My time capsule is not backing up my macbook.  Password issue.  My other mac mini connected wirelessly works fine and backsup correctly.

My Time capsule is is backing up my Mac Mini just fine, however, my Macbook keeps asking me for the password and it does not like any of the passwords I use.  I have since used a pen to reset my Time Capsule and it reset all the network passwords for all 11 devices I had linked to it, however, it did not resolve the issue of my backup issue.  Ironically, the macbook still connects wirelessly with my macbook so I can surf the web with it, however, it does not backup on that same device because it must have a different password... Not sure what to do since my Mac Mini is backing up successfully.  I must have chosen a different password and it saved to that device, is there a way to display the Time Capsule password on my mac mini so I can attemp to use that on my macbook?

What is the current setting of the TC disk access? It has three main levels, device password, disk password and user names and passwords. If you have it set to the last you will need to create a new username and password for the MacBook or recover what you were using.
Have you ever done a backup to the TC via the MacBook?
What OS does it run?
The default password if you did not set anything is public.
Try manually mounting the TC disk on the MacBook and see if that allows TM to find it.
There is a lot of useful setup and troubleshooting info here.
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I would install the widget.. A1 and do a full reset of TM in the laptop, A4. As well as verify if you have already done a backup.. A5.
Basic setup of TC for TM is explained here.
http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Recovery of passwords is possible but should not be necessary.
See info here.

  • Time Capsule 2TB not backing up my MacBook Pro anymore

I'm having a bit of a problem with my Time Capsule.
I use this Time Capsule to backup my MacBook Pro only. So far it was working and backing up without a problem since September 1, 2010.
I didn't use my MacBook Pro on a daily basis as usual, just a few minutes just to check email and then power down, for two weeks, so no backup was taken and if during that time if I was using it and the backup started I cancel it.
Now three days ago, I decided it was time to let the backup finish as usual, but now I got an error message that my time machine disc wasn't available so the backup was delayed.
I tough that this was caused by a low connectivity or a WIFI interference, so I decided to take it and connect it directly to the Time Capsule via Ethernet.
I started a backup, but after a few MB copied, the backup seems to stall, nothing gets copied and I get the SBBOD. So I forced the control panel to close and started again, same result.
Rebooted the computer, try again, copied a little more and then stops, the blinking light stops and now the computer freezes.
I deactivated Time Machine, re activate same result.
Found some links on the net, try the suggestions, no luck.
So I decided to erase my Time Machine, and nothing changed, still stops sometimes after a few MB, other times after 1Go of Data, the max I got was 2,5Go, then the system freezes, I have to hard boot my mac.
I decided to try with an external HD connected to my MacBook Pro via FireWire 400 and it did a complete backup of my mac (100GB) without a problem and no frozen mac.
I tried again on the hard drive on the Time Capsule, and again the mac froze and I got just 2GO of data to be backed up.
This is not working either via Wi-Fi or Wired connection. The result is the same, frozen Mac after some data is backed up.
Before I erased the Time Machine drive, I mounted the .sparcebundle drive and did a repair and no error were detected.
Since my Time Capsule is no longer under warranty, I open it, and connected the drive to my Mac Pro via USB SATA adapter and started a drive diagnose with disk utility, an error were detected with the drive and I applied the repair. Formatted the drive and put it back into the Time Capsule.
Tried again to do a full backup of my MacBook Pro but same result, the computer froze, no backup was done.
I started a new backup of my Mac Pro into the Time Capsule and via Ethernet and so far still backing up (a lot of data 300GB and still going) without any problem or a hang or frozen computer. I decided not to stop this backup not to corrupt anything on my Mac Pro.
I don't know what to do, I know for sure that it is not the Time Capsule, it's something on the MacBook Pro but what? A bad configuration, somewhere on my MacBook Pro.
I'm new into Macs and my knowledge of debugging mac is very small. I don't know what to look for and where. And certainly I don't want to erase my MacBook Pro Hard Drive or clean install Snow Leopard.
Does anybody have a clue of what this may be.
What should I do to clean any reference on my MacBook Pro to this time capsule and start all over again? I don't know what to do.
    Thank you for your help.

