See Pondini's TM FAQs, for details. IIRC, bad move to manually remove stuff from TM.
Totally agree. NEVER EVER EVER manually delete stuff from a TM. Right click and delet the backup from WITHIN the TM app. If you cna "put back" stuff you inadvertently deleted, try that, but you may have to reformat your TM and start over.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

Just the Option key. Third from the left on the bottom row.
If that does not work, try the more elaborate steps described here:

That's because you can't delete it directly from the phone.
Since you synced not imported those pictures to your iphone using iTunes, you will need to do the opposite and unsync the pictures, in order to remove it from your phone.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • IPhoto Trash can is not getting empty.

I am trying to use iPhoto trash can method.  just click on emtpy trash can.  But it is not working. Recently, I cleaned up my library, and deleted about 13k photos.  When I click empty, shows status bar, and it appears stucked.  I need to force out iPhoto to realize, after restarting it again, that about 100 photos are deleted in about one hour.
I have tried the sudo rm -R methods but they work only for the system trash can.  Is there any command line I can use to empty really fast the iPhoto one?  There is a lot of wasted space and I have no idea how to recover it.
    Thank you.

IPhoto can not empty that large a trash
Open the trash and select all. Make a album with them, right click on the photos selected in the trash and return to the library. Then using the album delete in batches of 100 or so emptying the iPhoto trash for each batch

  • Files will not empty from trash, causing "errors"

Okay, I know this has been covered, but nothing is working. I have 3 macs, the one in question is a Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8). There are files in the trash that won't empty. They are from external drives that no longer exist. Every time I empty trash, I get "file in use" error, and I continue. Now, new issue, I have added files to trash (from external drive) and it wont empty either (this is usb thumb drive, FAT 32, still exists, is inserted and showing in finder). First, are these actually starting to clog up my system drive, or are they just broken pointers, no real size? Second, why can't I just reset trash and get rid of them. I have been dealing with this for over a year, and it is getting worse. The external drives that started the issue no longer exist, they have been reformatted. What do I do. There must be a way to rebuild the trash. I am an "under the hood" guy, is there a way to see where they are hidden and just manually remove them? Please help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich
