My trackpad is faulty- it clicks on things I didn't even click on and acts as though I double clicked it (ie. highlighting text). Help!

I need help. Do I get it repaired or is there is any way I can fix it myself?

Jumpy Trackpad

Go step by step and test.
1. Restart
2. Clean the trackpad with moist not wet microfiber cloth.
System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click
Try turning off three finger dragging and then turning it on after  testing.
Is there any Bluetooth device nearby with failing batteries?
3. Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/ph14222
4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
   Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this continues, you may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
Best.

  • MBP Retina trackpad unable to primary click

I have a MBP Retina which is only a few months old.  The last few weeks my "primary click" function on the tackpad has only been working intermittantly. Initially, I switched it to "tap to click" and that seemed to fix the problem.  Now tap to click doesn't work either.  I can still move the curser normally.  Interesting thing is my "secondary click" works fine (ie two finger tap).  More interesting is that both my bluetooth magic mouse and trackpad have exactly the same problem (no primary click/tap but secondary works fine).  I have tried other accounts and the recovery mode and still have the same issue.  Luckily I can screen share from my wifes computer so I still have access to my files.  I called applecare and tried a few reboots holding down various keys but no help.  Applecare thinks its a harware problem but I suspect it is software as the bluetooth devices are behaving the same way.  I have already updated to the newest sotware 10.8.3.
    Any suggestions??

On the built in trackpad do you hear a audible click when you press down on the trackpad?
I think it is more of a software problem. Especially since both the built in trackpad and the magic mouse does the same thing. A hardware fault would not effect both the built in trackpad and a mouse, of any kind, the same way.
For a test do a clean install of os x on a external drive, that is a clean fresh install of os x not a copy of the install on your internal drive. Then boot the system from the external and test both the internal trackpad and MM for the same problem. If you no longer have the problem then it is software related with the install of os x on your internal drive. If you do still have the problem then it is hardware.
Only apple, or a AARC, can fix hardware problems by diagnosing the problem and replacing the part or parts that are faulty.

  • In some applications trackpad taps do not click

This is Windows 7 x64 on a MacBook Air. I have set the Trackpad options in Boot Camp Control Panel to "Tap to Click" with one finger, and "Secondary Tap" (i.e. right-click) with two fingers.
This generally works fine, except that with some software clicks do not work. It's not a random thing, they do not work at all. Moving the mouse works, but taps don't do anything at all. I can "hard-click" (until the trackpad mechanically clicks), and that works as a left-click, but I can't tap to do the same, or tap with two fingers to right-click.
I tried different USB mice, and I can change their button settings in the Control Panel, and they all work fine with all applications. This trackpad instead doesn't seem to have the usual mouse drivers or options, and however it is implemented it doesn't always work (with some applications). I am posting this in the hope that someone from Apple might notice and escalate for a fix.
    Thanks!

  • Hi, just wondering how do i get rid of viruses on my mac pro?! as soon as i go on the internet other windows pops up and the whole screen starts to play up, like it starts to click things that i didn't even click?! help please

hi i was just wondering how do i get rid of viruses?! Everytime i go on safari my computer goes all weird and starts to pop up with other internet sites without me even typing it in. My arrow also starts to click on all things that i didn't even click on and opens up apps that i didn't want?!

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not be applicable.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check for unknown or forgotten input devices. Disconnect any USB input devices that you aren't using.
    3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • My trackpad won't register clicks. How do I fix it?

As the title says, my trackpad won't register clicks sometimes.  Usually it takes a few clicks to actually do something.  It can get really annoying.  I have the latest macbookpro and latest mountain lion software.  I looked at a discussion in 2009 that states that this problem was existant back then.  I would like to know two things.  1: Is this a problem with the software or the product?  2: Can I fix it?

It's a Retina MBP? Then you do have warranty, still...

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

If I close the computer and open it back up, it sometimes stops for a little while, then will spontaneously start again. Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks!

See this knowledge base article. Also, you might want to update to 10.6.8 (don't know that that will fix your problem, but it's the latest version of Snow Leopard).

  • When I press slightly on either side of my macbook pro august 2011 trackpad or if I click the tracpad, I hear a light tick noise, sounds kinda like metal.  Anyone else have this problem? What is it?

When I press slightly on either side of my macbook pro august 2011 trackpad or if I click the trackpad, I hear a light tick noise, sounds kinda like metal.  Anyone else have this problem? What is it?

It's a spring-loaded grounding contact between the top case/chassis and the bottom pan of the machine. When you press, it scratches against the inside of the bottom pan and makes the sound. It's completely harmless and doesn't indicate that anything is wrong, but it can be slightly annoying. A visit to a Genius Bar may result in quieting it partially or completely.

  • My mouse and trackpad arent responding the click on finder, i can use multitouch but not 1 touch. Aswell when i go to the findertab at the bottum with the mouse, app icons Does Not expand.

My trackpad is responding the click on finder, i can use multitouch but not leftclick/1 click/touch. Aswell when i go to the findertab at the bottom with the mouse, app icons Does Not expand. I had no problems with it before, but I'm very confused.

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee

  • My Magic Trackpad won't stop clicking EVERYTHING!

I bought a Magic Trackpad around last year in May, and suddenly it started clicking everything! It randomly settles down, but when I maneuver the mouse around the screen it starts clicking and highlighting everything. Has that happened to anyone else? I'm not sure what's wrong with it. Can it be fixed or is it now completely useless and do I have to throw about $70 away and get a new one?

    A quick fix for you to try;
If you have an iPhone in the room, turn it off.
My trackpad was going mental clicking by itself, I turned off my iPhone (4) and trackpad behaves normally.
Been watching a movie now for an hour and no 'magic' clicks.
This just seems FAR too ridiculous to be the problem, but would be interesting if a few of you guys could give it a try also.

Not at this time. It would also be great to have an adjustment for sensitivity too.

  • Trackpad not registering hard clicks since 10.6.4 update

My trackpad cannot register "hard" clicks now after the 10.6.4 update. I can use the touch-sensitive trackpad functions without depressing the pad, but that limits my usage. For some apps, I want to press down the pad, instead of tapping it lightly. I have to press it down several times just to get it to respond. I think the culprit here is the 10.6.4 update or the update to the trackpad.
I recently erased my hard drive and installed 10.6.1. With 10.6.1, it was still working fine. The problem with the trackpad started when I updated to 10.6.4.
    Any help out there?

I would post over in the MacBook Pro forums:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=190
where those gurus hang out. You could also stop down to an Apple store or AASP if available.

  • Does Your Trackpad Ever Do This Very Annoying Thing?

My cursor sometimes behaves as if I have the trackpad's button pressed down, when I don't. So for instance, I will simply move the cursor and it will drag a window, or highlight text, a move a link from one place to another, without me even holding down the trackpad. This is incredibly frustrating. Does anybody know how I can make it behave normally again? It seems to be a matter of luck at the moment.
    Thanks,
    Adam

Under syst preference see trackpad options. Look at the *One Finger* options you have checked. Hope this solves your problem.

  • My performance is very slow when I run graphs. How do I increase the speed at which I can do other things while the data is being updated and displayed on the graphs?

I am doing an an aquisition and displaying the data on graphs. When I run the program it is slow. I think because I have the number of scans to read associated with my scan rate. It takes the number of seconds I want to display on the chart times the scan rate and feeds that into the number of samples to read at a time from the AI read. The problem is that it stalls until the data points are aquired and displayed so I cannot click or change values on the front panel until the updates occur on the graph. What can I do to be able to help this?

It may also be your graphics card. LabVIEW can max the CPU and you
screen may not be refreshing very fast.
