My whole library of music is re-arranged, rearranged....

so i install the newest version of itunes, and it goes ahead and puts all my music in folders per artists name, i had them arranged the way i wanted them, ie 1 hit wonders, live from the radio, etc, and now i cant find songs without some major headache....is there a way to fix this??
thanks---Brian

Updated iTunes should have used same settings you had before. What you are describing is due to the default settings for iTunes. There is a checkbox in preferences, checked by default, that says something like let iTunes manage library. The setting causes iTunes to order files by artist>album>track inside iTunes music folder. There will also be folders for podcasts, tv shows, movies.
There is nothing built in to iTunes to reverse this. You have to manually rearrange your files. If you have iTunes set to manage library then if you do move the files iTunes will not be able to find them and will place ! before track names.

  • I upgraded to version 10.5.3 and lost all whole library of music!

I upgraded to the latest itunes and lost my whole libary! I also had a message stating this laptop wasn't authorised, however when I try to authorise, I recieve a another message saying it already is!
    What's happening?
Any advise would be grateful PLEASE?

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • HT1386 how can i get all of my music transferred to my iphone? only itunes purchased songs will transfer, not my whole library.

How can i transfer my itunes music library to my iphone? currently it will only transfer itunes purchased songs and not my whole library.

For non-purchased music like CD rip music, or website downloaded songs, you need some third party software to copy the music from iPod to mac. If you need details, here is a guide about how to get music from iPod to macbook. Hope it helps.

  • HT1351 Only want to see sync songs/artists/albums on iPod touch (not the whole library in iTunes). How to do it?

I only want to see on iPod touch songs/artists/albums manually selected for sync (not the whole library in iTunes). How to do it? Not sync titles appear in grey colour...

So if I understand you correctly, you want to be able to sync only certain songs, artists, and albums correct? If so you can configure this set up from under the iPod's Music configuration tab in iTunes as described in the Syncing Automatically section in the Apple support document you linked in at the top of the page.  Note that you cannot select only certain songs, but you can set it up to sync selected Artists, Genres, and Albums.
If the tab and its configurations are grayed out, it is likely because your iPod is set up for manual management, meaning the manually manage music and videos option is enabled from under the iPod's Summary tab.

  • Old computer died, need to import whole library/playlists to new

My old computer died without warning last week, and thankfully I was able to recover all my music and such from my hard drive and put it on my new computer. How do I import my whole library with playlists and everything into my new iTunes? I spent tons of time putting different playlists together and don't want to have to start from scratch. Is there a way to pull them off my iPod??
    Any help is appreciated!

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

  • Why can i not just add songs to my iphone instead of syncing the whole library?, why can i not just add songs to my iphone instead of syncing the whole library?

Previously I had a blackberry, if I wanted to add a song, all i had to to was drop and drag it to the device.  Is there a way to just ADD a song and not have to sync the whole library?  My daughter and husband and I all share music, but I don't want ALL his music on my phone, just some of the songs, and my daughter likes some of mine and some of his... you get the idea.... how do I just ADD songs without syncing the whole catealoge of music?

Create a playlist of just the music you want, then follow the directions here http://discussions.apple.com/message/16929103#16929103

  • My iTunes says there are 17 songs it cannot locate. How do I locate which songs these are without clicking on each song in my whole library?

My iTunes says there are 17 songs it cannot locate. How do I locate which songs these are without clicking on each song in my whole library?

To locate all of the broken links in your library try:
    Lost & Found Playlists
Create a regular playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist (it may take some time to count the tracks that are to be dropped). Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. They can be deleted with Ctrl+A to select them and then Shift+Delete to discard them.
The exercise can be repeated with different media sources if needed.
Or try iTunes Folder Watch with its option to check for dead tracks on startup.

  • Why do I have to redownload my whole library from the cloud?

I just logged into itunes for the first time in a little while, and I couldn't see my library because it was no longer downloaded to my computer. I understand that the cloud is omnipresent, even if you decide you don't want to use it, but I'm confused.
I automatically hide cloud purchases (it never mattered because I never purposely put things on the cloud), and so I now have to manually re-download my whole library from the cloud.
Does anyone know why this happened? Was it an update? This seems really silly-- I understand automatically keeping things on the cloud, but why would anyone think I don't also want my music on my computer?
And are there any quick fixes, or am I really going to have to sit here downloading for the forseeable future?

