My trackpad doesn't click

I have a MacBook Pro, two days now all of a suddent my trackpad doesn't function as a normal mouse anymore, it functions only with tap functions; the sound still persists, but there is no response from the computer. Before this happened my little brother was opening and closing the lid of the lap top too often- like 4/5 times in one minute- he did this once. May this have been the reason? And how can I fix this without opening the lap top up, and/or taking it to the Apple store?
I already tried to restart the settings with the command: Command +Option+ P + R - didn't help
Thank you in advance,

Hi, I have a 10 day old Macbook Pro 13". (My first laptop, 20 years using Macs)
I read the little booklet which came in the box. Page 26 : " Using the Multitouch Trackpad..........Unlike typical trackpads, the entire Macbook Pro trackpad is a button, and you can click anywhere on the trackpad."
When I tried to click at the top, especially the corners would not click unless pressed extremely hard.
I called Apple support and explained. They ran me through a hardware re-set, then told me to take it in to a Service centre.
The Service centre replaced the Trackpad, no questions.
The new trackpad is no different.
I went into a store (shed, not Apple) and tried about 5 Macbooks on display. They were all the same.
I called Apple support and explained. (They pointed out I was just outside my phone support limit, but generously listened while I explained again. They first said to take it in to a different Service Centre. I explained the pad had been replaced, and all machines in shop were the same. They then said they'd check an actual machine.
Finally, Apple Support ( European ) stated that " the trackpad button contact area begins about 1 cm down from the top of the trackpad " apologized and promised to feed back to Apple.
I have now learnt all the touch features and hardly ever need to click the button.I think they should amend the claim made in their literature. It would have saved me a lot of aggro.

  • Yoga 13 trackpad doesn't click

It happend on the train. I was reading a book in a touch mode and when I returned to notebook mode I found out that touchpad is not clicking. Pointer follows finger moves and SynZ program shows that touchpad reads pressure, but it doesn't click at all. Not with tap, nor with left or right button.
    Is it a mechanical damage?
    Please help.

    hi there,
i have faced similar issue earlier with my 13 and the solution was re-attaching the touchpad cable to the mainboard.
if you don't have any knowledge about how to do that - because you need to be really careful, i suggest you to contact support line.

  • Help! My MacBook Pro trackpad doesn't click anymore.

It's been fine for the last almost 2 years.
I bought in in late September, early October of 2009.
I take phenonmenal care of my MacBook Pro... other than some dings here and there from taking it out of my laptop bag.
It was fine on Friday, and for most of Saturday.
On Saturday, at nightime, it began to not drag things properly sometimes... but after a restart of my computer it was fine.
On Sunday night, I lost a lot of function on my trackpad. It didn't click on the bottom left corner and couldn't drag well on the left side but the right half of the trackpad was working perfectly fine.
THEN... on Monday night (pretty much today)... I was doing a project and then suddenly clicking became difficult. Then... clicking ceased to function at all except occasionaly at the bottom middle.. or right on the edge of the right side.
I tapped on the trackpad a few times and it seemed to restore a bit of function.
Then I tapped some more and now it ceases to work for clicking at all.
I can still scroll, and move the cursor around... but I can't click.
I hate using external mice because it feels like there's a lack of control as opposed to using your fingertips.
Please help me! I don't have enough money for a new computer! I'm a student!
Thank you so much in advance.

    Try SMC reset

then clean your trackpad with a damp cloth, Keep rubbing the trackpad for about two minutes.

  • Trackpad doesn't click at login

My trackpad pairs correctly when I torn on the computer, I can drag the cursor just fine. But I am unable to click on my user icon even if the trackpad preference has the one finger click enabled.
    what's the problem?

I had the same problem.  I couldn't get the Magic Trackpad to click on the logon screen.  I had placed the TP on the arm of my couch.  The upholstery didn't provide a solid enought of a surface for clicking.  I also didn't realize the TP actually clicked.  After reading your answer, I put the TP on a table and it clicks!  Amazing!  My problem is solved.  Thanks so much!

  • The Trackpad does not clicking

hi everyone my Trackpad doesn't clicking but the touch is working any idea
    my regards

You may have a swollen battery, which is below the trackpad and puts pressure on it from underneath. If you are comfortable in opening up the bottom enclosure (if your model has builtin battery), you can examine the battery for yourself.

  • Macbook Pro trackpad taps but doesn't click.

I have a 2009 macbook pro and the trackpad taps but doesn't click. I was wondering if something can be done to fix it so the click works again without taking it in to get fixed? I am currently using a wireless mouse, which is okay but just gets annoying to use sometimes. But if anyone knows of any tricks that might make the click on the trackpad work, that would awesome!

  • Please, i bought a new track pad for my imac. it is working well when my imac is on. But, anytime i off my imac and wish to on it again, My track pad will be connected but it doesn't click i will need a mouse to log in my password first . Any help?

Please, i bought a new track pad for my imac. it is working well when my imac is on. But, anytime i off my imac and wish to on it again, My track pad will be connected but it doesn't click i will need a mouse to log in my password first . Any help?
To be specific. I have the imac late 2013 model, and i just bought the trackpad this October 2014. I have been using magic mouse without any problem. I just want to have a new experience with the trackpad.  Any time i on my imac, i will have a normal screen with my picture and a guest column at the center. I need to click either my picture or the guest in order to have the space where i can key in my password with the keyboard. But unfortunately, my trackpad will show that it is connected and the cursor will be moving in front of the screen if i touch the trackpad, but if i try to click, i will get no response. I have to put back batteries inside my magic mouse and then click on my picture if i want to log in with my id or i click on the guest image if i want to log in as a guest. it is only after this that my trackpad will start responding.
i want to use only trackpad for now so as to be more efficient with it. I don't want to be putting back batteries inside the magic mouse only to on my imac. I need a solution please.
    Thanks.

