My Treo 800W Story

I put quite a few posts in thread
PALM TREO 800 W - Connection with PC
that relates to this thread.
I've been struggling with my Treo 800W for about 25 days now.  I like the feature set, and would be very happy, if it worked correctly.  I have a pretty long list of problems.  They all seem to be resolved when I turn off bluetooth.  There appears to be some sort of wild writer in the bluetooth 800W code (hopefully software, not hardware) which corrupts memory.  My main symptoms are that my phone gets the crazies after 12 or 24 hours: performance is very sluggish, screen won't lock, buttons are either ignored or extremely sluggish, LCD backlight turns on spontaneously when phone is locked thus draining battery quickly, device errors generating dump to MS, Active Sync troubles, incorrect Today Screen info.  I've stopped using bluetooth and find that phone no longer suffers from these maladies, since yesterday.  I really need a longer test period, but I'm nearing the end of my 30 day return period.
I don't see any recourse but to return the phone.  I've had quite a few Palm phones and bluetooth has always been a sore spot (with the exception of the Centro -- most solid phone I ever had).
8/27/2008: Also, wonder if problem that Treo 800W will not remember volume adjustment relates to this: is it writing volume in wrong place?
Another item: I installed the voice command update.  On the Palm web site it said it would appear in the "Remove Program" list if it installed correctly -- it's not in the list.  Maybe I'll get around to doing a hardware reset and try bluetooth again.
8/28/2008: Did hardware reset, reloaded apps, etc.  Did not install the voice command update.  Previous iteration of this was my first time with Windows Mobile, so I did many strange things, sampling apps, uninstalling, etc.  This time everything was clean, no uninstalls (yet).  My Treo 800w has been running fine now, except not remembering bluetooth volume, for about 26 hours, which is quite an improvement.  For Bluetooth volume, I notice that screen graphic does actually remember where the volume was set, but you must increase volume on handset to get actual volume to match the Treo 800w volume screen graphic.
8/30/2008: Treo 800W has been running fine for nearly 4 days now.  Have not installed voice command update.  Had 1 Torch Mobile Iris browser crash this  morning which generated "Send crash info to MS", the sending of which always seems to fail - it locked up my 800w - had to do software reset.  So summary is: I'm very happy with Treo 800W, but would like to see bluetooth volume problem fixed.  I don't think I care about voice command, so will not risk installing it; I have no idea if it was related to my earlier troubles.
9/1/2008, 4PM: My Treo 800W went nuts again.  Screen would not lock when told, multi-colored vertical lines on screen seemingly indicating a refresh rate problem -- which could be cleared by hitting screen unlock button, screen spontaneously lights up.  I turn off bluetooth via wireless manager and remaing 800W functions work fine.  I am not aware of having done anything odd (have not uninstalled any apps).  I had done a desktop sync earlier in the day.  The Iris web browser has crashed a couple of time, maybe around 8/30/2008, so I don't this as a likely reason.
Have other people been experiencing this?  Do I have bad hardware?  Please advise.
9/6/2008: Stopped using Iris browser (BETA version where they gave a fair warning) -- no more troubles (yet) with 800W, except pesky volume control on bluetooth.
9/22/2008: I think Iris worked so much better than WM IE that it encouraged me to load larger pages.  I tried to pull down a large page (something from Wikipedia) the other day.  IE stalled.  Shortly thereafter my Treo 800W started going goofy.  I rebooted and it's now fine. So, maybe the Iris browser was not so much at fault.  I guess there's not much address space protection in WM.  I guess I'm still trying to learn the fine line you're supposed to walk with these devices.

I have been expericiming a simliar issue as gr8. Like him, for Bluetooth volume, I notice that the screen graphic does actually remember where the volume was set, but in actual the Bluetooth volume is not at the sound level the screen graphic shows. I must adjust the volume on the handset (or headset) to get audible volume to match the Treo 800w in-call volume screen graphic. This is shown by even if the volume is all the way up on one Bluetooth call, on my next call the actual volume is low, so experimenting I pressed the volume decrease button on my headset and the actual volume increases and the screen graphic volume displays the second highest level notch (while on the previous call it was set at the highest). This is consistent on two Bluetooth headsets, a plantronics explorer and my new Jawbone 2 on outgoing and incoming calls.  It's very inconvenient to have to manually adjust your Bluetooth volume to a higher level on every call. It's only comforting to see that people are having this issue with various Bluetooth devices so it doesn't appear to be a device issue, probably either with the Bluetooth software or registry. Hopefully Palm (or a hack) addresses this annoyance.

