My USB ports and SD card slot aren't working!

My USB ports and SD card slot haven't been working on my MacBook Pro for a couple of months now, and I have taken it into Future shop to get it fixed under my warranty. Unfortunately my warranty was expired by a month (Oops), and the associate helping me said that there was no power getting to the ports because it had something to do with the circuit board, and that it would cost $900.00 to get it repaired. I can still charge my MacBook, and the CD hardrive works completely fine.
My goal is get my MacBook repaired for little or no cost. I was wondering if anyone knows a solution to this, or how much it would cost me to get it repaired at the Apple store.

What version of OS X is the Macbook Pro running?
In OS 10.8, you can do this:
With the iPod connected, go to Apple Menu / About This Mac / More Info / System Report.
click on USB under Hardware (in the left column).
Does the iPod appear anywhere on the right hand side (USB Device Tree)?

  • USB ports and memory card slots not working

My Pavilion a6120n desktop has worked brilliantly ever since I purchased it. As of last week the 2 usb ports in the front and the 2 unused usb ports in the back have stopped working. My printer is plugged into one rear port and my wireless mouse is plugged into a second rear port and these work fine.  I generally use a memory stick for data swapping or the card reader slots (which have also stopped working). I no longer see the memory card icons in the "Computer" window. When installing something new the "New Hardware Found" statement pops up but the driver install always fails. I think it is a software issue but there are no usb drivers to download on the HP/support site that I can find. . . so . . . Below is what I have tried so far.Run antivirus software. Full scan & memory scan - no issuesRun malewarebytes full scan - no issues I have tried restarting several times with no success. Restore to several previous restore points = failedRestarting computer in repair mode = failedRun the repair disk that I had made = failedChecked the power management for each usb port to see if the power was routed properly = okRemoved the case cover and carefully inspected the wiring and connectors.finally I tried uninstalling the usb drivers = failed  Upon restarting the computer the last time the startup file must have failed and after several hours of attempting a repair I had to reinstall the Window 7 completely. Still no usb or memory card function. Any help would be appreciated Thanks,MrBob38

  • Updated OS X Mavericks and now USB ports and MS Office apps won't work. How do I fix this?

I updated  my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) to OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 and now my USB ports and MS Office apps won't work.  What do I do to fix this?

What system version were you running before you updated to 10.9.4? Another 10.9.x or something earlier?
What version of Office? 2004, 2008, or 2011?
Were you aware that Office 2004 does not run on recent versions of the system?
When you say your USB ports do not work, on what are you determining that?
Were you aware that Mavericks does not display external disk volumes by default?

My USB ports and my SD card port do not work. They have both worked previously, but now do not read anything on my new Mac Book Pro.

If you are still under warrantee, take advantage of it and go to the Apple store.

  • 3600 slide. USB connection and memory card slot

Although generally pleased with this handset I should point out TWO design flaws.
    1. Mini USB socket is of a proprietory design, NOT a standard one. There IS enough space on the handset to have had a standard mini-USB socket (which is only fractionally larger). This I believe is yet another con trick for anyone unfortunate to lose the supplied data transfer cable.
    2. To access the Micro-SD slot requires removal of the rear cover. A totally ridiculous design when other phones have slots with easier flap based access.
Before buying this phone I did check out a dummy version instore. Port access **bleep** and buttons are 'etched/moulded' on these dummies to show where you connect cables or access functions. This is fine but until you get hold of a real one subject to stock you can't chech them out fully.
Other than these two gripes, the phone itself is pleasant to use, sound quality of calls is good, keypad is reasonably tactile and the menus well organised to access the many functions. I like the sliding keypad as it offers that bit more protection for itself. The slightly heavier feel to this phone compared with most others in its price range is a reassuring sign of good build quality. Oh yes, it is NOT MADE IN CHINA!!!

It isn't a miniUSB port at all. It's a microUSB port and it is standard.

  • USB ports and sound have stopped working

As the subject reads, all 3 of my USB ports have stopped working and all sound.  In the device manager I receive a (code 10) for realtek high definition audio.  I have done everything I can think of at this point, I have even done a complete OS reinstall. Afterwards I have also updated with every possible driver file I can find from realtek and toshiba, I really don't know what else to do at this point, any thoughts? advice? anybody else with this problem?

