My window manager only starts 50% of the time.

Hello all, I installed arch about a week ago and it has run perfectly.
Unfortunately about 2 days ago I have a strange issue that I can't seem to diagnose.
When I boot my arch install, (dual boot win8 with seperate hard drive), and login using slim, around 50% of the time everything will load up and my panel will show etc.
The other 50% of the time the desktop brings up just my mouse, I'm using a tiling manager and the hotkeys dont work either which makes me think that .xinit isn't being executed, yet other things in there work fine.
bspwm is my window manager, slim is my login manager, I looked in xorg.0.log a few times and couldn't find anything.  Any help would be appreciated!
(Sorry if this is in the wrong place, also ask for any files you need)

Chazza, using exec is common, but not at all necessary.  Without the exec, the parent shell process just hangs around - this is unneeded, but it does no harm.  One can even put many WMs one after the other with no exec command to run one right after the other.  Or put a few (or just one) WM in a loop with no 'exec' in order to restart the WM without restarting X (this can be seen in the dwm wiki for one example).
Toqoz, please post (or link to) 2 xorg logs: 1 for a successful run, and one for the failed attempt.
Heres my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file for a successful boot, couldn't find the xorg folder in ~/.local/share/xorg.

Most YouTube content requires the Flash plugin. Sometimes it's necessary to uninstall then reinstall that plugin.
Uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Very important to uninstall the currently installed plugin first.
Now launch Safari and try a video.
If you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.
You may also need to delete the cache associated with Safari .
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy/paste:   ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Click Go the move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari. Try a video.

  • Only one user at the time can execute VE01 (due to blockage of VEIAV)

    Hi,
As I understand it only one user at the time can execute VE01 (or MEIS for arrivals). If someone is already executing the VE01 transaction the error-message "Table VEIAV is blocked by user XX" appears. It does not matter if one tries to execute it for different legal entities - no parallel processing seems to be possible.
This is a huge limitation for a global concern with many entities operating in the same SAP instance. Does anyone recognize this problem and are there any ways to get around it? It does not make sense that dispatches (VE01) and arrivals (MEIS) cannot be executed for several organizational units at the same time in parallel?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mats Hansson

    yes I know this problem.
One should not maintain much thru this transaction.
for me it is not more than an emergency transaction, as it is not really more than table maintenance thru SM30
You should investigate what entries/changes the users have to make.
Limit these manual entries by having better data in the system, so that SAP can itself create the entries for this table.
Organize more, less users , maybe just one per company who shall maintain VEFU manually.
Train them to prepare their entries before they start using VEFU.
Explain that they should leave VEFU as soon as possible as the block other users.
assign maintenance windows to the users.

  • Why does my Safari Auto-Fill only work part of the time?

First of all, why isn't there a link on the Apple website to provide Feedback?  Secondly, I'd love to know why my Safari Auto-Fill only works some of the time, like when entering Sweepstakes information.  I realize some websites don't allow Auto-Fill, but on the ones that do, I can't get the second window to open up when I click "Auto-Fill".

Safari 6.1.1 and yes all web forms are checked under Preferences Auto-Fill.  I am daily entering sweepstakes for the HGTV dream home, and even though the initial bubble shows up "Auto-Fill your contact information" shows up, when I click on it, the second bubble that lets you confirm the info doesn't always open.  I tried it just now in a separate tab, and it opened; then I came back here to write some of the message.  Then I went back to try again and it won't open.  It drives me crazy.  I keep trying with each new data field and sometimes the second bubble will open further down the page.

Right, like I'm trying to say, THERE IS NO SAFARI MENU bar. Example: I have multiple applications open, I click on a Photoshop window, the correct menu or title bar or whatever changes. Every other application window I click on brings up the correct "whatever" bar. If I click on the desktop, the "Finder Bar" shows up.
Everythiing else, BUT SAFARI, works the same way since OS X came out.  This is ridiculous.
I'm getting the vibe that Apple is trying to get rid of the finder.... this is the way wrong direction.

  • Session Manager only reloading 1 of the 13 windows shown as backed-up

Since applying latest update to Firefox (including a suggested upgrade to Adobe Flashplayer) Firefox Session Manager only opens the first window and its Tabs of a saved session, even though it shows that that session contains 13 Windows with a total of 53 tabs.
If I then close that Window and try to re-open it Firefox fails to open any Window.

    Thanks fr revert !

  • How to avoid, when Windows is natively started, to see the Mac Hc as resour

    Hi there!
I have just bought a brand new iMac 21.5''
Unfortunately, I need a Windows partition for some programs.
I just installed Windows XP via Boot Camp and thing seemed to go good.
But there's still a big problem: when I start Windows at the very start, in my resources I can see Mac's hard disk, and it is fully explorable (in read only mode, but it's still a problem), without entering any password.
In my Mac hard disk all Users accesse are protected by password, but passwords entering can be easily avoided by accessing with the Windows partition.
    The point is :
how to make Mac partition unexplorable from Windows OS?
    Thank you very much guys

    This one?
    <quote>
    I just found this:
    <---------------This is for bootcamp 3.0 users------------------------>
By doing the following you will disable HFS mount / read mode on windows XP, Vista, 7.
Navigate to c:/windows/systems32/drivers/AppleMNT.sys, rename the AppleMNT.sys file to something like AppleMNT_keep.sys or something of your likings.
Reboot your machine and notice that your Mac volume is no longer mounted.
    </quote>
Tonight I will try this patch and will post its functionality. It's still a very bad turnaround in my opinion, but if it's work it's good enough
    Thank you very much
Please Apple provide an option inside BootCamp to allow / disallow this feature!

  • Window manager crashes when I run the program I'm making.

Hello, I'm making a program which uses OpenGL, Python and Cocoa with PyObjC. I've made an additional part to my program which uses the same graphical code as everything else. When using it, the window manager crashes. It happens at two places. At one place, the fps drops rapidly before the crash happens. The other place has no fps drop noticeable; it simply crashes.
I have no idea how to debug this because all I have is an error report.
Can anyone make sense of the error report? (Same on each occasion)
    Thank you.

    Reboot your computer.
When it's back up again run the installer with administrator permissions.

Thank you christ1. That worked. I did try running it with administrator, but I hadn't rebooted and it didn't work. It did work after I rebooted. I don't know why that should have mattered, but there you go. Thank you again.

  • Macbook Pro won't start most of the time; freezes constantly.

I always come to these forums for answers and I've always found them, so I thank you in advance for everything you do. Unfortunately, I can't find an answer for this one...
My Macbook Pro 13" (early 2008?, maybe mid-2008?) had a weird thing happen this morning where a whole bunch of applications froze up. I could still move the mouse, though. It got so bad that I just shut my computer down by holding the power button. When I tried to restart, it came up with a gray screen and nothing happened. Then I tried it again, and it couldn't find the startup directory (folder with question mark). I then restarted the computer and held down option, specifying the start-up directory as the hard drive. It accepted the command, but didn't start up, so I was forced to power it down again. I then tried to repeat this, but when I pressed the option key just after start-up, it just shut down immediately. This happened several times.
Some hours later I got the computer to start up again after using the restore disk (option, then select), and reinstalling Mavericks. I was able to run disk utility, which showed no problems with the hard drive. I looked at console and I'm getting constant error messages for a variety of reasons:

And that one happened on startup.
I'm running the computer right now, and nothing has gone wrong, yet. Of course, the error messages are still there, so I don't think anything has changed, I'm just trying to run as few applications as possible and I'm only on this website.
    I ran EtreCheck also:

I get the sense that there's a lot of crap on this computer that I ought to get rid of, but I'm not sure if this is causing the problem.
Also, I just installed 10.9.3 yesterday.
Thanks again for any help you can provide!

