My USB Drive goes half speed on Arch

Dear Archers:
I have a problem when running my USB hard drive (of 1 TB) on my Arch laptop. For some reason, the drive, which is a USB 3.0, copies files from the external to the internal drive at about 30 MB/s. Doing the "same" task with the "same" files on the "same" USB 3 port on the "same" laptop on other Debian-based distros results in a transfer rate of 60 - 100 MB/s. Am I missing some package to run at full speed with my Arch system?
Another thing that I've also noticed is that there's a delay of more than 1 minute when I try to mount the drive. This doesn't happen on other distros.
Any hint or suggestions are welcome!
Thanks in advance

Ok guys. An annoying update here.
The problem with this external drive achieved a new level of difficulty for me. Yesterday the problems were a slow mount (over a minute) and slow transfer rates for both writing and reading data. Today I got back home and tried to plug the drive once again and the freaking thing just won't mount at all!. The hard drive appears in the list of detected devices and on my file manager, but when I click on it to open the folder and get it to mount, the complete file manager freezes. I have to unplug it and try again. I have to repeat these steps something like four or five times in order to see the content (I was really really scared when I experienced this because I thought the drive was broken, but I tried it in another PC and everything was showing correctly).
I'm starting to get desesperate...I constantly write data to back it up for job purposes. Hopefully I'll solve this thing, or you guys can throw some more technical help at me.
In case it matters: The external drive is a USB 3.0 (brand Verbatim) of 1 TB, I keep the default filesystem that drive was using as factory default (I think is NTFS). I have Arch Linux updated as of today, with the latest stable packages. I run Arch with Ubuntu's Unity in UEFI mode as the only OS. I tried other file managers as well including KDE's Dolphin, Thunar, PCManFM and Nemo but no avail.

  • EA4500 USB drive going offline

I have the latest firmware installed.  I have an Intel SSD drive formatted as NTFS attached to the USB port.  I have a device which has the drive mounted and copies files to the USB storage once a minute.  After about 3 hours, the goes offline and I have to discconect it and reconnect it.  The files are about 16Meg.  I'm not able to see anything in the log as it wraps by the time I catch the error.  The drive is readable from another computer.  The device making the copies sees an empty directory but will see all the folders when the USB device is unplugged and replugged in, then brought online.
Any idea what causes storage to go offline?

Try another USB drive on the router and see if it will have the same problem. Do try another device or computer, too, to see if it will get the same issue. It is possible that you may have to reset the router and reconfigure from scratch. For more info about the tested drives for this router model, go to this link: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=5f18093aedee4f09a26eae80a33d630e_Tested_HDD_and_Pr....

  • How to stop importing from usb drive going into root ITMS directory

First time I imported, everything was fine. I was trying to get rid of some duplicates and got rid of one of the main subdirectories (I had "Itunes Music" folder with two main subdirectories, let's call them "Laptop" and "Desktop." I noticed I had many duplicate artists from these, so I deleted the "Laptop" directory. Naturally, all these showed up with asterisks on iTunes. With no easy way to delete them all (can't sort based on asterisk, apparently), I removed EVERYTHING from my Library and attempted to copy over from the USB drive again. This time, the contents of "Laptop" went into the root "iTunes Music" folder (so there were now ~50+ folders including the "Desktop."
This isn't working for me, since my objective is to get rid of the duplicate work (duplicate tracks I can somewhat stomach, but I also have some duplicate "Artists" which is driving me crazy). I removed everything from the library, deleting it all (~30+GB) and deleted all of the subdirectories from the iTunes Music folder.
When I went to reimport it all again. I dragged the "Laptop" folder from Finder on the USB drive into the iTunes Music directory again (as I did the first time), recreated the and everything continues to populate the top iTunes music folder. Is there any way to stop this? I want the "Laptop" folder to stay in it's subdirectory structure distinct and separate from the "Desktop" folder so I can ensure I am not unnecessarily increasing my structure.
One easy (though extremely tedious) alternative could be to import the folders one at a time... but I'd really like to avoid that. But for my first mistake, this wouldn't have been an issue. I haven't changed any settings on iTunes, so please advise!

I have duplicate (different) stuff on the laptop versus desktop but some unique to each (and all kinda scrambled up). I first started importing on my old G3 ibook. It was slower and chugged harder and some are at really low bitrate, for example, and also lack album art. My XP desktop was made for gaming and is much more powerful, so I always did high bitrate and was much more careful to do all the album art, etc.
Now I'm trying to consolidate it all on my new MBP... Mostly, though, it's a mess and I've been putting this off for years and it's mostly my fault. My biggest gripe is the large number of duplicate tracks. I can live with these when they're from different albums (compilations mostly), but not when one is a lower bit. I imagine I'm gonna be doing it the hard way, one album/artist at a time...

  • External USB drive goes to sleep, iPhoto complains when it try's to access it and exits

I moved my iPhoto to an external USB Harddrive and everything at first worked fine.  Now I get these errors sometimes "Your iPhoto Library is missing".  iPhoto will exit and when you start it again everything is fine.  What I think is happening is the external USB drive has gone to sleep due to inactivity.  Is there a setting in OS X that I can control this with ?  I ugly hack would be to set up a cron job to do a ls of the root external USB drive every 15min.  Is there a special feature that you should look for when buying an external USB drive ?  It is very iratating to get these messages from iPhoto and iTunes.
    Thanks

  • Arch Linux USB drive installER...

Hey all, is there a method to get my 1 GB USB drive to act like an Arch Linux installer? I don't need to install Arch Linux on the USB, just getting it to act like a CD is good enough for me. This is because my computer does not have a CD drive.

    Nevermind. I found these:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Usb … ch_Install
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _USB_stick
Now I have to try them out. I'll report back on how it goes!

  • 10.5.1 breaks booting from USB drive

Has it been noticed before? Booting from external USB drive goes fine with 10.5 on my MacBooks (mark I & III). After the 10.5.1 update, boot-up gets stuck on the white screen with apple logo and spinning "waiting" symbol. The fans start blowing hard and nothing happens anymore. Not for hours anyway.
When I insert the same external harddisk into the laptop, it does boot! Have not tried to get it out again, sorry.

Nope, nothing else and MacBook connected to power adapter. Will try and boot again from same drive on USB (as opposed to internal) later on and see if it goes.

  • When I try to format an external usb drive  the progress bar only goes half way then freezes up can anybody help please

When I try to format an external usb drive  the progress bar gets to half way then freezes , or stops and  what ever time I allow it never gets any futher on , I have to go to the task bar and click quit  to get on  and the usb drive is not formatted  is there a fault with my disk utility program  I have updated the system
    to lion 10.7.2
    Can anybody advise please

Are these new external drives? How are the currently formatted? Have you tried doing this:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Arch corrupts FS on external USB drive.

    Good day almighty All,
I have a Dell Latitude E6520 laptop with SSD drive, which is probably unrelated to the problem.
Recently I decided to install Arch linux on it, but before that, being a bloody smart person, I decided to back up existing windows partition and CentOS filesystem to the external HDD connected with some noname SATA-to-USB connector.
(Actually it has a name, which is "Bus 002 Device 009: ID 14cd:6116 Super Top M6116 SATA Bridge").
Enclose has my old 500GB Segate in it with LVM partition.
So the box was booted with CentOS installed, first 2048 sectors of the drive and windows partitions were dumped with dd to the files on external HDD.
Could not tell which FS was on the volume, but most probably ext3.
After that I installed Arch (base, base-devel, grub as per installation manual), changed CentOS GRUB-0.9 to GRUB2, rebooted into arch, was unpleasantly surprised by the missing ifconfig, rebooted back into Arch usb, installed net-tools, rebooted into Arch, installed various small things like vim and KDE minimal, added missing ttf-dejavu, still could not boot into KDM - startx only.
Everything was going well so far.
    Then it happened.
I mounted my USB drive from Arch and tried to dump on it CentOS partition.
Somewhere at the mark of 30-40Gb from the start  I got Input/Output errors and that's it - partition is dead.
When I tried  to remount it I've got:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/lenovo01-data,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
           dmesg | tail or so
I ran fsck on other laptop (Fedora 17) and got file system fixed but empty (well, lots of errors, everything was linked under lost+found).
RIP my backup (I have a copy on the storage and this one will be accessed via network only
I re-created FS (ext3), copied on it couple gigs of test files, connected drive to dell, mounted FS, "ls" the dir, all good.
Unmounted FS, mounted again - get what is quoted above - I/O errors.
The same drive on the same laptop works without any problem with installed CentOS and live GRML so it is not a hardware itself.
    So far:
    1. external drive can be mounted without problem when it is just connected to Arch
    2. After some data traffic it starts to produce I/O errors.
    3. When good FS is unmounted and then mounted again the story is the same - I/O errors.
    4. As soon as it happened I cannot change FS on drive, I cannot change partition table and so on. fdisk and mkfs completed without error but FS is not there and attempt to mount produces the error above.
Below is some info about installation:
System is installed on encrypted with Luks LVM partition.
    External HDD is not encrypted.

Little bit of testing,  just out of curiousity - do not have time to dig into it, sorry.
It puts garbage starting with "USBC" in first 32 bytes (the rest of the string varies) and then skips first 4K.
Tested it with CentOS - at least its 2.6 kernel works as expected.

  • Internet speed goes half at night (WRT54GS 1.1)

During the hours of 7pm-12am, my internet will go half it's speed sometimes even less but when connected directly to the modem my speed will be normal. I have a Linksys WRT54GS 1.1. I never had this problem until 3 days ago, is there any reason why my router would do this? btw I heard it's normal for speed to be lost when connected wirelessly but I get full speed (10mbps) any time but 7 to 12 it goes half it's speed unless I connect it directly to the modem.

Make sure that your network is secured..It might happen that somebody is using your network in the specific time period you have mentioned. So open the Linksys GUI by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.The default password is "admin" in lower case.
Click on the Wireless tab...Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...
For Wireless Security..Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...

  • Airport Gigabit USB drive speed.

