darkness and see if they work then.

Display has gone very dim

A couple of days ago, I left the dashboard on for a few hours because I was monitoring the weather conditions. I then turned off the dashboard, but the screen did not return to its normal brightness level. I cranked the brightness all the way to the top, just to get it to somewhere near the proper level -- however, it is still a bit on the dark side.
I have tried rebooting, but that didn't help.
This computer is about 8 months old.

likely to be some part of the backlight assembly, but could be the screen. Parts are available in the UK, but of course you will also pay for disassembly and fitting (at a guess £200-300 all in). Its worth plugging in an external display, if this works fine then it is probably the backlight. there are a number of "spares or repair" PB's on ebay, they don't sell for much. My PB is in the same state at the moment!

Safari display has gone nuts

Yesterday my Safari display has gone nuts. Just displays a long list of items on the website....no graphics and the links don't work. Every site is the same.
I did a restart.....I did a shutdown....still the same.
Firefox works fine.
I tried to find a download to reinstall Safari but no luck.
How can I get Safari working again?

Well, I only have one extension: AdBlock. I disable that and now it works fine...everything is loading.
But it used to work fine with adblock enabled. What has changed?
Without Adblock I find Safari difficult to use.

Satellite L350-170 display has gone funny pictures

i have a Satellite L350-170 but the display has gone funny pictures have started to look like negatives and colours are not the same also and there is like ghost screens underneath my current screen.
I have tried unistalling drivers and reinstalling but its just the same

Test the notebook in connection with external monitor.
Check if the same funny pictures would be visible on external monitor.
I think if the same will appear on second monitor, then the issue might be related to graphic card.
In such case the motherboard with the GPU chip should be replaced.

Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver

I rummaged around in here looking at opengl topics and others associated with the above error, but I'm not seeing what I'm encountering (or I am and I don't recognize it!).....
I bought CS4 a week or so ago, and installed it on a system running XP32 with service pack 3, 4GB of ram withe the /3GB switch set, nVidia 8600 GT card (which according to the list is supported), and multiple spindles for images, scratch, applications, and so on. I found other topics earlier so I downloaded the most recent drivers for my video card.
I'm not crashing and burning, but I'm getting some messages...
I opened an image, and while working on it I wanted to do a transform/warp. I got the message that Photoshop couldn't perform the operation because there wasn't enough memory. It didn't crash but I had to shut down CS4 and restart it to do the warp.
Most recently I opened a couple images for a panorama, and while doing the merge I got the message that "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled gpu enhancements." It tells me to check for the latest drivers - I've ALREADY got the lastest drivers. Again, no crash, just the warning. It completed the panorama.
There have been a couple other occurrences of messages of this type, so I'm curious if there's some set of preferences or system settting I need to adjust to optimize things? I've alrady adjusted the nVidia settings because I also run Lightroom and they're having problems too.
I've read the tech notes for the video and such and didn't find any set of optimizations there so is there a set of adjustments beyond the preferences that needs to be adjusted to improve memory and video performance? And if so, can someone point me to them.

As I understand it (suspect at best) XP32 can address 4 gig of memory. the /3gb switch lets the applications get at 3 gig of that. If my video card takes the first 256MB, and XP is guaranteed the other 750 of the 1st gig, and in the CS4 performance preferences I should be giving it from 1462 - 1895 MB (I've given it around 1890), that leaves me with another gig or so... Is that limited to applications or can XP use it? In any case, I'm not crashing, I just get the message every so often about being out of memory. I don't recall ever seeing this with CS3, but new version, new oddities...

Photoshop CS5.1 Crashes Upon Opening: "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver-"

Every time I try to open photoshop I get a window that pops up and says:
"Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer's website for the latest software.
GPU enhancements can be enable in the Performance panel of Preferences."
Then windows shuts the program down. The details of the problem are:

I've updated the drivers and tried a few solutions that have worked for other people that I found on Google (such as disabling CUDA and setting my "power management mode" to "prefer maximum performance" on my video card) but so far nothing has worked.

It has stopped crashing because somehow it turned off "Enable GL Drawing" on its own because I could never even get a menu open. Not sure how it did that but I am grateful. I still get the error when I open Photoshop up but at least it hasn't crashed yet. At the time when it was crashing I never would have been able to get you the system info due to the speed that it was crashing upon just opening the program. In case you still need it:

There is no display on Apple Thunderbolt display, when Daisy chain connect with six LaCie Little Big Disks.

Is it because the hardware limitation that Thunderbolt daisy chan can only have maximum 6 Thunderbolt deivce?
Apple Thunderbolt Display Should be DP1.2, why it doesn’t display?

Sorry, its not an external display. I changed out THE display in my imac. When I hooked up my wife's display it was photo negative and the imac was color. I changed the Universal Settings and the external display went to color and the imac went to photo negative.