Well, the computer stopped starting up at all. It could never find the operating system. I tried safe mode and virtually every other non-standard start-up option. I then did target disk mode with another MBP and got the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I then tried using disk utility and it couldn't retrieve retrieve the data using restore (writing to an external drive). I suspect that this means the hard drive would need to be replaced. In your expert opinions, is this necessarily true? Could this still be just a software problem, or perhaps some other piece of hardware?
Part of the reason I ask is that this laptop is now nearly five years old. It's needed a new battery for two years. If it's a virtual certainty that the hard drive is toast, I don't want to pay $150 for someone to take it out and try to recover any remaining data from it, only to reveal that the data is indeed irretrievable (since the computer itself is probably only worth $300-400 at this point). The nearest Genius Bar is also more than 2 hours away. Am I going about this the right way by using disk utility, given that the hard drive won't mount to the desktop of the other computer? If the hard drive can't be reat in target disk mode, does that confirm that it is the hard drive?
    Thanks
Oh also, it does still make the startup noise, even though I can't run the AHT since I can't get it to start up in safemode. I thought this mean that it passing various hardware tests. Does this not apply to the hard drive?

  • My Display Only Works Part of the Time and Apple Care Won't Help Me (Long)

I bought my computer at a discounted price because it was a restocked item, but was it really worth it? I'm beginning to think not. I saw that it had one stuck pixel, but saving that much money on such an expensive computer, the pixel hardly seemed like a travesty. However, I think I've discovered the real reason why the last owner gave up such a seemingly exceptional piece of hardware...
After about a month of flawless operation my "new" computer started to act a little strangely. It wouldn't always go to sleep when it was scheduled, the screen saver wouldn't always come on by itself...things that I though a simple PRAM reset, SMC reset, or disk permission repair would fix. After countless attempts at all three "fixes" I was still having problems...a few days after these problems started occuring something even more drastic happened: My computer would turn on (the little light would come on, I'd hear the fans start running and the start up tone) but the screen would remain black. I tried several PRAM and SMC resets as suggested on this forum, but the screen continued to come up black for about an hour. That's when I called Apple.
The Apple Care specialist on the phone asked me for the serial in which I had to lift the computer up to get (since I obviously couldn't read it off the screen). She suggested an SMC reset which, I explained to her, I had tried already but it hadn't worked, however, I was willing to give it another shot. Oddly (and rather annoyingly) enough it worked, and for a short amount of time I was happy...until it happened again...another call to Apple...and again...and about 3 or 4 calls to Apple Care later, they suggested that I go in to an Apple Store to have it looked at.
The Apple Specialist made an appointment with me to meet with an Apple Genius the next day at 4:30PM at a store about a mile away from my house. The next day I lugged my 24" iMac through the local mall (I'm female, 5'2", and I weigh about 108 so it wasn't too easy of a feat) to discover the apple store was CLOSED for the next few days so that they could "make the store better." I called Apple Care on my cell phone right there in the mall and asked them what was going on. Didn't they know that this Apple Store was closed? The man I was talking to said that they knew and he wasn't sure how the person I had talked to just the day before had signed me up for an appointment when he hadn't even asked for my e-mail address. It was most bizarre. This man made an appointment with me for later that same day at an Apple Store about 45 minutes away from where I live. I didn't want to go, but I'm a college student and I was a desperate for my computer to work again.
Shaking around in that box must have brought it out of it's strange seized-up state because as I brought it out for the Mac Genius to look at it turned on for him no problem. Quite a frustrating problem because it's so spontainious that it keeps making me look like either a liar or a fool. He said he'd run an 8-hour diagnostic check on it and I could pick it up the next day. So the next day I waited for their call but I got none. I called them and they said that they were still running tests and it'd be ready the next day. The day after, about an hour and a half before I had to go to work, they called me and told me my computer was ready. They said they had ran a 24-hour diagnostic and everything was working fine but they said they'd run more tests if I wanted them to. I'm a full-time college student and I need my computer for just about all of my classes, so I declined more tests and told them I'd pick it up right away. I dashed over there to pick it up and dashed back as fast as I could (and I even made it to work on time...but just barely). Later that night I found that they had accidentally left their diagnostics CD in my computer (I called them about it and they said that would like it if I would bring it back...I still haven't mailed it).
