My Tiger eMac only has a 14 gigs free. will Leopard work?

I'm not near the eMac now but I got it around 2001/2003. It came with OSX and 9 and not a very big HD. I think 60mb.
I was thinking of getting the iWork,iLife,Leopard box but even if I could get Leopard to fit i wonder about being able to fit anything else on it.
I already have iTunes and iPhoto on an external drive and they are both pretty slow to open.
Actually , the whole computer is pretty slow .
would Leopard effect the external drive performance or perhaps slow it down even more ?

thanks Kappy
Well i have 700 MHz PowerPC G4 with 640 MB SDRAM
The HD is 38.15 !! Can you believe it? That's what you got back then.:)
If I was somehow I was able to make enough room on the HD would the 700 MHz still make it not a good idea ?
thanks again

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2 gigs ram,  will it work with adobe Mercury playback Engine for accelerated rendering for Premeire Pro cs6?

I am a PC guy but, I have 6 work stations with CS6 but the wife wants a Mac so I am getting her an imac with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2 gigs ram. Do you think this video card in the mac will still be able to utilize the Adobe CS6 MPE?
It's not formally supported by Adobe for GPU acceleration; however judging from the fact that the lesser GTX-650M is (with 6.02 update), and the end-user ability to enable support for unsupported cards in Adobe apps, it should work.

  • IPhoto books in iPhoto -  The new Photos program only has square photo books.  Will I be able to edit/order books with iPhoto after I upgrade to Photos?

I have many photo books created in iPhoto.  These are rectangular shaped.  The new Photos program only has square shaped books.  After I upgrade to Photos, will I still be able to order books using iPhoto?  Or, will Photos allow me to edit books in their original rectangle shape, and order them?

The new Photos.app will have the classic rectangular sizes as well.
    See the Preview.
    Apple - OS X - Photos Preview
It only mentions the new square format, but the classic layouts are there as well, as the picture shows.
But you may not be able to migrate the old book projects. Finish any current book project while still using iPhoto '11 and create new projects in Photos.

  • My iPad only has a blank screen, it will not open at all. I tried to restore and that did nothing. I am not sure how to proceed. It is charged.

My iPad only has a blank screen. If you press the two buttons to try to get it to restart all you get is a faint light for al few seconds and then it goes back to a black screen. I did try to restore by hooking up to my mac, but I still have nothing.

First thing to try is a reboot of your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
Hold those buttons a long time before letting them go. Also it might be best to leave the iPad on the charger overnight before resetting it.
If this doesn't work, it's time to make an appointment at an Apple store for a Consultation.

okay so my brother had put my phone in microwave , it now only turns on on charger, the date and time cahnged, but it will not let me use the screen, is there anyway this can be fixed ?or how much it would cost.

I would very much doubt that. The radition level inside a microwave is termendous. I am totally flabbergasted that there is much of it is still that much working.

  • What is the difference between OSX 10.6 and 10.6 server? I need to install Snow Leopard in a Parallels VM and it only allows 10.6 server. Will Rosetta work if I use the server edition?

I MUST use an app that was discontinued which requires Rosetta, yet I also want to upgrade to Mavericks. I was told that Parallels and VMWare Fusion both support running Snow Leopard SERVER, but not Snow Leopard. Two questions: Will Rosetta run on Snow Leopard Server when it is running inside the Parallels/Fusion/whatever virtual machine which is running under Mavericks? The second question is: Is there any problem with running any specific software in Snow Leopard Server when it is set up this way?

    Richard Cartledge wrote:
The problem with client as virtualised OS is the Apple EULA, not a technical one.
I don't know if it works, or you're just not meant to do it.
PS. If you download or have Snow Leopard DVD, you can install Rosetta in later OSs, certainly Lion and Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
insert your Snow Leopard disc, open the Optional Installs folder on that disc, and double-click the Optional Installs.mpkg package. The Installer will open and you’ll be prompted to click Continue a couple of times and then choose a destination for the installation. Choose your startup volume and click Continue yet again.
In the Custom Install on “nameofvolume” window that appears, enable the Rosetta option and click Continue. In the next window click Install to do just that.
NB/ I don't have any old software to test to see if it actually makes it work!
    WRONG TWICE!
Bad idea to attempt to install Rosetta into Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks and good luck trying to remove it after that attempt.  Result: NO powerpc app will run after that installation and you will have to complete a wipe of your hard drive and a complete pre-Rosetta install to get rid of Rosetta!
It was a common Urban Myth that the Snow Leopard EULA prohibited its virtualization in Lion or Mt. Lion on a Mac.  That myth has been largely debunked over the last two years.
In addition, Apple's release of Snow Leopard Server at a 95% discount ($20) has rendered the issue largely moot!
OP: what application are we talking about here?
For example here is the long beloved powerpc application Appleworks running in Snow Leopard Server installed in Parallels for use in a post Lion world:

  • My ipod touch 64 gig with 27 gig free will not allow me to play movies I've sunk from itunes.

I sync movies from my itunes to my ipod touch. The movies are a light grey color and will not play. This has occurred recently. I just discovered that Movies in setting needed to have me signed into apple with my apple id. I now have the apple id logged in under movies in setting on my ipod touch. The movie remains grey. I just rebooted. No changes to color or function of movie. I go to the cloud and load it, the movie works.
I have had my ipod touch for several years and have never experienced this issue in the past. Please help me find answers?

If you don't want a playlist on your iphone, then uncheck that playlist under the music tab, and sync.
You cannot have sync all music checked as this will sync ALL music.

  • IPad screen has gone blue/green and will not work

My iPad 1 screen has gone to black when it is turned on and willl not work. Screen stays blue/green for about 30 seconds and then turns off. Unit is charged fully and has been updated to current operating software. Gerry

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If that doesn't work then you could see if you can get it into recovery mode and restore it to your last backup : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
But you might need to contact Apple.

  • Shuffle has been sitting on shelf, will it work?

My wife won the shuffle almost two years ago.  It's been sitting on a shelf.  Will it work if I charge it up?  Or is it a lost cause at this point?  I think I should just go to a store and say I want a different color (with no receipt) but my wife doesn't think that is honest.

Will it work if I charge it up?  Or is it a lost cause at this point?
Maybe, but likely not as the iPod's lithium ion battery needs constant activity in order to help maintain any sort of charge. Why not give it a try?

  • How can I install OSX Tiger from a DVD if my iBook G3 600mhz only has a CD?

I just purchased this iBook for my wife as a starter laptop for her as I love Macs and iBooks and I know she will be better off with one than the HP laptop she has. It is in pristine condition. The only problem is that the iBook is loaded with OS X 10.1.4 which is outdated and needs an upgrade. I found my old Tiger DVD and wanted to upgrade but the iBook only has a CD drive. I do not have an external DVD drive or such. What can I do? Can I copy the info off of the DVD onto a Pen Drive? Any suggestions? Please help. Thank you so much!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you want to run Mac OS X 10.4, you need to upgrade the iBook's RAM. Mac OS X 10.4 requires a minimum of 256 MB of RAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514?viewlocale=en_US
Although a 128 MB module would get the iBook up to the minimum required by Mac OS X 10.4, I strongly recommend that you maximize the RAM with a 512 MB RAM module. It takes a 144-pin, 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM.
Instructions for adding the RAM can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111918
Once you get the RAM upgraded, you can attach the iBook G3 to your iBook G4 with a FireWire cable and use the iBook G4's optical drive to upgrade the iBook G3 with Mac OS X 10.4 (assuming that you have the full retail DVD, and not an upgrade DVD or one that came with another Mac).
Instructions for doing that can be found in these two articles:
    http://www.oreillynet.com/mac/blog/2005/05/thecats_mustachesinstalling.html
    http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0710.html
    Good luck!

  • I have the ipod touch 64 gig and it only has 59 gigs available

i originally had the 32 gig itouch and it only had just under 30 gigs avaiable. but i exchanged it for the 64 gig version and yet it only has 59 gigs avaiable. why are 5 gigs remaining since its obviously not due to software or anything. seems like a big rip-off with nearly 10% of the memory missing.

so in other words apple purposly misleads cunsumers?? one would assume that if you purchased something with 64 gigs of memory the "true" storage space would be something nearing 64 gigs. then minus whats needed for the OS. We're not talking about a 500 gig harddrive where a little space loss doesnt matter much (though it is still rediculous) if apple knows that there is only going to be 59 gigs available to the consumer then advertising 64 gigs is fraud. it should be advertised as 59 gigs and priced accordingly. seems to me that maybe they are trying to save some money by cutting corners, im just surprised this hasnt become a massive issue. 64 gigs is a pittling amount of space but theres no choice as they dont have a larger size. but to then suddenly say well thats not what you actually get and lop off 5 gigs for NOTHING. 1 or 2gig for the sake of the OS i could understand completely but 5 gigs for absolutly no reason is just plain stupid.
Again this is just me but a company that knows its customers are not going to get what they are advertising is just plain wrong.

