My toddler slid a paper clip into my iMac optical drive slot. Drive would not take a disc.

I figured out a way to get the paper clip out and wanted to post for others that may have the same problem. I cut a thin piece of cardboard from a cereal box and added some 2 sided tape to it. I slid the cardboard and tape into the slot and pulled it out slowly. The paper clip came out on the first try.

Now give the toddler the two-sided tape, and hope it sticks!
Good tip, others have had this same problem.

iPhoto won't recognize SD card placed directly into my iMac's SD slot. Image Capture shows the name of the SD card but does not show any photos. If I use the Finder I can see all of the photos on the sd card so I know they are there. I've previously imported lots of photos from teh SD slot directly into iPhoto. Tried a second SD card with the same issue.

    Using iPhoto 8.1.2
    Mac OS 10.6.8

Make a temporary, backup copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
any tips on how to recover those lost photos?
If you don't recover the photos with the above you'll need to run a recovery app like MediaRECOVER to recover the photos from the memory card.

would not open, used paper clip as advised in help now won't close, error message

OK, I decided to upgrade to Mavericks. 1st I checked to see if Parallels 8 woudl work w it. It said yes, but upgrade parallels 8 1st so I did that (& then realized I should update virus def & run Windows updates also. Don't use it very much  180 days ago it said).
Then saw some reports of mail not working so well so decided to clean out a lot of un-needed emails on my Mac. Also ran updates to Mountain Lion.
Then closed everything & shut down. Left it off for a few min to clear out any left over electronic garbage & rebooted. Opened App store & clicked the Mavericks free download. Almost immediated it gave me error message & suggested doing it from the Purchased section.
Ok, I tried downloading it there. 2-3 times got same almost immediate error message.
Then, I think it was after disconnecting external HD & printer I tried again & it was looking good w download. It was fluctuating between 40-45 min time remaining & showing almost 500 mb downloaded when I got the error message again.
btw, I also got an error message when running Windows update. There was an unknown error code when I tried updating Service Pack 1 (which it showed I needed, although I'm thinking that is kind of strange since I've had Windows 7 on a MacBookPro since shortly after I bought the original MacBookPro in April 2010. (Spilled water on it last May & Apple store said it would need expensive repair so bought this replacement that they used my Time Machine backups to install everything on. This was right as I was getting ready to move & I haven't yet found the old one to see if maybe it would work. It should be in one of my boxes).
So, if it is having this much trouble just getting it installed I'm kind of afraid to go ahead. Wondering why some report it works fine & a lot of others saying no.
I very frustrated since I just want to be able to have the functionality I had to be able to sync Numbers between my iPad & my Mac.

  • How can I move clips from one library to another? Clips are still in original drive and not in new drive.

I am using iMovie 10.0.7 on a 1-week old iMac 27" running Yosemite 10.10.2. I migrated from iMovie 9 on a 2008 iMac running Snow Leopard and updated the libraries and events, etc.
I have two external drives connected via USB. I want to move / consolidate the library and clips from one of the external drives to the new iMac's 3TB fusion drive. This is to make room on the external drive to run Time Machine backups.
Apple's instructions on managing libraries and moving/copying clips/events tell me to drag to move between libraries and to Option-drag to copy. However, simply dragging only copies. I find that if I Command-drag the events/clips, I can "move" them. But when I look outside iMovie in the Mac OS X Finder, the event folders and clip files themselves are still sitting in the original drive.
I'm very perplexed as to how to really move the clips and event structure. Should I manually copy the clips and event folder structure outside of iMovie? I worry I will mess up iMovie's internal record keeping and folder structure information.
    Thanks in advance.

Ahh, Ok. I actually had to go to Lynda.com to watch a training video of this highly bassackwards maneuver, but now I have it. In other words, while the intuitive thing is to make a new event to hold the clip you want and then open the old event and drag the clip into it's new event, the only way to accomplish this maneuver is to NOT create a new event, but rather, go to the clip AFTER the one you want to move, select it and then Right-Click on it and select SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP (or go to FILE>SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP). Then you wait a few seconds while the program thinks a bit (no feedback it is doing this - just a pause) and then it automatically creates a new event with the clip you wanted. Now just double-click the new event and name it something meaningful.
    Thanks for your help!

  • How do I eject (or get out somehow) a mini cd I slid into my MacBook Pro CD slot (rather stupidly not thinking about its small size not being a good fit)?

How do I eject (or get out somehow) a mini cd (3" size) which I slid into my MacBook Pro's CD slot? (Rather stupidly, I admit, not thinking about its small size keeping it from being a good fit.) And of course, it didn't seat on the cd's spindle, and thus is not being "seen" by the computer as being present when I press the eject button, so nothing happens. Because the CD slot has a membrane covering the slot, I can't see in to locate where it is or to try and slip it out manually, either.
Details about my computer, although I don't know that these are needed, are as follows:

I have a DV7 QE, and replaced the hard drive that came with it with an SSD. So far, so good. But then I installed the original drive into the secondary bay, and it is not recognized. Are there some kind of jumper settings I need to set to make it recognizable as an additional disk drive?