All was fine and good (well, just okay...it still had problems with its sleeping and screen-savering) with my computer until yesterday. I got that black screen again upon start up....but this time my "fixes" worked after a few tries. There were no more problems for the rest of yesterday.
However, today I came home from school and go to start up my computer and the screen turned on and I saw the little mac symbol and that little circle of bars...but then it froze. I held in the little button to force a shutdown and when I started it back up again I was greeted by my good old friend, Mr. Black Screen. Just wonderful. I tried my "fixes" but today I didn't get lucky. So while I was holding in the button to start up my computer (again) and give it another go, I held it longer than I was supposed to and the little on light began flickering. Then I heard this unpleasant tone that lasted a few seconds before stopping and treating me to the startup sound. This time the screen turned on. Yay! I go to call Apple to find out what I had just done, and I find out that my 90 days are up and unless I wanted to pay $50 for them to be puzzled by my issue once more or give them $300 for not quite 3 more years of service, I'd have to lug my computer to an Apple Store or post here to get help. Thanks a lot Apple Care.
My "new" computer cost me almost $3,000. It should work the way it's supposed to. I need it to last me no less than 6 more years, but with the problems I've had with it in the first 3 months (which seem only to be getting worse and more frequent), I don't know if I'm expecting WAY too much out of it. I've been a loyal Apple user for 13 years and out of the 5 computers I've had in that time I've never had so many problems (actually I've never had any problems, at least nothing really serious; I'd never even called Apple Care before this). I'm a fairly experienced user (I'm not a Mac Genius or anything, but I know the ropes) and I am sure this is not normal behavior for an Apple computer (or any computer of that matter).
I'm so frusterated I'm not sure what to do. What's wrong with my computer? How can I get Apple to help me? How can I get Apple to even believe me? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you so much for reading my very long (and rather dramatic) story.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the advice. Perhaps I'll ask them about it next time this problem occurs, although carrying the thing through a mall that is only about a mile away is the least of my worries. I'll do if it is both free (I don't make enough at my job to pay for such a service) and relatively speedy, although I'd hate for them to come over and for the computer to work properly (as bad as that sounds). It'd be a wasted trip and nothing would get fixed.
I'm contemplating videotaping myself performing my "fixes" on it the next time I have this problem.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes at start up all the time after few months of working well

My problem with Photoshop started last week. It hangs (freezes) all the time and I am not able to work on it at all. I did reinstall the photoshop, created a new user on my imac, cleaned preferences and I don't have a CD in my my DVD drive, but it still crashes every time I open it. Doesn't allow me to do anything. Any suggestions? I can see the top menu items, but the moment I click on HELP it hangs. If I open a file I can't do anything with it as it freezes.
Details as per above: Mac OS X 10.5.4, iMac, 2.4GHZ INTEL CORE 2 DUO, 2GB 667 DDR2 SD RAM - 2x1GB, 320GB Serial ATA Drive (129 GB free space), SuperDrive 8x DL, two external 500 GB hard drives (one storage and the other one for time machine backup), Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium-Photoshop CS3. All other applications from the suite work with no problems, just photoshop hangs every time i try to click anything. I have to force quit every time.
The only new thing I did is install a new Lexmark Wi-Fi X9350 printer. Would this be a problem?
Thanks for any help I can get...

Thank you, thank you and again thank you!!! It works!! I have no idea which did it but I did put ~ in front of the TWAIN.plugin and got rid of the printer. I was so upset about it and now I can smile again.... Hope it will work with no problems now...
Did I say thank you enough...
