My Time Capsule acts as if backing up, but restarts process repeatedly without completing back up

I have a Time Capsule 1TB 802.11n, model # A1335 and use it for wifi and to back up my MacBookPro (circa 2011) running OS10.6.8.  It has always worked fine.  It is now acting as if a proper back up is taking place... finding disk, scanning items, calculating changes, preparing items, then stopping back up during clean up and restarting the whole process without ever completing the back up.  That is using wifi.  I also used ethernet direct from laptop and it was the same, except it got to deleting old fines before starting again without back up completing.  I had reset (just unplug way, more than once), had aslo reset (unplugged) my xfinity router which is attached to the Time Capsule and the Time Capsule.  I also had restarted my laptop.  Still same problem. I can access the Time Capsule disk/data that is on the TC, but nothing will add, just acts like in an endless loop. I can back up to my external portable Seagate back up plus drive.  Any other steps I can take?  From what I see on Apple support, maybe a "hard restart"?  I would like to have a good back up on the Time Capsule before converting to Yosemite, the one on TC is 3 wks old due to vacation, although I do have my portable drive up to date.   Am considering going ahead with system upgrade to Yosemite and trusting the portable will suffice as a back up it there are problems, but am not sure.   I temporarily changed by back ups solely to the portable drive.   Any suggestions besides a visit to Genius Bar?  Any help appreciated.

A1355 is now 4-5years old.. and well past its useby date.
I suspect the backup on it is corrupt.. so I recommend you actually erase the TC via the airport utility..
I would be tempted to do a one pass erase rather than quick erase.. the Gen3 TC used samsung spinpoint drives.. of less than brilliant quality.
A one pass erase (zero out data)  is a low level format of the whole drive.. it will take several hours but will prove if the disk has gone bad. Or at least mark bad sectors as such and remove them from the allocation table.
Then do a fresh clean backup (assuming the TC survives).. using your ethernet cable with wireless turned off.
That first backup is the key to data integrity of the backup.
Since you plan to then upgrade ?? (it might really seem like a downgrade once you get there). to Yosemite.. I would do a Clone of the hard disk.. you do this to your USB drive.. Carbon Copy Cloner will give you a month full working trial and it will produce a bootable clone of the computer on the USB. That means if at some point you wish to go back to old OS you can easily by booting the clone.. and doing a clone back to the internal drive.
This is hugely better than TM.. because you have an actual working bootable disk.. You can use superduper as alternative.. You can produce a clone with disk utility but apple will not allow it to be bootable.
You can then test the backup with a bootable clone by simply restarting the computer.. hold down the option key and choose the clone for boot. In 3 minutes you will know if the backup is good or not.. this is great and will get you out of trouble if you have issues with Yosemite.. TM won't.

If I connect an external hard drive to the Time Capsule, will it automatically back it up? Or do I need to somehow configure it in TIme Machine?

A HDD attached to the Time Capsule (TC) will not automatically back it up, nor can you configure Time Machine to do so. However, you can use the AirPort Utility to archive the contents of your TC's internal HDD to this attached drive.

  • I have a Time Capsule on which I back up 2 MacBooks and on my wife's machine she keeps having Airport Utility popping up all the time with a yellow button flashing on the left and a Red button on the right side with a "1" in the middle of it.

I have a Time Capsule on which I back up 2 MacBooks and on my wife's machine she keeps having Airport Utility popping up all the time with a yellow button flashing on the left and a Red button on the right side with a "1" in the middle of it. Can any one tell me what is wrong. I read where when the yellow light was flashing there was a problem, but I am a novice at this and have no idea where to turn. It seems to be backing up on a regular basis.

    On the Mac......
Open up Macintosh HD > Applicatons > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the small window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Change the setting for Router Mode from the current DHCP and NAT to read Off (Bridge Mode), then click Update at the lower right of the window, and wait a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.
    Then.....very important
Power off the Time Capsule and your Arris modem/router for a few minutes
Start up the Arris first, and let it run a few minutes by itself
Start up the Time Capsule next the same way
Your network will now be correct, and your printing capabilities will improve.
If Time Machine backups do not occur now, post back and we will tackle that next.

