My Universal Card Reader is an "Unsupported Device"...Why?

I was excited to receive a 30G iPod as a Christmas gift and was further excited to have the ability to transfer my digital photos to my iPod (while traveling) for storage and review. However, I'm having difficultly setting this up properly. My iPod works fine except for this one hitch.
I purchased a "Mass Storage" (as recommended by the Apple website) Universal Card Reader (Promaster model# 1680), but when I connect it to my newly purchased Camera Connector all I get is a message on my iPod telling me it’s an “unsupported device”. What am I doing wrong???
An interesting note…according to the Apple website one needs iPod photo software 1.1 or later to use a Camera Connector. According to my iPod Updater software I am up-to-date with software version 1.0. Am I missing something???
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

My digital camera is an older Olympus model (C3000Z). It does have a USB cable and can connect and upload directly to my computer. But I was looking for something to use while traveling.
My camera is not supported by the Camera Connector (per the Apple website and my own attempt). The supported device listing on the Apple website (best I can tell) only lists cameras, not card readers….so I presumed any card reader that used Mass Storage would work (per the website’s notes on importing protocol).
Can you recommend a Smart Media Card Reader that is supported by the Apple Camera Connector?

Which version of iPhoto are you using?
In iPhoto '11: Look for your camera’s icon in the Source list in the sidebar.  If the icon is there, click it. iPhoto should open in import view, and you can select the photos to import.

  • USB Universal card reader intermittent eject

    Hi all,
Brand spanking new MBP 17" core i7. I use a Technika brand usb card reader for my CF cards. This works fine on my old 15" MBP 2.4ghz. Also works fine on my MacPro 8core. However, When I connect a card to the new machine it ejects randomly after a couple of minutes with the Eject warning dialog. It's intermittent as I did manage to copy over 200+ Camera Raw images after several attempts.
    Any ideas?
External USB HD seems OK as does my Wacom tablet.

Hi, Dave. Since your iMac has built-in USB ports rather than an add-in USB adapter card, the software Tom mentioned is, in fact, unnecessary on your machine. The Mass Storage Support software you downloaded and installed should have done the trick for you.
Have you restarted the iMac since installing the Mass Storage Support extensions? If not, do. Does Apple System Profiler recognize that either the memory card or the reader is connected to your Mac? Have you tried connecting the reader to each of the two USB ports on the computer, to see whether the problem might be a bad port? (Connecting it to a keyboard's USB port may not work, because that port may not supply enough power to the device if it doesn't have its own AC adapter.)

I have now tried with the preload without any luck. Or that is not completly true, I could put a 1 gB Kingston card in the computer and it would pop up. But it also freezed the computer from time to time.
If I took the card again after a freeze, the computer went back to normal.
But out of 6 SD cards, that was the only one I managed to get working.
I tried all kind of sizes:
    64 mb (no luck)
    512 mb (no luck)
1 gb (kinda worked - sometimes freeze)
    2 gb (no luck)
    4 gb (no luck)
    8 gb  (no luck)
So now I have called Lenovo support and they will come and fix it for me.

  • Device removal error.....   The card reader ejects itself

Hello, I'm new to macs and purchased a Mac Mini a week ago. Things were going well until I needed to move pictures from a digital camera to my mac.
I purchased a GE 19 in 1 card reader which is built for mac os x. I hook it up to a usb port and try and look at some pictures. After a few seconds, the card reader ejects itself and I get the "device removal" error. The error will then continue to appear over and over again. When I try to eject the reader using by clicking eject, the reader ejects and only reappears a minute later and ejects itself again. I've tried using another usb port and I know for sure that its not the cable.
If I can't get any prompt answer here, I'm going to call the Genius bar tomorrow morning and ask about the problem. <Edited by Moderator>

More often than not, when a card reader or other similar device disconnects from the USB bus because it is drawing too much power. In a card reader, that would not unusually be triggered not by the card reader itself, but by the insertion of a card causing it to read the content and mount the volume on the Mac's desktop. Part of the problem is that while everything is invariably quoted as USB compatible, many such devices don't entirely comply with the USB standard, resulting in conflicts or load demands which may be borderline, or worse.
You may be able to get more reliable performance from your reader by disconnecting other USB devices when you are trying to use it, or by using it with a powered USB hub. Occasionally, borderline problems can be temporarily resolved by connecting the device to a different port, if necessary switching devices around. Alternatively, it may be that in an attempt to produce a device with the greatest flexibility in terms of media compatibility, they have compromised on components.
I would generally recommend a card reader designed for the specific card type you need. These are typically far more reliable. If you need to use different types of card media, then be prepared to spent on a well established brand with a reputation in this sector of the market, such as SanDisk.

  • Images on card reader

Usually I import my photo files (shooted by Sony Cybershoot) through an USB universal card reader into the MBP. Now after last OS upgrade, toghether with Wifi signal dropping, I can not import the photos any more. One error message inform me that the external volume (card reader) has not closed properly (?) and suddenly the finder close up. I can import the same files with a PC with no problems, and this let me think about there’s no damaged files or any trouble with the card reader device.
    Any hints?
    Thanks

There is a very similar sounding problem reported in another thread, but neither you nor the other poster mentions the brand of the card reader. See here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2668447
I don't know if the problem is with a particular brand of card reader or not, but that is possible. Can you plug the camera directly into the computer and see if Image Capture (launch Image Capture from the Application folder) lists the camera and will import the images?

  • Airport Exp. USB and photo card reader

My express works fine with Itunes, wireless printing, but does not seem to recognize my universal card reader for digital camera . ( I take the card out of the camera, and insert it into the reader. It works fine when plugged directly into the conputer USB. Thanks for any help.

