My time capsule cannot complete a backup

I have had my time capsule for almost 2 years, recently it has been unable to back up my files.  It continually reports that it is 'indexing.'  Is there a fix for this, other than a hammer?

  • HT1218 How do I troubleshoot this: Time Capsule cannot complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/ MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.

This is the second time I've encountered this issue with Time Capsule using Time Machine automatic backup. I haven't found the following specific error message in the list of troubleshooting issues: "Time Capsule cannot complete the backup. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."
I'm not certain what causes this issue. I think it may have something to do with having to force shutdown with apps still open when the beachball hangs and the MacBook has to be rebooted.
Has anyone else dealt with this issue?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Restart your Mac and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this should solve the problem.

  • Time Capsule cannot complete the backup, backup disk not available. Help please!

    Hi,
I've only ever been able to complete one back up using my time capsule and have been having problems for months! I've tried resetting and restarting the TC, it re-installs successfully and the green light comes onto the TC. However, when I try to backup I get the following message:
Time Capsule cannot complete the backup. The backup disk is not available.
I've tried taking it into the Apple store to the genius bar and they seem to think it is working fine. It seems to have connected successfully to my network at home so I'm struggling to work out what to do. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Have you updated to the latest Time capsule firmware?

My Time Machine cannot complete a backup.  The error message reads "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Brad Blocksidge's Time Caps/Macintosh.sparsebundle" is already in use.  Suggestions???

Most common error reported here.. absolutely stock standard what you expect with Mountain Lion.
Restart the TC will fix 98% of them..
Pull out the power cord.. count to 10.. plug in the power cord.
Check the info here for further info.

Time machine cannot complete my backup because 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder'.  How do I solve this problem?

Failed again this morning.  I checked my logs and one thing it showed was, "Error: (-50) Creating directory..."  I saw this...

    one thing you can try
Open system prefs and go to spotlight, in the privacy section add your Macintosh HD and any other drives you back up.  Give it a few seconds then remove your Macintosh HD and any other drives you added.  Close system preferences.  Watch the spotlight symbol on the top menu bar "looks like a magnifying glass".  It should have a dot in it as in is indexing all your drives again.  When the indexing is over (it can take a long time of your drive is big) now try to create a new backup with time machine...."
As usual, it's gonna take a couple days to see if it works.  I'll let y'all know...and y'all should try it also, and let us know.

  • HT201514 Time capsule cannot complete backup

    Hi,
I have a 1Tb Time Capsule connected to a network which backs up a 2008 Unibody MacBook. It was working fine until I installed Lion. Now 8 times out of ten it will not backup and I get the following message
I've tried all the usual, soft and hard resets and the network data to ensure all is well. Still getting the problem.
    All help gratefully received.
    Dave

There are multiple causes to the issue.. it is extremely common with Lion.. it does not unmount the drive correctly after a backup and so the next time it finds the drive is not available.. in the 5.6 utility people need to go to the disk area in airport utility and disconnect all users.
Alternatively a simple reboot of the TC will achieve the same thing.
Your problem is indeed noted as well.

  • TS1550 I keep getting the message that my sparsebundle is already in use and that Time Machine cannot complete the backup.  Any ideas?

I keep getting a message that says Time Machine could not complete the backup.  It says that my home wifi sparsebundle is already in use.  I do not know how to solve this problem.  Any ideas?

Disconnect the power from your backup device, wait two minutes, then reconnect the power. This usually solves the problem.
See The Backup disk image ... sparsebundle ... is already in use.

  • Time Machine cannot complete the backup.

Time Machine software is not "remembering" the exceptions I put into the settings in System Preferences, and is trying to backup the whole HDD to the Time Capsule (which doesn't have enough space). It's trying to stuff 421GB of stuff into 350GB of remaining space.
Once I delete and put in the exceptions (the size goes down to 175GB), and it can backup. But after that one time, it "forgets" the exceptions and the errors return.

That sounds like the preferences file may be corrupted. Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If that doesn't help, something may be corrupted in your installation of OSX. I'd suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.5 "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
If still no help, reinstall OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc (that won't affect anything else), then apply the "combo" again.

Time Machine cannot complete backup to MyBookLiveDuo
I am trying to use TimeMachine to setup a backup from a mid-2011 iMac running OSX 10.9.3 to a 4TB WD MyBook Live Duo drive on a network. I have 3 other MacBooks setup to use this shared drive using Time Machine as well as a PC using WD backup software.
The backup from the iMac is failing with a message “The backup disk image /Volumes/TimeMachine/PM’s iMac.sparsebundle could not be accessed (error(null)).”. After looking through Pondini I change the name of the iMac from "PM’s iMac" to "Family" but the problem is not fixed.

  • Error message: "Time Capsule cannot be found"

I tried accessing my Time Capsule drive from Finder. The TC shows up in the Finder window as a shared drive. However, when I try to open TC, I get an error message that says: "the operation cannot be completed because the original item for Time Capsule cannot be found." The wireless router is working and it shows that I am connected. As I was typing this, a scheduled backup was supposed to begin but the desktop icon that shows the backup in process that pops up when I'm backing up is not appearing.