  • Using time capsule solely as a back up device

I have a very advanced AC router that is a great home network. I want to use my time capsule solely as a back up device -- for my imac, which is ethernet wired to my router, and my kids' two macbook airs, which connect to the ac router wirelessly.  Can I hook up the time capsule by ethernet cable to the exiting router, and disable the wireless functionality of the time capsule? I dont want two competing wireless netorks in the house.

It is counterintuitive, but you must first set up the Time Capsule to create a wireless network.......which you don't need, but it will automatically choose the correct Bridge Mode setting for the Time Capsule....which you do need.
Once the Time Capsule is setup to create a network, then you have to go back in using AirPort Utility and turn off the wireless function of the Time Capsule.
Here is how to do it:
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> Ethernet ports on your AC router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the iMac's screen and look for a listing of Time Capsule under a heading of New AirPort Base Station. The illustration below pictures an AirPort Extreme.
    Then, click on Time Capsule
The setup utility will open up automatically and suggest that you create a new network, with a screen like this, except you will see a picture of the Time Capsule:
Type in a short name for the Network
Type in a name that you want to call the Time Capsule. Use a short name.  Mine is TC
Type in a password for the Time Capsule
    Verify the password
    Click Next
The utility will set up everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
Now click on the picture of the Time Capsule
Click Edit and enter the password if required
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the screen
Change the setting for Network Mode from Create a wireless network to Off
Click Update at the lower right of the window and wait a minute for the Time Capsule to restart.
    You are all set.

  • Where are my photos?  just tried to access time capsule after my first back up and am unable to open iphoto to verify they were backed up.

where are my photos?  just tried to access time capsule after my first back up and am unable to open iphoto to verify they were backed up.

You can't open your backups directly with apps.
But you can see some types of files in your backups.  If you're still on Snow Leopard (or Lion with iPhoto '09 or earlier), see the gray box at the end of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15.
If you're on Lion with iPhoto '11, you can use the Finder to see the iPhoto library, per the beginning of that same link.  All you can see there is the library and size.

  • Can I backup my laptop on the time capsule that is currently backing up my iMac data?

Can I backup my Apple laptop on my time capsule which is currently backing up my iMac?

Yes, assuming that there is ample room on the Time Capsule disk for all of the files on your laptop.

  • How can I be sure that the back up to my time capsule has backed everything up as when I enter time capsule and interogate the back ups i can't identify individual music or picture files?

How can I confirm that the back up to my time capsule has backed everything up as when I enter time capsule and interrogate the backs ups I can't identify individual photo or music files?

You cannot browse a Time Machine backup with the Finder. To restore individual music files or any other files normally available in the Finder, open your Music folder then "Enter Time Machine" using the Time Machine icon.
Restoring individual photographs is slightly more cumbersome. Apple recommends restoring the entire iPhoto Library, but if you want to locate an individual photograph you could use Time Machine to restore the old Libary. Restore it to an alternate location to avoid overwriting your existing one. Open iPhoto while holding an Option key, open the restored Library, find the photo you need and export it, close iPhoto, re-open it with your usual Library, and import the photo.
Time Machine depends upon a number of sound engineering principles for reliable operation, one of which is "faith"
Your files will remain intact until your Time Machine backup device becomes inoperative.

  • HT1178 Can I install Time Capsule strictly as a back-up to my local devices?

Can I install Time Capsule strictly as a back-up to my Windows laptop and Apple devices without using it as an Airport Extreme Base Station? I do not want to use my Time Capsule as my access to the Internet, just as a back-up. I have U-verse voice and data services and am using their wireless router to connect to the Internet.

