My turn to post a question, USB Flash drive hard lock issues

So not sure if anyone here will be able to help me. Maybe someone from GS has run into this issue, or someone with tech experience can help. The following is from my post on another forum:
This issue has really been bugging me. For the last year I've been having an issue with every version of Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7). When I insert a flash drive the system will work just fine. When I move a single large file to a flash drive it'll work fine, when I move small files or read small files from a flash drive my entire system hard locks.
Everything freezes, I hit reset, it asks if I want safe mode, then back to the desktop. There are no errors in the error logs. Reliability monitor doesn't show any related issues.
Being of a technological nature I booted into Ubuntu. Everything works perfectly. Put the drive on my hackbook, and everything worked perfectly. OS X, worked perfectly. Tried it on my girlfriend's Vista laptop, worked perfectly.
This issue happens with anything that is detected as a portable storage. It happens with my memory card reader, my flash drives (sandisk, pny, kingston and sony) as well as with my sandisk sansa and iriver mp3 players, but when I set those up as MTP devices they work perfectly.
I have enabled and disabled legacy USB support, re-installed with slipstreamed SP1, xp sp3, vista ultimate without sp1, and the most recent beta of windows 7. Every time I figured it was related to some other USB device, but it's not. Last night I reloaded Vista (without a service pack) and before I installed anything I put a flash drive in and tried transferring some files to it. Hard lock, no other USB devices plugged in, let alone installed.
Specs:
AMD Athlon 6400+
MSI K9A Platinum
2GB Corsair XMS2
9600 GSO 512MB
This is a major inconvience. Putting files on a flash drive should be the easiest thing in the world, not something that should force me into a different OS. Please help!

You're welcome.
According to MSI's website, there are multiple ways to flash the BIOS.  Here are the links to their documents on the alternatives.
How to flash the BIOS CD
How to flash the BIOS Flash Drive
How to upgrade BIOS using MSI LiveUpdate Utility
This page shows all of the BIOS updates available for download for the K9A Platinum.  Probably best to go with the latest release.
I don't have any MSI products but it looks like LiveUpdate might be the easiest since it works from inside the operating system.  If that will not work for you then I would use CD.  They're easy to make bootable following the guide above.
Hope this helps you.

  • How to boot from usb flash drive on Satellite A500-o25

How do you configure boot order on A500-o25 so that it boots from usb drive first.

    Hi,
Enter the Bios, pressing F2 on startup, go to the Boot menu and choose Usb drive as the first boot device (you navigate with F5 and F6 keys). Press F10, and ..Save and Exit menu ,, appears, press ok. That's all.
Note, on my satellite A500, I have to connect the Usb flash before to turn computer on, otherwise the usb flash drive doesn't appear in boot menu in Bios

  • Follow up question on recovery data on USB flash drive

HP instructions say the 32 GB flash drive should NOT be branded as Windows 8 compatible.   I bought a Sandisk 32 GB yesterday for  $20 on sale,   but it says on the back it is compatible.
Other more/or less expensive  flash drives did not address whether compatible with Windows 8.
    I have  Windows 8.1
Thanks in advance for your help...

    Hi,
If the flash drive is listed as 'Windows 8 compatible' it cannot be used - the reason is because the HP Recovery Media creation software looks for an external device and flash drives marked Win 8 compatible show as internal drives.
In the example below, the 32 Gb usb flash drive 'Dave G' shows as an internal drive which cannot be used, while the usb flash drive 'Removable Disk H' would work.

  • Encrypted USB Flash Drive with Lion OS X questions

Like many of us, we don't want our USB flash drives lost with our valuable data on them.  So I've used the encryption function in Lion OS X in Disk Utility to make an encrypted flash drive.  This has some limitations as I read but what I want to know is can I use this usb drive on a DIFFERENT computer that also has OS X Lion?  I don't have another mac w/ lion to test it on.
This is important to me because I've got a laptop and God forbid, but if it was stolen or destroyed, will I be able to access my USB drive with important data on it by plugging it into another mac computer w/ lion?
Also, as a follow up question - I haven't yet made an encrypted DMG file (tho I plan to soon) and place that on a usb drive for multiple platform use, but how functional is this?  Can you add and copy files within the DMG file?  I thought a dmg file, once created, couldn't change in size, MB's, etc.
Basically, I'd like to use the most user friendly type of way of securing my files and data on USB flash drives.  I have tried TrueCrypt and have it installed but I just don't prefer using it.  I like the simplicity of the former approach, though it has it's limitations.

    How about any computer instead?
Hardware based encryption is superior to software encryption which can be hacked or not available if your needs change.
This will work with any computer, and has a nice keychain so you can attach to something like your wrist or retractable key cable.

There are also hardware based encypted external hard drives with their own keys and password keypads, also work with any computer if your needs are larger then a USB can handle.