Same here. I have an L505D that is doing the same exact thing. No sound device, all USB ports not working and the SD card reader not working either. Also when you close the lid and reopen it, the machine won't wake up. Have to restart to get it to come back. Haven't found ANYTHING in forums to help.
Sound devices, USB ports and SD card doesn't show up in the Device Manager.
Took the laptop to a local fixer-upper. Unhooked the charger, took battery out, put battery back in, then restarted the laptop without being hooked up to the charger and everything came back on. But only for a short while. After a couple of days, it does its thing all over again.
Are we looking at a mother board issue here? SURELY someone out there in cyber space has a solution.

  • HT201257 How can I run the hardware test when my USB ports and bluetooth doesn't work?

The USB ports and the Bluetooth suddenly will not work on my Mac Mini (2008). There is very little I can do except using Remote Desktop. To run the Hardware Test, the D key has to be pressed during startup. I got no key to press. Is there any other way to do this?

Sorry, focused on bluetooth issue. If USB and bluetooth are knackered, try an SMC reset:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

Something has gone wrong - the AppleTV needs to be restored by connecting to a computer running current iTunes version using a microUSB to USB lead.
AppleTv2 does not require power when doing this.
Select the AppleTv Device on teh left in iTunes and restore to current firmware.

  • USB Ports and AGP Video Card on same IRQ

I've got a tough one.  I have 6 USB ports.  Call them 1,2,3,4,5,6. Ports 1 and 2 work fine with my new USB 2.0 80GB External Harddrive.  This pair of ports 1 and 2 are direct into motherboard.
However system crashes when I plug USB 2.0 External Drive into ports 3,4,5,6. These are Dports with cables that plug into the MB.  One of these Dports has the four error lights which are all green.  Western Digital has cautioned against sharing this drive with other IRQs.  Says that the video card and the WD harddrive require dedicated IRQs...but I have no control of how W XP assigns them.
Ports #3-6 work fine with mouse,  scanner, and printer etc. However they fail when trying to use WD External Hardrive.
I also checked IRQ settings and IRQ 16 is used for a USB Port and for my MSI AGP video card.  I believe this conflict is the cause of the problem.
So help..how do I fix this dilemma?
I have Windows XP and see no way to change IRQs.
BIOS does not even show IRQ as a choice..only 1-15.  Also BIOS is latests version for my MSI 845G Max L MS-6580 mother Board.  USB drivers are all Intel.  Video Card Is MSI AGP MS-8878 G4Ti/MX 420 w TV out.  Bios and Drivers are current.
How can I run the USB 2.0 External Harddrive in Ports 3-6?

I did load new Intel INF Drivers and AGP drivers yesterday.
No luck USB Ports 3-6 still fail with External Hard Drive.
I'm not clear on how to turn back on AICP or ACIP.  BIOS?
Also not IRQs 16-23 are listed with active devices on the Device Manager
    16 has a USB Controller at 24c2
16 also has AGP video card
    17 has Audio '97
    17 also has Fast Eternet.
18 has USB Controller at 24c7
19 has USB Controller at 24c4
23 has PCI to USB Interface.
Port 3-6 do work fine with mouse, dig cam, Scanner, printer.  These ports only fail with External Harddrive plugged in.  Ports 1and2 work fine with external HD??
So question is how do I check on the IRQ ports using AIPC or APIC...or whatever the name is...thanks folks.

  • K450 USB Ports and Card Readers not working

When I plug in devices to my K450 ideacentre desktop USB ports, they are not recognized.  The same for a couple of memory cards I have tried in the card reader.  These are all working fine when put in other computers.  The card reader and USB ports do work when I insert a multi card reader into the USB port or a multi USB port into the USB port (and then use either of those to read the same external hard drive or memory cards that don't show up when installed directly).  Any idea what this could be?  I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing but I can't figure it out.  I'm running Windows 8.  Thanks for any help!

I wanted to add to this...I did plug in a CF card the other day and that was recognized.  I then tried my external hard drive directly again in a front USB port and it worked for a while (an hour or so).  Then it suddenly was not there anymore as if I'd ejected it even though I didn't.  Tried to put it back in and nothing.  This tells me it may be a hardware problem since it "recognized" it for a bit.  It's very frustrating.

  • Lost the keyboard backlight, use of my USB ports and camera shows as disconnected. How do I fix this?

Please help.  I'm still a MAC rookie.
I unplugged my Pedometer from one of the USB ports on my Macbook Pro.  Ever since then, I lost the backlight to my keyboard. I did some troubleshooting on these discussion boards and found a few with similar issues, but most of the discussions were old and the solutions were out of date.  As one of them advised, I checked to see if my Isight Camera was still connected and it wasn't. I also tried plugging a few different things into both USB ports and neither of them worked either. So whatever caused this, it's affecting all 3 of these things. I don't know if my Pedometer is old/bad and it "short-circuited" the USB port and everything else along with it when I unplugged it or if something coincidentally went bad at the same time that I removed it.
I read some old answers from the discussion boards where they suggested a Command (R) system recovery reboot.  But I also read that that really doesn't help on newer operating systems. I am on OS X.  Here is my Hardware Overview:
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro5,4
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.53 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.07 GHz
I did recently purchase a backup drive and I THINK I previously backed everything up properly. But, I can't even plug that into the USB port now to see if I
can somehow use that to fix this since the ports aren't working. I have no idea what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions?  Please!?
    Thanks in advance!

  • 17" MBP Left side usb ports and audio stopped working

    Hello All,
I have a situation here with my MBP. A couple months ago it stopped detecting my airport card (not installed), I replaced it with another one which still showed as not having a card installed. So, I have just been using a usb wifi adapter which has been working fine, but recently the 2 usb ports on the left side have stopped working as well as I lost any sound. I've tried with or without headphones, still no sound it just shows a greyed out speaker and a circle with a line through it when I try to adjust volume. My initial thought was that the left I/O board was bad, but the dc-in board continues to work which, I believe, is part of the left I/O board. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Is the machine at least 4 years old?  If it is symptoms you are getting is a sign the PRAM battery is about to go.  Get it replaced.  If not, try zapping the PRAM.

  • My USB port (closest to the screen) is not working? And what is an IR Receiver in my USB port?

    Hi everyone,
I recently found out that my USB port, closest to my screen, is not working. Before I called Apple Care for help, I performed a PRAM and a SMC RESET, which unfortunately did not work. I called Apple Care and they help me troubleshoot simple resets such as, shutdowns and restarts. The representative I spoke with conluded that the physical hardware has an issue and must be brought to the Apple Store for a diagnosis. I called the Apple Store to at least budget the fee for getting a USB port fixed and it's about $300.00. I never dropped my macbook or had any sort tactile encounterment with hard surfaces by dropping or hitting. I don't understand how my macbook pro would be physically damaged. I then thought maybe my software was out of date (right now I am running 10.9 Mavericks) or I forgot to do the minor software updates, but I was at a lost again because my macbook is up-to-date. I searched for further help and found a way to monitor what's plugged into my usb ports. (I read in the apple forums that a girl had nothing in her usb ports, but upon looking at the System Information> Hardware> USB, that the macbook recognizes that there are drives in the ports) I looked at my ports; one is being used by wirless mouse (the port that works) and the other (the port that doesnt work) is being used by an "IR RECEIVER". Now, is the IR Receiver actually using that port and that's why my macbook cannot recognize other devices inserted into that port? Or is the IR RECEIVER suppose to be in that port and that the hardware for that port is simply damaged (which would mean I need $300.00 to get that fixed)? I know this is a lot, but someone help me?

I can help with the "IR Receiver" part of your question. That's the piece of hardware inside older MacBook Pros (MBPs) that lets them work with the Apple Remote. "IR" is the standard abbreviation for "infrared," the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum used by remotes for many common devices (stereos, cable boxes, Apple TVs, etc.). The remote sends a coded stream of IR pulses; a corresponding receiver in the target device "sees" the infrared light and decodes it. The MBP's internal IR Receiver sends the received signals to the processor via USB through an internal hub.
The most recent MacBook Pros have dropped the IR receiver and no longer work with the Apple Remote.

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:
