My time capsule is stuck on "indexing."

My time capsule wireless updates won't get past "indexing."  It's never done this before and I've had it for a long time.  It won't finish the backup or indexing.  It will prepare the items then sit on indexing for hours.  I've even left it over night and it was still stuck.  I tried reseting the time capsule and it didn't work.  I also installed the newest software update and it didn't help.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I finallyl gave up and paid Apple Support to help. They found a conflict in my running Symantec Anti-virus. Once I shut it down, my backups began working. Its a shame I have to turn off software that protects my Mac, so that I can back up my Mac for protection.

What are you backing-up to? If you can see the +sparse bundle+ your backups are in via the Finder, use the instructions in #A5 for repairing the backups on a Time Capsule. If you can't see it, you can't repair them with DIsk Utility (or most 3rd-party disk repair apps). Check with the maker of the NAS for help.
Further, i thought it would be something with the message "Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD"
That's normal after a failed/cancelled backup, and will be repeated each time until one completes successfully. See #A6 in Troubleshooting for details.
Besides, my spotlight is now indexing my harddisk and seems to get stuck on "calculating time for indexing"
This is because i excluded my harddisk from spotlight, restarted my mac and then included my harddisk again for spotlight. So it needed to reindex it, but i'm not sure that it will work, because it allready toke the whole day for it and is still saying the same thing..
That sounds like a problem with a file or the directory structure on your internal HD. Did you verify your internal HD, per #3 in the green box? If so, and if it says it's ok, exclude your internal HD from Spotlight indexing until you get your backups working; then you can figure out what's wrong with Spotlight.

  • Time Machine backup to Time Capsule gets stuck

    Hi all,
I'm backing up my MBP via ethernet to a Time Capsule. The incremental backups take forever and are driving me nuts. The backups seem to be getting stuck midway. The disk sounds like it's spinning but the progress bar doesn't move. Also, it seems to be copying over too many files every hour, like >60000 or so (log below). I doubt that so many files get modified every hour.
I've tried everything (I could think of and find on the discussion boards) like deleting the sparsebundle, deleting the entire backup drive, playing with the backup frequency, nothing works.
    Please help!!

  • Why is my Time Capsule always stuck at "preparing"?

My Time Capsule has been stuck for a long time now. It used to work, but a few months ago it stopped. Whenever I try to backup, it just sits there. The Internet works fine. Any suggestions?

Can you access the TC using airport utility?
    Have you reset TM?
    http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html
Have you loaded the widget to find the actual error?
    http://pondini.org/TM/A1.html
    Did you verify the disks?
    http://pondini.org/TM/A5.html
As far as I can see you did a reset.. that is not sufficient in your case.. you need to dig deeper.
    Welcome to Lion.. !!
    Edit :
Specific pointers here as to why.

  • Time Capsule gets stuck at "Preparing Backup..." every time.

This has been happening for about two months now. I was sure 10.5.5 would fix the problem, but it still occurs. My Time Capsule seems to not work any more - it gets stuck "Preparing Backup..." permanently. I have left it running for two days straight and it makes no visible progress. Any ideas? I don't even know where to start.

    Jeffrey,
Consider these factors regarding an extended period of "Preparing...":
*Recent Crash or Other Major System Event* (Deep Traversal)
The reasons for this process are described in an article by George Schreyer. “During the preparation step it checks the FSEvents log for consistency. If it determines that something isn't quite right it has to rescan the whole disk. This can take quite awhile. A full rescan is always triggered by a crash, an unplanned shut down event or by booting from some other bootable disk between backups…. After a crash, Time Machine must scan the whole disk to determine what it has to do because it cannot trust the information that it left behind. Connected via an Ethernet connection, this phase would typically take 20 minutes on an older PowerBook. Being connected wirelessly stretches this phase out to over 3 hours.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
According to the following KB article it can sometimes take a very long time if Time Machine begins this “deep traversal” and has to compare data inventories. This may apply to your situation, particularly if many Gigs of data are involved. (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516)
    *Software Updates*
Installing new software, upgrading existing software, or updating Mac OS X system software can created major changes in the structure of your directories. Time Machine will backup every file that has changed since the installation.
    *Anti-Virus Software*
Running anti-virus software can interfere with the backup process. Either disable it altogether, or try the suggestion outlined here, “If you use third-party anti-virus scanning software and have issues, make sure your Time Machine back up folder (Backups.backupdb on the Time Machine disk) is excluded from virus scanning.” (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516)
    *Stalled .inProgress Files:*
It may be that the previous backup attempt was ungracefully interrupted leaving remains that Time Machine can’t deal with.
    Open your Time Machine drive.
    Open the folder labeled “Backups,backupdb”.
Now open the folder containing backups of the computer in question.
Are there any “.inProgress” files there. Delete them.
    (For Time Capsule Users)
Select the TC in the SideBar of the Finder window.
Click "Connect as...". Enter your TCs password.
Double click the blue folder that appears in the finder window. The sparsebundle should now be visible.
Double click the sparsebundle and then click “Skip” in the checksum message.
Once “Backup of (Users Computer)” mounts in the Sidebar, click on it and open the “.backupdb” folder. Now open the folder containing backups of the computer in question.
Are there any “.inProgress” files there. Delete them.
Unmount the sparsebundle, then unmount the TC, and try backing up again.
Let us know if any of the suggestions above helped.

  • Initial Time Machine Backup Stuck on "Indexing Backup"

I have Mac Mini running 10.7.2.  I just got an external hard drive and am trying to run an initial back up using Time Machine.  I am running my computer in Safe Mode as it won't start in regular mode.  I formatted the HD and began to run Time Machine back up.  HD is connected via USB 2.0 wire.
It has now been 12 hours and is still on Indexing Backup...  Is this normal for initial back up?  I know it takes a long time for initial but this doesn't seem right. What do I do to correct if it isn't correct?  Should I stop and try again?

Thank you very much.  With your info I gave up on the back up and ran Disk and Permission Repair for the 3rd or 4th time and crossed my fingers and restarted my machine and it WORKED!  I ran time Machine back up and when I woke up this morning it was all done!  Yeahhhh!
I wasn't sure what was causing it not to start in regular mode and as I'm not too much of a techie I was scared that I was teetetering on the brink of losing everything.  The machine would run so I didn't think it was a hard drive issue, but not knowing for sure I was concerned and after losing everythign once before years ago, I was worried. I have it backed up on line but wanted a 2nd (local) version that wouldn't entail tying up bandwidth for days.  In the end it worked out!
But the short answer is, Time Machine Backup does NOT work in Safe Mode...

  • Time Capsule is stuck at "finishing backup",

I have been backing up wirelessly for roughly around 18 hours for about 30 gb worth of data. However, the backup does not finish but just stays stuck at "finishing backup". I've waited around 24 hours and the backup still says "finishing backup". So i click stop backing up. However, when i check my latest backup in time machine, it seems that the backup has completed. I try backing up again and its still stuck at "finishing backup", but when i click stop backup, the backup seems to be completed. My questions is why is this happening. Why does time machine say that is finishing backup when it has actually finished.

Tribalz1, After reading more through the forum, it seems many problems have been caused by the Airport Utility 7.4.2, and many of them being solved by downgrading to 7.4.1. That pretty much coincides with the time frame when my TC started acting up and not finishing the backup.
I downgraded to 7.4.1 and it seemed to solve the problem for now. My first backup after changing, it DID stay on "finishing" for what seems to be longer than it should, but I left it alone, came back later, and it had finished. The next backup it did, it completed it just like it should.
Its a simple non destructive fix, so I suggest you try it and see if it works as well for you, as it did for me.

Use ethernet.. and if you don't get anywhere, I would delete the backups and start over.. something strange is happening in UUID don't match. You have replaced the disk or something at some point.

  • My Time Capsule is stuck "preparing".

I installed a new Hard Drive in my Macbook Pro and I sense it has something to do with this.  Anybody know how to fix?

Your suspicion is correct.  See #D1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

  • Time machine taking too long (indexing)

I run my time capsule to back up both of my computers
a Imac 2GHz intel core duo running 10.6.8  and
an Imac 3.4GHz intel core i7 running 10.7.4
both are connected wirelessly to the Time Capsule
Recently, on the older machine, backups have stalled. I can work on it for a while, doing disk repairs and disk permissions with the Snow Leopard installation disk utility and 'fix' it for multiple backups - and all is well.  Then it stalls on 'indexing backup' again.  Meanwhile, the new machine running Lion is just fine.  I just noticed it again.
Last successful backup was 0517 this morning (EST) and this was at approx 1700 (5 evening).  I sat at the computer and was working away when Snow Leopard became really slow and I noted that the Time Capsule was indicating indexing backup, I let it run for 45 minutes and it was still indexing backup, so I quite Time Machine and restarted at 1845 (645 evening).  The restart of Time Machine allows Snow Leopard to regain its usual speed, Time machine reported a file count of 202 files that had changed and went to 'indexing backup'  a half hour later it is still at 'indexing backup'  (about 9 emails were received - how that relates to 202 files I am not sure)
Why does it work multiple times just fine and then all of a sudden stall?  When it does stall it simply (over time I presume) eats up all available memory (1.5 gb)  with page swaps each one getting bigger and bigger until all memory is gone.  I can 'free memory' and recover to about 600 free (running email and browser app in the background) but the time machine does it all over again if I allow it to run.
As I said, I have used Disk Utility (with the Snow Leopard Installation disk to allow repair of the boot volume) and have repaired the disk and repaired permissions - several times. (some disk permissions are repaired - no disk repairs reported)  After each time, I go back and restart Time Machine and 'poof' within an hour it performs a backup with no problems.  I note that backups are performed on schedule for the next few days with no problems, and then bingo, the system is totally bogged down again, and Time Machine is stuck on indexing backup once again.   I have not noticed any commonality as to when the problem occurs - sometimes after a day, sometimes after several days.  And meanwhile, the Lion machine is performing flawlessly
At the moment my kludge to work around is to turn off Time Machine so as not to use up all the memory and then periodically use the installation disk routine to 'repair'  (disk and permissions) and then backup, but this is NOT solving the problem long term of course.
The first time I noticed this (about two months ago) the disk repair did note a disk error the system was claiming 2 bytes less free space than there was, but after that time, all the disk repairs report fine.

