My time capsule just died!

My time capsule just died, and I can't find a way to power it back on again. I know it's not the power source, since I tried other plugs. I've had it for about 2 years. Any idea what's going on/what I should do?

I called them this morning. Admits my allergies and sneezing I was able to talk to them.
They will replace it with basically no questions asked.
I guess also having a MBP under AppleCare also helped too as the case is registered under that.
They gave me a few options.
The could take my credit card number as insurance and send me a new one and them I send them my dead one back, or I could take it into an Apple Store for a replacement there. The problem is that I have data on there that I want to maintain, so they said take it to the Apple Store or an Apple Service provider and they would handle the transfer.
I have a Service Provider that I know that could do the transfer for me, but that might take more time than if I go to the Apple Store when we go on holidays.
So I need to weigh my options.
I’ll let you know further what happens.
P.S. my serial number was not in the range listed, but that didn’t seem to make a difference. I think the key is to be courteous and friendly.

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

  • How do I set up my new Time Capsule just to back up not as a wireless?

Can anyone tell me how to use my new Time Capsule just for back up not as a wireless router?
I have an ATT Uverse for my wireless service and have not been able to get the two to work together.
I just want to plug my Time capsule in and connect it to my MacBook Pro with an ethernet an click backup.
So far my computer doesn't reconnect the Time Capsule.
    Thank you for your help

You will need to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to join the wireless network provided by the ATT Uverse router, as follows:
Either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the TC, and then, using the AirPort Utility, change this setting:
AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Wireless tab > Wireless Network Name: <select the ATT Uverse network>
This configuration will allow your Mac to connect by wireless to the ATT Uverse router and perform Time Machine backups wirelessly.
If you want to only do this backups by wire, then you will need to connect the TC directly to the ATT Uverse router by Ethernet, and then, reconfigure the TC as a bridge. You can then connect the Mac to the TC by Ethernet as well for backups.

  • Time Capsule just for backups, not for wifi.

I used to use my Time Capsule for both backups and wifi but constantly had issues, so I just disconnected it in favor of a simple Airport Express. No issues since switching, but now I have this Time Capsule just sitting here and don't do automatic backups any longer...I would like to use solely for back ups, I don't need these backups to be wireless, just for use with Time Machine. I can't find the answer by google, any suggestions?

I am trying to do the same thing but I am having an issue.
I, too, was having issues with using the Time Capsule (new one-2T) as a router and for backup (the Internet was dropping all the time). So I bought a separate router (ASUS RT-N56U) and have that plugged into my Motorola modem. The Time Capsule I have plugged into the router.
Airport Utility and I have become best friends as of late with all the problems I am having and my TC keeps getting lost-AU says that it was part of my network and now can't be found. Strangely, if I go to Open Network Settings from the menu bar and select Assist Me--->Diagnostics--->Select my network--->Continue and when the window pops up about Always Allow Keychain, I click on Always Allow. And that seems to correct the problem with my TC not being found/part of the network. This happens all the time lately.... Ever since I got the new router.
So if you or anyone have any insight into what is going on.... I will try it! Thanks for the help, Judy

  • HT2284 My Time Capsule just stopped working.

Thank you in advance for any help. My Time Capsule just stopped working and I do not get the 'Connection Failed' error message as the Time Capsule is not showing up in the finder window. The light continues to flash amber on the Time Capsule. I am using it with my iMac running Lion. Any help will be really appreciated.

This is just typical Lion.. reboot the TC.. if that doesn't work.. reboot the whole network from fully off.. in order.. modem.. router/TC.. clients. 2min gap between each.
If still has issues.. press reset on the TC and redo it.
Download a utility that has tool properties..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Just ignore the toyland version in Lion.
Next time it happens go to disk page in the utility and hit disconnect all users..
C12 and C17 can suggest some other things.

  • My macbook and time capsule all died within the week.  I can't turn the power on.  any idea?  is there a reset button?

My time capsule is dead.  When I plug it in, there is no power.
The macbook just died yesterday before I could get another backup & wifi.  It won't turn the power on any more.  Is there a reset/reboot button hidden somewhere?  Or do I have to bring it in and try to get all my info back?
    Thanks.

TC die at around 3years.. earlier models generally faster.. so most a dead already.
There is nothing you can do.. either repair or dispose of it. Apple will not assist unless it is less than 3years old and you have applecare on a computer.
Even then they will replace with a refurbished of the same model.
Some of us do not like the throw away model Apple has adopted.. but if it is Gen 1 or even Gen 2 it could be time for update.

    Macbook
These are seldom worth the expense of repairing. Once they are over 3years.. the cost of parts is a significant percentage of the new items.. the hard drive can be pulled to recover your files. Ask a tech in a repair centre for help doing that.

  • The new Time Capsule just came out!

The new Time Casule just came out!

