My troubles with Drobo (2nd Gen.)

Hey everyone. I wanted to put my experience here so that people could chip in and learn/share.
For the past five months I had been having with my Drobo (2nd Gen with 2 FW800s and USB 2.0). It came bundled with 2x 1 TB WD drives. I set it up using Drobo Dashboard and for a time, everything was good in my data world.
Then two things happened around the same time: Added a 1.5 TB drive to my Drobo and I added a password to secure disks for my Time Machine. Shortly after my computer was no longer able to access my Drobo data via Finder. Drobo Dashboard would still report to me on it's status. Aperture would save the vaults, iTunes would play music from the drive but I could not access the data through Finder, only with Terminal was I able to move, copy, and open/delete files.
So what should I do but I try different cables, I try both FW ports on the Drobo and even resort to using USB from the Drobo to my computer. Issue remains.
So I figure what the heck and I plug my Drobo via USB into my Time Capsule, it had worked before for me so let's see... "WHAT!?" I could see the files in folder... "AMAZING!!!" But wait, ***!? I move from the Drobo Directory back to my user directory and try to go back and I can't. It shows me that horrible site of the Drobo just as bad Alias. Double clicking it has Finder offer to fix the alias but alas that doesn't work just like I knew it wouldn't.
I unmount the Drobo and retry going to Network>Time Capsule> Drobo and BAM! Finder sees the files again, but I change directories and hit 'Back' and now the Drobo is a bad alias again... "Darnit!"
This is starting to agitate me but being comfy with unix I survive, every day I hate plugging in the Drobo because I won't have that GUI-ease any more. Months pass and having contacted Drobo, Apple, tech-savy friends I get nowhere.
Then one day I try plugging my Drobo into my PowerMac G4 and the Drobo works fine there. (This is where I should've gotten my first clue). So I try to have my MBP access the Drobo through Network> PMG4>Drobo and "Hooray" it is there again... but I am still not out getting beers of celebration. So I change directories and go back and darn I have the same alias issue.
So now I see that my MBP can access the files via a Network connection 'one-time only' and other than that my other system works fine with it. My cousin brings his MBP over and we test it out, it is perfect on his system. He can access the files, change directories from Drobo to his system and back again all day long, it is perfect... This is puzzling me to no end.
I talk to one of my great friends who has the in with all issues with the 'good' companies. He mentions a possible bad Symlink and that gives me fuel to start my hunt for a resolution. Months go by and I get no where.
This is destroying my tech-esteem, myself who is a AASP server guy and general S.M.A.R.T.-@$$. So I reach out again to my pals in various tech fields and no progress is made other than I learn a few more terminal commands.
Well two weeks ago I say, "screw it!" and I start copying my Drobo data off to my other drives and spend the following 5 days copying things via Terminal from the Drobo to 3 different drives. At one point of the copy I tell terminal to "sudo cp -rfv /Volumes/Drobo /Volumes/Extra Drive " and you won't guess what happened within 30 seconds I was not able to access that drive via Finder though Terminal was still copying data just fine. So I stopped Terminal with Cmd+. and removed the invisible files that it had copied and then the Drive was good again in Finder... So changed my cp command and only did the two visible folders that mattered to me. Finder was still happy... (HINT!)
I finally have my Drobo empty and things set aside and I figure that this time I won't use Drobo Dashboard to format it. So I go over to Disk Utility to reformat it. It fails! So this is where I get lucky and hit myself in the head because it never dawned on me to think about the limit of the Apple Partition Map (2 TBs). I knew a long time ago that APM didn't like being formatted for more than 1 TB and 2 TB was out of the question. So I have Disk Utility reformat the drive for GUID. It works but there is a problem, Drobo Dashboard says that data is still on the Drobo.
Okay Drobo Dashboard, I'll play your game. So I go through the set up assistant and figure out what happened (maybe). I think what originally happened is when I got the Drobo I set it up to be a 1 TB volume so Drobo Dashboard just set it to APM by default. So when I added the other 1.5 TB drive in months later, rather than just making that 1.5 drive a 1 TB image drive it went crazy with it and went halfway with APM and GUID structures. I say it that way because since it was my MBP that was plugged in with the Drobo originally the Symlink between my Drobo and MBP was different that other peoples units. <I'll interject right here will quick and add that in the 5 months of my Drobo not working with my computer I had 3 new hard drives, 5 fresh installs, and a new logic board. I even tried to triage the /dev folder for issues and that turned up nothing>
So I took a second and revisited Drobo's latest updates and manuals and so I set up my Drobo to be 16 TBs in size though it has only 2x 1 TB and a 1.5 TB drive. Drobo Dashboard set up the unit to be GUID, erased the ghost data that had lingered from Disk Utility and things were fine. Finder was finally working again so I copied over my system's User folder to the Drobo and it worked fine, navigation was GUI again and for 30 minutes I tested everything. I hope that with this out there other people can learn from my time and trials. Please don't hesitate to comment or question me. I'd be happy to help and/or go into more detail.
Quick side note though. Drobo should've seen this at the very get go had they asked better questions and actually looked at the screen shots I submitted to them of Finder, Drobo Dashboard, Disk Utility and more. The fact that Drobo doesn't give you the APM/GUID option during the walk through (and them smartly disabling it for people who go over 2 TBs is stupid on their part as well IMO). Thanks for reading and good luck to you and your data!

