My USB drive isn't showing up in Mac OS X Lion on my MacBook Air

just got new macbook air with lion. When attach usb drive can't see it on desktop. Anyway to actually see it? Be easier to drag files into it if I could see it.

If you launch Disk Utility, does the external drive show up in the volumes list on the left-hand column of Disk Utility's window?
In Finder->Preferences, do you have "General->Show these items on the desktop: Hard disks" checked?

  • Lacie d2 DVD+RW firewire drive isn't showing up on Mac

I just bought the d2 DVD+RW w/ LightScribe firewire, and connected its firewire to my Mac G5. I put in a data DVD that I had burned on my Superdrive, and it doesn't appear on my desktop. Apple System Profiler sees it just as "FireWire Device" with no details - I think my computer isn't recognizing the drive properly. Do I need some sort of driver?

    Hi Michael Levin-
It should work as a plug and play device.
What happens if you try a commercially burned DVD like a movie? Will it read a CD?

I had the exact same issue; Lion recovery from Command + R would hang with the logs showing the same message.  To resolve, I used Disk Utility to remove the recovery partition.  My Air then used Internet Recovery to load all the tools.  When using Reinstall via Internet it worked just fine.

  • My 4GB USB drive is only showing 217.2MB available, any ideas how to fix this?

My 4GB USB drive is showing only 217.2MB available but there isn't anything displayed in the Finder window that I can delete.  Any ideas?

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • My USB drive won't show up on my MacBook Pro (2012 non retina)

Okay, so I have 2 Macs.  2012 MacBook Pro, and a PPC iMac G4. I want to load music onto my USB drive, but it dosen't show up on my MacBook Pro. My iMac can read the USB without a problem, but the MacBook Pro will not. Iv'e made sure to check off everything in Finder Preferences, and also reveal everything in the Finder Side Bar, but still nothing will happen. I even tried looking for it in Disk Utility, and still nothing. Please Help.

Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • USB Drive doesn't show up in My Computer

I have a 2.5" Seagate 500GB 7200RPM laptop drive mounted into a USB case.  I plug it into my USB port along with another one that goes from DC to a different USB port.  In Device Manager, it is shown as "ST950042 0AS USB Device," which tells
me that it is being seen. However, when I open "My Computer," the drive does not show up. I have a failing drive that I keep all of my media files on and am trying to back that up to this drive, however, I cannot get a drive letter assigned to do open the
drive and back up my files.

Why doesn't my one still work?
i got my important work there!

  • USB Drives not always showing Finder

I currently have two USB Drives connected through a powered hub and they do not always show in the Finder window. Also when I pug in a USB memory stick it does the same thing.
I am new to Mac, I love it but this really bugs me. is there a setting somewhere, what is happening? If I disconnect then re-plug in the memory stick it shows up. What is really funny, that doing this also causes the missing USB drives to show up......

I tried that, but still no go with a thumbdrive. I can go to "Computer", and the USB drive shows up under that. All my other USB external HDs, my iDisk, and even FireWire drives show up on the left pane of the finder, just not the USB stick.
    Any ideas?

  • My flash drive isn't showing up on my Mac. How do I find it?

I need to get a file off my flash drive and onto my mac. I plugged it in and it isn't showing up. I checked the finder window, as it has been there before but its not there. My flash drive is working, as I can open it on our other comp.

Click on the Desktop and go to Finder>Preferences>General tab and make sure 'External Disks' is ticked under devices. Do the same on the Sidebar tab if you'd like it to show there as well.

  • External hard drive doesn't show up on Mac Mini

Working with pre-installed Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini.
External firewire hard drive does not show up on desktop or in sidebar. Also tried the same hard drive connected with USB. Tried another USB drive -- nothing.
    What can I try?

If those have a pre-existing format that works with those earlier machines, they may not show as bootable drives....they need to be set up with a GUID map as mentioned. But they should still show up in Disk Utility at least...
If they worked on those other computers, then you should try the Apple article listed above to see if all that is needed is to get the FW ports to cooperate.
If no joy there, try resetting some of the basic hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If still no joy, walk it in to the nearest Apple Store for a quick hands on.
    Good luck in any case.

  • Toshiba external drives won't show up at all on my computer (Summer 2010 MacBook Pro) since I updated it to Mavericks.

Ever since I updated my laptop to Mavericks, my toshiba drives each do a different thing when I plug them in. One of them, which is formatted for mac, works just fine. The second one, formatted for windows doesn't mount, but shows up in the disk utilities. It worked perfectly fine on Snow Leopard, and seems to work on any other computer running Mavericks. I bought a third drive to transfer all the contents and reformat the second drive for mac, but the third drive doesn't show up on my laptop or my home computer (iMac), which is running Snow Leopard.
Anybody have any ideas or solutions as to what's going on?

  • USB drive: what format for Linux and Mac?

I'm wondering what's the best format for an external USB harddrive to be used both on Macs (Tiger and Leopard) and Linux . I'm familiar with Linux, but not much with Mac.
I'd like to avoid vfat (the MS-DOS format) because symbolic links aren't allowed there.
    Regards,
    Ryo

Following up my own question, I've formatted the USB drive in hfsplus and it works both on Macs and on my Linux box (Debian testing).
One issue is that I had to turn off the journaling of the hfsplus filesystem, because (it seems) the Linux hfsplus driver doesn't support writing to the journaled hfsplus filesystem. The earliest discussion I found was from 2005 or 2006, and it's strange that the journaling support has still not been incorporated into the mainstream Linux kernels.
Without journaling, I have to be extra careful when I remove the drive. This minor annoyance aside, it works.
But, I'm still open to suggestions. For example, what's the situation of Mac OS X in supporting ext3 or reiserfs?
    Cheers,
    Ryo

  • Need updated Software for Airtel 4G USB Dongle ZTE MF 880 T for Mac OS Mountain Lion

I am trying to use ZTE 880T LTE USB Modem with Airtel for my Macbook Air (Mid 2011) however due to unsupported dialer software I am unable to use it with reliability. As industry practice the Mac Software is there on the Modem however its unstable. Many times the dialer software dosen't recognize the modem and therefore modem could not be connected to internet. The same device is working smoothly on my Windows Virtual Machine installed on the same Macbook Air however the network on VM could not be used on Mac.
What I need is the updated version of dialer software. Is anyone out there using Airtel 4G LTE USB Modem successfully in India. Please help. I am getting awsome speed here but can't use it on my Mac

    Hi Guys,
Was struggling with this for the past 2 weeks, and got it working finally.
I am using the Huwaei 4G LTE USB modem provided by Airtel, should also work for ZTE stick.
Here's what i did to get it to work.
1, Install the 4G connection Manager
2, Goto System Preferences -  Network Connections
3, You will see a Huwaei or ZTE modem, Select that
    4. In Configuration, Click on add new configuration and Name it "Airtel"
    5. Leave, Telephone number, username and password blank
    6. Click on Advanced at the bottom of the screen
    7. Click Modem, Select "Generic" in vendor
    8. Model as GPRS (GSM/3G)
    9. APN as www.airtelgprs.com, left the CID in 1
10, Say OK in the screen and come back to Network dialog box
    11. Click connect, it will get connected and you don't have to put in any proxies or any other settings.
    12. Now you can un-install the Airtel connection manager and be done with it.
