My verizon iphone 4 is having 3G issues

Here is my problem and it's rather annoying. I live in NYC, until a week or so ago my phone was fine. Now I am often having no data even though I have full bars and 3G displayed on the phone. It's frustrating because emails are not coming in, you can't access the web or any app that uses data. I called Verizon yesterday to ask them about the problem and she said the phone is probably still trying to connect to a certain tower that is no longer available. I was instructed to dial *228 (call) then press option 2. Sure enough it fixed the problem, except that later on when I moved from one location to another by either cab or subway, it happens again. I think it has to do with either the latest 4.2.7 update or the carrier settings. Luckily I was able to get on Time Machine and go back to March to pick up the old carrier settings and restore, I have no idea so far if this will fix the problem. Anyone else having the same issue?

well it turns out that downgrading my carrier settings to the previous version fixed the problem. I hope no one else is having this problem and if you are, report it so that Apple or Verizon can fix it. When I was having 3G connection issues (phone would lock on a particular tower apparently) I had carrier settings version 10.1. I downgraded to 9.5 via time capsule /Users/YOURNAME/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support and restore the ipcc file. Then sync your phone (you don't have to restore your phone. Later you will be warned that there is an update to your carrier settings available, DECLINE to upgrade.

    This is not a question or help topic but more of an announcement. Here's my story:
    I preordered the phone on it's February 3rd date and recieved the phone on February 7th. I did as Apple instructs when you get a new idevice (drain the battery down till it dies then recharge it to 100%.) I did that and began to use it, and keep in mind this was not heavy usage at all. I didn't have any app store apps installed at all, I set all settings in the phone to the best configuration for battery saving (truning off push notifications, turning off location services for apps you do not need, no bluetooth, no VPN, brightness at 33%, ect.) Now I thought the battery was strange as I had made my first phone call on 100% battery and it was a 5 minute call. I kid you not I lost 10% battery from one phone call. I thought that was rediculous so I went into my local verizon store and had it replaced. I did the same as I did last time and let the battery drain till it died and filled it to 100%. Tried the phone out and still had the same issue. I went back in and got my 3rd iphone 4. Did the same steps as before and drained then filled it. Yet again, I still had troubles with 3 phones in a row. I cantacted apple and got in contact with an apple engineer named Andrew. He sent me a file that they created that monitors what all is being used by the battery and monitors background processes and applications. I let that run for 24 hours and sent the battery loggin file back to Andrew. They reviewed the log and gave me a call the next day. They told me they did find some very significant battery draining and advised me to go to the nearest apple store ASAP and have the phone checked out. I drove 2 hours to the nearest store for them to just tell me the phone is fine (yotta yotta yotta) and they did a hard reset and restore on the phone (which I could have done from home on my computer and save the gas they made me waste driving for a total of 4 hours!) I tried contacting Andrew agiain but Andrew did not reply to any email sent to him nor return my calls. I got the point that he didn't want to deal with me anymore so I then decided to go the Verizon route. I called Verizon tech support and was transferred to a teir 2 representative. I told her my story, how many replacements I had, and how bad the battery life was. I told how my grandmother has an iphone 4 and I sat down comparing the 2 (battery life wise) and she chewed me out saying things like, "How dare you compare AT&T and Verizon!" I didn't want to listen to her chewing me out so I hung up. The next day I gave apple a call once again and they told me things I had already heard several times so I hung up. I called Verizon back and they said ok let's send you a replacement phone. Well the replacement phone came and wouldn't ya know it? The phone still had the same problem and on top of that they only sent me a phone. No box, no headphones, no USB cable, no charger. I called Verizon about this and asked why they only sent me a phone and they said, "Well you get to keep the phone but we want the other things back. The box, headphones, charger, USB cable, ect." I told them no and that they could have their refurbished phone back. This phone was not even refurbished. the reason I kow that is because it had someone's name written in the phone and it was still on 4.2.5. Had it been refurbished they would have done a fresh restore and update as 4.2.5 was deemed obsolete. That was very insulting in my opinion. So I sent that back and contacted apple one last time. I asked what other options I had as I was stressed and did not want to hear the same things I have already heard. they said they could send me a new phone free of charge and have me send back my current phone. I agreed to give it one last shot but I am still not confident that this phone will be any different.
    Now that's my story. Now let me go into a discussion. I have been doing my own litle "investigation on this phone to see what is making this phone drain so bad. I took a look at a report from iFixit.com and they revealed some pretty interesting things built into the Verizon iPhone. I am not going into detail about it but you can google it and see for yourself and read the article about the components. They built the phone with not only CDMA tech but also GSM. Now what purpose would that serve? Honestly? That is a big battery drainer right there. Secondly, they found that the phone contained a different model battery that was lighter and had less capacity than the GSM version of the iPhone 4. That's a second red flag. My mission right now is to get Apple's attention that these phones do indeed have aproblem and they need to be looked at because this just aint workin'. I have had several replacements done (all have the same issue), several thousands of people are reporting the same results with their battery on the web, and Apple chooses to ignore it. Something needs to be done and I encourage any Verizon iPhone user to take action and make this issue known. I have a website with contact information of people who work high up in the chain of Apple along with Scott Forstall's contact info. Go to http://idevicesupport.webs.com/apps/blog/show/6441029-update and find a contact you like and call it and deman that apple investigate these phones. We can get this issue resolved if we make it known. Don't be mean or nasty to them. They are very nice people but at the sametime don't let them talk over you. Make your voice heard.     So I've had the iPhone 5s ever since the release and around the first week I noticed it randomly restarted itself but everything was working properly so I let it slide by. However, ever since then my phone would freeze on what ever app/screen I was on and would not let me do anything. I'd press the home botton, nothing. Pressed the lock botton, still nothing. I was just stuck on that page and when I tried scrolling it would not let me. That has happened about 6 times now and it get's frustrating especially when you're trying to get information asap and your phone just stops working. It also has been in an app and it just randomly restarts the entire phone...
    A second problem I've been coming across lately is Siri will not work. The home botton functions (including fingerprint) but no matter for how long/short I hold down the home bottom, it just does not work. I disabled her then enabled her and still didn't work. So I restarted it and Siri come back.
    Simultaneously, I had issues w/my lock screen wall paper.  My lock screen is the first option (the night sky) but instead of portraying that, it's like a blue (w/diff shades) and no stars or "clouds." I restarted it a few times before I realized Siri wasn't working, and it would not come back. I mean it's not a huge deal I'm just wondering if this could be part of a bigger problem..
    So I don't know if these are just glitches or if something is actually messed up. Is anyone having any trouble like this? I mean I think I may take it to the Genius bar (I've video recorded 2 instances where the screen froze and another w/Siri & wallpaper not working just for proof) but I wanted to ask if there's some "solution" so I wouldn't be wasting their time.

    So, you would take your brand new phone that has all kinds of problems, over a refurbished one that may work perfectly?  I understand the principle, but I would not simply accept a phone that had all of those issues.
    Go to the store and ask if they have new ones in stock.  Show your problems, and perhaps they will exchange for a new one.  You should not have all of the problems that you have written about.
    I hope Restore works for you.  Otherwise, what is the point of keeping a new phone that does not function as it should?

  • Can an authorized user pick up a Verizon iPhone 5 at an Apple Store?

    Yesterday, a local Apple Store finally got the iPhone 5 I had been looking for in stock for Personal Pickup the next day.  When I received the email saying that the phone was ready to pick up, it also said at the bottom: "In most cases, the primary account holder on your wireless plan must pick up your iPhone. The primary account holder is the person whose billing information is linked to the wireless plan.  If you're upgrading or replacing an iPhone, however, another authorized user on the account may be able to pick up the order. Please contact your carrier to verify authorized users."  I've been searching around the Internet and only found articles about AT&T iPhones, but not Verizon.  I'm not authorized on the account but my mother, who is coming with me, is and my father is the account holder.  I know all the account info, and the phone was purchased in my mothers name.
    Will there be an issue picking up my Verizon iPhone without having the primary account holder there?  Has anyone else gone through this?

It is intermittent, so we don't know exactly when it will reoccur.  Absolutely no problem with data.  The data speed is great.

    I'm having the same issue as most of you on this forum. my current OS is 4.3.5 and after a factory reset, the camera started working fine, however, once i done the restore the camera reverted back to the same issue - "the shutter on the screen wont open, and the still/video switch just flashes" - what is more strange is, i have the HP home&biz app installed and this has a camera function and the camera seems to work fine with that, therefore suggesting there is nothing wrong with the hardware and this is a software issue. I'm currently awaiting a member of the Apple support team to call me about this, will keep you posted. BTW - someone suggested, going into Location Services and switching off the camera and apparantly, the issue was resolved for them, unfortunatly, this didn't work for me extremly odd issue indeed!

    Starting about 3 weeks ago, I stopped receiving text messages and even worse stopped receiving calls yet alone my voicemails.  I have changed not one thing to my phone, everything is exactly the way it was before the issues arised.  Now I have to trick my phone to receive my data by dialing into my voicemail...  And then what do you know, 30 text mesages, 12 voicemails!!!
    The voicemails wont even tell you the date or time stamp (the time the voicemail was received).  After numerous *228 and talking with level 2 over the holidays, I see a huge article on multiple news sites stating Verizon is having data issues...  Dropped calls, loss of data, no signal while all our phone keep showing full bars and 3g.  Verizon stated its only happening on there 4gLTE system and not 3G but thats a load of crap.
    All one has to do is a google search of loss of text messages or voicemails on Verizon and you will see 100's up to 1000's of users like you and me all experiencing the same issues.  And not just with Windows Phone 7, but with there baby Driod and iPhone as well.
    What really ****** me off is that Verizon loves to play the blame game or pass the buck game.  Hard Reset your phone and that will solve the problem...  Yeah Right.  If this was our OS and we updated a driver that changed the OS in the background I can see that being the solution.  But for the 100's or 1000's of users that go to work daily, check there emails and text daily, and haven't changed one thing on the phone... THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!
    Now I read an articile for someone extermely close to Microsoft stating that Verizon turned down Nokia's new 4GLTE phone because they have no faith in the operating system and I have to think that maybe behind the scenes Verizon is trying to force us off Windows Phone 7 platform with data issue behind the scene and try to get us all into the Droid Platform which they make 50% of the cash off the phone just like the iPhone...
    This is a joke, and I am really starting to think about going to ATT and getting the HTC Titan or the new Nokia 900.  I have already research a 3 party app that will allow you to backup and restore your phone.  And just read that Microsoft just put out an ad for backup, restore and cloud backup programmers for this latest feature.
    Verizon the games need to stop, Verizon you need to stand behind this Platform, Verizon you need to provide better service for all us 3G users!!!

    The screen does work though! Through trial and error along side a little troubleshooting, I was able to figure out that the screen will cut on after the phone dies completely. The phone has to die completely with no battery power left. Then if I plug the phone into a charge and wait a while for it to charge, the phone will turn on like nothing was ever even wrong with it. I charge the phone up to like 30% and turn it off then bam the phone turns on but the screen is solid black again.
    I am currently in the process of waiting for the phone to die and when I turn the phone back on I am going to completely remove the auto-lock and lock code off of the phone for the time being.
    Any other suggestions? Please help!

    Sounds like the device was dropped at some point and damaged as a result.
    Take it to Apple for evaluation and a replacement.

    I am having a issue with getting data useage alerts for my iphone 4s from AT&T.  I do not download anything huge at all.
    I looked into it and figured out that the phone dials out nightly at 12:29am every night.   I went into my settings and went to general..about..diagnostics and useage..then diagnostics and useage data to see this.  I then clicked don't send...but I am still getting useage alerts.  Can anyone help me please...

    Honestly, from reading the thread linked, they all come off as a bunch of whiney people that cannot be bothered to help themselves.
    Little to nothing in that thread indicates an issue beyond inept consumers.  Yes, I read several pages on the incessant gripes.  Very few made any actual attempts to troubleshoot issues before whining about the "Apple issue" and those that did actual troubleshooting got their issues resolved.
    So no, Apple has nothing to fix beyond a few specific devices that are experiencing hardware issues.
    If you have actually put forth effort and done the basic troubleshooting, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.  Whining will get nothing accomplished.

    I have already swapped this phone out once for a new I phone 6. First one I was having same issues with.
    Now I got the new one and it was good for about a month and now its doing it to but worse. It freezes completely.
    Won't let any of my text messages get through to me. All my messages disappear completely and randomly come back when they feel like it.
    This time its frozen where I can't even read any texts or get any texts and when I click on the messenger app it just goes to the NEW MESSAGE and won't let me get out of this screen. Should I once again take this back? or are all the iPhone 6's bad like this?

    It's not the iphones, it's more likely one or more of your programs causing this issue. It's not the iPhone 6's. The possibility of you getting 2 bad iphones from different batches is extremely remote or you have the worst luck on the planet. lol    If one iPhone has it, then you get a new one and the same problem comes up again, it's most likely due to an issue with a program that you keep getting back from restoring an old backup. Restore the iphone again and set up as a new iphone. Then manually import your music and your photos. Once that's done, try to use your iphone to see if everything is ok. If it works good for a few days, then try to add some of the apps. At some point, you'll end up loading the malicious app and the problem may come back. Make sure that the apps are all updated. If you still have problems, call Apple so that they can run a diagnostic report and find out which app is causing this issue. Then you can simply delete it and/or update the app. More solutions are available but that's all I will post for now.

  • After updating to iOS 5.0.1 iPhone 4 having some Apple ID issues on apps

    I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.0.1 and when I went to log in with my Apple ID it told me that I needed to have an email instead of a name for my Apple ID. So I went online and updated my ID to my email but now my phone says that I have apps that need to update but it still has my previous ID before I moved it to my email. I have tried going into settings and logging out and back in to the iTunes store but there is no change on those apps. For new apps I'm not having any issues at all so it looks like previous downloads before I updated.

    Have you tried this? Did/does it work? My problem is that I can no longer access my "old account".  When I use the IForget utility, I get nowhere using either the security questions or email reset instructions route. I wonder if the account is the same, the user ID just changes, but the old ID is not retained i any practical way, and therefore cannot not be summoned when running a security/password check. Does that make sense? So frustrated Right now since I cannot download my purchased apps and music.