There are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above:
Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library: Loading songs onto iPod automatically
However as she is going to use her iPod on another computer she would need to set her iPod to manual update:
Using iPod with Multiple computers
Managing content manually on iPod

    help

Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Could it be this:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

  • Do New Earphones work with the 2nd Gen Shuffle?

So my dog chewed up my 2nd Gen Ipod Shuffle earphones and I wanted to replace them. When I went to the the apple online store they are only selling the new earphones for the 3rd Gen Shuffle, that has a remote and a mic. It only says it supports the 3rd Gen Shuffle. Would I still be able to hear music on the new earphones? I don't really care about the remote and mic capabilities.
Here's the link to the 3rd Gen Earphones:

  • I'm having problem networking a Yamaha home theatre amp with vTuner (net radio) with my 2nd gen Time Capule. I only occasionally connect.

I'm having problem networking a Yamaha home theatre amp with vTuner (net radio) with my 2nd gen Time Capule. I only occasionally connect.

Remember everything outside Apple uses SMB type network protocol, not AFP..
That means all your names have to be SMB compatible.. ie
TC name, wireless names, hard disk name..
They must be short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Explain how the whole network is connected.. which is the main router.. ?
How is TC2 connected to TC1?
What mode is it running in?

  • Blue Screen of Death with Nano 2nd gen

We just got a 2nd gen Nano 8GB for xmas and everytime we connect it to our PC it gives the Blue Screen of Death and then reboots. The codes it gives with the BSOD are as follows:
    Stop: 0x00000050 (0xfffffff0, 0x00000000, 0x8044e86f, 0x00000000)
    PAGEFAULT_IN_NONPAGEDAREA
    *Address 8044E86F base at 80400000 DateStamp 45069e6e ntoskrnl.exe
    Beginning dump of Physical Memory
Operating system is Win2k and it does this regardless of iTunes being installed on the computer or not. I have another older PC running Win2k Server and the iPod is recognized on that PC but iTunes won't load on that PC for some reason (I'm thinking it's not compatible with Win2k server?) I'm not sure if the PC that gives the BSOD has USB2.0 on it if that matters. My other MP3 player (ZenMicro Photo) works fine on the same USB port I'm using to plug the iPod into.
    Any help is appreciated

If the iPod is working on your gf's laptop then it's not (likely) the iPod. That blue screen you are getting is a Windows issue. Do you have warranty support still active on your computer? My mom recently had the dreaded blue screen and Dell was able to send her a packet of disks (Windows XP and other discs) that were needed to get things back straight. It did not make her loose any data either so she didn't have to do a full restore on the system.

  • Get Pinwheel with 1st & 2nd Gen IPod Shuffle

I run ITunes 7.0.2. Last week I've been getting that wonderful "Pinwheel" everytime I connect my shuffle. I bought the 2nd Gen Shuffle and I get the same Pinwheel at connection, download and ejection. Eventually, after about 3 minutes or so, the Pinwheel disappears and everything seems fine.
When I bought the new 2nd Gen device, I downloaded some of my songs and it started downloading very very slowly with the appearance of the Pinwheel between some of the download sequences. I've never had the Pinwheel show up during any downloads.
When I eject using the little arrow icon to the right of my IPod device, the Pinwheel shows up for about 2-3 minutes, disappears and my device ejects.
What is going on? Anybody know how I can fix this?
    Thanks.

Sounds more like System than Shuffle problems. You might get it sorted with a simple logout (via the Apple Menu) to a Restart, or might need to Repair Permissions, or might need to run some of the maintenance scripts.

  • Big trouble after updating 2nd gen. Nano (8GB) to firmware v1.1.1

I bought my new 2n gen Nano (8GB) today at the airport and initially it worked fine with itunes 7.1. However, when I got to the hotel and connected to the Internet it asked me to upgrade to v1.1.1... I said yes, the update process finished without any errors but all I can see now is a blank screen. I tried everything (5Rs) and more but to no reveal. Now I would like to revert back to v1.0.3 but I don't have the files (.ipsw) in my \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates directory anymore.
Has anybody an idea of where to get these file???

Unfortunately, it is very rare for an actual employee to come on the forum (despite the legend showing an icon for users to be able to identify Apple Employees when they do post). Most of us are users that try to help each other out.
Sorry you're having trouble with your iPod. I've said this before (and hope to be able to keep saying it) but I haven't had any of the problems people have had with the new iPods except for the issue with smart playlists that initially existed but was fixed with the 3rd firmware update released. iTunes 7.0 and later has been an interesting pain though...but still I've been pretty luck with that too. Only odd thing I had happen was it kept sending me to the Japan store (which actually had some pretty cool music! Just sucked that I couldn't purchase it since iTunes was smart enough to know I was a US customer!). Hope things work out for you soon!

