My WD elements external hard drive has slowed down so much since upgrading - PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I am in external hard drive **** - someone please help!
I use my external hard drive as my music drive, and since upgrading to mountain lion something has gone wrong, and I have no idea what.
Basically it is incredibly slow at everything - appearing in finder, showing its contents, and copying from or to it. This is a problem that has only happened since my upgrade. I have tried to verify and repair it, but each time this happens it simply tells me every thing is OK! The only message I get is
'Updating boot support partitions as required.'
But this happens each time! I have no idea what this means (i am happy in my ignorance about computers most of the time)
I dont think that there is a problem with my hard drive, because I have seen the speed of my USB memory stick reduce in this time too, and if I leave it connected for long enough, it eventually finds all my files and folders and I can use them just fine. Its as if my USB ports speeds have all degraded very fast, for no particular reason. It has to be something to do with mountain lion...
Anyway, any ideas guys and gals? Please help me!

Basically I thought that mackeeper would keep everything nice and clean...
That's what the con-artist developer wants you to think, and it's the exact opposite of the truth.
How to maintain a Mac
1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
2. Keep your software up to date. In the Software Update preference pane, you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. This is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible.
3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” “extenders,” “cleaners,” “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this kind of material is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
The free anti-malware application ClamXav is not crap, and although it’s not routinely needed, it may be useful in some environments, such as a mixed Mac-Windows enterprise network.
4. Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until sometime in 2011, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. A website that claims you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, is rogue.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most users don't.
5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Mac notebooks that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem. While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage consumption and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
Use a tool such as the free application OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move rarely-used large files to secondary storage.
6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” “running periodic scripts,” “deleting log files,” “scanning for viruses,” or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are for solving problems as they arise, not for maintenance.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • External hard drive problems!!!!!! please help!!!!

I recently purchased a 250 gb external HD...i did use it for some projects....but now, once i plug it into the mac notebook it says the drive is not readable by the computer..and have the options to initialize, ignore, or reject. once i initialize it goes to the disk utility...it appears there but the repair disk permissions is not highlighted.......what should i do..please help!!!

    D.S.R.,
You can only "Repair Permissions" on a volume that contains an installation of OS X. If you have formatted the drive, it should be completely accessible to you, and no repair of permissions are needed.
It sounds like you encountered a disk error on that drive that made it necessary to format (erase) it. One possible cause of disk errors is an improper disconnection of the drive. Have you been disconnecting it or powering it off without first ejecting (unmounting) it?

One of the folders on my external hard drive has transformed into a unix executable file and I can no longer access my files. Is there any way to save the data?

Wow, have seen Files do that, but a whole Folder as I recall!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • My external hard drive has disappeared

My external hard drive has disappeared from the 'open file' window in photoshop CS6. It's working fine and appears in other applications such as bridge and lightroom. How do I get it back? I'm running a Mac on OS X.

You may have accidentally dragged the drive out of the Devices list in the sidebar.
In a Finder window with visible sidebar, do Shift+Cmd+G to get the Go To Folder dialog. Enter
    /volumes
    then click OK.
You'll see all your mounted volumes in the Finder window. Drag the required one to the Devices list in the sidebar.

  • External Hard Drive has failed!! How do I get a copy of my Photos off Apple

My Western Digital external hards drive has failed. None of the data can be recovered. I basically held my music & photo collection. Most off my music is still on my iMac so no problem there. However, I has moved my entire photo collection onto the External Hard Drive. The only way I can recover it is to copy the photos that I (fortunately) copied onto my Apple TV. The question is how Do I do this?
There must be some whizzy piece of software out there that can do the job?

  • How can I find out which mac format my external hard drive has

I have a PD LaCie drive.  I had formatted it about a month ago, but now reading several posts, it appears that the best format is mac OS extended (journaled).  I am not sure if that is the one that I had originally chosen.  How do I find out which format my external hard drive has?
    Thanks.

Select it on the desktop or in the Finder's sidebar and choose Get Info from the File menu. If it doesn't show up in either location, check the settings in the General and Sidebar tabs of the Finder's preferences.

  • My Lacie external hard drive has a life of its own

    Hi,
I've had my Lacie External hard drive for about 4 months and i have a recurring problem, it wont always show up in finder or on the desktop.
It shows up in disk utilities just fine, but stupidly the first time this happened i didn't know that you could right click and "open" it from disk utils, so i panicked and reformatted the hard disk, obviously losing everything inside.
Since then i have learnt from my mistakes and now when it vanishes (when i start up the computer it just randomly doesn't appear...) i just open via disk utils. But this isn't fair! It should appear EVERY time its switched on and plugged in. Thats what i paid for.
I issued a ticket with Lacie but with lots of trial and error they were able to tell me that is was more likely my imac and not the external hard drive. I am crossing my fingers hoping for help here!
Thank you for any help/advice in advance! Charlie

  • How do I know if my back up to a external hard drive has worked?

