My Time Capsule won't let me copy files to it any more

I've got 2 Time Capsules, one 2TB a couple of years old.  I use it to back up a MacBook Pro and iMac via Time Machine, plus store a large number of files. Until recently it's worked absolutely fine - haven't even had the usual "horribly slowMacine  since upgrading to Mountain Lion" problem.  But now I can't back up with Time Machine at all.   Till today it's gone through the motions, but after appearing to copy a couple of megs (of about 15GB) it stops with no apparent error message.
Today I've noticed it's also begun to behave oddly if I try to copy any files to it.  I wondered if it had somehow become read only, but it allows me to create folders, rename files etc.  But if I try to copy any files to an existing folder, I get the informative "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)  The disk isn't full - over 300GB free (or reported as free by Airport)
Incidentally I have another, newer Time Capsule which I was keeping as a duplicate device for photos / music / documents etc (rather than letting the sparsebundle file gobble up the space as it's done on the 2TB device)  I started to create a new backup on that (over ethernet) but have lost patience after about 6 hours watching it get slower and slower.  Current projection would be the initial 200GB backup will take around a week.  But that's another story.
So can anyone suggest how I can resolve the error code -50 problem and get back to a functioning Time Capsule please
Thanks

Not really any definite source of endless set of streams of (very helpful) consciousness.
I do not like 7.6.3 as it has a lot of issues.. but see how it goes for you.
If you want fast backup.. connect by ethernet and turn off wireless. Difficult to really suggest much else for now.
I am definitely of the opinion that Apple needs to get a few programmers off iOS and onto Mac OS and particularly networking and firmware on their routers.. which has shown less than stellar reliability in later versions.
I think using SMB compliant names helps.. for everything.
That is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
If you need to isolate the TC from the network and do backups that way. You might need to turn off wireless in the computers until you finish the first round backup.
Erase done (very quickly)
That is not a low level format. That is merely wiping the allocation tables.
I do strongly recommend a one pass erase.
In the version 5 utility it is zero out data. But it is a single low level format.
And keep your eye on the SMART.. although the TC should throw up disk error if it goes off.

  • Time capsule won't let me access latest back up

I had to replace my hard drive and when I tried restoring from time capsule it only brought back files from summer 2011. But when I enter time machine it shows that there was a full back-up done just this past December 2012. How can I get everything back from 2012??? Plead help. I really just want my photos back.

Read the stuff on restoring particular folders.

Read all the stuff from Q14-17
People should do a disk image before the upgrade.. not use TM. It is 1000 times easier to restore from a full disk image.

  • Adobe Bridge CC won't let me copy files to a CD

I have formatted a CD with Windows Explorer and tried to copy files from Bridge CC to folders I have created on a CD to be printed.  When I select file and then copy to and choose the folder on the CD It says I don't have permission.  I am able to copy files from one folder to another  in my computer and folders on an external drive with Bridge CC.  I have the Windows 7 64 bit operating system.  I am able to do this using Windows Explorer.  I would appreciate any help on this.

I do burn discs with nero and when I do that it is closed and you can't add more later.
It seems Nero can do this trick but after the second time Bridge recognizes it as a locked read only device.
Personally I would switch to a USB stick which is much faster and easier to use.

  • Firefox won't let me upload files to nearly any Web site, so how can I fix this issue?

Whether it is gmail, Facebook, or more specifically this site (http://www.carnivalentertainment.com/index.htm), Firefox won't let me upload any type of file. Of course, if the Web site offers a standard uploader then I have a better chance of having a successful upload, but if it is not offered, then I am basically out of luck.

  • IMessage won't let me connect through phone number any more?!

I used to be able to talk through iMessage using my mobile number, now the option is just grey and I cannot click it - only my email address which is really frustrating!
How do I get use of my phone number back to the service?!

I don't know if you're talking about sending, receiving, or both.
Anyway, in Settings > Phone, is your phone number set correctly?  Does it have the international dialing prefix set correctly ("+1" in U.S.)?

  • Time Capsule won't back up, privilege message error HELP!

Time Capsule used to work, now it doesn't.
    1) I go to System Preferences > Time Machine
    2) I click on Change Disk...
    3) Window drops down and I select my Time Capsule, then click on Use for Backup
    4) Window pops up saying "Enter your user name and password so Time Machine can access the file server "name of my Time Capsule". No field for user name, just Password - so I enter this and click on Connect.
    5) Drop down window appears saying: "The specified user does not have read, write and append privileges on this network volume. Please connect as a different user or contact your network administrator."
Thing is - I am the admin.
Can't figure out how to rectify this. Have already tried restoring factory settings to Time Capsule but run into same problem.
    Any ideas?