Indexing can take a long time over wireless. You would do much better with ethernet connection.
Maybe the hard drive is failing.. The fact that the disk passes tests does not mean it is ok. As a disk ages it can have issues reading, where the same sector has to read multiple times.
I guess the ideal would be replace the machine.. it is several years old and really due for replacement.
Or at least the hard disk... although the cost of doing that job might not be worth it.
As a test I would do a backup using TM to a USB local disk plugged into it... that is good practice anyway when you are getting poor reliability on backups.
You can create a disk image using a other tools.. CCC or superduper.
A clone of the existing drive again can be worth it.
You can set to boot from FW drive and ignore the internal.. see if the problems go away.
Pondini is usually helpful although he doesn't have specific on this indexing issue.

  • Time capsule putting files back in trash

I have been having problems with the time capsule getting stuck on preparing back up. I managed to trash the partial backup and get it working again. Now every time it does a back up the trash fills with back up files and then empty's again when the back up is finished. Never had this before. Any ideas what's going on.
    Thanks,
    Allen.

Here is the update:  The backups are there, it is just that the Favorites folder links are broken in Time Capsule.  I'm not sure why this is happening and how to relink those favorite folders to actually work when using them in Time Capsule mode.

  • Time Capsule and Spotlight

Hello, I have question about Time Capsule's Spotlight searching. The problem is that Spotlight doesn't want to find anything on my Time Capsule. Interesting, 'cause indexing works but after it happened nothing. Any idea?

A normal search will not show up material in a TM backup.. you must be using TM to search for info and apparently Spotlight is necessary to that working.
See some of the posts under "More Like This" on the right column.

A bit old but still probably correct. Most of what Pondini says is gospel.

  • Time Capsule will not reset

I'm trying to delete old user devices from my access control list, but after I remove them, the Time Capsule will not reset properly.  After I delete one of the devices, click on Update, the time capsule gets stuck during the update and never fully resets.  If I pull the plug and restart the time capsule, it reverts back to it's previous state with the devices still in the access list.  Is anyone having this trouble?

    Dear Stephen,
I have the same problem and I found this thread describing the same thing on another forum. Each time I try to change any setting this happens (i.e., TC won't reset and I have to unplug it before I can use it again).
When the postings in the mentioned thread are any indication no reset (hard or soft) will have any lasting effect. But of course, I will try to reconfigure and see what happens.
Any solution or localization of where the source of the problem (firm-/soft-/ or hardware) would be highly appreciated:)
    Best
    Rene

  • Time capsule problem  please help

Hi People its my first post i hope its in the right section.
    Ok
I have a NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N DSL Gateway DGND3300 Wireless route.
i was told i can extend the range with apple time capsule.
i tried to set up time capsule this morning my steps were
    airport un
found apple time capsule join wireless network all setup
i then went to update the settings and i got message saying update complete waiting for restart
the time capsule was stuck on amber flashing on and off and would not pick up any signal
i have now set it up plugged into router but it don't boost my signal
Does anyone know if i can set it up using wireless mode which will work and boost my signal
at the mo it feels like a waste of money
    please help

also at the moment i have plugged tc into netgear and created a new network.
    is that the best way,
If you configure the Time Capsule as a "bridge" to use exactly the same wireless network name, security and password as the wireless on your main router, you will in effect, extend the wireless network that way. Computers will be able to move from one area to another without having to change networks.
I assume that you have an ethernet cable connecting your main router to the WAN port (circle icon) on the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your main router network
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting that your main router is using. You may need to check the configuration pages for your main router to get this information. If the settings do not match exactly, the wireless network will not perform as a single network, it will perform as two separate networks
Wireless Password = Same password as your main router
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save settings.

  • Time Capsule Indexing Backup & stuck at 6KB

I have had a time capsule for almost 2 months, and it worked great for the first six weeks, but two weeks ago, it stopped backing up. I can still access the hard drive with my mac and windows machines in my office, but my Mac Book Pro won't finish a backup. I have tried connecting wired and wireless to no avail. Any help would be great.

If TM is stuck at the preparing stage, it's quite possible TM has found a corruption in TC and is trying to scan the whole backup image and trying to repair it.
However, scanning the whole disk over a wireless network is excruciatingly slow. The best way is to use Ethernet LAN cable and do the repair over wired network. And then sit back and relax for a few hours, TM should then be able to complete the repair.
