My URL Bar is blacked out on Windows XP
I don't know what the computer decided to do, but sometime after I went to bed last night and when I woke up this morning Firefox seems to have changed.
The URL bar where you type in the web address now blacks out the URL so that I cannot see what is typed up there. I found other links to the same issue
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1001447?esab=a&as=aaq
However, my problem is that I am on Windows XP whereas all the fixes I can find are for other OS. It suggests going into the about:config and altering gfx.xrender.enabled but when I search I do not have an xrender option available. I assume this is because I am on Windows.
So can anybody help me figure out what needs to be changed on the settings for an XP user to solve this issue?
In Firefox version 33, Firefox has implemented a new, faster way of loading webpages. This new feature is called OMTC.
There was an issue with black screens/boxes but it has been addressed in Firefox 33.0.1. The latest version is now 33.0.2. Please update to the latest version of Firefox if you are not currently on it:
* https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new/
* or for all versions and languages: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/
Alternatively, if you are in Firefox and can see your menus:
* Help (or [[Image: New Fx Menu]] > [[Image: Help-29]]) > About Firefox
If you are finding that there are still problems, try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
# Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options''
#In the Firefox Options window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
* [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
* [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
Thank you.

Why my notebook sometimes blacks out, in windows 7, when I watch video online or just browse some web pages which contains quite a lot pictures?
1. I am not sure whether it is the problem of the graphic hardware, relevant softwares or the system itself.
2. I am not sure whether browsing a webpage with a lot pictures would make the graphic hardware, or other hardwares if possible, massively burdened and then just crash.
3. Or if possible, is the reason that the heat dissipation doesn't work well?
I am looking forward to any replies that might be helpful. Really appreciated.it could be heat, not enough RAM, but you don't tell us enough.
There is no reason to assume this is anything other than running Windows natively btw.
Browser of course matters probably the most.
I like IE10 now, but use to use FF until recently. I'd like Chrome except for a few concerns I have over using it, it can eat up a lot of RAM and it builds up HUGE disk cache if you don't clear history and cache on exit and run CCleaner regularly ( good for all browsers )
So assuming 64-bit and 4GB or more and core i5 or better...
Also make sure Wiindow has 10GB of free space or more.
Biggest concern is what happens afterwards and whether you have run a check of your hard drive (chkdsk on startup) or if the problem cascades and gets progressively worse on top of the first - like do you have to do hard restart or able to bring up Task Mgr and kill or better yet, Resource Mgr and see if you have any thread locks.
Safari is not well versed in multithreading and handling what you want to do and are doing. IE9 isi usually good but I found it could not handle a lot of tumblr photo streams and sites. Try Chrome. With Firefox, use noscript, blashblock and see how it goes. -
Problem: formatting bar is blacked out ?!?
in keynote (5.1.1) on osX (10.7.5) i have the problem that the formatting toolbar is just "blacked out": it is there, and I can click "in the dark", but I have to guess where to click really.
this makes creating presentation almost impossible.
how can this be ressolved? any ideas, or any support??ok, it works again.
Here is what I did:
- contacting apple support, ask them what to do. their advice:
- 1. create a new, fresh account to test if its a systemwide problem, or user specific
- 2. boot into safe mode once, and reboot system again
- 3. reset SMC/PRAM
- 4. reinstall keynote
- 5. install 10.7 combo update...
- I followed step 1 & 2: the problem was systemwide, and booting into safe mode did not help
- then I just tried to update keynote via the appstore to see if that would help. It did help, it seems all good again.
interesting that the support guy on the phone did not mention this first, but wanted to let me go through all kinds of steps - even though I told him EXACTLY what osX/keynote version I used, down to the build! -
Application bar is greyed out under window menu
Although I can see an application bar on my document, it is "greyed out" under the window menu. Specifically when I click the icon to arrange documents ie - tile vertically/horizontally - everything is greyed out
Hi,
Do you have a project open?
if so double click on a sequence and the timeline should appear. Or start a new project if you don't have one open.

Why is addressbar blacked out. New Xubuntu 14.04 install.
I installed Xubuntu 14.04 on a Pentium P4 desktop. (32 bit. Motherboard graphics. VGA drives flatscreen.) Firefox has no addons. Deafult theme. It is in safe mode. System is updated today. 12 June 2014.
On every site the Firefox address bar is blacked out. As I type the address or query the first few letters are visible, then if I pause or press enter, the bar blacks out. I can move the left arrow key over the text and that exposes the text, but as soon as I try to edit that address, it is all blacked out again.
This behavior has been the same since I installed this OS more than a month ago, through several xubuntu updates.
On an earlier install a partial solution was to use a different theme.I remember seeing this a while ago and it had to do with an add-on although I don't remember it. Two things you can do though.
Can you try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if Firefox works properly with no error? You can start Firefox in Safe Mode below:
*'''Windows/Mac''': Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
*'''Linux''': Run ''firefox -safe-mode'' in the Terminal/Konsole
If Firefox opens up fine with no problems, it's probably one of your extensions that's causing the issue. You can re-enable your add-ons one by one until you find the one that causes the issue upon being re-enabled.
Or just one. -
A very strange Safari problem... everything works fine except when I attempt to type in the url bar or the Google search window... then Safaru crashes. I can access sites from my bookmarks no problem... Just cant type a url.
Tried all the usual stuff as well as re-installing but to no avail.
I installed iTunes 7.6 last night after the keynote. Could that be causing the problem???Sorry... i reset Safari, turned off plug-ins, deleted plist file and re-installed. Anything else I shoudl do would be appreciated!

