My toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it. I have the preferences checked to show icon and have checked utilities folder. nothing. Help!

I have a iMac, Yosemite 10.10 and my toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it!. I have the preferences checked to show icons and have looked in the utilities folder..nothing. I have also changed ports. ??

A few things to try:
1-Repair permissions and restart your computer.
2-Zap the PRAM
3-Use Software Update/App Store to update your OS to OS 10.10.3.  Also, update everything SU/AS has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • External Hard Drive is not being recognized by Firewire 400

    Hi everyone,
I update my Mac OS X (Leopard) last night, so this morning when I was going to connect my External Hard Drive (EDD) to my MacBook; the Firewire, which I normally used through Firewire 400, did not recognized my EDD. However, I tried by connecting using the USB option and it recognized the EDD working perfect. Thus, I would like to know how do I turn the Firewire 400 on/available, since it seems not being working properly.
    Thanks a lot,

    Macbook (Intel) early 2007.

if you have the power supply that comes with the external, use that if you haven't use it instead of rely on bus powered port.
connect your external, click blue apple on top left corner > about this mac > click more and on system profiler click firewire, and see if your external detected there.
You can try to reset PRAM to refresh your hardware behavior too:

  • With the new FCPX 10.1, my external hard drive is not being recognized.

Today I updated my FCPX application to 10.1, but when I plugged in my 'passport for mac' (which has all my important 500 GB projects on it)
It does not come up like it used to. I have tried to import the files as libraries, but either it doesnt work, or I am doing it wrong.

File>Upgrade Projects and Events, then take the Locate route and choose that drive.

  • Toshiba external hard drive is not seen by my time capsule

I am trying to connect an external hard drive to my time capsule, I am doing this with other hard drives and it work perfectly, but I just got a toshiba 1,5 tb drive with external power supply and my time capsule simply ignore it, it is not shown in the disk part of the airport setup screen, if I connect one of my other external drives it does show both in finder and in the airport set up screen.
I have tried to format the drive in all the different ways I could, as I read that if the partition map scheme is master boot record it may have problems, and if the drive is not formatted as either fat32 or mac OS extended it will not show. no matter what I am doing it still is not picked up by the time capsule when I plug it in.
it work perfectly if I plug it directly into my macbook. I have truly run out of ideas. I actually have two identical toshiba drives so I tried the other one to be sure it was no a problem on the first drive, but it act in the exact same manner. I tried to look at some of the hidden files, but not being a computer expert it did not make much sence to me.
    please somebody help out here.

    Hi Bob,
I would like it to appear along with the time capsule it self under shared, so when I click on the time capsule I would see two drives the time capsule and right below or above the hard drive. and I would like to be able to see it in the airport utility under disks under the time capsule in the drive screen, but the drive is not visible in either locations.
yes I have read many places that the drive need external power supply, as this drive is quite large 1,5 tb I did take one with external power supply. I do however have two other drives one 500 gb and one 750 gb without external power supply and they both work perfectly on my time capsule "plug and play" like it is supposed to, funny enough one of these drives do have the partition master scheme as master boot record even as I have seen several discussions where it is stated this would not work. on these new drives I have tried with the three different partition master schemes I have tried with mac OS extended formatting as well as FAT 32 formatting, I even formatted the drives on a windows machine to see. but it still do not appear when it is connected to my time capsule. Before my time capsule get the blame for this I have to add that I have tried on two other time capsules - though in other environments - with the same result.
so please any new idea is very appreciated.

  • External Hard Drive is not being detected

I recently purchased an iomega 1.5TB external hard drive and I cannot detect it anywhere in my computer. I can hear the device hum and start running once I connect the two, so I'm assuming there is enough power, but the computer can't see it. Please help someone!

Does it appear in Disk Utility?
Have you tried FINDER PREFERENCES>GENERAL and checked off the appropriate boxes?