  • Need Immediate Help with iBook 2nd Gen

Hi, I have what I think is a 2nd Gen iBook. It is Graphite. It has a firewire port, but it is shaped like a clamshell. I bought it in 2000 and it was updated in 2001, with increased memory. I really enjoy playing an online video game called RuneScape. I tried to log on earlier, to no avail. It brought up the homepage, except the fullpage didn't load. I would really like to be able to relax and enjoy playing the game, but knowing next to nothing about Mac computer programs. Any help would be greatly apprectiated. Thanks. -Grant

    Hi Grant -
You can try updating your system to 9.2.2 by downloading these updates (starting with 9.1) in sequential order...
    http://pure-mac.com/appud.html#macos91
This will upgrade your Java programing and may allow you to run that game in your browser.
As for browsers, after you get OS 9 updated I suggest downloading this Mozilla version ...there's a good chance it will run better than the Internet Explorer you have. Clicking this link will start the download...

  • Big problem with ipod 2nd gen

My ipod will show up on the computer or itunes. It is 4 years old and may now be a paper weight. Last night it had new music put on it and was working fine. When i put it back on its dock (it has to stay docked due to battery issues)and nothing. =( Its buddy (ipod 3rd gen)had the same work done and it works and it DOES show up on the computer and itunes.
Can someone help me jumpstart my paperweight or is my dino dead? (2nd gen is dino 3rd gen is half dino)

It may have gone into total battery failure. Try resetting it while it is connected to your computer. If no go then you might want to put a new battery in it.

  • Trouble syncingiPod Nano (2nd gen) with Windows

I recently lost the ability to sync my iPod. It might have started after iTunes was updated to 8.1, but I'm not sure.
I've tried everything. Resetting, uninstalling & reinstalling iTunes, new cord, etc. When I try to RESTORE the iPod, it just hangs for a couple of hours with no apparent progress.
It doesn't show up in Windows as a device. The USB port works with other devices.
    Help

i have the same problems, exept mine doesnt even show up on the computer and open itunes and sync, it just does nothing or says "USB not recognised"
i've updated the drivers and still no solution, lso done all of the above
the weird thing is the USB's are also ment to be USB 2.0 but have never realised they are (when it did work it would say that it can perform faster by connecting to a 2.0 port no matter what port it was plugged into)
    Please help

  • Remote App doesn't work with iPod 2nd Gen or iPhone 3G

I have been using till recently the "Remote" app to control a Apple Express base station from an iPod 2nd Generation (and it also would work from iPhone 3G. It worked great.
Today, I noticed that it is not working. I am getting a message that says the the update of the App is no longer compatible with the iPod or the iPhone that I was using.  Both of them are running Version 4.2.1
Does anybody know anyway to get the iPod 2nd generation or the iPhone 3G to be compatible with the "Remote" app?  Is there anywork around.
My teenager loved to be able to control the tunes in his room with one of these devices.
I appreciate any advice or help you can offer.

    Maybe:
Remote app for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch can't connect to iTunes or Apple TV
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1947
If you have a copy of the Remote app in your iTunes library that is compatible with your iPod delete the app from your iPod/iPhone and sync the app to yur device.
If not, delete the version in you iTunes library and transfer/copy the app to your iTunes library by
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
There is no way to the later version on your devices.

  • TS1363 Once again having trouble with my 6th gen nano not being recognized in ITunes on my Windows 8 computer

Can't decide if the nightmare called Windows 8 is the culprit.  I'm reinstalling ITunes (for the 2nd time on this PC) and re-downloading all of my music to my computer. Hopefully I can get the new songs I purchased to show up on my IPod.  If not, time to go back to my 1997 discman.

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62 and Windows 8.1.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • Honda Accord 2010 with Touch 2nd Gen and Spotify

    Hi!
I've got Honda Accord 2010 (Europe version). I've connected iPod touch 2nd generation to it (with latest iOS for it ~4.2.1 or whatever) and I've downloaded Spotify for it which works ok. Problem is that whenever I connect it in USB mode (Apple Accessory), no music is played nor I can choose Spotify to play (just info that iPod is in accessory mode) and computer says that "something unauthorised something" and nothing plays. When I connect it with "jack" everything works but I've got no controls over the player, just the volume. I would like to use it with USB due to my convenience and safety (changing or stopping music takes hands off the wheel). Does it happen to newer devices as well? I'm going to get iPhone 5S for myself this Christmas and I don't want to be let down by this. Thanks guys!

Does Honda say it it works via USB with a 2G iPod with 4.2.1?
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod and the car cable-end for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset the car system
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