I am having similar problem. My error: "Connection Failed: There was an error connecting to the server "NAME HERE.local". Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator".

    Things that I've tried:
    - Erase disk both with "quick" and "zero out" options.
    - Restore defaults
    - Roll back firmware to 7.4.1
    - changed time machine to use different disk, successful backup to that disk, set back to time capsule.
    - tried to add "Backup of HomeMac" and "TimeCapsule" to the spotlight privacy settings. These settings are lost at reboot.... and if I don't reboot it says that it fails to mount "Backup of HomeMac". Likely because it is already mounted?
    - I have 2 macs that backup to this time capsule. It has worked for several months. Now doesn't work for either. One is running 10.5.8.. the other is running 10.5.7.
    - Tried to use DiskUtility on the sparsebundle. It looks clean after a reboot, but then timemachine won't run... possibly because it is already mounted?? It looks corrupted in DiskUtility after I quit the time machine backup. In any case, I keep "erasing" the time capsule hard drive, so if there is a problem with the bundle, it is created from scratch and still has the problem.
    - verify permissions on my Mac's main HD.
    - changed the name of the TimeCapsule.
I think that is all. I get the same error every time. I don't know if this is a spotlight issue or a time capsule issue. It does affect 2 macs with different OS versions (10.5.7, 10.5.8), so I assume that it is the time capsule.
One other possibly unrelated issue: When I used to run time machine the backup volume would be mounted with my name. Now it just says the network name. (i.e. it used to say something like "Backup of John Smith's Mac" and now it says "Backup of HomeMac") I assume this is unrelated, but I figured I would mention that too.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

I think I have finally managed to get this working after 2 days of frustration. It won't be the answer for everyone because it involves opening up your Time Capsule, but this is what I did.
I noticed on this page (http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090806095905196) that people were having trouble with file permissions under 10.5.8. When I checked my Console logs during an attempted backup, I noticed chown "Operation not permitted" errors, so I began to suspect that Time Machine didn't have sufficient privileges to do the backup.
I couldn't find a way to run Disk Utility on the Time Capsule Disk, so I opened up the Time Capsule, removed the HD, put the HD into a USB enclosure and connected it to my Mac. When I ran Disk Utility "Verify" and "Repair" on the Time Capsule Disk partition, it returned the following:

    08/07/09 Friday, August 7, 2009 2:47:37 PM Disk Utility[202] Repair tool completed:
    -----8<------------------------------------
Following the repair, I opened Time Machine preferences, and set it to point to the Time Capsule Disk (which was still connected via the USB enclosure). The backup started working almost immediately. I cancelled the backup, put the HD back into the Time Capsule and rebooted everything.
After repointing Time Machine preferences back to the Time Capsule Disk (now safely back in the actual Time Capsule), I initiated a backup. The backup started working almost immediately (the most success I've had in 2 days) and has been backing up successfully for the past 1/2 hour. I won't be satisfied that I've solved the problem until it completes and I try a restore, but we'll see...
To be clear: this is a ridiculous "solution" to the problem. I must have formatted the Time Capsule Disk about 15 times using Airport Utility over the past 2 days, including an incredibly long "zero out" format. I have no idea why this wouldn't have correctly reset the disk with the correct settings. If anyone can figure out how to run Disk Utility on the drive without having to tear the Time Capsule apart, it would certainly be a much better solution.
    Cheers, Ben.

  • Can Time Capsule be used for Backup of Iphone

Can Airport Time Capsule be used for Backup of Iphone & ipad

The iPhone and iPad cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule.....they only back up to iTunes on your Mac or PC....or....to iCloud.
If you are using Time Machine to backup your Mac to the Time Capsule, then all of the backups of your iOS devices in iTunes will then be backed up to the Time Capsule.
See this Apple support document for more information on iOS backups.

  • How can I configure a second time Capsule just as a backup disc?

I bought the new 2nd Generation Time Capsule and want to backup the datas to my old Time Capsule. I connected it via USB cable A/A and got problems to configure it right. Can`t see it in the finder, to chosse it in my Intego Backup Manager Pro as the goal destiniation for the back ups. Does anybody have experience on this? Before I connected the Capsule as a net device and was able to backup the files from the new one, but not the backup Time machine file, from the Mac on which Intego Backup is running. The others did well.

You cannot use USB like this.. the TC is now and always a network drive.
So you bridge one TC and plug it by ethernet into the other one.
To copy backups you can follow these instructions for TM.
    Transfer TM backups..
    Apple doco. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5097
    Pondini doco http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
As for your other backups that is dependent on its format.. but should be simple copy and paste.

  • Time Capsule and operating system backup

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and the timecapsule for backups. My question is does the Time Capsule backup the operating system as well as files. I understood that it did but when I did my first backup it only took an hour. I have many songs and lots of photos on my hard drive.
I worry that it didn't complete the backup.
    Any thoughts or sugestions?

Yes. Time Machine, which is the software that the Time Capsule hardware uses, should backup everything.