I just want to make sure this doesn't happen again.
Make sure you back up your computer before installing any updates.
Installing an update should not delete files but from reports here it happens occasionally.  We don't know why and given that probably only a very few people lose their libraries through updating versus millions of updates it is something you simply have to prepare against.  I am not even sure what happened in your case because thgis presence of some files doesn't match anything I can think would happen.

  • Whole library gone, again and again

    Hi everybody,
I've a problem with my itunes since a few days ago. When I start itunes, my whole library is gone. I can't find my old library in the itunes-file or music-file. The first time I just went adding all my songs back. My ipod had to 'start over' as well.
But when I shut down my computer and start the next day, the library is gone again! It's really frustrating me.. and haven't found an answer on the internet yet.
Has anyone an idea what the problem is and how it can be solved?
It's really unexpected, because I have not installed new programmes/updates on my computer or something.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to AD!
Vaio users worldwide have been seeing this problem. Some Sony software causes a conflict with iTunes. You need to set the Sony Content Folder Watcher to leave the iTunes folder alone.
Looks like Sony may have put out an update for that in Asia:
    http://www.sony-asia.com/support/faq/300917/productcategory/itpersonalcomputer
Contact Sony to see if they have an update for your model, or configure its software to leave itunes alone.
There is a way to configure the sony software - I don't have a Vaio, but this older topic has directions

  • How can i convert my whole library to flac or apple lossless

how do i convert my whole library to flac or apple lossless?!!?!!?!?!?!

First, FLAC is not supported by iTunes and the same probably applies to the iPod.
Second, are all your files currently in AIFF or WAV format, or on CDs?  If you have mp3 files or AAC files the only thing that will happen by you converting them to lossless is you will use up more space for the music with no gain in quality.  Quality is lost when you convert to mp3 or AAC and converting it to lossless won't get it back.
It looks like current ipods support Apple Lossless.  Still, the whole idea behind ipods is to use compressed format so you can fit on the most music.  Read http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=85227
If after doing all that you still want Apple Lossless, you need to set the preferences to ALAC in your iTunes preferences, then convert with the Advanced menu command.  Mind you, I use an older iTunes so you may have to explore a bit to find where they have those features now.  This conversion will place a copy of the file in iTunes in the new format but also leave the old one there, so you'll need to delete the old ones if you don't want them.

  • Is their a way of transfering certain songs, not the whole library?

i've created a new playlist on my itunes comp because other people in the house already have their own playlists for their own ipods. how do i tranfer just the songs i want and not the whole library? cheers

At the very bottom of the link posted above, there is a short sentence that indicates you can transfer 'Selected Playlists'.
With the iPod attached and seen within iTunes, go to Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab and select the updating method to be playlists.
This will allow you to choose which playlist(s) you want to auto-sync with your iPod.
This is one of the easiest ways to have two or more iPods syncing with iTunes and containing different music.

  • Auto-syncing ipod with itunes: how not to have it synced with whole library

I remember a year ago when I had itunes automatically sync with my ipod, it created a playlist, something along the name of "NAME's iPOD SONGS" or something like that. And then every time i connected my ipod, it would only look into that playlist to see what's been added or removed, and so it would sync only with that folder.
But now, it wants to sync with my whole library, which doesn't fit on my ipod. How do I make it sync with only a playlist instead?
    Thanks

    Connect your iPod to iTunes
When it appears click on the iPod icon in the left hand pane
    Select the Music tab
Near the top of the tab select *Sync Music* & *Selected playlists:*
Check the playlists you want to include, uncheck those you don't
    Click Apply

  • Itunes deleted my library from my ipod. now i only have new purchases. how can I get my whole library back onto my ipod?

I just transferred itunes to a new computer. When I plugged in my ipod, I was asked if I wanted to erase my old library and put the new on on. I said yes because my whole library is on this computer. Now that it's done with the sync, I only have the three albums that I just purchased and all of the rest is gone. How can I sync my whole music library back onto this device?

If the lost music and photos are no longer accessible by or on your iPod, on your PC, or in another backup somewhere, you are out of luck.  You can download most iTunes purchases again at no cost via iCloud.  See this article for more information and assistance.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
For non-iTunes purchased content, you'll need to redownload or rerip them from their original source.
For the future, you may want to consider backing up your iTunes library and/or PC.
