My Wacky iMac - EVERYTHING causes a reboot!

Well, maybe not quite everything; I can get online. BUT:
Adjusting the volume with the keyboard
Opening the combo drive with the keyboard
Trying to run Cro-Mag Rally
and a host of other things all cause the machine to reboot. We have 10.2.8 on the thing; I've tried to reinstall it, but, of course, every time I open the optical drive, blammo, instant reboot. Once the I've re-logged in, though, the drive doesn't seem to read the CD.
Ideas? I have an external optical drive that I might be able to read a CD with - can I reinstall the OS with an external drive?
Thanks -
did

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Before we make some suggestions could you please confirm whether the iMac actually powers off instantly and then restarts, or
whether the screen wipes down grey and then tells you that you must restart (Kernel Panic).
Was the iMac connected to the Mains when you had that power outage?
Thanks.

On my PC, in I-Tunes, the iPod (touch) button disappears every time I try to sync or update.  Everything has been rebooted, but no changes. Any ideas on how to sync to the IPod?  Better yet, how to keep the ipod button on screen when itunes is open and the ipod is connected?

    - Have you tried another USB port and cable?
    - Inspect the dock connector for bend or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

  • My iMac needs to be rebooted every time I put it to sleep

My iMac needs to be rebooted almost every time when I wake it from sleeping. Is this normal?  Ether the screen darkens and it will tell me to reboot by holding down the power button or the screen is just totally blank. It's been doing it for a long time and I thought it was just mac security updates running in the backgrownd or something but it seems to be getting worse.
    Thanks

    Do this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Imac froze then wont reboot.

My imac froze whilst my iphone was syncing.
It wont boot up past the apple and spinning circle logo.
I have left this for 15 mins and it still wont reboot.
I managed to get the install disc in and use the disk utility.
It gave me the following messages.
    Incorrect number of thread records.
    Invalid leaf record count
(it should be 2001211 instead of 2001210)
    Invalid volume free block count
(it should be 29872332 instead of 29872331)
It is now repairing the volume.
How long should this take and is there anything else I need to do so the mac will boot up ?

If it was me, before doing a full re-install, I would use a cloning utility (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) to duplicate the internal drive to the external drive. Then try booting from the external drive by setting it as the startup volume in System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane. This is a test to make sure it works and everything (especially your personal data) is there, like your internal drive.
If it runs smoothly (may feel a bit slower if that external is a USB drive) and those issues do not recur, the system may be fine. You can then use Disk Utility Erase tab to erase (reformat) the internal drive (be sure to select the internal DRIVE and not the volume indented below the drive in the Disk Utility sidebar). Then clone the external drive back it the internal drive. The reformat will get rid of the disk directory corruption error, so hopefully your previous system will work fine.
If the error caused problems with the system files (similar problems recur when booted from the external clone), you can do a full Mac OS X re-install on a freshly erased internal drive, then migrate your personal data from the clone on the external drive. In either case, the first step is to duplicate your internal drive to the external drive. The easiest way is to use one of those cloning utilities.
It is possible that there is a hardware problem with the drive. In most cases, the reformat will get rid of the problem, if it just corruption to the disk directory. You should monitor closely for a few weeks, because if the hard drive is starting to fail, a similar problem might happen again.

  • Tiger Install on iMac G3/400 DV reboot problem.

Hi there, first time post .
I obtained a slot loading G3/400 DV. I replaced the 10GB that was inside it, with a 80GB. It has aproximatly 320MB of RAM and does have firewire.
I believe the CD-ROM is toast, as it will not boot of a CD when 'C' is held down. I have managed to install OS 9 onto it, by transfering a clean install of 9 via firewire and upgraded it too 9.2.2. Everything worked fine. System boots fine.. etc..
I have just bought a DVD copy of Tiger for my Cube(needed 9 before for, my UD12X12 tablet). I read it is possible to install OS X via Firewire. I held down T and all that, and put X onto the 80gb via the DVD from the cube. Now, when I reboot the iMac I get a flashing folder with a ? on it, and will not rebbot on a Option hold down.
What am I doing wrong, please help.
PS: The previous HD, has a dual boot with OS X and 9; but it has a admin lock on it, and is only 10GB.
    Thanks
    Nexuz

I am not certain, but your 80 GB might be a machiine that requires X be installed on the first 8 GB's of a drive. You may need to partition.
Keep the machine in target mode, and see if the cube starts from the installation. This would be a good clue, if the install was good.

  • IMac hanging caused by Safari (I think)

Have been having problems with my iMac hanging which I think is caused by Safari.
Safari (5.1.7 )will be working OK and then hang with the spinning wheel. Am then unable to quit and finder hangs in turn and I end up doing a restart with the power button.
Have 1 external hard drive attached which is partitioned for Time Machine backup and iTunes library.
In attemt to address problem I have previously erased my iMac and reinstalled all software (from new rather than from Time Machine backup) and then reinstalled user files (but not application library files in case any of these were corrupted.
Problem is common to all users.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • For Experts: Why does LabView cause System reboot while accessing hardware with driver?

    Hello NI Developers!
I use LabView 7.1 under Windows XP
I have a programm console application which accesses through Jungo Windriver PCI-E board.
This program works fine - and performs DMA data transfer between PC and Board's memory.
In order to implement this console application work together with LabView I did following:
    1) Added this function inside the source:
     _declspec(dllexport) void LVMainFunction(uInt32 *IntValue);
    _declspec(dllexport) void LVMainFunction(uInt32 *IntValue)
        AllocConsole();                   //Open new console window
SetConsoleTitle(L"Debug Window"); //Set a title for console window
freopen("CONOUT$","a+",stdout); //redirec standard output stream to current window so
// so we are able to see "printf" outputs
freopen("CONIN$","a+",stdin);    //redirec standard input stream to current window so
// so we are able pass inputs from keyboard
main();                          //Call applications main function which does all the work
    2) Compiled this new source as DLL library
    3) Call  LVMainFunction(...) function from LabView using Call Library Node
In the result: Executing VI - opens new console window, shows debug outputs and receives keyboard inputs.
It works fine till the last function, which perform DMA data transfer - and reboots PC.
    1) Why does this happen?
    2) I understand that opening console from Call Library Node, attaches together this console window and running VI. So If I close one of them - both windows closes.
So does LabView have somekind of restrictions of accessing Hardware's functions?
I can read Board's resource information and view size of memory on board, interrupt functions and other information about device, but when I try to reach
DMA my system reboots. And I understand that this should be some kind of LabView problem, cause I tried different implementations, even without use of
console window - and the result is the same.
    3) Should I split the program in to two separate processes and perform data exchange using Sockets or Pipes techology?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hello!
    At LAST!!!
    I solved this problem!
From the beginning I was following National Instruments manual on how to build DLL with external IDE:
      http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361A-01/lvhowto/building_library_project/
Set the Struct member alignment control to 1 Byte.
Now this option caused my PC to reboot!
So could someone explain  why this happened? and If it is a bad tip, so it's better to remove from manual. Then other people will not have such problems as I did
    - wasting 2 monthes of time determining the problem.
I changed it to  Set the Struct member alignment control to DEFAULT.
    and now everything works fine.
    Regards

  • Nearly Everything Causes a Total Freeze!

Today I was downloading an album from the iTunes store when OSX suddenly froze. I had to do a manual restart with the power button on my MacBook Pro.
Now, practically everything I do causes a freeze except for using my browser. Trying to eject an external hard drive -- freeze. Running "verify disk permissions" on the disk utility -- freeze. Opening iTunes -- freeze. Each time a hard reboot is required because option-command-escape has no effect.
    What should I do?

Yesterday I tried running the disk permissions repair again. This time my external hard drive was unplugged and it opened and ran fine. It found some problems and repaired most but didn't repair two:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/lppasswd" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I think the problem has to do with my external drive. The original crash happened when I was downloading music from iTunes, which were downloading to my external drive. Everything now seems to run normally on my MacBook, but the external drive (Western Digital MyBook) no longer mounts. I have about 300 gigs of music on that things and absolutely CANNOT lose the data. Anyone know what steps I should take to fix it? And should I be concerned about those error messages?

  • Imac pop sound before reboot

I have a 27in 2011 IMac. It has been rebooting at random for the last 2 months. I have tried everything. Sometimes it stays on for weeks and sometimes it will reboot 2 or 3 times in an hour. Today it made a "Pop" sound and then shut down and rebooted. (I have it set to reboot after a power outage.)There is nothing significant on the console and it does not seem excessively hot.  I am suspecting a bad power supply. Any other ideas??

Update:  I did the pram reset with a wired keyboard. It booted twice. It ran for a while then went to sleep when I left and wouldn't wake up.  I let it set for 4 or 5 hours unplugged then plugged it in. After I hit the power key a few times it came back on and I am using it so far. I am not sure if this was a power supply and the pram might have fixed it or it is just delaying the inevitable trip to the shop.
Is there any definitive test for a power supply for an Imac? It's not exactly accesible...

  • IMac, update causing black screen and randomly powers off...?

I've seen many comment on this with few solutions.  It had never occurred until yesterday afternoon after the latest security update for Mavericks, 2014-005 v.1, was loaded and the system was rebooted.  After that moment the mac has been unusable.  It will start and after user log on, will black screen, sometimes still running and other times instantly powered off.  I have followed resetting the PRAM, and SMC procedures with no change and have booted into safe mode in order to examine the system and it is just as unstable there.  The times I have gotten it booted and running, attempting to access an earlier Time Machine backup, but before I can start reload it goes black.  The same goes while trying to check the sleep mode and security settings.  Unless this is an amazing coincidence, I believe the latest update has caused this problem and has for others as I have seen on many conversations.  Can this be uninstalled or does the drive need to get wiped and then reload from the Time Machine?
    Thanks.

Well, initial call into Apple Care and one answer.  "We have no idea what it is, we can get you an appointment at a Genius Bar in 4 days!"  4 days?!  Seriously?  At least they were kind enough to only put me on hold for 30 minutes, AND then transferred me to a "Sr. Care Specialist" who basically blew smoke up my arse only to tell me the same thing... why transfer me at all?

  • After ICS update, WiFi widget causes phone reboot

After installing the ICS update on my Xperia PRO USA unlocked model via PC Companion... when I turn off WiFi using the widget, it does so - it turns it off. When I use the widget again to turn WiFi back on, it causes my phone to reboot.
I don't seem to have this problem if I turn WiFi on and off inside the WiFi settings area. But using the widget is now broken for me.
    Anyone else?
When I use this, to turn WiFi back on, the phone reboots:

My iMac is not rebooting. The spinning wheel icon on the screen is continuously spinning but the computer is not starting. What should I do?

If none of this helps, what version of OS X are you running? We need this info in order to offer ideas for other measures.

  • WPS button press causing full reboot

Since the firmware upgrade I've had the same issues as most others with the repeated wifi drop outs.  This has been resolved with the rolled out patch.
However, I use a Samsung printer connected via WPS. This has always worked well.
Since the upgraded firmware the WPS no longer works and when I press the WPS button on the HomeHub 5 it causes a full reboot following the end of the 2 minute waiting period. This is independent of whether I have tried to connect the samsung or not.
Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas how to fix?
