My time capsule shuts down very frequently. Wondering if it's a software or firmware problem?

My time capsule is shutting down with great reglularity in the past few weeks. I have the latest software upgrade and I keep unplugging and it reboots, but then usually shuts down within an hour or two again. Wondering what might be causing this or if I have to replace it.

The Time Capsule may be overheating. Try placing it on a laptop cooler with plenty of free air space all around.

Firefox is hanging up very frequently (15 times in the last hour). When it hangs, the page stops loading (spinning icon on tab stops) and all windows of Firefox are non-responsive.
It seems to be random sites from gmail to wikipedia to some forums. I have tried everything mentioned on the "Firefox Hangs" page. I am sure that more information will be required. Can Firefox do a memory dump when it hangs?

    Every time Firefox opened

hi again, thanks for the further reply. i have had a look at the website you suggested and the repairs look okay to do. just one more development/question
the day after my original post, the problems seemed to have gone away. but yesterday it started again.
the new thing even with the adapter plugged in, the battery says 0% and shuts down soon as i unplug the adapter.
so looking at the computer info, it says:
    AC Charger (Watts): 0
    Connected: Yes
    Charging: No
    and above that:
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4310
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 8
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 10932
    Cycle C*ount: 7*
*AC adapter cannot charge battery: Yes*
do you know why it wont charge the battery? is this linked to the same solutions you suggested?
thanks again for your help! I really appreciate it

  • Time Capsule shuts down frequently

Over the last few weeks my Time Capsule has been shutting down randomly.  I did a hard reset a couple of weeks ago and that seemed to resolve the situation for a time, but now it has recurred.

The new express I haven't had opportunity to test. I would say it was pretty much the same, although they are not as good as the extreme.. use 10/100 port still, can introduce a slow down. So if you can afford it the Extreme is always going to be better as a router or AP. Still the reality is wireless seldom gets close to 100mbit so whilst theoretical speeds require gigabit.. reality is a harsh word. If you are close enough to get more than 100mbit, you are close enough to use a patch cable. (That is assuming Apple didn't leave out the ethernet port of course).
In my testing the wireless of the whole series is medium.. middle of the road. Whilst the latest generation stuff is supposed to have big power boosts.. I could barely detect a difference.. and in my double storey house.. my old G modem has wireless signal right to the extreme ends of the house.. Neither the TC or latest Extreme could get any signal there at all. YMMV.. !

  • New 2t Time Capsule shuts down: light is off, doesn't show up in network

2T Time Capsule completely shuts down: no activity light at all, doesn't show up in network registry, and is cold to the touch.
If I unplug and replug, it will work again, but will eventually shut down again.
Is this a problem with a sleep proxy service?
This unit is less than a week old.
    I appreciate the help.

The internal power supply on the Time Capsule is defective. Soon, the Time Capsule will not turn on at all.
Please contact Apple for a replacement Time Capsule as soon as possible.

  • Time Capsule Shuts Down or Powers Down During or After Backup

Just started backing up my wife's MBP (Leopard) to our Time Capsule via Time Machine. Previously the Time Capsule had only been used as an Airport, and had never shut down by itself. Now, inexplicably, the Time Capsule powers itself down. If I stop backing up to it, it stays on. If I run Time Capsule, it powers down. Powers up again fine - unplug, wait 10 seconds, and it cycles to a green light. Then a few hours later, Time Capsule is discovered powered down. Its not the cats, not the dog - it seems to be whenever Time Machine runs.
Checked the firmware on the Time Capsule and upgraded it to the most current. Made no difference.
    What is going on?

So this just started happening to my Gen 1 500GB Time Capsule as well. I came across these articles:
    http://www.macgasm.net/2010/07/12/time-capsule-recalled/
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2010/jul/13/apple-time-capsule-failure -analysis
The second one claims that the shutdown is due to an "overheating fault in some of the electronics around the power supply." I am going to check the serial number on mine to see if it falls in the range for a recall-replacement (since I am way out of warranty).
Even if yours isn't in the recall range, is it possible it's damaged from prior overheating?

  • Time Capsule shuts down

My Time Capsule occasionally shuts down on its own. Everything is plugged in. When I unplug it from the back and plug it back in, it powers up again. It will work for days, even weeks and then power down again. I have tried plugging it into different power strips from other outlets and it sill happens. I brought it and the power cord to the the Genius Bar twice, 1 time for 2 weeks and they said they could not replicate the situation.

As with many HD today, the TCs HD does have a sleep feature. What exactly do you mean by "shuts down"?
Does it not wake on its' own when a TM machine backup takes place?
    Do you lose internet connectivity?
Does your wireless network disappear on your Mac?
Another idea is this: When you look at the TCs power cord in the back of the device, does the white tip disappear completely into the back of the TC? If not then it is not pushed in all the way and power could be lost. I discovered this one last year.
    Cheers!

