My time capsule is not connnecting to the internet

My modem stopped working and I have a new one, now my time capsule /private network from it is not connecting to the internet
Any ideas?

When you replace a modem you have replaced the KEY part of the network.. the Airport /TC needs a factory reset to work again.
No files are lost doing this..
I have added some notes particularly for Mavericks/Yosemite as a new clean setup is also good time to fix network issues with names etc. Particularly for Yosemite this is important.
A factory reset of the TC is the start.. it is required so you can find it again.
Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
There is more if you need it.. This thread is help.. read from bottom last post up.

  • Time Capsule Will Not Connect to the Internet

I would appreciate any help or suggestions with my Time Capsule problem. We have a 1TB Time Capsule, in all of 2010 it worked great. We had 2 Mac Books backing-up to it daily, never had a problem. We purchased an iMac this month and I migrated the setting from one of the Mac Books onto the iMac, no problems. However, now the Time Capsule will not back-up either the iMac or the other Mac Book. The Mac Book that I migrated all the information from hasn't been turned on since the migration. Yesterday, the Time Capsule no longer allow us to connect to the internet. I contacted my ISP to ensure internet service was active and plugged the exisiting Mac Book (we still use) into the cable modem and was able to use the internet. This morning the TC wouldn't allow audio streaming to an ATV. Any ideas on what to do to correct the problem?

I'm good with erasing all former back-ups on the Time Capsule and starting fresh with the iMac. Please tell me how.
o Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    o Click the Disks icon
o Click the Disks tab just below the Disks icon
o Click the Erase button in the center of the window
The Quick Erase option will be fine for your purposes. This will only take a moment or two.
When you are ready to backup the iMac,
o Connect it to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule using an ethernet cable
o Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    o Open Time Machine
    o Click Select Disk
o Click on your Time Capsule to highlight it
    o Click Use for Backup
The backup will begin in a few minutes. Allow a long time for the backup. A good time to start this is late at night so you can let the backup run overnight.

  • My time capsule will not connect to the internet.

Please help.  Just purchased a brand new 2T airport time capsule for my MacBook Pro and my other apple devices.  I have the ethernet cable plugged into the TC and into my Westell modem, in the correct jacks.  There is a green light on the connection spot for the WAN port.  The network appears in my network list, then I go to set it up and it tells me I have an error and a red 1 next to the network after it updated the software and tried to set itself up.
When I click on the red 1 it comes up with an amber mark next to set up over WAN.  I have no clue what to do to fix the problem.  I am providing a screenshot to show what I am seeing.
Any and all help is welcome.
I can connect to the internet through my old network on my modem, but not through the Airport TC.
    Thanks

Factory reset the TC and start again.
Your name is not valid.. it is over the number of characters allowed.. although the stupid airport utility won't stop you.
Use names for the TC and wireless that are short, 2-20 characters, no spaces and no apostrophe.. pure alphanumeric.
When you say it is plugged in with correct jacks.. does that mean WAN port on the TC to LAN port on the router??
The TC should also be in bridge mode.. so when you redo the setup.. make sure you have off bridged mode for the network.. but you create a wireless network with the new name or same name as the existing wireless network.

  • Time capsule does not appear in the finder.

My time capsule appears in airport utility. It is ready to go. I have it on ethernet because airport isn't a very powerful wireless router. The time capsule does not appear in the finder. It does not appear in the disc utility. It does not appear in time machine. The airport utility will do factory resets, get it ready for internet, whatever. The rest of my net work can not see it.
I have done the finder preferences. I have restarted the computer, jiggered the sharing preferences, done factory resets, tried to find sparce bundles and sparse bundles, reset the finder, force quit finder, tried to find finder plsts, trawled the discussion pages, tried to find server addresses and apple ids. Nothing seems to work.
Time capsule never seems to work as smoothly as it supposed to. I shudder to present my problems to apple support because I know that its a long road and will probably end in tears. But here I am, naked before this disappointing edifice.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

What is the make and model number of your modem?
I have a microwave modem on my roof. I don't think that has anything to do with this. I am not using my airport for a wireless router, only as a time capsule connected by ethernet. The Airport Utility calls my airport : Airport Extreme 802.11 ( 1st Generation )
Is the Time Capsule acting as your main router or is another device handling those services?
No, I have a lyncsis router. The wireless router function on airports doesn't seem to work very well. I don't think thats a problem with mine. My brothers have gone with lyncsis as well.
Was the Time Capsule visible in the Finder before, and is now "lost", or has it never appeared in the Finder?
It appeared on my previous laptop. That died. Now I have an imac. The airport has never appeared on the imac.
Thanks for trying to help so quickly

  • I do not own neither a Mac nor an iOS devices. May I still be able to use all features of Time Capsule, including remote access over the internet?

    As described above.
I do not own neither a Mac nor an iOS devices. May I still be able to use all features of Time Capsule, including remote access over the internet?