    Hi,
I have completed a back up of my Elements12 catalog to a external hard drive but when I try to view them they have been saved in all sorts of different ways. Some of them are GOM media files which will not open at all.
Some say SYNCDB or CACHE or PREF files which tell me I need an app to open, others are XML Documents which just show lists of data. The list goes on...
Everything opened OK in the Elements program but how can I find out whether or not it has backed everything up if I cannot open or access these files that Elements has copied to my hard drive?
I am completely lost. Before I had elements I just copied my photo and video folder to my ext hard drive and everything worked,no messages saying this file needs an app or that video file cannot be opened!
    Help

The most important thing to understand is that Organizer backups are not simple copies and that they can only be used by the restore function of the Organizer.

So, the simple answer is that you are expected to see the message at the end of the process stating that the backup has been successful.
If you are skeptical, I am afraid the only 100% way is to do a restore and see if everything is ok.
One thing I always do (and recommend) is to see if you can find a file named 'backup.tly'. It's the last created and contains everything necessary to restore your catalog and your picture files, even if you choose to restore on another location.
I am completely lost. Before I had elements I just copied my photo and video folder to my ext hard drive and everything worked,no messages saying this file needs an app or that video file cannot be opened!
You can have a copy of your pictures folders, but that's not enough. You should also have a copy of your catalog folders (location : menu Help/system info). And if you restore to another computer, that's not enough either : all your files will be shown as disconnected... good luck with the reconnection process. Believe me, use the organizer backup/restore system, at least when you want to migrate to another computer, drive or OS!
Since we are never too sure about backups, a good solution is to use your prefered copy or sync system regularly AND to do full organizer backups periodically or when you want to upgrade.

  • My external hard drive has stopped working on my MacBook Pro

    Hi guys,
So my hard drive, which was working earlier today, no longer registers when I plug it into my Mac. It flashes once and then stops, and it does not appear anywhere on my laptop. It still works in other laptops so I know it is not dead and other USB drives etc still register on my laptop.
I have read through the other discussions but nothing quite fits my situation. If anyone has any sort of information or advice that may help, I would very much appreciate it! Thank you.

Basically my external hard drive would not eject so i force quit it and the hard drive does not come up at all anywhere on my mac pro OS X version 10.9.4 and it isn't visible in disk utilities no and it doesn't say format either and i have tried it on a windows computer it does not show on their either. the format is Fatdos i think so i can use it on windows and mac and i cant see anything in system reports and yes it is connect by a USB. also it isn't making any noises either

  • External Hard drive has disappeared from fcpx

    Hey guys,
I know this question comes up a lot so I'm suprised to say I've failed to find any fixes on other threads. Many people having the same issue say that the drive shows up temporarily in the events and project source windows but then disapear, this is not the case for me it just doesn't show up at all. I've put 90% of my fcp projects and events onto one external hard drive which is working fine with everything but fcp, it even recognises it if i want to import from the drive. It has been working fine up until now which is weird as I've not changed anything on it recently, the only thing I've changed is I used a client's drive to do the latest edit, which worked fine!
Someone must have found a solution to this problem by now, it's causing me a lot of trouble as I've got deadlines to meet and I'm being put out by what seems to be a ridiculous little bug, surely apple would have got onto a fix for this by now?? In the mean time all and any suggestions welcome!

Have you used it successfully with FCP X before? What content has changed in the drive?
I am assuming you checked all the usual things, but still it is worth taking a look again:
    1) Is it formatted as Mac OS extended?
    2) Did you add any folder titled something that may be thought of as a camera (folders like "AVCHD", "Private", "DCIM", "Video", ....)
    3) Are the folders called exactly "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects" and located at the ROOT of the drive?
It seems like you know all this, but still there may have been something you missed.

  • Copying data to time capsule from external hard drive too slow....

is there a way to make the transfer of data from a external hard drive that is plugged into the time capsule, transfer faster?
im transfering 11gb and it says it will take 3 hours to complete.
there must be a faster way to transfer all my data, in less time?
    thanks,

If you are copying any important information to the TC directly (example: iTunes library, iPhoto library, Movies), please make sure that you implement a backup solution for these files. The Airport Utility has an Archive function which will backup the entire TC to an externally attached USB drive.
For faster data transfer, you could try connecting your Mac to the TC with Gb Ethernet and than attach the external USB drive to your Mac. I would expect a Mac connected drive to transfer faster to the TC (faster than a USB drive connected to the TC) as the Mac has much more memory and compute power.
You could connect the drive to your Mac and observe the transfer rate before waiting 3 hours on the other configuration.

  • WD Elements External Hard Drive: No Sleep Issue

    Hello,
I know this probably isn't the best place for this as it's not directly related to an iMac. But it works.
I have two WD Elements (http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=304&lang=en) external hard drives that I use for a Time Machine and for a Media drive. I've got them plugged into a Belkin Powered USB Hub (http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW306LL/A) which is then of course attatched to my iMac. My issue is that the two hard drives seem to continue to work at full power once I've shut my computer off.
Is there anyway I can have them go into sleep mode?
I was considering splicing a switch onto the power cord of the USB Hub so that I could easily turn it off once the computer is off. However that seems a bit silly?
Thank you for your time, and opinions,
    Robin

Thanks for the suggestion. I can't believe I didn't think about that as I knew about it.
It seems to have helped when the computer is on. I can see that at some points they are working a lot less, which is great. So thank you.
Unfortunately they seem to be still working at full power them the computer is off. I figure this is because they are not directly attatched to the computer itself so nothing is telling them to "sleep."