My Macbook air charges fine with the Thunderbolt screen connection but only sometimes with the 45 W chargers. It seems to be the combination of the chargers and the computer. I was thinking whether the Thunderbolt screen has a larger power supply which easier activates the computer to actually receive the charge. It reminds me a bit of the Nokia Lumia 800 telephone, which when totally exhausted needs a strong charger to be activated again. I am as frustrated as most others. I have got two chargers, and both of them sometimes work, other times not. Sometimes, they start working after a while. Is Apple meanwhile coming up with a solution or advice how to handle such situation?

I just got my ATD and late 2011 MBP up and running. I've not tried running without the power adapter from the ATD plugged in, but I just tried and didn't have any problems with the display not waking. You may want to take your query to the ATD forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/peripherals/thunderbolt_display - perhaps someone there has experienced a similar issue.

My Windows 7 crashed a couple days ago after a windows update, I got this message.
Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

Looking at the Logs all I can tell is that after the Desktop Window Manager started if caused this error.
The winlogon notification subscriber <SessionEnv> was unavailable to handle a notification event.

hi do the following
1. In Search programs and files (Windows 7) area, type in regedit, and press Enter.
2. If prompted click yes,
3. expand the following HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
4. click the sid that related to your admin profile (if you not sure, click each sid and in turn look to the right hand side of registry editor it will show who that sid is related to one of the registry files should hae in description localhost\admin or
something similair)
5. right click the sid and press delete.
6. restart your machine and log back on with the admin account, this will then rebuild the admin profile... dont worry when it loads and none of your personal settings are saved or files or folders... go to c:\users
in here you will see two folders for the admin account, one will be just admin and the other most likely admin.localhost
i cant remember which one is which but just check both, one will still have all your files and folders in it.
i suggest making a backup of your data before doing this incase something does go wrong, but ive had this happen many times in a domain enviorment and has worked for me everytime.

Hi. Trying to connect iomega ext. HD. i have to reformat for Mac. When i plug in & go to Disk Utility,the external shows up and i'm supposed to click "partition". When i do, a box comes up saying ""Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I quit and relaunched, same results. After googling my question, i came up with this:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
(Quitting and reopening Disk Utility does not help.)
The following also appears in Console log:

Workaround
Quit Disk Utility.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder....
Type the following, then click OK: /Library/Receipts
Temporarily remove these iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts (sort the folder alphabetically as a list):
iTunes.pkg
iTunes4.pkg
You can put them on the desktop, for example. Do not remove iTunesX.pkg or iTunes Phone Driver.pkg.
Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
Quit Disk Utility.
Put the removed iTunes receipts back in /Library/Receipts.
Note: This issue does not affect Disk Utility's verify or repair disk features.
All seemed good, for a moment, until, upon going back to Disk Utility after removing itunes4.pkg and putting on desktop (i did not have itunes.pkg to remove) the same thing was happening. When i highlite my iomega ext. on left of page, disk perrmissions is grayed and does not allow me to click on it. Same problem from the start. Can somebody please help me out here? That would soooo awesome. Thanx!

You shouldn't be scared of that, because you should already have backups. If you don't have backups, then backing up is the first priority.
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and restart. When you hear the chime, hold down the C key and keep holding it until the Apple logo appears on the display. You should now see the language selection screen. Select your language, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In the Disk Utility window, select the external drive (not the internal). The drive may already have a data partition, in which case there will be another icon below the drive icon. Choose the drive icon, then select the Partition tab. Create a single partition with the default options (GUID partition table, Mac OS X Extended Journaled).
When the partitioning is done, select the startup volume on your internal drive in the DU window. Select the Restore tab. Drag the icon of the startup volume to the "Source" field. Then drag the icon of the newly-created volume on the external drive to the "Destination" field. Make sure you have this right. Then click the Restore button, and the data on your startup volume will be copied to the external drive.

Well Bababooey if you're comparing yourself to a Apple Genius Bar then you should already know my answer, your snarky remark get a snarky reply. Why would I go to a salesperson to fix my computer problem when I can go directly go to the source itself. I used to sell Apple computers over 8 years ago and was apple certified before the Genius bar existed. If I am to go about fixing an issue I can't fix on my own I will go to the source itself meaning Apple's programmers and developers - being UI UX Developer myself I know they should have QA'd all platforms and troubleshooted any arising issues.
This was also the first time in the 20 years I've been using a Mac that I even attempted to go on this forum which i thought would put me in connection with a certified Apple representative. This turned out to be a complete waste of time just being a public forum with no Apple employee involved. I was hoping to find a quick fix but in turn I was only frustrated with stupid responses such as yours that were in no way an answer to my original question.
BTW I fixed the issue on my own and without your help or Apples help. I'm glad if all forums point here regarding this issue because I now have the answer. The answer I was looking for from someone earlier was as simple as this {Download Maverick and reinstall the platform - it will take an hour to do but afterward 10.9.2 was installed and my computer is now able to shutdown and restart without having to do a hard boot.} No more software update bar at top and no problems with my drive which I told both you and Grant - I know my computer better than you and I've probably been using them longer than you.
So again Babowa you were so wrong...... and I am right.
Again anyone having the same problem, I suggest reinstalling Maverick and you'll be suprised 10.9.2 will work fine.