I think I found the culprit!!! Yes I know it's basic to check, but once you're headed in a direction you forgot about all the rest. We're all humans after all.
But maybe my error will help other not to repeat or made the same mistake I did.
I deactivated Sophos Anti-Virus and I added my Time Capsule to the Exclusion List.
So far I passed the 2.5GB of data copied that always made my mac freeze.
Going to 13.50GB and still going, I'll check post an update if everything completes in a normal way.
Thanks to Jolly Giant and Pondini for their help.
    Check next post for updates.

  • I'm receiving an error message that reads "The backup disk image '/Volumes/Data/my name's iMAC.sparesebundle" is already in use.  The time capsule is not backing up any files.

I'm receiving this error message about my Time Capsule:
"The backup disk image '/Volumes/Data/my name's iMAC.sparesebundle" is already in use.  The time capsule is not backing up any files.

    1. Open the Sharing preference pane and check that the computer name hasn't changed without your knowledge. For example, if the name was "X's iMac," it might now be "X's iMac (2)". In that case, restore the original name. You may have to click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane to unlock the settings. Test. If there's no improvement, or if the name had not been changed, continue.
    2. If you're backing up to a Time Capsule, or an AirDisk attached to a 2013 or later model AirPort Extreme base station, restart it in either of the following ways:
☞ Disconnect and reconnect the power adapter.
☞ Select the device in the AirPort Utility application and then select
              Base Station ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
If AirPort Utility notifies you of a firmware update, install it.

  • Time Capsule will not back up address book

Fior some reason Time Capsule will not back up my address book. When I delete an address and start up Time Machine, it will show my address book screen. However all my "older" address book screens in time machine are blank. I have searched various forums but have not been able to find other topics on this issue. Is here anybody who has a clue (the address book is not exempted for back up)?

I just checked to see if TM was backing up my address book, and at first I saw the same thing you're describing, but after a minute or so, old backups appeared. Have you waited a minute to see what happens?

  • Time capsule will not back up any more

My Time Capsule will not back up anymore. I have a message stating there is not enough storage room. I have the setting to delete the oldest backup to make room for the newest backup. Any suggestions?

When you upgrade the OS, it produces massive backups. Mavericks in particular has produced all kinds of issues for people.
    You have several choices..
    1. If nothing in the backup is important to you.. erase the TC and start over. That is the easiest.
    2. If you want to keep the old backups then archive the existing sparsebundle to USB drive plugged into the TC.
Then erase the disk and start over. That is good way as once TM has established its routine.. and you are certain nothing in the old backups is needed you can wipe the USB.. after 6months or 1year or whatever.
    3. Plug the USB into the TC and use that as the target and start a new TM backup.
    4. Plug the USB into the computer and use that as the target for TM.
    5. Delete older backups in the sparsebundle yourself. I place this last, as it is the worst option IMHO.

  • Time capsule will not back up/sparse bundle is already in use?

Time capsule will not back up/sparse bundle is already in use?

Thank you.  After reading more, I turned off time capsule in system preferences, shut down computer, unpluged and pluged back in time capsule.  Turned computer back on and the problem went away and time capsule successfully backed up.
There is an old rule in boht PC and MAC world, try reboot first, ask later.  I often forget it.
    Thanks again.

  • New Time Capsule will not back up my 2009 MacBook Pro. I can see and find my last back before Mavericks but cannot backup.

New Time Capsule will not back up my 2009 MacBook Pro. I can see and find my last back before Mavericks but cannot backup. The TC will not allow me to delete or start a new backup disk. My 2024 MacBook Air did the same yesterday but today it backs up.

Seems to be working now. I left the MacBook on all morning trying to back up and now works.