  • MBP will not start, only has 99Mb free

Hello, I am trying to fix a friends Macbook Pro, which will not start. The logo appears with the spinning cog, but nothing else - it can stay on this screen for hours. I tried to reinstall Tiger, and then discovered that it only has 99Mb free, and Tiger needs more space.
I can access Terminal, but I am not familiar with UNIX to be able to do anything there. Is there a way of accessing the hard disk via my own iMac or wife's MBP through Firewire so we can delete something. I guess Target mode will not work, as there is not enough space to start the OS. Any help appreciated.
Our friends MBP is one of the original, 1.8Ghz Core Duo with 512Mb RAM.

The computer will probably still boot up in TD mode, Simon, even though it can't boot the Mac.
When used as the boot disk the computer needs plenty of free space to set up virtual memory areas and the like. That is one of the reasons why you should always make sure that there are always quite a few Gigabytes free for safe operation (Never let it get below 10% free space and try to maintain around 20% or more if, for example, you ever burn video, or other very large files).
TD mode essentially turns the computer into just another external HD, and the process occurs before it really needs to make use of the internal drive in the boot cycle.
So give it a go (just hold down "t" while starting the MBP). Your iMac should then see it as a second, external, HD.
Don't try and install any OS until you have cleared LOTS of space - 50 Gig or more in a situation like this where many of the files themselves will have become badly fragmented (because the normal OSX processes for defragging can't operate when a drive gets this full) . In fact I'd STRONGLY suggest that you back up or clone the entire drive to an external, or to another computer, wipe the internal, and only then start putting things back on. Otherwise you will have horrendous levels of free space fragmentation.
    Cheers

  • Time Machine now has lost 60 + gigs of data

I had continual problems with getting Time Machine to work over the weekend. I finally turned off Spotlight indexing of the volume that I used for Time Machine and it has worked great for two days.
Today, now my drive says that I have 170 gigs available on the hard drive. It's only shows that 19 gigs have been backed up. Up until this point my backups had been over 79 gigs.
Where oh where did my data go. Where did my data go. It's also now in a continual "finishing back up" message.
Time Machine is not very good. Apple has really stunk this up. But I am sure they are glad to have sold 2 million copies over the weekend.

It is an iMac G5 2.0ghz. 1gig Ram. Yes I have looked at all of that and the stuff is just gone.
I then deleted the back up. Went restart time machine. I get and I/O problem now which other people are getting. This drive worked completely fine while connected to Tiger. It had all my back up from Tiger.
The only way I got Time Machine to work correctly in the first place was to turn of Spotlight on the external drive. For some reason today Spotlight was reset and it started indexing the drive. This is where the problem started. Now I am back to square one with it working perfectly fine for 2 1/2 days.

I am halfway through my 4s contract and wanted to buy a 5, but only see the 64 gig available to me for 649 but that requires a 2 year contract. Where can I buy w ou getting locked into a contract and for how much?

Your contract is with your service provider - it has nothing at all to do with Apple.
You can buy a contract free and/or unlocked iPhone from Apple and use it with whatever carrier you wish.  Your contract terms with your current service provider remain in effect for your iPhone 4s though, so if you cancel with them (or port your number out, which accomplishes the same thing) you will owe them early termination fees and so forth.
Even if you pay full retail but want to use the phone with your current service provider, you are still obligated to complete the terms of your existing contract.

  • Streaming Server only has ip address

I want to broadcast content using the streaming server.
It correctly streams from the web server but I want to use the streaming server, however there is only an ip address to stream from in the drop down menu....
How do I get the Streaming server to see all the domains on our server ?
For web it see's only one for streaming it just see's an ip address.
In QT settings on the admin panel there seems to be no way to alter any of this..

Yes, I do have the cable and the pc laptop. I did a search on the laptop and found the Hyperterminal application. I opened it and it offered me a selection of how to connect. I am assuming is TCP/IP. What should I write under host address and port number? As the DHCP server in my school, this is how is set up, my server has a manual IP, e.g, 10.37.100.6, the router has an IP of 10.37.100.1 and the clients have a IP address that ranges from 10.37.100.2 to 10.37.100.254. What do you mean when you say "the static IP of your server is out of the range of DHCP addresses you are leasing out"? The server's IP was given to me by the DHCP server administrators. What's really odd is that under Panther, the alert message would come on and I would loose connection to the server, however I noticed yesterday afternoon that with Tiger, after shutting down half of the stations the server worked, however when I turned on the other half the alert came on but the clients didn't loose the connection to the server. In reference to link aggregation, which by the way looks very interesting, the XServe came with an extra ethernet card but nothing was connected to it. Can you use link aggregation with Mac OS 10.4.8 not server with cable modem connection to speed up your conection?