You will have setup issues.. as the latest AC model requires a Mac or iOS device.. eventually apple will release a windows version of the utility.. and the current one does partly work but Apple seem in no hurry.
You can find a Mac or iPad equipped friend to do the setup.. once setup the Windows computer can use it.
BUTT you cannot access it from remote..
Not with windows. You need BTMM and iCloud account. AFAIK even with those you cannot reach the TC.
You can do it manually.. using a vpn. Buy a proper vpn router and use a vpn client on the windows computer.. the TC would be in bridge to the network..
Apple really did not make this for windows.. and SMB access is only provided on LAN access not WAN.

  • My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link  EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
    However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
    Thanks again

  • Can you access time capsule from a mac over the internet

Can you access time capsule from a mac over the internet?

Yes. See this thread about how to access the disk attached to a Time Capsule.  Access to the Time Capsule itself can be done similarly.

  • Can I connect to my Time Capsule from any where via the internet ?

I want to be able to connect to my Time Capsule when I'm on the road. How can I do so?

Do a google for remote time capsule connection.
Yes, it is very easy using a Mac if you have static public IP and the TC is the main router.
It can be done via iCloud and BTMM.. again just look it up.
It is very very hard to do it without iCloud Lion and latest TC firmware or static IP.
It should be accessed by AFP.. means no windows machines.
It should be considered carefully as there are some risks.. passwords my not be exchanged encrypted..
The right way is vpn using a vpn router and TC in bridge.

  • Time Capsule can't connect to the internet

    Hi,
I've looked around these forums and can't seem to find a solution to my (quite specific) problem. I'll try to be as clear as I can - I'm not bad on computers, but network stuff goes way over my head.
I've just moved to Moscow, bringing my TC with me. When I arrived, the landlord had set up broadband for me, with a Motorola SB5101E Surfboard Cable Modem. I plugged the modem into my Macbook via Ethernet (no TC involved yet) and I got on the internet straight away.
Later, though, I tried to hook the modem up to my TC to get wi-fi. I plugged the Ethernet cable into the WAN port on the back.
Straight away, I had no internet access. I did a hard reset (pen on the small button on the back of the TC) and used Airport Utility to set the TC up again. Before it completed, I got the message:
'Your Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP address'.
I hadn't played around with any of the settings, using it purely to create a new wireless network. It was all set to DHCP, automatic everything.
IP address currently starts with 169.
I've tried powering down both modem and TC, for up to 12 hours at one point. I've also tried reconnecting them in various orders - ie modem first, then TC, and vice versa.
None of this is made any easier by the fact that I have no idea who my ISP is or any of that info as I have no Russian yet and my landlord doesn't speak any English.
So... is there anything anyone can suggest? I'm sorry that I can't give any more info than I have.
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the discussions!
Cable modems need a complete reset whenever the device that is directly connected to them is changed.
Power down the modem and pull the battery if it has one. Wait at least 30 minutes. (It may take your service much longer to reset).
Power down the rest of your system as well. When you are ready, power up the modem and let it run for 10-15 minutes. Then, power up the Time Capsule and let it run for 5-10 minutes and finally your computers.
If your modem has a single ethernet port, then Connection Sharing for your Time Capsule should be set to "Share a single IP address".
If you have a combination modem/router (it will have 3-4 ethernet ports), the correct setting as noted below for Connection Sharing would be "Off (Bridge Mode)"

  • Time Capsule won't connect to the internet

I just bought a Time Capsule and was told that I simply had to connect it to my modem and it would "self connect". However when I tried this, the amber light kept flashing for 40 minutes before I gave up. What am I doing wrong?

There is no reason for the TC to not hand out IP addresses unless you have it in the wrong mode..
    Please do a factory reset.
    Power off the TC..
Hold in the reset button, and apply power with your third arm..
Keep holding in reset the whole time.. and wait for about 10sec after power on for the TC Led to flash rapidly.
Release the reset and wait for the TC to restart.
Does the ethernet port on the TC and on the computer turn on their connectivity LEDS.. tiny LED on the port of the TC. Usually similar on the computer. If not the cable is no good.. get another one.
If the connectivity LED has come one, check the IP address again.
Regardless of all this it still should have worked on the ipad. After the reset search and connect to a wireless signal that says time capsule.

  • Time Capsule - how to gain "over-the-internet" access from Windows 7!

    Hi guys,
I've been fighting for such a long time with my Time Capsule. I have no idea how to gain access "over-the-internet" on a PC (Windows 7) which is running on  another network. My Time Capsule is set up with my Macbook Pro at home running Lion OSX, and i have internet connection. My brother who also uses Macbook has no problems connecting to my Time Capsule - through finder (connect to a server). But how do I gain "over-the-internet" access to my Time Capsule through a PC (Windows 7) from my office? Is there please someone who can guide me step-by-step, how to gain connection to my TC through a PC? Or maybe just an explantaion what has to be done on the PC before this thing can work out! This was the main reason to why i bought Time Capsule - besides of the Time Machine function. I also have an iCloud account (earlier Mobile Me), if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!

