My WDS (with WEP encryt) relay station shows "No ethernet connection" error

I have a WDS with two airport extremes (one is base station and one is relay) and an airport express as the remote to the relay station. When using WPA/WPA2 everything is OK. When I switch the three stations from WPA to WEP encryption (needed for my new "Pronto" remote), the airport utility shows the relay (airport extreme) with a yellow error button and the actual relay station flashes yellow. The airport utility explanation is that "nothing is connected to the ethernet WAN port" on the relay station. Meanwhile, the remote (airport express) to the relay station has a green light and shows no errors.
Also, my Nokia N95 setup wizard shows the network as WPA/WPA2 even though all the three components are set to WEP?

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. Currently, I am unaware of any issues with OS X 10.8.x and the earlier 802.11b/g AirPorts or with them conflicting with earlier OS X Macs.
If you temporarily power-off the iMac can the MacBook connect now? If so, try setting the Radio Mode on the Express to: "802.11g only." By default, it is set at: "802.11b/g compatible." Verify that the MacBook can still connect. Once verified, power-down the MacBook. Now power-up the iMac. Verify that it can connect. Leave it powered on. Finally power-up the MacBook. Can it connect now?

  • WDS with WEP

Is is possible to use WDS (one of six AP1230s as the primary WDS) when WEP is configured?

    Hi,
    I said :
Wireless Domain Services (WDS). An access point providing WDS on your wireless LAN maintains a cache of credentials for CCKM-capable client devices on your wireless LAN. When a CCKM-capable client roams from one access point to another, the WDS access point forwards the client's credentials to the new access point with the multicast key. Only two packets pass between the client and the new access point, greatly shortening the reassociation time.
I read this from cisco website only , you can check it ,
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a0080341e2b.html
or you can see in this document..
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00804ef3e3.html
And for WPA i only know that ,encryption can be used with 802.11 Wireless Distribution System (WDS) links between bridges or repeaters, but only with static keys configured into the APs at both ends of the WDS link. In practical terms, this means that WDS can only be used with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), because WEP allows direct configuration of static keys. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) did away with static encryption keys, using a 4-way key handshake to derive dynamic encryption keys based either on a Preshared Secret Key (WPA-PSK) or a master key delivered via 802.1X.
But i suppose that is old concept now, with 802.11i draft WPA is supported by WDS in both infrastructure and ad-hoc modes ....
    Thanks for gr8 concept sharing

  • Since 2.2.1, Active Sync show "can't connect" errors fairly often...

The only thing I've seen thus far on the negative side is the recurring "can't connect to server" errors.
A reset seems to help, but I didn't have this with previous versions.
    Anyone else seeing this?
    Scott

I'm having the same issue. It only seems to happen with 3g, no issues with wifi. Resetting the iphone helps for a few minutes then the error returns. Was having the issue until today (Feb 1, 2009). Now seems to be working normally. Hope Apple/at&t have figured this out and it won't come back.

  • Can I set up a WDS network with two main base stations?

I have an AEBS in the main part of the house and a time capsule in the office in the back of the house, currently with one internet connection (it's cable modem) into to the AEBS. I have tried to use relays (two airport expresses) in a WDS to have the internet connection reach the time capsule, but unfortunately the distance is too great and it won't make it.
I can move the internet connection and AEBS into the middle of the house and everything would be fine (one internet connection into the house, no need for relays to reach the time capsule), but this requires rewiring the cable connection and adding a power outlet, which seems like a lot of work.
My other option is to simply have another internet connection hardwired into the office. This would be using the same cable that comes into the house and is split outside. If I go this route--my question is--can I get the time capsule and the AEBS be on the same WDS network (same name, same passwords?), or will I have two separate networks in the house? If it is the former--how do I set it up? Can I have a WDS with two main base stations? Or is there an easier route?
    Thanks the help and advice...

Just run the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on the AEBS to the WAN port on the Time Capsule. Configure the Time Capsule to operate as a bridge.
You do not use WDS when they are wired together.
Then configure the AEBS and Time Capsule to use the same SSID, wireless encryption type/level/password. Have them operate on different channels as far apart as possible.

  • Satellite M70-WiFi connection just with WEP or WPA

    Hi,
I have the Satellite M70-164 with an Intel PRO set wifi adapter 2200BG with the latest driver.
My problem is that I can only connect to networks with security (with WEP or WPA), when I try to connect to "open" wifi networks the computer never establishes the conection, it says is "waiting for the network".
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Pedro

    Hello Pedro
Try to use Restore Factory Default on your router settings and try again. I use WLAN for a long time and I have never heard about something similar but with Intel 2200 BG wireless card everything is possible. I have read many different topics about different issues with this card.
    Bye

  • Iphone4 wifi shows, refuses to connect?

Just got my phone and just got it activated- connected to my work wifi, and the phone shows the signal as full tilt, but- when I open safari it switches to 3g.
Turning off 3g forces it to edge, turning off edge/cellular data (with wifi shown full strength) gives the "not connected" error.
Have reset/rebooted/etc phone- cannot do so to internet, but have confirmed it working fine.
    Thoughts?
Summary: Wifi icon signal shown, unable to use.

I've pressed every reset option available and tried all the usual things I can think of (Restarting iPhone, Restarting router etc etc)
My 3G works fine on the network, I've never had issues with that.
Only the iPhone 4 is having issues.
    EDIT:
iPhone shows that its connected to the WiFi in the WiFi Networks screen, however it shows its connected to 3G on the top bar.
    EDIT 2:
Attempting to connect to the web after turning off 3G and Cellular Data forces it to show a WiFi icon on the top bar, however, connections do not work.

  • Please help me set up a WDS with relay

I am attempting to create a WDS with 5 Airport Express units with the main station being connected to a wired router (will this slow things down?) I used the Airport Utility to designate the main station in WDS and then scanned for another station that I set up as remote. Everything works fines at this point.
Next I selected another station as a relay and then selected the main station and the other ones which I want to act as remotes from the relay (not sure if I should include the remote that I already have set up off the main station as also a remote to the relay) But regardless this is when I get the message that I should not have DHCP and NAT enabled and that I should deselect the "Distribute IP Addresses" option which didn't come up when I set up the first remote from the main. I tried leaving these options both on or off but either way the relay didn't connect to the main however the remotes connected the the relay. (I have double checked that I have the main station for the relay selected properly.
I was confused that you are to enter a network name and password for the relay because I thought it would it would automatically be changed to the main networks names and password. (Maybe it would have if I had it working right) Since it didn't I attempted entering in the main network name and password but it didn't help. A relay in WDS doesn't create another network name correct? Computers can also connect to a relay? I also thought it was strange that when I was scanning for the stations that the MAC address would come up but the name would be listed as "unknown" but am not sure if that is a big deal. One other issue I was experiencing was that my PMG5 couldn't connect to another station after already being connected to one for some unkown reason but luckily I have a PB to work with that had no trouble accessing the different stations to then attempt to configure as I have described. I also wonder if it woud be better to kepp the PMG5 wired from the wired router and then also connect the Main Airport Express to it. If anyone can provide any advice it will be greatly appreciated! Thanks a million!

Sorry, would love to go into fine detail about this but I'm a little tired and frustrated at this point.
I'm basically having the same problem as robosapien. I just want to create this simple configuration :-
AirPort Extreme Base Station (main) <--> AirPort Express (relay) <--> Airport Express (remote)
In following various instruction manuals, common sense and logical experimentation I'm simply failing to get it to work. I've assigned MAC addresses, configured manually and with the set-up assistants but I'm begining to feel that the "multiple" configuration adjustments that happen when setting up a WDS network are somehow cancelling things out.
Here are a few things that are confusing me.
    1) It appears I have set things up correctly in a single room environment with MAC addresses in the "right" boxes, main/relay/remote WDS settings assigned correctly and green lights on the 2 Express units. I then move Express 1 (relay) to another room and retain green light status. I then move Express 2 (remote) to it's intended location - another building, but with only 2 walls and 25ft between Express's - but I only get the flashing orange LED. I return to Express 1 and that too is flashing orange, as if Express 2 has messed up it's function when it was powered up. The network has fallen down.
    2) When experimenting with configuring each station I don't understand why a single remote base station is in a mode classed as "Create a Wireless Network" as opposed to "Join an existing Wireless Network", but that second option disables access to WDS settings, so I'll hazard a guess that is used for bridging.
I'm sure it's probably all about the order in which you set up the base stations
and which base station holds which MAC addresses, but I've exhausted the logical combinations.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Apple TV as WDS relay station?

We have a mixed Airport Extreme 802.11g/gigabit Ethernet LAN at our house. Because our widescreen TV is at the other end of the house, well out of the effective range of the Airport LAN, and our main iTunes "server" Mac is connected by gigE, I connected the Apple TV by wire as well. All that introduction is for what I want to do: Since the Apple TV's Airport interface is not being used, why can't I make it a WDS relay station for the Airport network? That would really extend our wireless LAN. I know you can do this with an Airport-equipped Mac that's connected by Ethernet...

Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums.
I'm afraid the tv can't be used in that capacity.

  • Airport Express systems with two relay stations

I need to use four Airport Expresses to cover my house from bottom to top. The system design is such that the main base station connected to the broadband router is in the basement, then there are two relay stations to connect to the final remote base station located at the top floor.
The Apple manual describe the use of one one relay station between the main base station and a remote base station, the case of two relay stations is not covered. The question therefore is what settings the relay stations should have in such a configuration.

    Welcome to the discussions.
    Here is what Apple says.
The base station that connects to your Internet service provider is the main base station. A remote base station connects wirelessly to the main station and extends (or "rebroadcasts") the wireless network to clients that are not in range of the main. A relay base station is like a remote, but it has the additional function of extending the wireless network to a remote which isn't within range of the main. There can be only one relay between a remote and a main.

  • No base stations showing up in Select Base Station window

    Stats:
Dual G5 PPC, Airport Extreme card, firmware v.404.2, OS X 10.4.6
White Airport Extreme Base Station, firmware v.6.3 using 128 bit WEP
    2 Airport Express base stations
I have an oddball thing going on with my AirPort Extreme Base Station. I have it hardwired via Ethernet to my Dual G5 PPC, but it doesn't show up in my Select Base Station window, nor do my other Airport Express base stations. On my satellite Macs, Airport Admin Utility shows all of the base stations. I can connect to any of these base stations from the G5 by manually entering their IP addresses, but this shouldn't be necessary. Also, when I do pull up the configuration window for the Extreme base station, there is no music option.
What's odd is that I have Internet and networking available on all my machines, so the Extreme is obviously talking to everything, but my G5 seems blind to it.
Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Can it be fixed?

Turns out a reboot fixed the problem. Never occurred to me because I've almost never rebooted this machine.

  • AirPort Express in client mode with WEP

I just bought an AirPort Express that I'd like to use in client mode so I can stream music from my laptop to my stereo. I have an existing wireless G network supported by a Netgear WGR614v4 router, using 64-bit WEP encryption. My laptop is a Dell Studio 15 running Vista Home Premium, and it has a Dell Wireless 1387 card.
I know there are some reported issues with AE and WEP encryption, but for whatever reason my laptop doesn't connect to WPA networks, so I'm stuck on WEP. I've been using WEP 64-bit, so I attempted to setup the AE to work with that. The AE was connected directly to my Netgear router, and I installed the AirPort Utility software on my Dell laptop. Went through the setup, entered my WEP passkey, and then got to a screen where I clicked "update AE" or something of that sort. It then showed a windows with some upload bars on it that made it look like it was doing something, but it finally resulted in an error message saying the AE could not be found following the update. After looking for help, I stumbled across the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1765010&tstart=0
which in Step 6 he mentions this "error" is normal. That gave me hope, so I disconnected the AE from the router and moved it to the other room where my stereo is. Plugged in the mini cable, then plugged the AE into the wall and allowed it to run its setup sequence. Eventually I had a solid green light, so I figured I was in good shape.
Problem is that I then opened the AirPort Utility software on the Dell laptop to complete the setup and activate AirTunes, but the AirPort Utility doesn't show the AE connected. If I log into my router utility though, it does show the AE as one of the devices on my network, so somewhere there is a disconnect. After reading some more, I realized I could manually connect via AirPort Utility by entering the AE IP address and password. Tried this and it seemed to work because it showed the info for my AE, but when I closed that window it was gone. I figured maybe that's just a bug with AirPort Utility, so I closed it out and went to iTunes, hoping to see the option for selecting AE as the audio output, but it's not there.
I've tried almost everything I can think of, but I'm having no luck. At times I feel like I'm even making negative progress because I'll start everything from scratch and it will get hung up at a step earlier in the process. For instance, right now I've just restarted from scratch and the AirPort Utility can't even connect to the AE to do the initial setup. For some reason, following a Factory Default Reset, and with the AE connected directly to the router, it now boots up to a solid green light, shows up in AirPort Utility under a default base station name, yet the AirPort Utility can't connect to modify my wireless settings.
    Does anyone have any advice?

    1) are both the LAN and WAN ethernet ports available or only one of them, the LAN port presumeably?
Both ports operate as LAN ports in this type of setup, since the Express will be configured in Bridge Mode automatically.
    2) If you unplug the ethernet cable momentarily to connect a different device, does the AX drop the wireless connection or is it maintained?
Wireless will be maintained, but you may need to power off and restart the Express.
Better practice would be to power off the Express before you disconnect the cable(s), connect the cable(s) again, then power up the AirPort Express.

  • ARP over Computer-to-Computer Network with WEP?

    Howdy All,
I have two Macs running OSX 10.4.8. I want to connect them with a Computer-to-Computer Airport network (not an Airport Base Station) with static IP routing between them, but NOT using Internet Sharing.
If I setup the Computer-to-Computer networking using WEP then ARP packets don't seem to get through (across the wireless). If I recreate the Computer-to-Computer networking without the WEP then the connection works fine.
When I setup a Computer-to-Computer networking in Airport does it filter ARP packets for some reason (or perhaps it doesn't need them with Internet Sharing)? Can I create a computer to computer network some other way?
I don't want to use Internet Sharing because of the NAT it creates.
Thanks in advance for any advice / suggestions.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

    Hi BDAqua,
Thanks for your post. Unfortunately, I don't believe I explained things clearly. I am trying to do IP routing from one machine to the other without using the NAT that Internet Sharing would give me.
I can get it to work fine when I have a computer-to-computer network without WEP security, e.g. I can ping each machine from the other. However, if I recreate the c-to-c wireless network with WEP it doesn't work.
A tcpdump suggests that the ARP packets aren't getting through the computer-to-computer network when WEP is on. Here is a portion of the output from tcpdump:
    18:46:43.826657 arp who-has 192.168.49.7 tell 192.168.49.4
    18:46:44.949274 arp who-has 192.168.49.7 tell 192.168.49.4
    18:46:45.950094 arp who-has 192.168.49.7 tell 192.168.49.4
    18:46:47.074291 arp who-has 192.168.49.7 tell 192.168.49.4
    18:46:48.075014 arp who-has 192.168.49.7 tell 192.168.49.4
    18:46:57.361050 IP 192.168.49.4.ipp > 192.168.49.255.ipp: UDP, length: 113
    18:46:59.448638 IP 192.168.49.4.ipp > 192.168.49.255.ipp: UDP, length: 129
    18:47:02.463678 IP 192.168.49.4.ipp > 192.168.49.255.ipp: UDP, length: 94
    18:47:03.528851 IP 192.168.49.4.ipp > 192.168.49.255.ipp: UDP, length: 146
Of course, both machines have the same WEP password etc. It may be something to do with how Apple creates the c-to-c wireless network when WEP is used, I don't know.
Hopefully that makes it clearer. BTW, Personal Filesharing was on and the Firewall was off in both cases.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.
Here are more details if it will help:
    I have two Macs A & B.