    You are asking multiple questions..
The setup of the TC can have a whole bunch of variations. If you followed the instructions to plug in by ethernet and turn off wireless, then all connection is via the uverse modem router.
    TerrenceV wrote:
Thank you.  Since I am not using my TC to connect to the Internet - I have U-verse, so I installed AT&T's wireless router - it was recommended that I put the TC into bridge mode and connect it to the router using the ethernet.  Without wireless, how do I send my backups to the TC?
If you don't use wireless then you use ethernet.. it can be plugged into either the uverse router or the TC..makes no difference.
Should I disconnect the ethernet, re-establish wireless, and let all my Apple and Windows 7 devices use their active wireless connections to backup to the TC?  If so, how do I direct the backups to TC?  I have Airport installed on my Windows 7 primary computer.  Again, thanks for the help.
Why do you want to use wireless if you have ethernet? Ethernet is much better and faster.
If ethernet is not available you can use wireless.. if you turned off wireless in the TC.. then all connections will be via the uverse .. TC .. nothing wrong with that.
If you leave the TC wireless on.. then you can connect to TC instead and use TC. That is also fine.. makes no difference .. use what works.
I think you need to play some more.. you questions show you are not understanding the fundamentals..
In bridge the TC is a dumb hard drive.. plus switch.. plus wireless AP.
Plugged into the uverse router.. it is like the uverse router now has more switch ports.. a secondary wireless AP and a hard disk.. they are effectively one unit. Any connection to uverse is connection to TC.. any connection to TC is connection to uverse..

  • Can apple time capsule act as a wireless hard drive storage by Samsung smart tv?

Can apple time capsule act as a wireless hard drive storage by Samsung smart tv? Samsung smart tv is connected to apple time capsule through wireless  as a modem at the moment

If you look on the right side there pops up similar questions.. which works better than search btw..
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16432256#16432256
The Samsung.. may not be able to see the Time Capsule hard disk..
because it does not contain any files it can read.
because it is not conformed to standard SMB file system.. the TC name is often illegal.. remove all spaces and special characters and keep it short.
Same for wireless name and all passwords.
There is no media player in the TC so it is useless for your TV even if it can see the hard drive .. the TC is a dumb backup device.

Can time capsule be configured to back up mixed mac/pc networks?

That may work, but there are complications to putting Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details and some workarounds.

Back up is very slow on 2 tb time capsule. After 2 days only 60 gb of 320 gb completed. Have connected ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

Yes, that's terribly slow.  You should get somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-24 GB/hour via Ethernet, assuming there isn't a lot of conflicting network traffic or your Mac's CPU is under very heavy load.
Are you sure you're actually using the Ethernet connection, instead of WIFI?   To check, turn Airport off.  If the backup fails, it's on WIFI.  In that case, you need to set Ethernet as the "preferred" network, via System Preferences > Network.  Click the "gear" icon at the bottom of the sidebar and select Set Service order.  Then drag Ethernet above Airport.  When both Airport and Ethernet are on, that will make OSX select Ethernet over Airport.
If that doesn't help, see #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Time Capsule. Can I back up 2 different macs? What do I have to do.

Time Capsule. Can I back up 2 different macs? What do I have to do.
I want to be able to back up 2 mac. Both have about 70gs of stuff and I have a 1 tb drive. So that should be no problem. I have the time capsule already set-up wireless.
Do I have to make 2 folders? One for each computer? If so how do I do this.
    Any help would be great.
I just do want to have to do a restore and get all of my daughters stuff on my mac.
    Thanks

Just set them both up, via #Q1 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Time Machine will make a separate +sparse bundle disk image+ for each Mac's backups.
As noted, it will be much faster to do the initial setup and first backup while connected via Ethernet, if at all possible. So your best bet will be to set up one, and let it's first backup complete, before setting-up the second.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

My new iPad with Retina Display is not able to connect to the Wi-Fi of my new Time Capsule. It use to connect, but now it just spins and spins and never connects. I've tried rebooting everything many times.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button