The problem started after doing a Windows 7 disk cleanup. When I open Firefox the screen where the body of the website is is blacked out and the menu bars are not visible. I can tell Firefox and websites are loading because I can guess where address bar is and type website and when I hover over address bar it will read name of website. Also, when I open a Firefox icon that had been saved to my desktop of a youtube link, the video will play visibly in Firefox, but the rest of the screen will be blacked out.
I have tried a full uninstall and installation [including deletion of registries and all that]. All windows for Firefox, including the one that asks to make it default browser, profile maneger, etc. show up blacked out, so I can't try to make new profiles and all that. I even restored my computer to earlier point. Please help. I'm posting this message from Internet Explorer.hello kuzicharm, other users with this problem all had an embedded intel hd3000 graphics card with an old driver present. in case this also applies to you, here would be a link to update the driver, which in turn should also address the black firefox problem: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764 (for win7 64 bit)
in case this doesn't solve the issue or does not apply to your system, start firefox into safemode '''by pressing the shift key while the application is launching''' & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

I can't see what I am typing in the URL bar. Maybe 5 characters are visible an a time. The Translator Bar Covers over half of the open window.
Mozilla hasn't changed anything like that in Firefox 3.6.x versions, which is getting security patches but not any further development of new or existing features. Plus, Mozilla doesn't install anything related to Yahoo, something else probably installed that.
Please provide a screenshot of what you are talking about.
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Adding+screenshots
There was a feature similar to what you are describing, that was in and out of the Firefox 4.0 betas last fall, but the 3.6 versions never had anything remotely like what your description has me visualizing.
Ate you sure that one of your add-ons isn't doing that?
FF4b7's window gradually 'blacks out' so to speak when running Flash objects.
The window's elements may turn black immediately upon playing, say, a YouTube video. They may also black out when hovering over items like buttons in a toolbar (after Flash has started usually). Happens often.
[IMG]http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm270/warfang866/FF4b7blackout.png[/IMG]
The only way to fix it is to close the browser. I was able to click the close button in the title bar to do this, even though it had already turned black.Hi systemBuilder, you are not alone in your frustration. The problem is the plugin model: plugins are allowed to do much more than they can be trusted to do intelligently. Without a change to that, Firefox cannot stop the Flash player from changing window focus.

In my Macbook Pro, on a few occassions, the apple menu bar blacks out. its displayed as a negative image. The desktop wallpaper get greyed out and i get a blank screen as wallpaper. No idea why this happens. I reset the system and issue gets resolved.

How? -
I like and use Top Sites but it has become unsuable with this constant blacking out and reloading the thumbnails. My MBP has not seen a problem at all.
I have been searching every other day for over a month trying to find a fix in Windows Safari with no joy. I want to resolve, not switch browsers. Please offer up a solution that only refreshes the Top Site thumbnails once a day or as some controlable interval. Started about two versions ago, now on ver 5.1.5. Windows 7 64bit.
Safari 5.1.5 for Win64 bit, Windows 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I think I solved the wifi connection problem, just by switching off completely the router! sounds trivial, but in this case it worked!!!
the funny behaviour of the trackpad/cursor still persists. any suggestion???
thanks again -
I'm running FF 4 Beta 8 with the latest Flash player (10.1.102.64). When I play YouTube videos, the video is loaded, starts, and plays okay, but when I move my cursor around within the Firefox window, portions of the window black out under where the cursor travels. FF tabs and buttons will black out, or parts of the YouTube page (but not the video). CTL-ALT-Del to bring up Windows Security Panel, then CANCEL will restore the Firefox window, plus the YouTube page correctly (ie black is gone and window has been redrawn correctly). I can open up new tabs and replicate the problem multiple times. I've also experienced this problem with embedded YouTube videos (though it's easiest to replicate the problem direct from the YouTube page.) I don't experience this problem at all with FF 4 Beta 8 in Safe Mode, nor the latest FF 3.x.x. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the Flash plug-in. Anyone have any ideas?
Problem involving videos played from the YouTube site is much less noticeable after upgrading from FF 4.0b8 to 4.0b9, but still occurs with embedded YouTube videos, where blacking out of other portions of the window still happens.

When I open FF there is no text displaying(menus, content, etc.), and most of the window is blacked out. For example... I can see the the firefox button on the top left corner, when I go to it the drop down list drops and there is no text, if I move down the drop down I hit where there is a slide out in that drop down and no text is there. So, to start in safe mode you need to go to the firefox button, and click on start in safe mode. I can't See safe mode or click on anything were safe mode should be.
hello, close all firefox windows & hold the shift-key while opening firefox in order to launch it in safemode. in the first dialog just choose "continue in safemode" and go to firefox > options > advanced > general. in there disable hardware acceleration, restart firefox normally again and see if this has changed anything.

Windows XP mouse halted and screen blacked out!
When I boot up with boot camp and dragging some windows size (like IE or Excel). The mouse pointer halted and after a few seconds the screen blacked out just like the machines is turned off. However, I discovered that the system is still running. I can perform the shut down action by input from the keyboard.
The problem does not exist when I start windows xp through VMware Fusion.
Did anyone encounter the same problem??
I just bought the iMac a few days. Thanks for your reply, I have a wireless mouse/keyboard & called manufacturer to test both & they told me to plug the wired ones in & they did not work & the laptop has no plug for wired ones because those have rounded ends, laptop has wrong size/shape usb ports, so there is no way to test them on laptop, so now I'm hoping you or someone has an idea of what to do next, thank you for your ideas.

everything is updated
the minimize/exit area is blacked out, but does still work if you click the correct area
I disabled my brower extensions one by one, restarted FF, and the black was still there
I started FF in safe mode and black was still there
It's not worth spending a lot of my time on.
I'm thinking about trying Chrome.I only had problems after my latest update to FF 30.