  • Another Time Capsule shuting down

After one year having this famous TC disease, I mean the Time capsule shuting down after 20secondes, i usually restart it several times and the TC finally remains on. Now the TC is dead. It systematically shuts down after 20 sec. The factory reset does not change anything. After 2 years of use, including 1 year with troubles i do have exactly the same problem That was described so many times before me ( just Google ' time capsule shuts off ' to see the extent of this problem). And Apple still do not consider it as a quality problem except for a very limited serial numbers... Reliability and Apple divorced a few years ago!

  • Every time I shut down my computer, I lose all my settings - like things I removed from the dock are all back, the trackpad resets to original settings, etc.  How can I get my preferences to stay like they used to?  Thx!!

I recently went through a nightmare with my computer where there was an "old" operating system put on my computer and I guess File Vault was turned on.  Since then I've upgraded and am now running 10.8.3 but got locked out of my old admin account when I tried to restore my computer from Time Capsule.  Attempts to recover anything from my old admin account have been futile
So, I started a new Admin acct and have been trying to reconstruct my life, but every time I shut down and restart my computer, it erases/resets all my prefernces, like all the things in the Dock that I remove all come back and the track pad is always moving in the wrong direction again and has to be reset every time.  Is there a way I make my prefernces stick??
BTW if anyone knows how to recover all my lost stuff that would be beyond amazing too
    Thanks in advance!

Eustace, thank you so much for writing back.  I will try what you suggested!!
thx for your reply - apparently when I went to the Apple store a long time ago, they restore maybe photos and itunes etc from my external hard drive (passport).  I guess at that time they reinstalled an earlier operating system than my macbook came with and that somehow corrupted FileVault.  apparently there was no sparse bundle (whatever that is) for my old admin account and they said that ever since the install of the older OS that it was actually NEVER backing up anything in my admin account.
Then, I bought Time Capsule and starting backing up to that instead.  I started having problems with it being slow etc and then StartUp Disk full errors and didn't know what to do, so I "Restored" from Time Capsule and that's when I lost everything in my Admin account and was locked out when I tried to log in - it said File Vault error ..."
anyway - that's THAT sad story.  I was told to create a new admin account and I've basically been trying to start over - even though I have a partial save of my computer in Crash Plan and I DO see a sparse bundle listed in there, but I just don't know enough about computers to know if it's something I can get back or if I am just totally doomed.
I'm afraid to reinstall anything because if there is even a remote shot that the other files are still floating around in my computer, I feel like that chance will be shot forever.  I need to hire McGee from NCIS, I just KNOW he could get those files back for me!!!

I don't use Facebook, but I can say that clearing the cache every time you shut down is excessive - unless you're sure the cache is corrupt you should leave it alone.  It exists to speed up your browsing experience by loading frequently requested items from your drive rather than downloading them fresh from the internet each time.  So, I would say stop clearing your cache and see what happens.
As for clearing cookies: I'm not sure what method you currently use, but I would recommend you download and install CCleaner.  It's free, and allows you to build up a list of cookies that you want to clear and those you want to keep, before deleting them.
Both of these may help speed things up by reducing the amount of work Safari has to perform whilst browsing.  Regardless, I'd say that, unless there's a reason you've not mentioned for performing the "purging" that you do, making these two changes should see improvements in general web browsing if not specifically when loading Facebook.

  • Why it takes long time to shut down after i upgrade to OS X ver 10.8.2?

why it takes long time to shut down after i upgrade to OS X ver 10.8.2?

Can't really say, but I see this occurring on all of my Macs since the 10.8.2 update and keep reading about it at several other Mac user boards.
Bottom line: it's a general problem, but more of an inconvenience, than a serious problem. Probably will be solved with the next update.

  • Why does Mountain Lion take a long time to shut down my MacBook Air when I chose "Shut Down?"  Much longer than before the upgrade.

Mountain Lion takes a long time to shut down.  Much longer then Lion.
    Any comments appreciated.

  • Verizon app Verizon_MCCITrayApp_Window hangs every time I shut down Windows

Ever since I installed updated Verizon software on my PC an "Verizon_MCCITrayApp_Window program has stopped working" message displays every time I shut down. I uninstalled all Verizon programs but the Home Agent, which I'm hesitant to uninstall in case I need it for troubleshooting. At the same time I started receiving this shutdown error, I can no longer click on a link in my Thunderbird mail (verizon.net account) and open Firefox. Clicking a link in Thunderbird hangs the program and my whole system stops.
Both my Thunderbird and Firefox are at the latest version and I want to avoid re-installing either for fear of losing all my email or all my bookmarks.
Has anyone else had a problem with the last update of Verizon software?
    If so, what remedied it?
    Thank you.

It is a great troubleshooting tool. Please uninstall it off of your computer to see if thats the problem. After doing that, reinstall the program back on to see if you have the same problems.

  • Macbook Shuts Down Very Very Slowly - Help please :(

Hi, my Macbook (Snow Leopard) has been able to shut down very quickly since I purchased Snow Leopard. However, just a few days back, it started to shut down very very slowly, often "lagging" or being "stuck" at a blue page before it actually switches itself off. I checked Console & thought these messages could probably be the reason why. But then again, I deleted iAntiVirus and such messages continue to appear.
    Can anyone help please? Thanks
