My user preferences are gone after restart

I use Mac OX 10.8.2 suddenly my user preferences are set to default everytime I reboot my MacBook Pro.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it, then drag or copy it — do not type — into the Terminal window:
find . $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Press return. The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "35." Please post it in a reply.

  • Settings are gone after restarting computer

    After I'm restarting my computer my settings are gone. I'm not sure if all of them, but this is what I need to change:
    - all toolbars are enabled (in standard setting I don't have everything on all the time)
    - my start pages are not the same
    - FF behaviour after restart is not the same
    - my default download directory is not as it was before.
    What is more - if I'm closing FF and then opening again without restarting my computer - everything is fine. It is just happening after I'm restarting my computer. It is like some settings are removed after restarting ...
    It start happening after upgrade ...
    What's more - I'm usually putting my computer in stand by or hibernate mode, so it can be caused by that. I'm restarting computer only if needed ...

    This just happened to me again. And I do not understand the reply you gave me. I just want all my tabs & groups back. Can you tell me in less technical terms how to fix this?

  • My Finder / User preferences never saved after Restart. Help!

    After a "successful" back-up from Time Machine (thanks, Time Machine), my files seem to all be here, but my Finder and basic Application preferences have never been the same since.
    My MacBook Pro 17" hard drive crashed. I had an authorized Apple repair replace it with a new drive. I restored my set-up via Time Machine as instructed and was happy to see I was (mostly) back in good shape.
    What HASN'T been the same since - when I RESTART:
    - Whenever I shut down/restart, my desktop will always revert back to the last "mode" pre-crash. For example, one same folder is always open, as it happened to be the folder opened during the crash. Now, no matter what I seem to have opened on my desktop before I shut down, that other "old" folder always greets me after a restart.
    - Many applications I notice do not "remember" the last settings changed/used, always reverting to the "pre-crash" setting. Notable examples:
    - iChat settings (buddy icon, status, etc.) must ALWAYS be manually adjusted when I open iChat now.
    - iTunes and iPhoto are a big drag to open, because I must always "find" my libraries. They have long been moved to an external drive, but these iApps always ask me to locate them or create new ones. Even if I attempt to change my preferences.
    - Dock: the settings/icons revert back to the "pre-crash" version, and since I have updated many Apps, several icons show the Question Mark symbol, as some old Apps are long gone.
    I tried Disk Utility, repairing permissions. It recognized many inconsistencies and problems,
    but the repairs never seem to "stick."
    Again, this happens each time I restart/reboot.
    So if I only put my MacBook to sleep mode, it does fine when it wakes up,
    and remembers desktop settings, iChat settings, etc.
    Therefore, I only rarely shut down now, to avoid my Groundhog's Day syndrome.
    This is annoying. Help Me. Someone. Please.

    Apparently the previous preferences were copied over by TM.
    First it would probably be a good idea to start up from the install disk and run Disk Utilities’ Repair Disk. If you don’t know how to do that, reply back for specific directions.

    Because it appears to be preference files that cause the problem, you can begin removing them from the Preferences folder. These .plist files can be moved to the Desktop and the system will recreate new ones in the Preferences folder. If removing the .plist file doesn’t help, the one on the desktop can be moved back into the Preferences folder to replace the newly created one.
    Locate the Preference folder by this path:
    Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences
    (where “yourusername” is the short name of your computer, like hawaii - the folder looks like a house/home)
    Often users confuse the above path with Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences. That is not the one needed. The correct one is the Preference folder in the Users home folder.
    The same folder appearing after restarting is related to the Finder, so move the file named com.apple.finder.plist to the Desktop and restart. If that helps preventing the same folder appearing, you will need to reset all your Finder preferences. If not, you can return the old .plist file from the Desktop back to the Preferences folder and will need to look for another solution.

    Each of the above has its own .plist file(s) in the above named Preferences folder.
    It’s probably best to quit the applications before removing the preferences. Try moving the main .plist files, i.e., com.apple.iChat.plist to the desktop and restart iChat. If it doesn’t help, remove the other .plist files related to iChat. They will be replaced by the system. Some newly created .plist files don’t function until after a restart (like the Finder one described above). I don’t think iChat, iTunes, etc., require a restart, but it couldn’t hurt. If this helped with iChat, do the same procedure for iTunes, Dock, and any others giving you problems.
    If these do not help, you may need to consider an Archive & Install.
    I tried Disk Utility, repairing permissions. It recognized many inconsistencies and problems,
    but the repairs never seem to "stick."
    As long as the permissions inconsistencies include “Permissions differ,” SUID or ACL warnings, you can probably safely ignore them. But there is a .plist file for DiskUtility as well, which you may want to replace by moving it to the Desktop and restarting. If at the end of Repair Permissions it says “Permission Repair Complete,” it’s probably okay.
    Again, this happens each time I restart/reboot.
    So if I only put my MacBook to sleep mode, it does fine when it wakes up,
    and remembers desktop settings, iChat settings, etc.

    Here’s hoping for an UNGroundhog’s Day.

  • After restart, all user settings are gone and reset to defaults

    Hi after waking up my iMac from sleep today, it appeared something had gone wrong (apps not responding…notification that my external drives had "not been ejected correctly" etc). I restarted. After restart, and logging back in to my regular user account, all user settings were missing and reset to factory defaults: Desktop reset to the "wave", Dock reset, Download folder missing (grey question mark), Dropbox unable to connect, Safari bookmarks missing (but still on my iPhone-- so it's a local iMac problem, not an issue with iCloud), small things like mouse scrolling prefs reset etc.
    Basically all of my user preferences are missing. I've seen a number of threads about how to fix some of these items individually, but seems like there is a single corrupt preference file somewhere maybe?
    I've repaired permissions a few times (there were a lot), and restarted but nothing has fixed it yet.
    I had been logged out of iCloud, but once I logged back in, my Mail came back (just my me.com account-- still missing my Gmail, will need to reset I guess), along with Calendar and Contacts-- those are ok.
    I keep all my files on an external LaCie RAID, and that all appears to be fine. Folders all intact etc.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks for your help!

    Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

    After I delete my message, it goes to the trash. I have changed the preference to go to the new folder and not automatically delete the messages after 30 days, but they are not working. My messages are gone after 2 weeks and not in any folder. Please help!

    Have you checked the settings and preferences on all your devices that sync your mail, if your mail is set to be removed after two weeks on any device, then that action will be synced across all of them.

  • Getting Lync enable users who are modified after specified time

    Getting Lync enable users who are modified after specified time
    Hi,
    I need to get all the Lync enabled users from Lync 2010 server who are modified after specified time.
    I have written a client with this below code for my purpose
    string
    dateString = "11/4/2014 11:19:10 PM";
    DateTime
    lastModifiedTime = DateTime.Parse(dateString, System.Globalization.CultureInfo.InvariantCulture);
    PSCommand command = new PSCommand();
    command.AddCommand("Get-CsUser");
    command.AddParameter("Filter",
    "WhenChanged -gt " + lastModifiedTime.ToString());
    powershell.Commands
    = command;
    Collection<PSObject> outPut = powershell.Invoke();
    But on calling Invoke method I am getting the below exception,
    Cannot bind parameter 'Filter' to the target. Exception setting "Filter": "Invalid cast problem for value: "11" type: "System.Nullable`1[System.DateTime]" query: "WhenChanged -gt 11/4/2014 11:19:10 PM" "17""
    Can anyone please point me what am I doing wrong.
    This command
    Get-CsUser -filter {whenchanged -gt
    "11/4/2014 11:19:10 PM"}
    when run directly on Windows Powershell works fine.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sandeep

    It appears you may be casting the date variable wrong.
    If you have
    command.AddParameter("Filter",
    "WhenChanged -gt 11/4/2014 11:19:10 PM"
    And avoid the lastModifiedTime.ToString() addition, does it work?
    If so, it's just the way you're doing your date manipulation.
    Also, why convert from a string to a datetype and back for the datestring?  Are you trying to correct a timezone issue?