I think so. I have never had a laptop with two SATA hard drives but I had to set jumpers on a desktop. The first hard drive was set as primary and the other drive had the jumper on slave. That was a long time ago but you can't go wrong with that. I have noticed that some laptops had disabled the second SATA slot. Make sure that the slot is not disabled in the BIOS.

  • Fitting 'bare' Matshita UJ-875S into iMac G5 optical drive housing

I have just ordered a UJ-875S optical drive to replace the original Matshita UJ-825 in my iMac G5. I see that this replacement drive will come 'bare' and need to be fitted into the existing optical drive housing. I'm not anticipating problems here, but would appreciate any tips / advice on things to look out for. Thanks.

It was no problem to fit after all. Took about 20 minutes.

  • Importing video clips into slide shows

I often insert video clips into slide shows.  They mix nicely with pan and zoom still photos.  However, the type of video clips that can be inserted is very restricted.  Why is this?
Elements can deal with a wide variety of video formats but, as far as I can see, only AVI and WMV videos can be imported into slide shows.  Compact digital cameras typically use AVI, MOV and MP4 formats.  My camera produces MPG videos, which I cannot import.  I have to convert the clips into AVI format and reimport these into Organiser etc - which is very fiddly. I am considering buying a new camera that produces AVI video clips as standard.
Why is the choice of video formats so limited? I cannot find a list of allowable formats on the Adobe site.

    Hi David
Thanks for this. I tried that, but again, Streamclip only imported content from the first clip, ignoring the rest...on further inspection, all the VOB files were sub-divisions of the the first item (in essence, the system had chopped up the first recording into sections and formatted them as VOB files, but failed to do that for the remaining content of the DVD).
I booked an appt with a Mac Genius today and he downloaded Handbrake and this appears to be the way forward - you can isolate any of the content from the DVD, and save into either avi or mp4 files. I currently don't need Streamclip, since after my selection's been saved unto the desktop it can be dragged into iMovie and edited from there. I'll be keeping Steamclip though...after all of the aggro, it seems to good to be true!
Thanks again for responding to my query. Really appreciated that you took the time.

  • I have 3 consecutive movie clips that I am trying to drop into the drop zone but it only recognizes the first one and only produces the firts one in a DVD. How can I drop all three  movie clips into one drop zone

On IDVD, I have 3 consecutive movie clips that I am trying to drop into the drop zone to create a DVD but it only recognizes the first one I dropped and only produced the first one in a DVD. How can I drop all three  movie clips into one drop zone.

I have had some luck doing the following: Export each clip from imovie as a quicktime clip. Open iDVD and create a new project. Import a few stills into iDVD and then click on the button that gets created to get into the screen where the individual slides appear. Drag each quicktime into that screen and arrange in the order you want. You can then delete the stills. The button that appeared when you dropped in the stills will launch a complete show.

  • Organizing clips into searchable database

I'm using a Mac Pro and a Sony HDR-HC3 to capture HDV of HS sports. I need a way to catalogue/database individual clips so that I can search the criteria I assign. For example: name, date, player, offense, defense, good, bad, TD, 3 point shot, steal, turn-over etc. Then after accumulating a BUNCH of clips, being able to organize them relationally and therefore be able to put together an imovie DVD of - for example: a particular player's 3 point shots; or a particular team's touchdowns...
I know this is what TV networks like ESPN do and probably spend boatloads of money for the privilige and convenience, but if anyone knows of a way that I could come close to my ideal for reasonable dollars I'd be grateful!
I've looked into iDive, iview media pro and Qpict but none of these, at least based on my research, will organize HDV in the way I described. So I'm hoping that I'm either wrong or there is someting else out there.