    Hi,
I thinking of getting the new Airport Extreme and connecting a USB drive to it. (probably the LaCie mini Hard Drive, as it can sit neatly under the AE).
My question is: how would the drive access speed with a cabled cat 6 gigabit connection compare to connecting the drive directly to my mac via USB or Firewire.
I want my Macbook to access it, thus, the need for an Airport Disk. But my Mac Mini will use it all the time.
If the speed will be massively compromised via the Gigabit I'll buy two drives, one Airport and one Firewire.
Your advise would, as always, be appreciated.

    Compromised? You bet!
I have AE with 400MB USB 2.0 Maxtor HHD connected and, don't matter if I'm connected trough cable (network) or Wireless, the speed is too slow. Maximum of 7.5 MB/s of transfer... HUGE difference for the direct USB or Firewire connection speed.
Be aware of this. I'm "kind" of unhappy with my AE.

  • [SOLVED] BIOS not detecting USB Drives after i installed Arch

SOLVED: In BIOS under 'Advanced' disable 'Fast BIOS Mode'.
    Original post:
    Hi there!
I'm fairly new to the arch (and linux) scene and just setup my Samsung 530U3B with a brand new installation of arch. Everything went fine and the system is running flawlessly. Almost.
I just happend to notice that BIOS is not checking for USB drives anymore, it just somehow skips that part. If enter the boot selection, the bootable USB drive won't show up. Neither does it show up in BIOS setup. I tried to boot with the same USB drive that i used to install arch just yesterday, the live media does not boot - the drive doesn't even blink. The boot priority is set to usb drive first, the boot selection screen (hammering f10 during boot) doesn't give me any other option than to boot from the normal SSD. Also, prior to the arch installation (came with w7 installed) the BIOS screen would stay for about 2seconds and then proceed to boot - this doesn't happen anymore. When i press the power button greeted by the grub bootloader in about 1s.
I tried 2 different usb drives, both with the arch iso (same that i used to install the currently running OS, downloaded yesterday). The drives also show up once my arch is booted (starting to blink just after i hit enter in grub). Also, both drives boot without a problem on my desktop computer.
    Anyone got any ideas?
I don't really now what kinda of information would be helpful so i'm just dumping stuff i know:
BIOS: Phoenix SecureCore Tiano Version 04XK
    Machine: Samsung 530U3B
    SSD: Samsung MZ7PC128HAFU-000
ISO used to install (checksum ok): archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso

    Welcome to the forum.
If you just set the USB stick to be first in the boot order, the next option (from the list) takes its place the moment you unplug it. You need to set the BIOS to boot from your equivalent of "Removable Devices" first, "Internal Drives" second and "Optical Drives" third.
The USB stick doesn't show up at all. I set the priority as follows:
    1. USB HDD
    2. USB FDD
    3. USB CD
    4. SATA CD
    5. SATA HDD
    6. NETWORK
I used that same configuration to install arch. USB doesn't seem to initialize at all. Also, if i enter "usb" in the grub commandline, no devices are listed.
    Thanks!
    UPDATE:
I just figured it out. In my BIOS under 'Advanced' the 'Fast BIOS Mode' was enabled, once i disabled it, everything went fine. I don't remember changing that option. Silly me.
    Sorry for your time

  • Running Arch from a usb drive[SOLVED]

I am trying to install arch on a usb drive with ext3 format. I have entered root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/... on the kernel line and in /etc/fstab file (as mentioned in the wiki). On booting I am dropped to a limited shell with few linux commands. On running 'blkid' there, I find that the fixed computer hard disk is detected as sda1,2 etc and usb drive is not being detected at all.  The results are similar if I use root=/dev/disk/by-label/..
How can I boot from the usb drive.

  • USB Drive speed vs. LAN Network Drive

I am going to purchase a new external drive to connect to my Airport Extreme Base Station. I keep my music and photos libraries on this drive. I have been looking at "network" drives that work through the LAN port on the AEBS and USB drives.
Which of these will be faster, will be a more reliable connection and will be recognized by iTunes and iPhoto as the library when I open the applications??? I currently have a USB drive hooked up to the extreme and I have to go into my network, connect to the drive before I open iTunes or iPhoto for the applications to locate the libraries on the external drive. This wasn't the case before Leopard and I want to avoid having to do this.
    Thanks,
    Peter

I have set this up a few times, here is what I do:
To change your iPhoto Library, first make sure iPhoto is closed. Then, you need to locate your current library in your Pictures folder and change the name. I usually just add a in front, so it will be called "-iPhoto Library".
Then, open iPhoto. A window will open asking you to locate your iPhoto library or create a new one. For this first time, you will want to create a new library. Another window will pop up and you will want to chose your external drive and make a folder for your iPhoto library. After you do that, then, you import your old library into your new one.
Now the difference between iTunes and iPhoto is that if your library is not found, iPhoto asks for you to find it and iTunes automatically makes a new one in the Music folder. And this is my problem. I have to manually go in an change the folder in iTunes preferences all the time since upgrading to Leopard. Unless I manually click on my external drive and access the iTunes folder before opening iTunes.
But it shouldn't be that way. If Apple moves to flash drives on their laptops and keeps making us more and more dependent on external drives, they better come up with a more reliable way of making their applications work with these drives.