Exact same problem. In addition, Time Capsule won't let me create new folders in the root (/data) folder anymore, although I can still read and write files in already existing folders.
I thought it was because I upgraded to Snow Leopard, so I did a clean install of Leopard OS on my Mac Pro with erasing the HDD, but still no luck.

  • Won't let me copy to hard drive post power surge

Ok, to make a long story short, I hope, I had an electrical fire (everyone's ok) that involved and destroyed my laptop's power cord and as part of that fun I seem to have had a power surge that has reset some of the defaults on my computer but not all. Some of the folders I created prior to the surge are gone, etc. The only real problem is that the permissions on my internal hard drive seem to have been reset. Below are the things it will and will not allow me to do.
-- I cannot copy files from a flash drive, cd or external hard drive to the internal hard drive. I get that circle with a line through it. Clicking and dragging, copy/paste, nothing works.
-- I can move stuff that is already on the internal hard drive from folder to folder.
-- I can save email attachments to the internal hard drive.
-- I can copy stuff from internal the hard drive to a flash drive, cd or external hard drive.
-- I can read the files on flash drives, cds or external hard drives, such as a movie file, just fine, they run without a glitch. The peripherals did not suffer any resets as a result of the fire/power surge. When it happened the computer shut down automatically and I think that saved the accessories from being damaged because the computer is the only thing that showed any changes after it happened.
And before someone asks, yes, I checked, I have 40 GB of HD space so it's not a space issue.
I right clicked on MAC HD and did the Get Info and looked at the details of the permissions on various files and tried shifting some of those around but even though it says Read and Write it still won't let me copy to the internal drive from other sources. Interestingly when I got to the User file it was marked Read Only but changing it to Read Write didn't help. Something I did once worked but then it stopped working so I have no idea what it was. I put everything back the way it was. Could somebody please help me? My computer is old and dieing a slow painful death but if I can make it last a little longer that will make my life so much easier. Please let me know if you need any system info or anything.
    *Thank you!!*
PS. I'm not posting this on the peripheral thread because the problem isn't really the peripherals, it's the system not wanting to play nice with others, so that's why I put this over here.

Hi. It's not a dumb question, cause if it is then my answer is really stupid, what's a repair permission? lol I don't know what that is so I guess the answer is no, though I can guess from the name it's a program to fix permissions if the files get messed up? I knew how to change the permissions in Get Info but past that I was getting into things I don't know so I figured it was time to ask for help or I'd be on here asking how to un-erase a hard drive. jk So how would I do that and is there anything else I should do?
Sorry if my initial post was a bit defensive. I had a moderator give me flak over some minor thing on a post once and I was supremely frustrated with this problem. Sorry if it came out kinda angry. I appreciate any help you can give me.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to internet

Just bought one to use as a joint hard drive for the two office macs and to use to connect wirelessly to the net. I've connected it by ethernet through the BT wireless 2wire router (the wireless function doesn't work on it - it's broke)
In the menu bar the airport signal is showing three bars so I'm guessing this means a weaker signal but it won't let my mac connect to the internet but will allow the other mac one on, only occasionally
    dumping it off.
Is this a common problem? Is there anything i can do to boost the signal?
Both mac's have leopard, mine is the last model (white one) the other is the new one. Could this be a factor?
Or am i doomed to have wires all over my office for eternity?
Any help would be much appreciated

Sam - I had the same issue & had to do two things (as directed by tech support via phone): the name you assign to time capsule should be 6 characters or less with no punctuation (so the default Mike's Time Capsule name that Airport Utility gives is not good), and more importantly, as mentioned in several posts in these forums, power cycle your cable modem so it can pick up a new IP address. My tech support agent had me leave it unplugged for 10-15 minutes for good measure - also beware of a lithium ion backup battery in some VoIP modems - you'll need to look for this if the modem lights are still shining after you unplug it from AC power.

  • HELP!  I got a new iPhone and want to download my music from my computer so I don't have to down load song by song on my phone.  iTunes Match won't let me copy it from my computer.  What do I do?

I have iTunes Match and it's been fine until now. I'm trying to download my music to my phone so I don't have to use the wifi to play it all the time.....but iTunes match won't let me copy from my computer without shutting it off. If I do that then turn it back on then I lose all the music anyway.
I'm so frustrated and can't download song by song to my phone.
    help.

If you mean you want to sync your music from your computer to your iPhone you need to disable iTunes Match on the iPhone. Go to Settings > Music and set to iTunes Match to OFF (not green). You may need to wait a few minutes for the change to register with iTunes. Connect the iPhone via USB/Thunderbolt and sync the music.