    Hi Obviator,
"I'm very familiar with MS Access" eeoow-!! You poor soul, you have my unfeigned condolence ;D
"Are you saying that you can sort in imovie?"No, not sort as a database would but as a place to simply import and rename the clips. You can move them around the clips panes as well. FileMaker can either read them from the iMovie project file or you can drag them out to a folder somewhere else.. this is part of the ODBC compliant thing alhough not to the true extent as it woulld not open the iMovie app, all you would be doing is creating a little routine to open the package contents of the project and read the clips from the media folder there.
AFAIR FileMaker uses the term "card file" as data entry and access points.
As I said I am not too knowledgeable in sports so forgive me if my scenarios are half baked.
In my personal experience I have found that keeping the data entry to a minimum is the best and easiest way to control and use it. Every individual piece of data should be entered only one time if a "card file" needs to display other information it should be looked up from the area where it's entry is most relevant. If you shoot a movie, from here we'll call it game, and say it has 10 clips that is all the clips you will ever have in your database for that game. Even though these 10 clips can be accessed numerous ways. i.e.. 1 league, 10 teams, 20 coaches 150 players theoretically each clip could be associated with and displayed 181 times in 181 different card files. (if every team and every plater played in every game) Basically it comes down to wether you want to deal with 10 (game) clips 181 times or 1810 clips 1 time each.
This is a simple breakdown of the card files with the basic data entry.
field names written after >is data entered in this file. Field names entered after <is data displayed in this file gathered from another file. field names are separated by a coma and anything with a * would be selected from a drop down list or menu.
Keep in mind everything in bold should be as independent of the others as possible i.e.. in a coach file you would use a team name field such as a drop down list or a self completing field that would automatically fill in the rest of the info such as school, address etc. in all the other fields from team card file.
League > geographical area <Team(s)*games, coaches, player, stats etc. (The reason why team names would not be entered here is that that may change and the list of teams may grow, new school regional changes)
Team> school name , address, playing field name, location, maps, directions etc< league, games,Team*, coach, players stats, total TD's FBLS total wins loses total season points etc
Coach> name, information pertaining to that individual only, previous team*, current team* etc. < games, players, stats,
Players > name, position, jersey number, TDs, FBLs, age team<games
Game Team*, Team*, winner* date container fields (clips)<coach, player
This is very rudimentary. Some of the fields in some of the cards are calculations i.e. total touchdowns per game per team would be information gathered from the individual players who made the TD with the sum placed in a calculation field wherever required. Keep in mind the main goal is to enter the data only one time as the more places you enter data the more room for error the touch down is most relevant information to the player who made it.
My businesses final product was graphics and technical drawing including QTVRs and QT movies of 3D computer models that would generate a large amounts of graphics/image files and the program that created them didn't have any way to organize, access and display them until about 4 years ago. The QT movies are much more "intense" as they were created by placing "cameras" throughout the models and you told it how many "frames" you wanted from point A to B and played back with a slider type control. So you could have a hundred frames and play them back in a second FM often handled them better than Movie Player/ QT player and Meander.
Did this in 2 sec. Just to show you an idea of a clip browser type window this is what your game "card file" would look like . Sorry, but I just repeated the same field and the clip starts out black. This is 5.5 remember and you can make these windows look anyway you want and here you would have other fields as well.<teams* which at this point would automatically bring in the caoches players etc all you would input is the dates and select the teams from a list. you can place buttons links ->> also note this version 5.5 on the MBPro the two are lightyears apart as this predates the G5 and movie playback and sound is clean as a whistle.

  • Palm IIIxe - Fatal Alert after HotSync; [Reset] soft button doesn't; Paper Clip just returns Fatal Alert

I'd done a HotSync and left Palm in cradle; went to work without it so called wife to have her check something for me.   She reported a MEMORY EXCEPTION error, which I've seen before, so I told her hit the soft [Reset] button offered.
She did, and it came back after the "Palm Powered" splash screen with a Fatal Alert and another soft [Reset] button.   No amount of clicking this button will reset it.
Using the paper clip reset, I loop thru the splash screen and another Fatal Alert.   Beyond that, nothing.
Here at the office, desperately needed to see some data which was on the Palm, so brought up the Palm Desktop (v4.1.0).   And was confronted with a Windows XP exception -- do you want to send an error report?     Downloaded and installed v4.1.4 from the website and Palm Desktop works again.
Makes me wonder if there's some kind of date/time issue, that would have triggerd sometime between 11/28 and 11/30, that affected both Palm Desktop v4.1.0 AND the Palm OS that I'd been running on Palm IIIxe unit (the most recent version that WOULD run on IIIxe,
insofar as far as I can tell now, with not being able to get past this Fatal Alert).
Looked for the various cited tinyurl links in this forum that point to reset documentation (hoping for the least destructive; since my last backups would have been done likely in the hotsync that was aborted), yet those links all apparently point to hosts that cannot be reached.
I LOVE my IIIxe and do NOT want to have to upgrade hardware and software for something I have to cradle and sync in order to recharge.  Give me a machine that I can replace the batteries at any 7-Eleven or Wal-Mart no matter where I travel.
    Post relates to: Palm IIIxe

Not sure what caused this but with the fatal alert message you typically need to hard reset the handheld.
If you had Palm desktop open while Windows, virus software or any apps that do updates did an update and caused the error.
Are you still getting the fatal alert message? You need to hard reset the handheld if you are.
Click on the following link to the kb.palm.com webpage for the article regarding reset procedures.

The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.
Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.
For reference purposes, click on the following link for the support page for your device on the kb.palm.com webpage.