  • Cannot send email from Treo 800w

I just bought a new Treo 800 yesterday from Sprint.  I have set up my home email, and I can receive messages fine, but I cannot send them.  I have been into the store, they cannot figure it out.  I had a Blackberry before this and I could send and receive my cox.net email with no problem.  I have set the account up 5 times at least, but still cannot send or reply to anything.  HELP!

I recently started having the not being able to send but receive works fine problem. I finally got fixed when I checked the "Outgoing Server Requires Authentication" box in your email Account options.
The weird thing is I had checked that box in my initial setup and then a couple days ago my email started acting up. I deleted the account and set it up again as new.

Did you have your outoing mail server set to a Sprint server? In that case, you will need to change it to another one. Have you tried the SMTP server associated with your POP or IMAP mail account? If it's a common provider, folks here might know the settings. Otherwise, you will need to get them from your service provider.

  • Treo 800w Antenna Adapter

Where in the Hell can I get an antenna adapter for my Treo 800w?  Even Palm doesn't list the accessory.
Sprint coverage in my area is terrible and I cannot use the phone without an external antenna.
    Thanks.

I'm not aware of any external antenna for the Treo 800w. I suppose someone has improvised one and posted about it somewhere in cyberspace.
Sprint would be happy to sell you an Airave femtocell to funnel your calls through your internet connection. Only useful at home, though.
Have you tried forcing roaming? Usually this will get you on Verizon's network. You can try it here:
Start > Settings, Personal tab > Phone, Services tab > Roaming > "Network selection: Roaming networks only"
The downside is, no 3G when roaming (at least not in my experience). But you may have better luck with calls, at least.

  • Treo 800w coonversion from Palm Tungsten C HELP!

I have a Palm pilot tungsten c and just bought a new smartphone Treo 800w. I am hoping to convert the data over but the Treo uses Microsoft Outlook and the Palm pilot is Palm OS. I have a MAC and use the Palm software on it successfully. The Treo appears to be Windows with Microsoft Outlook. Can I merge all this stuff together or not????? I do have a Windows partition on my MAC but would rather just go MAC if possible. Thanks for any help you can offer!!!! Bird

Thank you! I have installed HotSync on both the MAC and Windows partitions of my MAC. I don't have Outlook on my computer currently. It am a little surprised that the software didn't come with the phone, but that is beside the point. Since I want to eventually run this on the MAC partition, should I get the trial version of Outlook for the PC partition to get this going and buy Outlook for the MAC?? SOrry to keep bugging you. • Is there an Adobe Reader for Treo 800w?

I have a factory installed "Picsel viewer"  program on my Treo 800w. It is weird to work with and not really user friendly to me.  Is there a free Adobe Reader, like one used on big computers, that works well with the Treo 800w by Sprint? thanks

I went to freewareppc and did a search for you - "PDF reader".
It came up with many free programs, but I haven't used any of them and can't recommend any.

  • Treo 800w (Sprint) Won't Get Past Windows Mobile Screen

I've tried everything I can think of, soft reset just gets me to the Windows Mobile screen, won't get past that.  Battery has a full charge, at least according to the status light.  Kind of dead in the water.  Any ideas?  Appreciate any help that's offered, thanks.
Post relates to: Treo 800w (Sprint)

    Hello!
Hmmmm stuck on the load screen eh, stuck on the green screen?  If the soft reset, taking the battery out for a few sec and back in, does not work then the hard reset is the next option.  Unfortunately Windows Mobile does not have a safe mode like the ones found on PalmOS devices.  Unfortunately the hard reset will erase all data but that would not be an issue if you have been syncing the phone or using Sprite Backup provided on the ROM.

  • Volume icon in the Title Bar of my Treo 800w?!

I don't know completely how to explain this, but here it goes:
I have a Palm Treo 800w for Sprint. Yesterday, I looked at my phone (that I've had for 3-4 months now) and noticed a symbol that I've never seen in Title Bar on the right-hand side. It was an icon for volume, except it provided more(and simpler) options for volume. When you click on it, it showed the volume levels you could choose, but you could also select On, Off, or Vibrate. I went to look at the icons provided in the User Guide, but it wasn't any of them. ALSO, this icon in the Title Bar replaced where my battery icon usually would go.
Anyways, my phone died, and when I turned it back on, it resumed to normal and didn't show the icon anymore. I like that icon, so I looked all around on my phone and read the user guides, but found NOTHING! Please help me if you can!

Post relates to: Treo 800w (Sprint)

Sometimes after you use the media player (and under other equally unpredictable circumstances) the volume/speaker icon replaces the battery icon. I don't think I've ever clicked it, so I don't know whether it's functions are duplicative of an equally convenient icon.
Since most people are much more concerned about their battery life, every post I have seen here on this was a complaint about the change rather than a request for it.
Anyway, I don't think there is any built-in way for users to change the icons on that bar. There might be third party software or registry edits to do it; that would require more research.

  • Treo 800w doesn't work as good as I expected...even on simplest things. Can anyone help?

    To whom it may concern:
My new Treo 800w doesn't search for name in my contacts when I text message; will always say "matching...".  So as of now, I have to look up my contacts as if I was going to call someone and instead of calling I'd select "send text message".  Also, I've recently purchased an sandisk 8gb SDHC card and my treo doesn't see the card inserted but shows my 2GB SD card.  And... MY BATTERY SUCKS!  With wifi and Bluetooth off, and even clearing all applications with Task Manager.  Anyone know of a fix?

Got mine a week ago and I like it.  Contacts should be really easy if you're using the "lookup field" (has a picture of a dude holding a giant phone)  I type letters of the name and it searches both first and last names.  You might check to see if you're listing your contacts by name or by company.
2nd on your memory card... check to see if it's formatted.  I've seen some cards not work properly until formatted when I worked for a GeekSquad.
3rd - my battery was terrible the first two days I had it cause I couldn't stop fiddling with it.  Try draining it completely (or as close as you can stand) and then charging to 100% a few times.  sometimes those batteries need to "stretch their legs!"

  • Treo 800W Can't get email from desktop outlook b/c no exchange server or web-based email

Help... I used to use the "personal business connection" from Sprint before they discontinued using it last fall to get my email.  They housed it on their server by having it sink with my desktop outlook 2000 in real time, then my device (Treo 800w) would sink with their server so that I could respond to email on my treo and it would look the same in my desktop outlook as it did on my treo.  It would show messages read that i had read, and my sent treo messages would appear in my desktop outlook sent folder.  Since Sprint has discontinued "business connection-- personal", I have not been able to get my email in the same fashion.  I don't have an exchange server at work and use POP3 email but it is not a commercial service like yahoo or gmail.  I download my email to my outlook and primarily use outlook on my desktop but want to be able to use my treo to view and respond to email on the fly and have it show the messages I have already addressed in my desktop outlook.  Any ideas?  I am desperate and very frustrated that Sprint discontinued business connection.  Every application I have looked at either required an exchange server or that I house all my email on a web-based site and quit using my desktop outlook.   Thanks....

Yes, I was very bummed when Sprint discontinued BCPE.
SEVEN Networks, the company that made BCPE for Sprint, has several new products available under beta. None of them seem to offer exactly what we had with BCPE. In fact, one forum posting says that our style of usage (sync'ing directly with the data stored in the Outlook data file) was never actually a supported configuration. Anyway, you can sign up for the beta here if you want to explore the new options: http://community.seven.com/main.php

For the last few weeks my treo 800w has been having random problems with shutting off and then not wanting to boot or requiring a hard reset to boot again. It now won't boot even doing the hard reset procedure. Also the led doesn't come on when it is plugged in anymore. It comes up to a blue screen with small white boxes in the upper left when it comes on after trying the hard boot. Any ideas what went wrong with it ?

Hi:  I can't send email using my treo 800w (sprint).  I can successfully receive email using my university's incoming IMAP server, but not send email via their  outgoing server. The treo responds "The message could not be sent.  Check that your account informat is correct"
I've configured the outgoing server correctly, on the treo,  per the universty's instruction page, http://www.ecs.umass.edu/index.pl?id=3716, and   I have tried all permutations of outgoing server settings in the treo's email setup.
I can sucessfully receive and send email via these servers using Thunderbird on a PC.

Most servers reject remote connections to use their outgoing mail servers in order to control spammers.
You need to use Sprint's smtp server for outgoing mail.
This Palm KB article explains:  http://portal.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/31747_en.html
Sprint PCS Before setting up your email account, you'll need to set your PCS Vision Email password. If you haven't already done this, go to MyPCS on the Sprint PCS website and login. Select "My Personal Information." Under "Passwords," to the right of PCS Vision User Name, select "Modify." You'll see your Sprint PCS email address; remember this address. Go back to My Personal Information. Under PCS Vision User Name, to the right of PCS Vision Password, select "Modify." Create a new password. Note: When you do this, your PCS Vision password will be reset on your smartphone. Make sure you're in an area of coverage.

I've tried going back into the gmail account setting (on the device) and re-entering the password and it worked for a while (like 1 day) then started giving me that message again..  A more permanent fix for me required deleting the gmail account and setting it up again.. Pain in my but that was.. A better fix might be to return the device or throw it off a building..