  • My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link  EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
    However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
    Thanks again

I have two nooks. One ADE sees and will let me copy books to. The other one it sees, but won't let me copy books to. I've deleted the manifest file multiple times. I've re-installed ADE. What next?

  • New MBP and Time Machine won't let me search out my NAS to save too. Any ideas?

When trying to set up time machine and using a NAS drive in my wireless network Time Machine won't let me search and select the storage device. I can access the storage and save/retrieve files so I can see and use it. Anyone got any ideas please?
    Brand New MBP running Mavericks.

I'm having the same issue with Mavericks - and it appears to be Mavericks specific. I don't have this problem with Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion can see both of my NAS drives.
Additionally, with Mavericks Time Machine won't see your backup properly. It may only see the most recent backup. Though in my case it wouldn't load either one (I had two on different drives). To recover some files I had to use a machine running Mountain Lion to mount a backup file then I was able to extract the files to a USB drive, which I then moved to the Mavericks machine.
I've tried using terminal to run tmutil commands without luck. I have mounted the volume I want to use - it shows when I do "ls -l /Volumes". Then when I do sudo tmutil setdestination /Volumes/VOLUMENAME the system seems to go into an infinite loop. I have to ^c to get back to terminal.
Clearly with Time Machine on Mavericke Apple has really screwed the pooch.

  • HT3728 My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home network each day (intermittently) between about 1000-1800. My modem is working properly, and I can get on-line by hooking my computer straight to my modem, so I know it's the Time Capsule at fault. I

My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home wireless network for several hours each day -- usually between 1000-1830 or so. My modem is working correctly and I can still get on-line by going straight from my computer (MacBook Pro) to the Ethernet port. It must be the Time Capsule -- any ideas?

    Any ideas?
    Wireless Interference
Might be caused by a cordless phone in the vicinity. To give you an example, my neighbor.....across the street...used to be able to literally crash my wireless network if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone.
I discovered this by accident one day after spending weeks trying figure out why my network would crash at random times.
Other possibilities include a wireless security/camera system near you
Still other things might be an amateur ham radio operator....which should not interfere....but again from experience, I know that this can occur.
Yet another possibility is another wireless network near you that is being turned on and off at random times. Some users power up their modem/router only when they want to do so and leave it off otherwise.
Some general rules to help avoid interference:
Move any cordless phones that you might have as far away as possible from the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid placing other electronic devices....computer, television, amplifier, satellite receiver, etc. near the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid metal surfaces near the Time Capsule and/or your computers
Elevate the Time Capsule as much as possible. Think of it as a water sprinkler....you want to get the room as wet as possible
Experiment with different wireless channels on the Time Capsule. To do this:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click on the Time Capsule
    Click Edit
    Click the Wireless tab
    Click Wireless Options
Start with Channel 11 on the 2.4 GHz band and work your way down
It is unlikely that you are picking up interference on the 5 GHz band since there are.....for now at least.....far fewer networks using this frequency.

  • Time Capsule won't mount after upgrade to iTunes 9

See my full post in the Time Capsule support section ("Help! Time Capsule won't mount after installing iTunes 9"). My music library is on my Time Capsule, but after installing iTunes 9, it won't mount on my iMac G5. I can use the internet, but the disk won't mount. My Powerbook hasn't been updated yet and the Time Capsule mounts fine.

To make it easier, here's the post:
"My music library is on my 500 Gb Time Capsule. I just installed iTunes 9 on my iMac. It updated my library and synced my iPhone. Now, the TC won't mount. I still have internet connectivity, but I can't access my media or print to my printer connected to the TC. I can use the computer and everything, but if I hover my mouse over the TC disks menu bar icon, I get the spinning beach ball there. If I try to connect using my Network icon in the sidebar, it allows me to log in and get to the screen to select the volume I want to mount, then stops responding. In the Activity Monitor, AFP Client & AirPort Base Station Agent are not responding. I also have a Powerbook G4 w/Leopard (10.5.8) which hasn't been updated to iTunes 9 yet. The Time Capsule mounted fine on it."

  • My Time Capsule won't allow my computer to back up.  It says it is already in use but that is what it is being used for.

My Time Capsule won't allow my computer to back up.  It says it is already in use but that is what it is being used for. It has been working fine for years.  All of a sudden I keep getting a message that TC (time capsule) cannot complete back up as it is already in use.  I am doing the backups automatically through Time Capsule.

Restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting and reconnecting the power adapter. When it's back online, open the AirPort Utility application and check to see whether there's a firmware update for it.