There is no way to do it from windows direct to the TC.
It only presents AFP to the WAN side. And most ISP block SMB from internet access due to risks. There is AFAIK, no suitable AFP protocol utility for windows at the moment. If you google and find one, be aware it probably will not work to your satisfaction anyway.
You must use a Mac to access AFP but even then it is not a secure protocol and I would recommend against it anyway.
So basically if you had have asked before purchasing, I would have said, TC is unsuitable product. It is a backup drive for a Mac. It is not a NAS.. it is not designed for remote access by any computer other than a Mac. It does not support any other file protocol to the WAN interface.. and no secure protocol even there.
A NAS with Time Machine extensions from QNAP, Synology, Netgear all are designed for web access and are far more suitable. Researching a purchase beforehand is always worthwhile.
Anyway, your choices are.. return the TC and buy something more suited to the job.
Or if return is now impossible sell the TC on ebay.. etc and do the same thing.. buy a more suitable NAS.
Or buy a cheap mac mini (even second hand) and use that for communications with home.
Or, replace your current router with something that includes vpn. This is actually a good and commercially sound decision. VPN is generally used by business to connect to remote locations, because it is secure and will allow the greatest flexibility of connection. How hard or easy depends on the current setup. I would recommend a combined modem router with vpn server if you have adsl. Or for cable you can find plenty of routers with combined vpn. You can also use those for adsl if your ISP allows pppoe with bridged modem. The TC will have to be bridged as well. For other broadband it might be harder to find the right kind of box.
Once you setup a vpn you can access it from work using the appropiate vpn client in your work computer.

  • What to do with Time Capsule when not using for Wireless Internet

I previously connected my Time Capsule to my fiber optic router but in my no home this is no longer needed as the cable TV company now provides 160 MPS Internet in a router that contains a wireless router built in. It works fine.  My computer is now connected wirelessly to that router (too far to take advantage of the wired connection).
Therefore I want my Time Capsule to just be connected to the computer for backups.  I gather I have to connect it via Lan and make sure it does not transmit r receuve wirelessly. In fact, other wireless computers in the huse occasionally try to log into the old Time Capsule PPoE settings, so I want to erase them and start fresh.
This seems to be similar to what I want t do, but I want to make sure and ask:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/8256674#8256674
If this is not correct, can someone advise.
By the way, I have a first generation Aiport Express that I hope to use with my new cable router (modem?).  I assume it will work as it did with the Time Capsule. Purpose is for Airplay with an audio system.
    Thanks!

Thank you for your replies. I really appreciate it.
To answer your questions in order, but first I should mention that due to work reasons, I will be away from my computer until Friday night Japan time, or Friday AM US time.
Anyway, probably better I go slowly,as I tend to get overwhelmed by technical things.
    1) You said:  "The TC does NOT require an Internet connection for network connectivity. You DO have to connect the TC by Ethernet to the Fiber Optic router in order for it to gain network connectivity AND to allow network clients to access it."
-->Ok, this is in reference to my Time Capsule and the previous network n myold apartment.  But your next question makes me wonder:
    2) "Is this Motorola device the one that replaced the Fiber Optic router that you mentioned in your original post? What is its model number? Do you have the TC connected directly to it by Ethernet?"
Ok, this is what I have:
Wall--> Cable modem with wireless (Motorola SURFboard SBG6580J Wireless Cable Modem Gateway.)
Other Room  IMAC connected wirelessly to Cable Modem (no Ethenet connection to it since there is no jack and too far to run a cable (permanently--I can do for setup if needed)---> connected to TC and Time Capsule is backing up ok. Time Capsule is also not connected to the Modem
    3) "Since you will only want to use the Time Capsule for Time Machine backups, I understood that you wanted to disable its wireless network. If this is still the case, the Express would need to be configured to join the wireless network provided by the Motorola wireless router."
Yes, This is what I am wondering. Do I have to connect it by LAN to the Motorola?  A few times, when it was just plugged into the Wall, my Mac airport utility found but them could not connect to my Express. maybe because I did not configure it to work with the Motorola as you say.
    4)
"By default the Express will broadcast its own wireless network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. You would need to connect to this network with your computer prior to attempting to access it with the AirPort Utility. Another option would be to temporarily connect it, by Ethernet, to the Motorola router during its setup phase. Once completed you can move it to the desired location."
Ok, this confirms what I guessed.  Connecting the computer to the Expressby Lan?  Is that what you mean?
I do understand the second option---connecting the Express to the Motorola.
If that is right, I can try that.  Do I need to do anything other than connect it?
I will be able to try this Friday or Saturday I hope.
Once again. thanks for all your help. Really appreciate your taking the time to explain it.

  • I have a Time capsule with 2 laptops using the internet wireless from it.

My desktop is wired to the Time capsule and it allows me to access the internet but my laptops cannot access the internet.  I have reconnected everything but nothing seems to work.  Any suggestions?

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.