  • System Preferences Not Saved After Restart MBP 10.6.8

    Hi Everyone,
    I've had a difficult time finding an answer to this question / problem that I can understand, and I'm hoping someone can help me. (The IT department where I work has not been able to help.)
    Whenever I need to restart my MacBook Pro, a bunch of my preferences are lost. For example, I have to drag Google Chrome back in the dock. I lose my Expose preferences, login items I've disabled still pop up. Keyboard shortcuts with Spotlight (which I keep disabled because of a program I use), get set to default.
    It's terrbily frustrating to have to reset all these things over and over again and I can't find the answer. Part of it is I'm not terribly saavy with computer language. I can find the Terminal and type in commands though. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. I'll try whatever I need to.

    Sounds like you might have a series of corrupt preference (.plist) files, or else more problems.
    likely a corrupt
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist  and a  com.apple.dockpreferences.plist files in your User/Library folder
    However it might not be just that alone

  • Recovered files gone after restarting Muse after Update

    Muse quit unexpectedly while I was working on several websites in that were in recovery mode.  When I restarted Muse, it told me that an update was available. After restarting Muse after the update, it did not attempt to recover the files that I was working on. Are the changes that I made lost forever, or can I find them stored somewhere on my computer?  I have a current time machine back up.  Will that be helpful?

    Muse does not recover files from older versions of Muse.
    The Muse team recommends you save any work in progress before updating Muse to a new version.
    If you have a timemachine backup of the recovery files and the unsaved changes are important to you, you should be able to recover them by doing the following:
    1. Look for the Muse recovery files in your time machine backup. They should be here:
    /Users/your-user-name/Library/Preferences/AdobeMuse/Local Store/Recovery
    Restore that folder to just before you did the update to Muse version 6.
    2. Uninstall/delete Muse 6
    3. Install Muse version 5.0 from here: http://labsdownload.adobe.com/pub/adobemuse/builds/muse_5-0_update_mac.dmg
    4. Launch Muse version 5. Do not update. It should recover your files.
    5. Save your file(s)
    6. quit Muse, launch again, update to version 6.

  • Shortcuts, workspaces & preferences are gone in CC 2014

    I'm VERY disappointed with Adobe's CC 2014 release.
    I started up Photoshop and while the program boots fast, opening files is VERY slow!
    Photoshop asked to import old preferences and workspaces but no shortcuts that i've customized. Had to redo all of those.
    Illustrator didn't ask to import anything so ALL my workspaces are gone, ALL my custom shortcuts are missing and other custom preferences are missing.
    Dreamweaver won't even open
    All of my Wacom Tablet preferences are set to CC applications and not CC 2014 apps. So I'll have to redo all of those now too.
    This all seems so familiar! It's just like migrating from CS3 to CS4, then to CS5.5 and CS6 and then again to CC.
    I thought this was all supposed to be eliminated by going subscription based? That way there would only be ONE application of each from now on and each upgrade would be in the form of smaller updates.
    As someone that's been a long time advocator of the Creative Cloud over it's predecessors, I'm finding myself withdrawing from all the benefits of the subscription based plans if this continues year after year. Just as it has in the past.
    I admit, the new features in the programs i've been able to use are very good. But the hassle involved with getting them is making me feel like it wasn't even worth it.
    Things need to change! I guess the ad Adobe put out should have said "Everything new is new again, but the experience is old again".
    RANT OVER

    I'm jumping on this bandwagon.  Upgraded to CC 2014 over the weekend and it blew out all of my workspaces and settings.  What's the point of having a sync setting when it syncs NOTHING!!!!!  Not once have I gotten this "feature" to work correctly.  I, too, have been singing the praises of Creative Cloud, but when it comes to new releases Adobe still has a ways to go for a seamless transition.  I've gotten to the point where I just screenshot my workspace and save it so I at least have a reference point.  Please, Adobe, fix this!!!

  • My draft emails are gone after Maverick update... is there a way to bring them back?

    After the Maverick update all the draft emails are gone in mail... is there a way to have them back?

    If your main account is gmail follow the instructions below:
    Quit Mail.app.
    Log into Gmail in your favorite web browser.
    Click on the gear menu and select Settings.
    Click on the Labels tab.
    Under System Labels, next to Drafts, click on show if unread and uncheck the Show in IMAP box. Now disable Store draft messages on the server.
    Launch Mail.app.
    Select Mail → Preferences…
    Click on the Accounts button in the toolbar.
    Click once on the account name and then click the Mailbox Behaviors tab.
    Uncheck the Store draft messages on the server box.

  • Changes in Bundle.js file are disappear after restarting the UCM

    Good Day,
    I add some javascript code in bundle.js file within the following path: domain_home\ucm\cs\weblayout\resources\bundle.js .
    the changes are reflected fine on the UCM, but once the UCM Server restated the changes are gone and the file revert back as is; without my changes.
    the code that i want to add is:
    if ((typeof Range !== 'undefined') && !Range.prototype.createContextualFragment) {
    Range.prototype.createContextualFragment = function(html) {
    var frag = document.createDocumentFragment();
    var div = document.createElement('div');
    frag.appendChild(div);
    div.outerHTML = html;
    return frag;
    i want to add it because i have a javascript error like this: Object doesn't support property or method 'createContextualFragment', this erro occured when the used version of Internet Explorer is V.9. ; no javascript errors appears on Version 8. when i add this piece of javascript to the bundle.js file, it the error is gone and everything goes fine, but as i said earlier after restarting the UCM the added javascript code is gone and disappear from the bundle.js file.
    For that reason i want to ask, is there is a way to keep my code and stay as is even after restarting? Or is the file uploaded on restart from another path?
    Any Suggestions?

    This is actually quite simple to explain:
    - domain_home\ucm\cs\weblayout\resources is a directory that holds runtime version of resources
    - if you want to make your changes persistent, you will need to do it in a source directory. In 11g there are two source directories; one for standard components, and the other for custom ones. You should use the latter
    - in fact, if you create a custom component with Component Wizard, make your changes there and activate the component, you should be done. The only another thing you should pay attention to is the loadOrder parameter of your resource - it should be higher to get applied.

  • All messages are gone after deleting some text messages iOS8

    Hi guys!
    I've got a quiet annoying issue. Don't know if that is the hardware or software problem. I've replaced my 6 plus because of camera problems, and after that each time I try to delete ANY message from message app, app just crushed, and each time you're opening it it shows you empty inbox plus "new iMessage" window. That's not the end. Closing the app doesn't solve the problem. All of contact are gone in the same time so iMessage, phone call stop working. The only solution is restart the phone. Open the message app, close it again and open. But all of deleted messages are restored...
    Any ideas how to solve the problem?
    Erase content and restore from backup doesn't work, plus new update has been released today - still the same problem.
    Thanks for the answers!
    Adam.

    Hello Adam,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Given your previous troubleshooting, the next step for this issue is to reinstall iOS.  If that doesn't work, then the next step is to restore to factory settings.  To reinstall please follow the directions outlined below.
    Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
    Put your device in recovery mode.
    When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
    If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
    Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
    Have a good one,

  • Pictures are gone after iOS 8 update

    After the iOS 8 update, I went to my picture gallery and all but 43 of my pictures are gone. I've gone to Photos --> Collections and still, only those 43 images are there. Where did my pictures go and how do I get them back?

    You should be storing everything on your computer.  Just sync them to the iPhone.
    Did you update without making sure that you had imported everything to your computer?
