My time capsule backups are not visible

From the Time Machine system preferences window, when I click "Select Disk" the Data partition of the Time Capsule is visible and I'm able to select it and enter my password. The countdown to the Next Backup begins. When it gets to zero, it spins out with "Looking for backup disk," and displays the attached message. Yikes! Am I doomed, or can I some how get to my backups?

I might mention, this all occurred after I ran a "Repair Disk Permissions" of my Macintosh HD. The process encountered no errors, but repaired a slew of Disk Permissions in the process. When Done, I was no longer able to access my Time Capsule backups.
That's interesting -- something had clearly gone wrong on your internal HD to mess up a lot of permissions.
(You might want to also reset the permissions on your home folder (Disk Utility only fixes permissions on system files and files installed by the OSX installer), per Resetting Password and/or User Permissions).
On the next backup, every file that had it's permissions repaired was treated as changed, and had to be backed-up again (Time Machine backs up the metadata, including permissions, as well as the data files).  What then went wrong is anybody's guess, but something dire happened, or you wouldn't have gotten that message.
Does this shed any new light on my case, or am I faced with only one option...erase the backup disk?
Most likely, you've had a network or power problem, per the link Bob supplied.
There is one other option -- "archive" the damaged sparse bundle to a USB drive connected to the TC, per the green box in #Q6 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.  You can probably view and restore from them, via the Browse... option, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17, but remember, they're damaged, so if you happen to hit a corrupted spot, anything may happen.
Then erase the TC's disk via Airport Utility, per the green box in #Q5 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule, (but in this case, you might want to select the Zero-Out Data option.  That will take longer than a quick erase, but if it fails, you'll know there's a problem with the TC's disk.  If it succeeds, the disk may be ok.

  • Mountain lion mac osx 10.8.3 time machine backups are not visible in time travel window. Why?

Time Machine shows that it's backing up every day.  It recognizes my selected backup drive. The backups appear in that external drive.
However today I opened the Time Travel Window and it says, No Backups Available.
    Whazzup?

Unmount and remount the drive. Same thing?

  • Time Capsule Backup Drive Not Recognized

I switched from a cable provider to Fios/Verizon.  My Apple Extreme/time capsule is connected to their modem/router with an ethernet connection, and works as a router to which I can connect with the Verizon network or the personal network previously set up on the time capsule.  The Time Capsule icon shows on the Airport Utility on my iPads and iPhones, but not on the Macbook's airport utility--just the "network" icon displays. So I have wireless connectivity on my devices, but I can't connect to the backup drive on the time capsule for my Macbook, so I can't back up my data.  I keep getting "an unexpected problem occurred" or "there was a problem connecting to the server "time capsule xxxxx".  I've restarted the time capsule, with a soft reboot and factory default reboot, but no luck.  Any suggestions/advice?

FIOS is a modem router.. the Time Capsule should be in bridge mode.. not router.
Please redo the setup.. this time choose bridge mode and I also recommend very short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    Eg.. Base station name. TCgen4
    Wireless name TCwifi
All passwords should also comply with that.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric but can be 8-20 characters and mixed case and numbers.
When you use Mavericks or Yosemite it has issues finding the TC.. especially if you are connected to the FIOS wireless.. so make sure you connect to the TCwifi and make sure you have IPv6 set to link-local only in the computer.
If the TC disk does not show in finder.. manually mount it.
In Mavericks I think it is better to use AFP.. so Go, Connect to Server.
    AFP://TCgen4.local
In Yosemite it seems SMB works better.
    SMB://TCgen4.local
What is more in Yosemite it has issues with network names no matter how short.. try using the TC IP address.
eg SMB://10.0.1.1 (replace with the IP address you will find in airport utility.. however also note it should be statically set and this can be a bit complicated)
Tell us how you go using the name first.. and what OS on the computer??

  • Time Capsule connected but not visible in Airport Utility

    Hi there,
My Time Capsule is visible in the finder windows as a drive, I am connected to it, and it is my link to Internet, it is visible from my wife's iMac in the next room, but it won't appear in the Airport utility (I can see only the two Air Port Extreme that are in other parts of the house for remote speakers).
All this is done within the same network as far as I know, so I don't see where the problem comes from.
In fact I want to access my TC configuration in order to get back the password needed for my wife to connect to it.

If you can temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, you should be able to see it in AirPort Utility.

Until you can resolve the AirPort Utility issue, you may be able to recover that password with the Keychain Access utility.

  • Time Capsule backup data not available

My Time Capsule had been attempting a backup for over 12 hours without any progress. I killed it, deleted the partial file, and started the backup cycle again. It has now been successful for 6 times since, but I cannot access any data prior to 3 Janurary 2009, 1:25 AM.
The 'tick' marks for each of the previous backup dates show along the right edge, but they begin to dim from the most recent to the earliest dates and then the data will not show for anything prior to yesterday.
Anybody have a clue what is going on???
I have used the Finder to view the files on the hard drive and there seems to be data in them for the various dates, but when using the Time Capsule interface, they will not show.

  • Time Capsule wireless network not visible.

I have a first gen TC which up to today was working great.
Today it was very, very slow on the wireless side but ok on the wired side.
I restarted the cable modem and the TC, after which everything looks okay - but the wireless network is not visible to any of my devices.
I have restarted it three times, reset it to factory and reconfigured it, switched the network settings to no security and other things but my iPhone, my iPad and my MacbookPro do not see the wireless network regardless of the security option or the networking type - N-only or B/G compatible.
As I say it was fine until I returned from vacation today.
    Any thoughts?

OK, so I have done this and it's made no difference. The new network Apple Network b73829 is still present alongside Wireless LAN.
I can only access Time Capsule if I switch to the new network, with the resulting loss of internet access from my Powerbook and, if I switch back to Wireless LAN I regain internet access but cannot see Time Capsule.
Although I just want to use Time Capsule to back up I have tried to connect it to my wireless LAN using the Join Existing Network on Airport Utility (even though I've been told I don't need to do this for Time Machine) but it has failed each time. After entering the password and wireless password information etc. and pressing update the Time Capsule device does re-start but there is ALWAYS an error message that says the device cannot be found and I should check that I am close to it (it's 3 feet away) or I should connect via Ethernet. If I connect via Ethernet it seems to disable the wireless functionality that I bought the device for.

  • Decompress time capsule backups

I want to use my time capsule as a basic hardrive with the ability to drag and drop and/or trash files freely but all backups are compressed, how can I decompress without having to double click to pen the disk image etc?

Time Machine backups are not compressed.
And you really should avoid using the Finder on them; if you accidentally move, change, or delete anything that way, you can corrupt them.
You can do anything you need to do via Time Machine. To view or restore from them, see #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you need to delete selected backups, or all backups of selected items, see #12 there.

  • Cannot find time capsule backup to restore

Hello - I have a MacMini (Intel Core 2 duo) runing OS 10.6.7.   I used Time Machine to backup my data daily to a remote Time Capsule on my local network;  I should also say at this point that I use Time Capsule to backup 4 machines in total.    The hard drive crashed, and needed to be replaced.   Now I am trying to restore my data to my computer.  However, neither migration assistant nor time capsule can find the correct image (sparsebundle) to be mounted - for example, when I "Choose Time Machine Disk to Browse" no disks show up. Migration Assistant behaved a little differently, showing me 2 (out of 4) Time Capsule backups, but not the one relevant for this particular computer.
I know that backups have been performed, and I can manualy mount the specific Time Machine Backup through the finder - at which point I can "see" folders named "yyyy-mm-dd-xxxxxx,"  just as interesting is a file "yyyy-mm-dd-xxxxxxx.inProgress" - and which appears to be the latest date at which the folder was accessed.  I have attached a screen shot of the contents of the folder.
Any thoughts?   I really just need to restore the most recent backup, the rest are not necessary past this point.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I just ran into the same problem, neither the Migration Assistant nor "Restore from Backup" from the 10.5 Install DVD would find a valid backup on my Time Capsule (which kinda renders it useless).
After some googling and trial and error I found a workaround using Terminal. I don't know why mounting the sparebundle image with Disk Utility wouldn't work, but it isn't available when your computer crashed anyway... So here is my method:
-Boot from the System DVD, choose the language
(-Goto Utilities and start the Disk Utility and reformat your drive, if on Intel check that you partition it with GUID, NOT Apple Partition Scheme NOR MBR, restart from DVD) only if something went wrong with your disk like in my case
    -Goto Utilities and start Terminal
-In Terminal first make a directory for the mount, type: mkdir /Volumes/MyBackup
-Then mount the Time Capsule and link it to the folder you created, type: mount -t afp afp://myuser:mypassword@IPAdressOfMyTimecapsule/VolumeWhereMyBackupIs /Volume/MyBackup
-The AFP-Volume is now mounted, but you can't see anywhere.
-Quit Terminal, this will bring you back to the 10.5 Installer.
-Goto Utilities and choose "Restore System From Backup"
-The Dialog will ask you for a Backup Source. You should now see your Time Capsule and an already mounted Time Machine Volume at the location you specified in Terminal.
-Select the Time Machine Volume and press Continue, it'll take a while you show you all the backups, choose the one you want, choose a destination, drink tea.

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

Since upgrading my Macbook to Lion, the time machine backups are failing - error message: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Jackie Scanlon's Time Caps/Jacqueline Drabczynska’s MacBook.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."  I have rebooted the TIme Capsule and it worked OK, but don't want to do that every time.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

    Any new info on this?
I had the exact same problem and went crazy and spent a hecka lot of time trying to deal with my brand new 2TB Time Capsule and almost brand new MacBook Pro.  Then I thought I fixed it...and I tried SO MANY things, I don't really know what did it...except taking out any apostrophe's in names of stuff that Apple puts in there...BUT...now it's back.
    Grrr...

  • New Macbook does not recognize Time Capsule backup from old macbook

I just purchased a late 2013 13" macbook pro. I have a mid 2009 macbook pro running Mavericks. The new macbook will not recognize the time capsule backup from my old macbook. I am trying to migrate all data over, but the new mac does not ever acknowledge the external drive that contains the backup. I've tried two different external drives with the same result each time. Both computers are running Mavericks.

Do you see the drive in Disk Utility?
If yes, run Repair Permissions then restart the drive.
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.
    2. Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions
    3. Click on the icon for your boot volume.
    4. Click the repair permissions button.
In System Preferences > Time Machine can you select the old Time Machine with Select Disk?

  • How do I restore notes from a time capsule backup in Yosemite?

All I want to do is restore previously deleted notes form a time capsule backup - something you could easily do in previous releases (I probably haven't tried this for a few years but it used to be really simple)

This procedure will revert the whole Notes database to a previous version. It's not possible to restore individual notes.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.apple.Notes" selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash, then restore it from a backup that predates the unwanted change. If you back up with Time Machine, enter it and select the snapshot from which you want to restore.
Log out or restart and empty the Trash.
If you synchronize Notes with iCloud or another network service, the notes you restored may be immediately deleted after you restore them. In that case, temporarily disconnect from the Internet, for example by turning off your broadband adapter, and restore again. Copy the contents of each note to a document in another application, such as TextEdit. Reconnect to the Internet. If the notes are deleted, recreate them from the TextEdit document. They should then synchronize to the network.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

My Time Capsule backups disappeared (blank black screens) and in trying to set it up again I now find that when TC is plugged in and on (green light) it cancels out wifi reception from my router. I am only using TC as a backup not for wifi. Can anybody help?

Sorry, you have lost me since it appears that you have two completely separate issues here.
All that I can suggest is you start over and try to set up the Time Capsule again first...and then, once that is done and the Time Capsule is working correctly on the network....then, try to troubleshoot the separate Time Machine issue.
If you decide that you want to do this, we'll need some basic information:
Make and model number of your modem?
You are using OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), correct?

Mail doesn't support notes. If you use iCloud, you have them in it because Notes is an application

Time Machine options are not working. I am unable to schedule automatic backups.  The On-Off button is grayed out. I can perform a backup manually.

Thanks for responding.  I have an external disk with plenty of room.  It is used only for backup of my computer.  I get a backup by clicking on the Time Machine icon at the top of the page and select "Back Up Now."  When I click on Time Machine Preferences, there is a box labeled "Options" which allows me to exclude items from backup and notify after old backups are deleted.  There is no option to schedule a backup.  The "OFF/ON" box is gray.  For "Next Backup:" it says "Automatic backups off."  I would like to turn it on.