  • File copy to SD Card via Card Reader hangs

I have a 2gb SD card and Iogear sd card reader. Whenever I try to copy more than a few files to it, the Finder hangs. I am copying mp3 files to use in an mp3 player that accepts sd cards. I have tried copying all folders at once (30 folders, 1.8gig), one at a time, all files but no folders, and other variations. It will copy fine to a point, and then the copy hangs. I have mounted the device in VPC and performed the same copy and everything works fine.
I am using a Powermac G5, dual 2gig, using the front USB 2.0 port and the card reader is the only device connected.
    Thanks for your help. Brad

I updated to the latest release, 10.4.6, and still have the problem. It also happens with a 1gb SD card. I was successful copying one folder at a time to the 1gb drive. However, I also have a 1bg USB thumb drive and have no trouble copying several folders at once.
    Any suggestions?

  • Can someone explain to me what a "card reader" is and how it is different

from simply plugging my camera into the computer? Is it better than plugging the camera in? Thanks and I apologize for what must be a silly question.

Not silly at all. A card reader is a little device, some are built into computer mice, that allows you to take the card from the camera, plug the card into the reader and download the images from the card:
    http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/lexar/300x-udma.htm
The main advantage is that the reader is usually faster at downloading images than the camera.
If you shoot multiple memory cards and download the images to the computer all at once it will prevent wear and tear on the camera plugging and unplugging the cards into the camera. Other than that, I don't see any real advantage. I get 250 or so images on my card, and that means I can download once a month or so. (Though lately I have been downloading every two to three days - without the card being full - since my wife has been taking pictures for her Summer Camp Newsletter!) I guess I should get another card, since I have come close to filling it a few times...
So, if you fill up several cards at a time and need to get the pictures into the computer all at once, a reader would be a good investment. If you use a single card and only periodically download to the computer, you probably don't need a reader.

  • Numeric key pad is not working, card reader is not working

Numeric key pad is not working, card reader is not working,

Did you (or someone else) physically open the laptop case?
If you did, then some cables might have gone loose inside.
If you didn't, for the card reader, check if appropriate device drivers are installed in windows device manager.
for the numeric keypad, first tap once on the NUM LOCK key and check.
If this doesn't solve the problem, boot to "Safe mode", and check.

  • HP Pavilion G6 SD card reader isnt working

    Hi,
I have new HP Pavilion G6 laptop and i cant operate the SD cared reader. Any card pluged into the SD slot isnt recognised

I know this is a bit of an old thread now , I was having the same problem. Looks like the card reader was disabled in device manager.
So, right click 'computer' on the start menu, then manage, click 'device manager'. Find 'realtek pcie cardreader' (under memory technology driver' and click 'enable'. Windows should find the device and you'll get a new drive letter appear.
    Hope this helps

  • Psu of mega 651 and card reader

Hi ive got 2 quick questions i need help with
1/ I've got these components in my mega 651
    512 pc2700 ram
    120 gb hd maxtor
    2.8 p4 processor
    64mb geforce 4 mx440
    Pinnacle Tv card rave
I want to upgrade my graphics card to ati Radeon 9200 128mb, and put in another stick of 512 ram. (same brand and speed)
Just wanted to know if the mega 651 psu, could handle these changes and run smoothly?
2/ I cant seem to install the card reader, its never been reconised in windows xp with the "new hardware detected", i've tried pluging and unpluging it from the motherboard, but that doesnt work. Is there settings I need to change in the bios, and what should the card reader be under in device manager?

as for your card reader problems, i fear you may have a faulty unit.
There should be two devices listed under "Disk Drives" in Device Manager:
    OEI-USB CompactFlash USB Device
    OEI-USB SM/MS/SD USB Device
and in My Computer you'll see two "Removable Drives"
The other possiblity is that you are running an old version of Windows XP without Service Pack 1 installed, which has a USB patch included. Do other USB devices work?
Its possible that the devices are not being recognised because this patch is not installed. Visit Windows Update to download the latest updates.
Lastly, make sure that the USB controller is Enabled in the BIOS settings.
Thanks for the reply, I'm using windows xp with sp1 and updates, all the other usb ports seem to working ok, so i think it just may be a faulty card reader

  • Mountain Lion/SD Card reader

    MBP Early 2011 running 10.8.
Had no issues with Lion, since upgrade cannot get my SD cards recognised.
    Reader shows up in hardware;
    Built in SD Card Reader:
      Vendor ID:          0x14e4
      Device ID:          0x16bc
      Subsystem Vendor ID:          0x14e4
      Subsystem ID:          0x0000
      Revision:          0x0010
      Link Width:          x1
      Link Speed:          2.5 GT/s
But cards are not being seen. Restarted the Finder, ensured that Finder preferences has everything switched on to display - both on sidebar and on desktop, rebooted my Mac, tried "wriggling" and reinserting multiple times the cards. All recognised as usual in my other computer and cameras. Nothing.
At this rate I am going to have to buy an USB card reader, I have seen a couple of other people here with the same problem but no fix.
    Anybody got any more ideas?

Thanks for the tip - I tried it but no difference for me. I have even dug out my can of air (aerosol especially for blowing dust from electronic components) and give the reader a good blast.
I used to use the SD slot every couple of days, never had any reliability issues with any of my cards, and literally the day after I installed mountain lion I couldn't use the reader at all. Not a single card works.
If there is something in there it is well wedged. Next step is going to have to be to pull apart the macbook and see if I can get to the card reader and see if it can be pulled apart. Anybody got any tips on this?
And no I don't have AppleCare and this is an early 2011 model so out of warranty...