  • Time capsule will not back up my iMac since I replaced the hard drive

I replaced the hard drive in my iMac, now time machine won't back up to time capsule because there is not enough space. I believe time machine/time capsule thinks the new hard drive is a new computer and therefore must perform a new complete backup even though the data on the new hard drive came directly off the old hard drive (the was backed up on time capsule. Our time capsule is currently backing up two computers (both Macs). How do I get time capsule to start backing up the new hard drive?

You'll have to be more specific -- that's like emailing an auto mechanic saying only "My car won't start."
    Has it ever worked?
Does your Mac recognize your Time Capsule?
    Do backups start?
If so, do they hang, or fail?  If they fail, with what message?
Start with Time Machine - Troubleshooting.   It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup, what you've done, and the results.

  • TS1550 My time capsule will not back up. There is a time machine error message that states "The backup disk image "/volumes/Backup/Jane's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use. How do I correct this problem?

My time machine will not back up. I get a Time Machine Error message that reads: "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Backup/(myname)'sMacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.
I have not been able to back up for two weeks, I think this occurred after an update to the operating system, but I am unsure.
How do I correct this problem?

Have you tried restarting the computer? Also, see Time Machine Error from this pages sidebar under More Like This.

  • I loaded in Lion - but my time capsule will not back up. I get an message: couldn't complete backup due to a network prolem. Also it says "make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network, and that the backup disk is turned on.

I installed Lion on my Mac Pro laptop. Regarding Time Capsul - I get a messaage as follows: couldn't complete backup due to a network problem. Make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network and that the  backup disk is turned on. Then try again to back up. I have time capsul turned on. bill

I have exactly same problem with my MBP and MBA, after upgrading to Lion. I've tried to fix this issue while cheking key chain issues and network setup, even formating hdd and time capsule firmware upgrade (ver. 7.6.1.). Nothing can help. It is very annoying.

  • HT3275 I'm receiving an error message that reads "The backup disk image '/Volumes/Data/my name's iMAC.sparesebundle" is already in use.  The time capsule is not backing up any files.

The Time Machine is not completing thte backup to my Time Capsule.  I am receiving a message which reads "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Mac Jet's iMAC.sparsebundle" is already in use."  I cannot locate the source of the problem or what steps need to be taken to get the Time Capsule operating.

Hi, see if it shows here...
In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • Will my mac mini connect to a display and a projector at the same time.

I want to be able to use my LCD display while at the same time use a projector for slide presentations. Is there some adapter that will run off of the USB connector and connect to the projector cable (15 pin connector)? Thank you for suggestions.

Yes.  Check http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go They have several solutions, one of which may work with your machine.

  • Time Capsule Will Not Connect to the Internet

I would appreciate any help or suggestions with my Time Capsule problem. We have a 1TB Time Capsule, in all of 2010 it worked great. We had 2 Mac Books backing-up to it daily, never had a problem. We purchased an iMac this month and I migrated the setting from one of the Mac Books onto the iMac, no problems. However, now the Time Capsule will not back-up either the iMac or the other Mac Book. The Mac Book that I migrated all the information from hasn't been turned on since the migration. Yesterday, the Time Capsule no longer allow us to connect to the internet. I contacted my ISP to ensure internet service was active and plugged the exisiting Mac Book (we still use) into the cable modem and was able to use the internet. This morning the TC wouldn't allow audio streaming to an ATV. Any ideas on what to do to correct the problem?

I'm good with erasing all former back-ups on the Time Capsule and starting fresh with the iMac. Please tell me how.
o Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    o Click the Disks icon
o Click the Disks tab just below the Disks icon
o Click the Erase button in the center of the window
The Quick Erase option will be fine for your purposes. This will only take a moment or two.
When you are ready to backup the iMac,
o Connect it to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule using an ethernet cable
o Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    o Open Time Machine
    o Click Select Disk
o Click on your Time Capsule to highlight it
    o Click Use for Backup
The backup will begin in a few minutes. Allow a long time for the backup. A good time to start this is late at night so you can let the backup run overnight.