  • New Seagate 1TB external hard drive is not being selected by MacBook Pro

My new Seagate 1TB external HD is not being identified by the MacBook Pro (10.7.5 Mac OSX). Whereas the same being recognized by a WIN8 OS based PC. I need a format wherby the external HD should be recognised by both Mac OS and Win.
    Kindly help.
Pls note my system is being run on safe mode, as there is a problem in the left shif key. Hence, while booting, it is automatically being shifted to the safe mode. I need to format the external HD, so that I can transfer to store my data.

If you want the drive to be able to both read and write on OS X and a Windows machine, you should format the drive as exFAT on the Windows machine. As to why the drive is not recognized when you boot into Safe Mode, that may be because the drive is formatted for another OS and it MAY BE that it's disabled when you run in Safe Mode (which disables a long list of things: see -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US).
If you format it as exFAT on the Windows machine, you MAY BE able to have it mount on your Mac. No guarantees, though.
    Good luck,

  • External Hard Drive no longer being recognized in Finder

My Seagate Ecternal Firewire hard drive was accidently unplugged a few minutes after transferring about 11gb of files to it. When I plugged it back in it is giving me the Error Message: DISK INSERTION then below that it says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." It shows up in Disk Utility but gives me no options under the First Aid Category. Is there anything I can do to get the files that were on there back? A friend told me he believes I just unplugged it while it was doing some sort of "janitorial type work" after the file transfer because no applications were running at the time that it was unplugged. I dont see why unplugging it at that time would make me lose 250+gb worth of information, and I really hope that isnt the case. If anyone can give me some tips to figure out what exactly is wrong, or a place to go/ software to use to fix it, please let me know. thankyou

Vaio wouldn't know Mac file system from a hole in the wall unless it has Mediafour's Macdrive software.
It isn't so much updating 10.3, it is more updating your Disk Warrior to match your operating system. What version of Disk Warrior do you have?
P.S. note this is the 10.4 forums for Tiger. 10.3 is Panther. Future questions regarding 10.3 should be directed to the 10.3 and earlier forums. Though I'm happy to continue to try to solve your problem here.

  • My external hard drive isn't being recognized

I have an extrenal drive I used to back up my dvds for faster viewing and the drive is going out I think. It will disconnect midway through movies, when uploading or downloading to/from it it will sometimes just disconnect itself. about 75-80% of the time its plugged in it wont show up. I can't attempt to transfer more than about 3 gigs of information or else if ejects itself, and it won't even show up in disk utility.
How can I get this crazy drive to be recognized so I can keep working on transfering the data back off it before it dies completely

OK, so are there any volumes listed for that disk in Disk Utility? And how does it not allow you to repair the disk? Is the option grayed out? Try clicking on the disk AND the volume and comparing the options for each.
    For example:
    149.1 GB FUJITSU MHW2160BHPL Media
    |- Macintosh HD
    |- disk0s3
186.3 GB Prolific PL3507 Combo Device *(On this disk…)*
    |- Time Machine *(…here is my Time Machine volume.)*
    |- Windows Extra

My Toshiba external hard drive is no longer being recognised by my Macbook Air. The light on the hard drive is on, but it won't appear on my computer's desktop or anywhere else. How can I fix this?

    Hi rivraff,
If you are having issues mounting an external hard drive volume, you may want to see if it shows up and/or can be repaired in Disk Utility; you may find the following article helpful:

  • Cannot Access Toshiba External Hard Drive On MacBook Pro

I have had this Toshiba portable external hard drive for about 3-4 years now.  It is powered through the USB port (USB 3.0 I believe, but maybe it's older and is only USB 2.0).  All of a sudden my hard drive will not show up on my Mac or PC to be accessed (on the PC it says "device descriptor request failed" and doesn't show at all).  At first I thought it was because I updated to Maverick when it was first available, but realized I had been accessing my hard drive and using time machine with it since then.  Right now there are a lot of files on this hard drive I would like access to so I do not want to format the drive at all.  Furthermore, the drive appears in disk utility and I did the verifying and repairing disk functions in disk utility and they were successful, but nothing was actually fixed.  Also, the light is constantly flickering white, sometimes it would be solid blue, but recently only flickering white.
I have also refereed to this discussion thread, however, in this person's situation their drive does not appear at all where mine actually does. The solutions provided were to try a new cable or that there is not enough power being provided from the computer through the USB cord into the hard drive.  I have never had this issue and have tried both cords made by Samsung and one from a WD My Passport.  Please let me know if I should try the powered USB hub and I will, I just don't understand why the power going to the drive changed all of a sudden since I've been using it for years.
I have already ordered a new external hard drive so I can back up my computer, but I still need the files on this hard drive.  Luckily it seems to still be alive which makes me think there is a way to get the files.  So if anyone can help me figure out a solution to this problem without losing my files that would be excellent.
Thank you.  I will try to provide you with any additional information you would like to know.

Since you can see the drive in Disk Utility, select it, go to the Restore tab, and use that to copy the data to a new drive. Note the warning on reformatting the destination drive - make sure there is no data on the new drive.

  • How to set up a Toshiba external hard drive on my Macbook Pro?

    Hi there,
I just bought a Toshiba external hard drive that says on the package it is compatible with Macs. I plugged it in, installed the Pogoplug PC for Mac (no idea what this is) and Tuxera NTFS for Mac (it was in the "Mac Driver" folder). Now what? Is my data now automatically going onto the hard drive? Do I need to install anything else? This seems too easy! What am I missing here?
    Thanks!

New hard drives out of box should be formatted for your Mac
go to DISK UTILITY and verify what it says your HD is formatted as under the "ERASE" tab
HFS+ above is the "mac format"
Format (erase) it in "mac osx Extended journaled"
AFTER THIS YOU CAN DRAG AND DROP FILES AS YOU LIKE
    To show HD on desktop
go into FINDER at top then PREFERENCES  then GENERAL tab
then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
There is no such thing as a MAC or PC hard drive,.....they can all be formatted as you wish for either PC or Mac (or both)
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive?

How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive? I'm working on transferring my music from our home computer to my new laptop and I already got all my music onto the hard drive but now, when I plug it into my MacBook Pro, it doesn't recognize it. There isn't an icon that pops up and nothing happens at all. The blue light on the hard drive that indicates that it knows it is plugged into something comes up but that's about it. Someone told me I might have to "format" it but I don't know what that means and I don't know how to do it. I just want to get my music from the hard drive to my laptop so please help!

    natgray17 wrote:
I don't know about your first question... I went to finder, preferences, then general but I didn't see anything for the hard drive.
Huh, in the Finder menu, Preferences, you will see this:
Nope, disk utility cannot see it. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but it still won't recognize it.puter that's a Mac...
If DU cannot see it then the preferences is just an academic exercise.
If this is a USB drive then as mentioned above you may need a powered USB hub since there may not be enough power from the USB to run the drive.  What else do you have plugged into the USB ports?  If there's some stuff you can unplug it then do it and see if your drive mounts.
What do you mean from a Windows machine? It's a Toshiba hard drive and I put my music on it from my home computer that's a Mac...
Which is all I wanted to know, i.e., whether the drive came from a Winows machine.  So it's been formatted and created on a mac.  Therefore it should mount on this other mac machine.  So it most likely is a power problem.

  • HT1338 I bought my macbook pro november 2011 and I still cannot use my toshiba external hard drive.  what updates do i need to get?

I don't know my operating system.  I bought it in nov of 2011.  I am trying to axcess a toshiba external hard drive.  what new update do I need to get?

You can find out your current system version by select About This Mac from the Apple menu.  To make sure it is updated, select Software Update from the Apple menu.  A Mac from Nov. 2011 is probably running "Lion," and the latest version of Lion is Mac OS X 10.7.4.
But that should not affect the connection of an external hard drive.  There are no special updates for connecting standard external drives.
Does the external Toshiba drive connect by USB port?  Is it the smaller type that gets power from the port (no conection except for the one cable), or is it larger (with its own power supply)?