    A has IP forwarding on
A also has a wired network connection elsewhere ...

B has connected to the wireless network called W (using the Airport menu extra).
B has IP address 192.168.49.7 with router 192.168.49.4
    B has a static route 192.168.49 -interface en1
    B has IP forwarding on
B has a wired network connection to a printer ...
netstat -nr shows similar (but reversed, i.e. 4 and 7) for en1.
This is NOT using "Internet Sharing" (i.e. it is off). I don't want the NAT that comes with that!
System preferences shows both machines are connected to the "Computer-to-Computer" network W.
Pinging the other machine from either side I get:
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: No route to host
Again, if I create the network without WEP security with the same configuration, the pings work fine.

  • Can Not Access Airport Utility or USB Disk Over Wireless with WEP Enabled

I have an AirPort Extreme base station, with several Windows XP (SP2) machines connected to it. I am able to access the base station through the AirPort Utility (v5.1) using the machines that are connected to the base station via ethernet cables. However, when I attempt to configure the base station using a wireless connection on my Win XP laptop, it says that no base stations can be found. It will also not connect to the USB hard drive (no hards drives appear in the AirPort Disk Utility.) I AM able to browse the web via the wireless connection however. When I turn off WEP, the laptop is able to see the base station through the AirPort Utility, so I know it has something to do with the security, but I have not been able to narrow the problem down beyond that.
    Any suggestions?
      Windows XP

    Hi,
I'm having a similar problem. I am using the airport extreme with a MacBook and a PC running windows XP, The MacBook is the computer that I used to configure the settings in the airport utility for the base station. I set it up this way with the assistance of an Apple representative. When I view the disk tab in the airport utility, I can see the USB drive connected to the base station. I can also see the USB drive on the desktop of the Mac. On the PC however, I can't seem to locate the USB drive anywhere. I can't see it anywhere in explorer and the drive doesn't show up when I use an application and attempt to open a file. Does this sound similar to your experience and were you able to resolve the problem?

  • Airport Extreme with Two Airport Express Stations

Alright... It's been a while since I turned to the community for help, but here I go.
I've got an Airport Extreme Base Station (Dual Band) purchased a little over 1 year ago. I also have two Airport Express Base Stations (Let's call them AX 1 and AX 2 for short) purchased in the last 6 months. I am trying to configure everything as follows. Wireless signal originates from AEBS in one corner of the house, gets picked up by AX 1 downstairs, and then broadcast to AX 2 upstairs which in turn broadcasts the network to our computers upstairs. Instead what is happening is that it goes AEBS > AX 1 and then AX 2 acts as a client only to AX 1 and will not extend the signal any further. I've been trying to use the default "Extend a network" option, avoiding the WDS setup because i've read that WDS will drop everything to 802.11g instead of 802.11n. Is this true?
Signal in the house is fairly poor and I can't move the AEBS from where it is due to wiring constraints with the cable modem.
Any help would be appreaciated! I'm just trying to get decent 802.11n coverage throughout all the house :/

I believe that "extending" a network can only use one "hop", so that you can't have AX 2 extend the network from AX 1. WDS would allow you to have one AX as a "relay" and the other as a "remote", but as you mention, there's a performance penalty for that.

That may actually be your best option. Consider using PowerLine devices to "extend" the Ethernet connection between your broadband modem and your AEBS:
    http://computer.howstuffworks.com/power-network.htm
Then put the AEBS near the center of your house and if needed, configure each AX to extend the network from the AEBS.
