My Time Machime is. full what next?

what do i do to save my info and get the time machine working again? I dont have enough memory to use Lion.either, Computer says not enough....

As your backup drive begins to fill up to its capacity, Time Machine intelligently deletes the oldest backups to make room for newer ones (and will alert you if the "Notify after old backups are deleted" option is selected in Time Machine preferences).
If your backup disk is filling up often causing your oldest available backups to be erased sooner than you might want, consider the following options:
Use an additional drives for your backups or transfer your backups to a new, larger drive as detailed above. When you connect a new drive for the first time, use Time Machine preferences to select the drive.  Tip: You can also browse the original backup drive for past backups by using "Browse other Time Machine Disks"--to see this choice, hold the Option key then click the Time Machine menu in the Finder (to see the menu, "Show Time Machine status in the menu bar" must be selected in Time Machine preferences.
Reduce the amount of information being backed up by adding to the "Exclude these items from backups" list in Time Machine preferences, as mentioned above. Your backup drive will fill up less often.
Delete file(s) that are no longer needed (such as from your desktop, Documents folder, or other Home folder locations), so they will no longer be backed up.  You can also enter the Time Machine restore interface and find files that can be removed from the backup drive itself to conserve space. To do this, select the file(s) and from the Action pop-up menu (gear icon) in the Time Machine Finder window choose "Delete All Backups of...". Be sure to only delete files you are sure you won't need or want to restore later.

You should be able to add more ram to your iMac in order to run Lion.  What is the model identifier?

  • When a Time Capsule is full, what do you do?

Curious... What is Apple's stated position on what to do once your TC fills up? With upwards of 500GB internal drives these days, it isn't hard to imagine a 1T TC and three Macs.
Would you leave the TC backups alone an hook up a wireless drive?

Pondini, I was trying to distinguish between what we have, by experimentation, decided we can do, and what Apple says we are supposed to do. Philosophical conjecture, I suppose.
You can have >1 TC? Really? With only one connected to the internet? I didn't think of that. Would they all be accessible from TM? If Apple says that can be so, then hush my mouth.
I've not seen anything "official," but I've seen some threads to that effect, where folks have used either two Time Capsules or a TC and an Airport to "extend" their range (you might want to check out the Time Capsule forum, hiding in the +Digital Life+ section, at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1253)
As far as backing the iMac up to an external drive and letting the MacBook have exclusive use of the TC, that just buys time, because eventually the TC fills up.
So... if when a TC fills up you really can get another one and add it to the network, then that is a solution that Apple says it will support.
Perhaps we're missing something here: Time Machine will, eventually, fill up all the space available to it. Then it will begin deleting the oldest backups to make room for new ones. That way, it automatically maintains as many backups as it can in the space it has.
The trick is to provide enough space so it can keep a reasonable "depth" of backups. Whether that's 1.5 times the size of the data it's backing-up or 10 times, depends on how you use your Mac and how long you feel it's necessary to keep backups of things that were changed or deleted long ago.

  • Time Capsule is full, now what?

My time capsule is full, what do I do now

open the airport utility to the disk page and erase is an option there.. just use quick erase .. it will take less than a min.. any other erase is a full low level format and will take many hours.

  • Archived Time Capsule now whats next

    Hi guys,
I have recently just archived 1.7TB of my TC backups. When I bought the 2 iMacs with 1TB drives I thought a 2TB TC would have been fine. Just under 12months my TC is full. Thanks to the advice on this forum I have gone through the process of archiving the data (40hours and $240 later). Which Im happy to cop on the chin every 12 months if Im able to be fully protected. I love the wireless backups, I have never been this protected in my home business.
My question to you guys is, Now whats next in regards to getting back my space on the TC so I can start backing up again? I thought if I simply delete the sparsebundles then I will have the space back and everything will be fine. Does it keep the history of the incremental bundles, ie can I plug in my archive and use Time Machine? Do I now format the TC, and if I do are my settings retained?
Thanks in advance guys.. Hopefully soon I will be able to answer some question on here..
    Cheers,
    Phil

Thanks for the quick reply Pondini,
I run a small web development business so an archive going back at least 24 would be ideal, mostly for client accounts and business account management.
Then you may want to back one of your Macs up to a USB drive connected to the TC. And I'd strongly suggest keeping some sort of "secondary" backups, at least. See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum), for some suggestions.
I have read that Time Machine does just overwrite the oldest backups, even seen in the Sys Preferences panel. Though what prompted me to look at the archive was that I got a message saying that TC was full and backups weren't being generated.
Are you sure it said it wasn't doing new backups? On Snow Leopard, if you have the +Notify after old backups are deleted+ box checked in Time Machine Preferences > Options, the message is just a notice -- backups continue. See the blue box in #C4 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
Or did you get the message in the pink box there? If so, did that Mac have to do a full or very large backup?
If it was a Mac running Leopard, however, and you got the message in the tan box, just remove the check from the +Warn when old backups are deleted+ box in TM Preferences > Options.

It isn't a file, it's a folder. It will have the same name as your catalog, but will have the extension data. It will be in the same folder along with your catalog. If you need to use the search feature to search for *.lrdata.

    Hi, Kenny.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are a couple things that I would recommend trying.  Try closing all open applications and power cycle the device.  Next, go through the section labeled Troubleshoot issues on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in the second article below.  If the issue persists, try completely signing out of the iTunes Store on the iOS device and sign back in.  Be sure to test downloading an application after each step.

Go to the folder with you Lightroom Catalog (usually in Pictures) and delete the folder ending in .lrpreviews
This contains the previews for the files Lightroom has linked to. They will need to be rebuilt which can be done while working or selecting an amount you want to rebuild and accessing the rebuild command in the Library Dropdown menu...

iPhoto crashed. When reopened, 70+  some events were grayed out (no photos).  Restored iPhoto library from Time Machine, fewer grayed events.  Said yes to a msg on fixing library, 3000 more photos. Still wrong.  What next to do?

Do you still have the library that you were using when the crash occurred?  If so apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • My 4TB G-Drive failed after (Firewire) installation of Maverick.  A 1TB G-drive using USB works.  What next?

I have an IMac running OS X 10.9.1.
I purchased a new 4TB G-Drive.  After installation with Time Machine the drive correctly made backups for about 2 weeks.  I installed Maverick.
Then I began to see the message “Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder”
I called G-Technology. Using the erase function of Disc Utility we received the message “Disk erase failed.  Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t unmount disk”. It was determined that the disk was bad and I returned it to the vendor.
A second and then a third disk experienced similar failures after only two backups.  G-Technology then said the problem was a computer problem
I called Apple support and allowed them access to my computer.  After their intervention the disk worked for two backups and then failed.
    I purchased a 1 TB G-Drive yesterday.
I thought I would give it a test and so I made it the backup drive for time machine.  It made a primary backup and has been continuing to back up without the feared error message.
I went to the internet and have discovered that my problem has been experienced by others. It only occurs after an upgrade to Maverick.
It also only occurs with a Firewire connection.
The new drive has a USB connector.  It works fine.
    What next?

Which iMac (please be very specific) and also why have you not updated to 10.9.2?

  • I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for several years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both?

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

I can't sign in or out of iCloud.  Forgot the password to an email address I no longer have access to.  What next?  From what I'm reading in the forums, once the email address is set up it cannot be changed.  True?  If so, um, stupid.
Message to log in to iCloud every time I reply or forward an email.  Have to indicate to ignore every time.  Annoying.

    Hello florabb,
You may be able to change or reset the password on this old iCloud/Apple ID account, even if you no longer have access to the email address associated with it. Once the password is changed/updated, you should be able to log your iPhone out of the old iCloud/Apple ID account and log in to the correct new account. You may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud - Apple Support

  • 2TB Time Capsule suddenly full after only a few months?

    Hello all,
Apologies in advance if this is a question that's already been answered.  I've been searching through threads, but didn't seem to see it.
I have a late 2009 iMac (27 inch, 2.8 GHz i7, 4GB Ram) that had a hard drive affected by the Seagate Recall.  About the same time I was alerted to this, the Firewire drive I'd been using for timemachine backups reached it's capacity.  I figured it was time to get a bigger backup drive and went out and bought a 2TB Time Capsule.  This was on November 5th of 2012.
After making a bootabe clone of hard drive (just as a 2nd backup) I set up my time capsule.  I did the first backup via ethernet, and then, per posts that I found on the forum,( I set it up so that it was connected to my existing wireless router via ethernet, and let my iMac back up to it wirelessly over the home network.  Once or twice, when I've changed large amounts of data, I've reconnected the iMac to the timecapusle via the ethernet cable and let it backup that way.  But overall, the backups have happened over the air.  My home user folder is aprox 632 GBs.
I also had tried to set up my macbook (Intel, late 2006) to back up to the same timecapsule, but was having issues and ended up just turning time machine off since I haven't had time to trouble shoot them.  That macbook (which only has 60 gig harddrive on it) has at least one full backup on it's part of the Time Capsule, but not many more.
So basically my setup looks like this:
Cable Modem connected to Belkin Wireless Router via Ethernet
2TB TC connected to Belkin Router via Ethernet in Bridge mode.
iMac connecting to TC via the wireless network created by router. (with the exception of a few times)
Today, I was surprised that, only a couple months later, that Time Machine told me that the Time Capsule was full, and that it had deleted older backups to make room.  My earliest back up is now Dec 6th 2012.
Previously, my 1 TB firewire drive lasted several years before it started having to delete older backups.
Am I right to think this is out of the ordinary?  And if it isn't, can anyone point me in the right direction to try and figure out why this is ocurring.  I'm not really sure what the first step in trouble shooting the issue would be.
    Thanks so much in advance,
    avi

Thanks for the quick respons djcastaldo.
I'm not 100% sure what you mean by a "virtual machine"... but I'm guessthing that means I'm not doing it..
I do have about 64 gigs in my dropbox folder... but the day to day changes to the files in there are fairly small (mostly updates to word processing files as I move between computers).  I don't think that would be the issue.
Would the best way to try and find the culrprit file be to just scan through my home folder and look for large files with recent "modified" dates?
    Thanks so much,
    avi