  • Today's dumb USB flash drive question

    Hello All,
I have an SD DV clip in Final Cut. Can I download this clip as uncompressed video to a USB flash drive and then give this USB flash drive to customers to look at on their Mac or PC to watch? Will this work? Will the picture and sound look as good as it does in FCP.
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

Uncompressed? If the clip was DV it is compressed already (DV compression).
If you truly gave him an uncompressed file, then it is HIGHLY unlikely he will be able to play it from the USB port. Uncompressed is about 30MB/sec of data. Heck he might not be able to play if from his hard drive. This is ignoring codec issues - he might not even have a player that supports the codec.
Maybe you gave him a DV encoded file, and that is what you mean by "uncompressed". If so, he probably will be able to play the file.
If he plans to use this clip to edit, then what you did is perfect.
However, DV is an interlaced, non-square pixel format. Hardly ideal for viewing on a home PC.
If you are just trying to give him a clip that he can look at, or maybe even email around, I would highly recommend exporting an .mp4 encoded file. Even though it is highly compressed it often looks better, due to the lack of interlacing and non-square pixels.

  • Mount a USB flash drive from a shell

I am about six months new to Linux; I have installed my first arch system but not yet installed a desktop environment.  I am trying to mount a USB flash drive from the shell but I am not having much luck.  I have tried following the instructions in the archwiki, http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/USB_Storage_Devices. I am having a problem with the following command:
    mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstick
I get an error message saying that the mount point does not exist.  I have in the /mnt directory the following:
    cd cdrom dvd fd0 f1
(I am not sure what fd0 and fl are, if somebody could please tell me I would appreciate it.  Also I do not have a DVD-ROM on my computer is the dvd listed by default or do I have a package installed I do not need?)  I did some searching online and came across the following site, http://linuxcommando.blogspot.com/2007/ … -from.html. I followed the instructions to identify the correct partition name corresponding to the USB drive by running the following command:
    grep SCSI /var/log/messages.log
and I get the following results:
Dec 30 22:16:17 morgan-desktop scsi2 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage divices
Dec 30 22:16:22 morgan-desktop sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
The next steps in the instructions are to mount the partition to the existing mount point (directory) by using the following command.
    mkdir -p /mnt/myusb
    mount -t vfat -o rw,users /dev/sda1 /mnt/myusb
This is where I am having a problem, I do not understand the results and how to proceed to the next step, please help me.
One other small question what is the best command to shut down the computer as a normal user?
    Thank you
    Morgan Smith

Ok, Lots of different advice here, let's see if I can explain it all together, and clear up a few bits...
I'll try to explain why I'm saying what I am, it doesn't matter if you don't follow it all, commands are below.
You are on the right lines here, but a few things missing.  Firstly, to mount the USB stick you are using the correct command, but the locations are a problem.  The command is "mount -t type what/to/mount where/to/mount".   You can find out more about the mount command with "mount --help" or "man mount"
You have correctly identified type as vfat - this means the pen is formated as FAT.
To find out what to mount, you can check /var/log/messages.log, the second command you posted searches trough that file and prints out lines including the phrase SCSI, and the result tells you that a usb storage device had been attached as sdb, so the correct device is /dev/sdb1.  Storage devices are named sda sdb sdc etc in the order they are attached, and the numbers refer to the partitions on the disk.
You can mount it anywhere you want, as any existing directory, but the one you tried to use /mnt/usbstick doesn't exist, so create it, using mkdir.
The commands you need therefore are:
    mkdir /mnt/usbstick
    mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbstick
This will work as root.  There is also, as byte said, a program called pmount (which you can get with pacman -S pmount) which works the same way for a standard user.
Finally, there are also a number of tools like HAL which can be used to automate the process.
As for shutting down, as has been said you must be root or in the power group, then you can use 'halt' 'poweroff' 'reboot' or 'shutdown'. All have slightly different effects, and poweroff is probably the easiest.
    Hope this helps
    Jack

  • X220 "Create Recovery Media" on USB flash drive

Is it required to first create an Active Partition on the USB flash drive, within Windows 7, before creating "Factory Recovery Disks" on a USB flash drive - FOR THE X220?
I've carefully looked at the X220 User Guide and it makes no mention of it.  Yet, I came across a web page on this site explaining how to create an active partition prior to making recovery media.  However, it does NOT reference the X220 as an affected computer and I wonder if the active partition happens automatically on the X220.

    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Making-a-usb-stick-with-the-Lenovo-recovery-pa...
Here's the best thread I can find on the subject.  You're still going to have to make the partition active.  The x220 doesn't have anything extra in it to automatically make it active.  That thread has some good links in it with pretty good instructions.  I know the x220 isn't listed as an affected system but I think that the support site just hasn't been updated yet.

  • Disabling a U3 USB Flash Drive

I bought a U3 USB flash drive (San Disk 2GB) and know everytime a separate drive pops up on my iBook and I have to eject 2 drives to get the thing off my mac. I tried reformatting, but still the U3 disk shows. How can my Flash disk be normal like my old San Disk 256MB drive I had before I bought this new one?
    John

    Hi Guys,
The following is an update to my last post. I figured I'd try again to contact U3 & SanDisk again about the error of their ways and the undesirability of the U3 software & partition for Mac users. Firstly, it turns out that U3 is apparently a subsidiary of SanDisk. The Tech Support fellow who I spoke with claimed that they had released a Mac version of the "uninstaller", but it had to be pulled from their websites because of bugs and/or compatibility issues (it probably was deleting partitions & software from users hard drives instead of the flash drive). They now say that the Mac "uninstaller" should show up again "in coming months". I would suggest using great care in using any software that comes from them - they are SO incredibly clueless (at LEAST about Mac systems)! My original recommendation from my previous post still stands: Keep giving them heqq by way of their tech support line until they come through for us!

  • How to obtain warranty for a 8 GB Lenovo USB Flash Drive

    Hello,
Six months ago I ordered a 8 GB Lenovo MYKEY C20W USB flash driver, part number 45K2224. Unfortunately, the device has stopped being recognized by my computer and I cannot access the drive or its contents, it only shows up as a "USB MEMORY BAR USB DEVICE". I would like to obtain warranty service and exchange the product for a new one, but I couldn't find relevant warranty contact info on the main Lenovo support site. Could someone please direct me in the right direction (a phone number or email address would be greatly appreciated!)

  • How do I safely remove my sd card and usb flash drives from my iMac?

iMac newbie here.  After years of PC messes and crashes I finally converted to iMac.  However it's not always easy to find what I am looking for.  The first time I disconnected a usb flash drive a warning appeared on the screen.  I neglected to jot down the instructions.  Now I want to remove the SD card for my phone, and I don't want to mess anything up.  Can someone point me in the right direction?  Thanks.

You posted in the iMac forum; to properly dismount any external drive from a Mac, drag its' icon to the trash can. Then you can unplug it. I don't have an iphone, so I can't answer that. You'd get more knowledgeable answers for that question in an iPhone forum.

  • Pavilion dm1 Making A Recovery Set Using USB Flash Drive

I have a Pavilion dm1 for which I have tried to create a Recovery Set using a USB flash drive.  However, on starting the Recovery Manager, I find I can only use discs......but the Pavilion dm1 has NO disc drive and no facility therefore to burn discs!!! Am I wrong to be completely puzzled by this?  Does anyone have any idea at all, other than to purchase an external disc drive which I really do not want to do??  HP will sell me a Recovery Set but again ONLY ON DISC!! Seems absurd that a piece of kit that has no disc drive will only be able to be recovered using a disc!  I confess to being a bit computer illiterate so maybe I am missing something.  Any help most gratefully accepted.

  • USB Flash Drive no longer shows on Desktop, it does appear in disk utility. I recently upgraded to 10.8 from 10.6 on both iMac and Macbook and the drive does the same on both.

I updated my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and have had only minor issues with some software but I plugged in a USB flash drive and went to format it, it now appears only in disk utility and not on the desktop. I have tried restarting and reseting with the drive in and out, I tried it into my macbook and it does exactly the same there. I can't do anything in Disk Utility so can't access it in any way and it says errors if I try to eject it from DU. I'm not normally stumped but I can't figure this out at all. I'm hoping that someone here could give me an idea that I haven't thought of as it's a large Flash Drive and I really would like to keep using it.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

If it has the same (bad) behavior on two different systems then there is a very good chance that the  drive is toast.
BTW you'll get better response to your questions if the question actually reflects the problem you are having. In this case it would have been better to say you couldn't access the drive rather then that it doesn't show on the desktop.
    regards

  • The alias can't be opened because the original item can't be found - After USB Flash Drive transfer

I've seen a couple of threads about this message, but none dealing with my simple issue:
I get this message: "The alias can't be opened because the original item can't be found" -- AFTER TRANSFERRING THE FILE IN QUESTION VIA FLASH DRIVE.
I thought, maybe the "original item" hadn't been completely copied from the drive, so I tried opening the file again this time with the drive still plugged into the laptop--but again, the message came up and I couldn't open it.
    What's the deal?
    The files I'm transferring:
a 1.2GB MKV file of a movie I downloaded, which I had no trouble viewing on my desktop
    a 105MB application
(btw, the application is called "VLC", which is a file playing app that works on my desktop, and I want it on my laptop so that I can play movie files like .mkv, which is the other file I'm transferring...but that doesn't make any difference, I think. No, I can't just download the movie and the app right onto the laptop...I don't have wifi right now...='[...)

I had been dragging straight from the desktop into the USB window. Eventually, I opened up finder and went to Desktop there, and when I dragged the files from there into the USB window, it worked. Now it took a while to move the files into the USB, which was a sign that they were actually being moved.