We should all aware of potential but denied RF radiation.  I put plants away from the routers too, or they die.
But you're right. A power line timer may ruin the Time Machine backups if it is doing one while the power line timer switches off.  Apple had never responded to it.
Go purchase one and test the scenario. If such case happens, return it within 14 days with a written report/complaint.
    Options:
    1) install a TimeMachineScheduler which turns off your Time Machine backup process before the power line timer turns off the Time Capsule.
    2) Write your own Apple Script to do a similar thing.
Note: this new version of Airport Time Capsule (as of 2013/6/12) has a new feature "Beamforming" which will concentrate the radiation (like a laser gun) towards your receiving 802.11ac WiFi device, and thus the user.  The radiation will be focused and follows any WiFi devices even they are mobile.  If you want to avoid it, you may add a new AirPort Extreme to extend the network and thus to shift the Beamforming direction only to the AirPort Extreme, instead of you. Cons: the WiFi radiation from the AirPort Extreme will be added on the total radiation in your living/working area.

  • My time capsule just stopped and the power light is off.  i checked and there is power going to it.

I noticed that I could not get on to the internet as it said there was no internet connection.  A look at my time capsule showed no green or yellow light.  I do have a good internet connection and there is good power to the unit.  It just died.  it is about 1.5 years old.  Thoughts?

It is now dead.. thanks to Apple's poor heat venting design.
Leave it disconnected for a few hours to cool off and it may restart.. in which case be ready to drag any data off it you need.
Otherwise you need to get it repaired. apple won't do this.. but I have a bunch of repairers who do.

If you have apple care on any computer, Apple will replace it for you. up to 3years old.
There are many posts on the problem, both here and world wide. Just google.

  • My 19 month old Time Capsule has died.

Can anyone help me with Apple Time Capsule. I have only had it for about 19 months and it has just stopped working. No green light, in fact no lights at all, no power. Therefore no backing up. I have not moved it, changed its location or had to do anything at all up until now. It has been great to date, reliable. It contains a lot of info, backups from my phones and 3 computers. Is it a setting that needs to be adjusted or a reset button or somthing? Please help, devistated.
I saw on google, however very old posts, that they die, overheat, power supplies cook. therefore die. will Apple replace theire product even if it is out of warranty? I mean it is a product design and manufacturing  flaw, failure, mistake. The whole idea of a backup system, TIME CAPSULE, is to be able to preserve data, especially data that needs to be kept by professionals for up to ten years in case of lawsuit or legal action being brought.
    What do I, can I do ?
Apple, Please correct all Time Capsule design and pruduction faults, and REPLACE mine.

I need the model number from your TC.. A1xxx from the rubber mat on the bottom.
Apple will not fix them ever.. they have no spare parts. They will replace in warranty and applecare. So if you have any computer with applecare on it.. apple will replace your dead TC.. you can even buy a computer now.. as long as it has applecare, apple will replace the TC. Check as the rules are complex.. but the TC has to be purchased within 2years of the computer.. before or after doesn't matter.. AFAIK.. that is what is our latest info.
Ring apple and see. No data will be recovered.. they take the old one and wipe the drive for you. If you actually need to recover data.. then you are in trouble.
If you do not have applecare and do not intend buying a new computer in the next little while a fix maybe possible.. everything depends on the model.. but if it is A1355 it is simple fix actually in one way.. if you have some diy skills.

  • I want to use my Time Capsule just as backup, not as a router.  How?

I just want to use my Time Capsule as a wireless back-up and not as a router of any kind.  My mac is already connected to my wireless network and it seems the the Time Capsule wants to run a wireless connection of its own?
    Here's what I've done:
-Plugged the time capsule into a power outlet (have not plugged it into anything else)
-The amber light continues to blink
-Ran a back-up (to do this I had to disconnect from my main wireless and connect the time Time Capsule Connection)
-It ran through a back-up and completed, but when I tried to open time machine, it couldn't connect so I switch back to my main wireless connection
I am not good with setting up connections and things of that nature.. I am afraid to unhook my main wireless.
    What do I do?
    Thanks!

The Time Capsule should be bridged and plugged into the main router.. you can then use the wireless on the TC or the main router.. both will give you internet and TM will be able to backup.
What OS version are you running.. I only know the v5 method of setting up the TC.. where you go to internet tab, connection sharing and select off .. bridge mode.. if you have later OS.. like Lion, you can download the 5.6 utility.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
It is much better than later version. But it will not install into ML.. you will need another member to describe the method or google for it.. bridge TC with 6.1 utility.