It sounds like you have assigned the primary click on the trackpad to something else, perhaps a gesture.
Use your mouse, login and then open the Trackpad preference pane and see how you have the interface configured.
Oh and you can have both the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad powered up and working at the same time. No need to keep moving batteries around.

  • Trackpad and Mouse click problem!! PLEASE HELP!

I have been having this weird problem which is having to click several times on something of it to work. Mostly I have the problem with Safari and sibelius 6.0 which I work with.It doesn't click and its frustrating.I bet its not the trackpad as I happen to have a magic mouse and it's the same with that too.I have to click several times on for example "Close" the tab button for it to work.
    PLEASE HELP!

Kirstiee, login to another User account and test it in there.
sahba99, you would need to drag the whole preference folder to the Desktop and reboot. If it works, you know it's a preference file in that folder. Keep dragging a bunch back at a time and reboot (or log out and back in) until you narrow it down to the corrupt file. It's kind of like troubleshooting an extension conflict back in the pre-OS X days.

  • Macbook white, Bootcamp 3.1, Windows 7 - trackpad doesn't work

    Hello.
I am using macbook white (bought in 2008), Mac Os X 10.5.8 (russian). I installed Windows Ultimate 7 (russian) via bootcamp, trackpad was working. Then installed Bootcamp 3.0 drivers, trackpad was working still. I installed Bootcamp 3.1, now trackpad doesn't work at all. I reinstalled Bootcamp 3.1 but It didn't help.
    Please help.

    I found the solution.
    1. Uninstall all bootcamp drivers
    2. Change language of interface in regional settings to English.
    3. Install bootcamp drivers
    4. Switch language back to Russian
Unfortunatly two-finger tap for right-click still doesn't work

  • Cannot disable trackpad 'touch to click'

Last week I installed the latest updates for my OS X Leopard Macbook (ver 10.5.8). Since then, my trackpad has been hyper sensitive and is constantly highlighting things and dragging things around when I'm just using it to scroll the cursor. I've gone into Preferences-->Trackpad and disabled "Clicking" and even "Secondary Clicking," but the problem hasn't gone away at all. It wasn't a problem at all until I downloaded those updates.
I've searched the forums for an answer to this problem but couldn't find any other than 'take it to an Apple store.' Does anyone have any thoughts about what I could try? Thanks.

I have checked for updates and it says everything is up to date. I just bought it from the apple store yesterday, so I would think once it installed, it would be all good, but not so much.
The touch to click doesn't work on the magic trackpad at all.
Are you saying that your prefences for the Magic trackpad shows all the 4 touch gestures? Mine only shows 3 finger gestures. Even under all the demonstrations for the additional gestures, it shows demos of 3 finger gestures only.
    What am I missing?
Did you check for updates while the MT was connected?
My Trackpad Prefs show 2 options under Four Finger.
I dunno that you're missing anything, but something doesn't sound right. Try clicking on the button "Set up BT trackpad" in Trackpad prefs.
If no luck, open BT prefs and remove MT. Restart MBP and add it again.

  • Trackpad hard to click even after replacing battery

    Hello,
I have a MacBook pro 2011 and I came to the point where I needed to change the battery because it was no longer holding its charge and it was pushing up on the trackpad making it hard to click. (The clicking worked/works, it is just moderately hard to click on it.) I replaced the battery and now the battery works fine just the trackpad still doesn't click properly or as easily as it should. Any sudgestions to what i should do to make it be easier to click? Any help would be great thanks!!

From what I gather pressing the button twice or holding on the button more that a couple seconds can crash the circuits. You may have to reset the logic board. Getting into a big hurry can be a disaster here. See below from the service manual.
    <hr width="200">
Many system problems can be resolved by resetting the Cuda chip (see the Symptom/Cure tables for examples). Press the Cuda reset button on the logic board to reset the Cuda chip. (The Cuda reset button is located on the back edge of the logic board between the modem port and the processor module. Refer to the Logic Board Diagram in the Basics chapter for location information.) If you continue to experience system problems, refer to “Resetting the Logic Board” later in this chapter.

Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems (see the Symptom/Cure tables for examples). Whenever you have a unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure before replacing any modules.
    1. Unplug the computer.
    2. Disconnect the cable that runs from the power supply to the power filter board on the bottom side of the logic board/mass storage chassis.
    3. Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
    4. Remove the logic board/mass storage chassis from the unit.
    5. Remove the battery from the logic board.
    6. Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
    7. Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/- direction.
    8. Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
Note: This procedure resets the computer’s PRAM. Be sure to check the computer’s time/date and other system parameter settings afterwards.

    Hi Rhondavas77,
    To enable/disable Just-In-Time debugging
On the Tools menu, click Options.
In the Options dialog box, select the Debugging folder.
In the Debugging folder, select the Just-In-Time page.
In the Enable Just-In-Time debugging of these types of code box, select or clear the relevant program types:
