My volume keys aren't functioning correctly?

Well, I just got a brand new keyboard for my iMac, and it's a bit different from my previous keyboard.
My volume keys aren't working when I try pressing it, and the only way I am able to raise/lower the volume is by going to the top right hand corner and raise/lower the volume with my mouse.
It gets pretty annoying sometimes when I have to constantly use my mouse to raise/lower the volume, instead of just pressing two buttons on my keyboard.
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
Thanks!

Is it an Apple Keyboard?
If so what about pressing fn+VolumeUp/VolumeDown

  • Volume keys no longer functional?

the volume keys quit working on my wired aluminum keyboard this morning.
nothing new, just stopped wrking. other function keys seem to still be working.
    tested on 10.7 and 10.8.
tried installing keymap to see if the keys could be tricked into returning, but sadly, no. volume not working with the keyboard any longer.
this is a wired keyboard. F11 (volume down) now does some thing where it makes stuff on screen slightly larger to fill the screen.
I am suddenly surprised how often i use volume keys now that they do not work.

thanks, checked every possible combination to restore the volume keys using the keymap4macbook preference pane (what a dumb name, but it is free). working correctly again.

  • I have a 2013 mac pro and the volume keys aren't changing the volume of my LED display. The icon shows up as going up or down but the volume seems to not adjust.

I've had this computer since october of 2013 or so and I have just recently run into this problem. I use the volume keys on the keyboard and I hear the tick sounds and it shows that its going up and down but the volume doesn't actually change. I've looked in the "sound" settings and everythings seems to be correct... I can't adjust the sound in their either though. I pay too much to be having an issue like this.

Possible? Yes. Likely? I'm not sure.
In my house, I would suspect that either one of our pets chewed on a cable or dislodged a connector, or somebody bumped a connection loose, but then I would expect either no volume at all or hum from a grounding problem. Clear, non-zero constant volume is harder to explain.
You say adjusting the output volume directly in the Sound settings or on the menu bar also has no effect on the audible output?
You might want to go ahead and answer the question about connections. Somebody else might come along who recognizes a possible problem with the particular combination you are using. I don't have exactly your model of Mac Pro or display. (Is yours the Apple LED Cinema Display? Which size?)

  • In the expression editor dialog box my TAB key doesn't function correctly

This is bizarre behavior that seems to have started recently.
In Visual Studio 2012, an SSRS project, any expression editor dialog:
The tab key doesn't work right.
    Open the expression editor and:
    * I see a blinking cursor and I can type in the expression box.
    * If I hit the tab key, the cursor disappears and I cannot type.  I appear to lose focus in the editor but focus doesn't appear to go anywhere else in the dialog box.
    * If I hit the tab key a 2nd time, the cursor is still gone and I cannot type.
    * If I hit the tab key a 3rd time, I can finally type again and note that I am now
3 tabstops in.  In other words it seems like the tabs were working but I lost the ability to type anything until I "tab" 3 magical times.
I can work around this by hitting tab key then grabbing the mouse and clicking where the cursor SHOULD be which returns focus to the text area.

    Hi Bostaevski,
Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.
According to your description, as you said that the cursor disappears and cannot type issue. It seems that the issue may be not Visual Studio the VS IDE issue.
In addition, I find a similar thread about the
    Expression Editor Cursor Issue,
    please see:

Therefore, I suggest you could also try to press alt with left and right arrow keys and check if it is works fine.
    Thnank for your understanding!

  • After installing Mountain Lion on my Imac, volume keys and scroll function are disabled.

I just installed Mountain Lion on my 2 year old Imac and now the keyboard volume controls don't work and the scroll function on my magic mouse has stopped as well. All these were working fine until the install. I have seen other posts of people having the same problem but haven't seen any definite solutions yet. Really annoying "benefit" to upgrading.

For the mouse scrolling issue, check the setting in System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad > Mouse options... button > check Scrolling.

  • Arrows and Pg Up/Dwn keys no longer function correctly in firefox.

When in a browser, if I use the down arrow keys to move down the page, the page immediately goes to the bottom, instead of the next section of screen to be displayed.
The Pageup/pagedown buttons have the same problem - they go to the absolute top and absolute bottom of the screen instead of going to just the next section of the page to be viewed.
I have tested it and I do not have this problem in IE which makes me think it is not a setting on my particular machine (ie: scroll lock, etc) but more something is off in Firefox.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • My apps aren't functioning correctly.

after I did the 4.2 installation some of my apps haven't been functioning properly. Some don't open up and Im still waiting for the updates on apps...this is very frustrating...i tried downgrading and I cant even downgrade...

    HI,
Try contacting the app developer. That information should be available from the iTunes App Store. Just search for the apps you have installed on the iPhone, then look for the developer information.
Sometimes just restarting your iPhone can help. To restart iPhone, first turn iPhone off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPhone will turn off after a few moments. Now turn iPhone on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

    Crayolla,
Try doing a SMC and PRAM resets. Sometimes it takes 2-3 attempts for them to work so be a little persistent if they fail the first time.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Function keys are not working correctly

I've been looking all over the various threads and I can't find an answer that solves my problem.
    Here are the details:
I bought the computer in the U.S. where I live.
I have a iMac 2.4GHz intel Core 2 Duo  EMC 2133 with a 20" screen. Bought it new in February 2008.
I have Mac OS X 10.5.8  (I am waiting for my order for OS Snow Leopard to come in!!)
I have been using a wireless mouse and Keyboard (Love not having cords!)
Recently, my wireless keyboard got a short and quit working. I went down to the apple store and got a new wireless keyboard.
I had the computer with me at the genius bar so, yes, the apple employee saw exactly what I have.
I took it all home got the thing all put back together and got the new keyboard paired up and working with the computer.
    Here are the problems:
Went to go use the function keys while using iTunes and found they weren't working properly. The F10, F11 and F12 do not control the volume of sound as the keyboard indicates they would, they instead activate dashboard, spaces, and application windows.
Following the advice of other threads, I looked over in the system preferences and made sure the "Use all F1, F2 etc." box was unchecked (it was unchecked), things still didn't work.
I tried the fn key but it appears to not work at all it has no effect on the functioning of the function keys.
I went under keyboard shortcuts in system preferences and found the F10, F11 and F12 keys, it confirms that those keys control spaces, dashboard and application windows as they are performing but shows no options to either reassign to volume control (as marked on the keyboard) or make the fn key work.
I've gone back and forth trying various combinations of checked and unchecked boxes to see if anything would work, so far I've come up with nothing.
A couple more important or interesting facts:
Yes I have turned off and taken the batteries out of the old keyboard. My bluetooth connection currently shows it as disconnected.
    I have restarted the computer.
One thing I find odd; when I go under preferences and go to Keyboard and Mouse when I go under the section "Bluetooth" it shows Bluetooth mouse with the name of the mouse and the battery level. BUT nothing is showing up under bluetooth Keyboard, I can't figure out how to change this and don't know if it is contributing to the problem.
When I go under the bluetooth logo on the top bar I find the mouse and both keyboards referenced, the old keyboard is shown as disconnected and the other two are connected. I have tried to update the device's name but it doesn't seem to let me.
I have double clicked on the device under bluetooth and it shows the new keyboard as discoverable, paired and connected. Hence, I am using the new keyboard to write this inquiry.
Please, any assistance would be of great help. I have tried to be thorough in order help narrow the possible problem. Thanks!!

    Hendry
Just thought I'd let you know.  Our suspicions were correct, it was the OS. After I installed Snow Leopard (10.6.8) all the problems were corrected.  I also updated the RAM from 1 gb to 6 gb. The mac is working all around better. Sorry it took so long to get back to everyone. My superdrive had pooped out. Rather than replace it I got an external drive from OWC connected with firewire 800.  So far everything is running very well, as far as I can tell this external drive is better than the original superdrive. My superdrive has always acted funny, infact I returned the first mac I got after a week because its superdrive was also malfunctioning. Anyway, all that to say everything seems to be fully functioning again.

  • The volume keys on my Logitech K760 wireless keyboard do not work with my 2.3 GHz, Intel Core i5 Mac mini which runs Mac OS X 10.7.4. Anyone know how to correct this without having to re-code firmware?

My first post to the Apple Support Community so it looks like all I wanted to know is covered in the title. The research I have done led me to solutions that I am not comfortable trying for fear of irreparably damaging my keyboard and/or Mac mini. Does anyone have a simpler solution? Please? Hellooooo?
Just in case the title is too long to show, I have re-pasted here:

  • Aluminum Keyboard Function Keys don't work correctly

I just bough a brand new aluminum wireless keyboard and some of the function keys aren't working, from F1 through F7. F9 works like F3 should and F12 like F5. It's so bizarre. Otherwise the keys all work fine. I've updated everything, tried working through the forums workarounds on the aluminum keyboard, and so far it didn't work for my computer. I'm pretty frustrated. Has anyone figured out the solution? I'm running 10.6.7 and have updated all my software.

One last key combo to try, while holding SHIFT  fn  try toglling volume brightness... and see if that works. It'a been years since I've used anything but my built in keyboard.
At this point Run software update with the keyboard connected and see if there may be an update for that.
    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    try a pram reset:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery (not a portable Mac's rechargeable battery) may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.
If still no joy, contact Apple, or go to the store and find out what you may need to do, This was the bullet in my gun, I'm sorry I could not resolve this for you. It's probably something simple, or maybe your machine is too old to suport this device.
    Best of luck.
If they get you going, please post back so others may find out the fix:>

  • Option key not functioning correctly since 10.6.8

Since I upgraded to 10.6.8, my keyboard (first sllim version, extended) option key has not been functioning correctly or at all.
Here are just a few problems associated with it:
8 I can no longer make a bullet (option 8) as you see here
8 I can no longer shut down my computer using command option control eject. It restarts instead now.
8 I can no longer perform various keyboard shortcuts in Adobe CS5 apps that require using the option key.
    How do I fix this?

Either Pantone scheduler or Quicken 2007 caused the problem during login. Removal of these items (and an old version of Salling Clicker) fixed the problem.

  • HT3399 Function keys vs volume keys

I used to be able to use the "Show all windows" + "Show desktop" shortcuts and the volume keys all with one touch. Now with Mavericks it seems you have to choose, can't have both?? So frustrating. Any suggestions/workarounds?

I guess that's my criticism – if you select "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" it essentially disables one-touch volume control. You have to choose between one-touch Mission Control and one-touch Audio, which seems insane. Especially as new MacBooks only have one Function key on the far left side, making one-handed volume control impossible.
Am I missing something – is there a way to 'program' each of the F keys individually?
My solution for now is to program Option D for "desktop view" and Option W for "application windows" – so at least I can do it one-handed.
It sounds really nitpicky but this is the kind of intuitive stuff I thought Apple was good at!