  • New Time Capsule: just use as external hard drive without other setup

I have a brand new 2 Tb Time Capsule, and I need to move data to it manually (not as a backup) as soon as I can  to solve another problem.
Can I do this without doing the full blown Time Capsule setup (which I've never done) ?  Just plug it in and wirelessly connect my MBP to it?
The other problem is 1 Tb external drive (G-Raid Mini)  that suddenly cannot be written to, and I need to offload the data (700 Gb of photos) and reformat it immediately.  There isn't enough room on the MBP and the USB connected 1 Tb  Iomega being used as a time machine, and I don't have any other Mac formatted hard drives.   This problem occurred I think because in order to get around an incompatibility problem with an Express Card CF Card Reader after loading Lion, I was advised to restart the MBP in 32 bit mode.  Next thing I know, my G-Raid with all my photos can't be written to.
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Tesserax:
Thank you very much for your response.
I got brave last night, and plugged in the TC, and ran an Ethernet cable from the Switch that connects via an in the wall Ethernet cable to the main VZ FiOS Router (which also propagates a private wireless network).  I just answered the questions in the setup, which led me to setting up a secured wireless network, and  configuring the router part of the TC as a Bridge.  Then I wirelessly connected the MBP to this new network, and began moving some files.
Before doing that I had unplugged the cable from the MPB to the Switch (since instinctively I thought that would be a conflict with the wireless connection via the TC bridge to that switch, and the router behind it, but I'm not sure I'm right about that).
However, I later realized I should have just plugged that cable into the TC, and used that connection to move files (and connect to the Internet), since the wireless connection has been SLOW: about 1 min 40 seconds for each Gb. And it just stops sometimes (I guess because of competition with the traffic from the MBP to the Internet).
I'm moving 370 Gb off the Iomega that came from the G-Raid since I needed to clear space on the Iomega because it still has the duty of doing the Time Machine backup.  I did't want that to run out of disk space on it since I had copied some of what was on the G-Raid there before I realized that the MacBk HD plus the Iomega were not going to have enough room to empty the G-Raid Mini.
As soon as this operation is finished, I'll change the connection from MPB to TC to wired, and start copying directly from the G-Raid  everything that hasn't already been copied somewhere else directly to the Time Capsule storage.  Instinct says I shouldn't disturb the present coping process, much as I'd like to speed things up.
As to your suggestion that I just plug the G-Raid into the TC, it's connection to the MBP is FW800.  It also has a USB 2.0 port, and an E-SATA port.  Wouldn't FW800 to MPB and MBP to TC via Ethernet be faster than a direct USB 2.0 connection?
How do I control what happens between the TC and drives plugged into it from the MBP (a novice kind of question, but I find it confusing that the TC is both a router, and an attached storage device)?  Do I see it from the MBP as if it were directly attached to the MBP?
Do you (or any other forum member reading this) have any suggestions or comments about the above?  Do you think my observations are correct?
Thanks in advance for any comments or help.

  • My time capsule just quit, what could it be

anyone? what about all my files?

    Quit is rather inexact.
Do you mean it is now non-operational and the front LED is off?
If so that is standard fare for the TC that are >3years old. It will need fixing of the power supply.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
Or pull out the hard disk and place it in a usb holder.. and pull out the files.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
Is it solid amber on the front LED.
That is bad.. the hard disk could be dead as well as the power supply.
Did you try just allowing it several hours to cool down? See if it then boot ok. They do just overheat at times.
    How old is the TC?
What model from the rubber base A1xxx?

  • My time capsule just keeps looking for a backup disk

I am having problems with my Time Capsule. I try to back up my mac book pro onto my time capsule and it just states "looking for back up disk" and wont go past that. It still works as a shared folder to store files, however it never comepltes a back up. It had been working fine then all of a sudden stopped. I have tried everything. I reformated it back to the factory settings and set it up again. I didn't lose any of the files I had on it using it as a external hard drive. However it still wont back up. Any help would be great as I have tried multiple things. I am currently using moutain lion.
    Thanks

Do a full reset of TM..
    See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Your reset did nothing to the TC drive.
Try a verify of the backup.. A5 in above reference.. And load the widget, A1 so you know what TM is doing.
If you continue to have issues.. ensure the TC has a short name, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. See C9.. same reference again. Many people use names which are far too long.. it causes issues.
Sometimes mixing data and backups as you are doing has bad effects.. it is certainly not without issues.
    Look at Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Sometimes it does just bomb.. you do have to wipe the drive.. ie erase and start over. Clearly if you are loading data as well onto the TC.. wiping will require you first off load those files. Consider using a USB drive to keep data and backups separate.

  • The HD was recently changed on my MacBook Pro and I lost my iTunes library (Time Capsule also died!) but have all my songs on my iPhone.  How can I copy them to my laptop?

The HD was recently changed on my MacBook Pro and I lost my iTunes library (Time Capsule died also!) but all my songs are still on my iPhone4.  How can I copy them back to my laptop? Tks

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss.  Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • HT3728 My time capsul just went dead. Not sure what to do

Having problems with my time capsul it went dead.

What model from the base, A1xxx?
Dead is not at all unusual for Gen 1 and Gen 2 products.. lots have already died.. alot that survived to now have reached EOL..
Leave it off until it fully cools down and see what happens but good chance the above models will survive only a short time.
    Fix or replace.
If newer model it could be in warranty/applecare.. most of the older ones will no longer be under warranty.
