My Windows 8.1 is not activated?

HI,
As I was going through buying Microsoft Office just last night. I came across my computer specs an OS details and it says that my current System isn't activated. I bought this laptop as a return/floor model/refurbished product at Best Buy and it did not come with said Windows DVD or papers. The computer, i was told, was only reset and checked for physical and hardware/sytem damage. When I bought it it had alrerady had everything installed. All I had to do was register it under my personal info ect.
So know I'm left without being able to activate my laptop the I bought under a month ago and I have no idea how to fix it. Anyone have any tips on how to activate the OS. Is it even necessary to activate it. Will I be able to download and run all my programs like, Autodesk software: Revit, AutoCAD, Maya and Design Suite etc, MS Office, Adobe, without any problems?
PS my PC say its got a current keycode active, but on the <Control Panel> <System and Security> <System> <Windows Activation> it says windows not activated. When I follow the active -> Activate Online, it says cannot activate online.
Any help ya'll can throw at me is very well appreciated. Thank ya'll in advanced.

Desco,
Welcome to the HP Forum.
I am NOT the best one to answer this question -- I do not know that much about how all the ways a system gets into this state; I might miss something obvious.
I will try to help.
Because you bought the computer at a legitimate local retail store, you can try going back to them and see what they say -- Best Buy on the West Coast does have a varied history of customer satisfaction, so good luck with that.
You might be able to get help from Microsoft Windows -- yes, really. If the software is legitimate, they might be able to help.
Start here: Why can't I activate Windows?
This document is not really a match to your situation; it is a "well, this is your creek and paddle area".
You might be able to get help over the phone -- again from Microsoft -- the tech probably knows the questions to ask and you have, well, what you have. You can ask.
You might be able to get help from an actual Microsoft Store if you live in or near a large metropolitan area when you can find a Microsoft brick-and-mortar retail store. Take your Best Buy receipt and plead your case. This sometimes works when talking on the phone will not -- you can prove who you are, at least.

Purchase Windows 8.1 Pro
If you purchased the computer for enough off from the original purchase price, think of this as the "bait and switch" part of the deal -- you may have to purchase a new copy of Windows 8.1 Pro.
The good news about purchasing new software -- it's yours and the problem is solved.

Yes, you can do something like that. What you would do is create a button for each image and then hide them. When I do this type of thing I place all of the buttons on a template page and then hide the template.
You can then use JavaScript to copy the icon from any of the hidden buttons to the main button that you've set up to display the image. For example, suppose you set up 10 buttons named b1, b2, b3, ...b10. The code to copy the icon from one of them to the button used to display the image (b0) would be something like this:
// Get the icon from the b3 button
var oIcon = getField("b3").buttonGetIcon();
// Get reference to the b0 button
var f = getField("b0");
// Set the icon of the b0 button to the icon retrieved from the hidden button
f.buttonSetIcon(oIcon);
// Show the b0 button
f.display = display.visible;
This code would go in the Mouse Up event of the smaller button.

• Windows 8.1 Not Activating On KMS Host

I have a KMS 3.1 running on 2008R2. The goal is to be able to activate Windows 8.1. It all appears to be running properly, but the client running 8.1 will not activate. Below are a series of
questions and errors:
Environment:
Server: VAMT 3.1 on WS 2008R2
Client: Windows 8.1 Enterprise
Questions:
After installing the VAMT 3.1, on the server hosting the application I ran slmgr /ipk <<using a key for the ws 2008 R2>>
Any other key returned an invalid key error.
Is this the correct key to use?
When do I use the slmgr /ipk, on the client the I need to activate or on the VAMT (KMS) server?
When adding new Windows 8.1 KMS keys to the VAMT, am I suppose to use the public ones or the keys from our VL account?
KMS Client Setup Keys: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867.aspx
When do I use the GLVK (listed on the site above) versus the CSVLK?
Errors:
On the client
I have ran: slmgr /ipk MHF9N-XY6XB-WVXMC-BTDCT-MKKG7 (this is a GVLK) on the client and success.
Then I go and do: slmgr /ato and I get:
Event logs show:
The client has sent an activation request to the key management service machine.
Info:

I run the nslookup to confirm the dns entries: success
On the server
Within VAMT, I right click on the client which I wish to activate and select:
I get the following error: The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information.
If I select Volume activate, I get:
The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information.
I run slmgr /dli, I get:
And if I run slmgr /dli all, I get:
I do not see anything licensed.

Don thank you for the reply ... So I have gone ahead and installed our KMS key for WS 2012 Standard R2, and this is what I get now:

Empty the Safari cache more often.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select: Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

• Windows 2008 R2 KMS server not activating Windows 8.1

We have a 2008 R2 server running VAMT 3.1 and with KB2757817 installed. I added our Windows Server 2012 and Windows 2012 R2 KMS product keys to the KMS host as well as our Windows 8.1 KMS key, and restarted the system.
So that when I look at the list of Product Keys I see the following keys:
Windows Server 2012 RTM ServerDataCenter;ServerStandard;ServerMultiPointStandard;ServerMultiPointPremium Volume:CSVLK
Win 8.1 RTM Enterprise;EnterpriseN;Professional;ProfessionalN Volume:CSVLK
Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM ServerDataCenter;ServerStandard Volume:CSVLK
Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM Std and Ent Volume:CSVLK (KMS_B)
Windows 7 All Volume Editions Volume:CSVLK
I then go to one of our Windows 8.1 systems and run the following commands:
cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /skms <servername>
cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato
and I get the following error message:
"Error: 0xC004F074 The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information."
Meanwhile Windows 7 clients still activate without a problem.
On the KMS host I run slmgr /dlv and get the following:
Name: Windows Server(R), ServerStandard edition
Description: Windows Operating System - Windows Server(R), VOLUME_KMS_R2_B channel

I've seen in other articles that the description should be
"VOLUME_KMS_2012-R2" channel instead of "VOLUME_KMS_R2_B channel"
My question is how do I get the 2008 R2 KMS host to activate Windows 8.1 clients?
Did I miss a step in adding the 2012 R2 KMS key, and if I did what step did I miss?

It's not possible to add Windows Vista/7/8.0/8.1 KMShost pkeys into a WindowServer OS - they will not install, because the KMShost pkey must activate the host OS as well as perform KMShost functions, and, a WindowsClientOS pkey will never be accepted on
a WindowsServerOS.
Similarly, you can't install multiple Windows pkeys - only the last (acceptable) pkey will be kept - all previous pkeys will be displaced/removed (last in wins).
Your slmgr output clearly shows that you have the WS2008R2 KMShost pkey, in place. You need to install the WS2012R2 KMshost pkey to get your 8.1 KMSclients to activate.
KMShost pkeys are "cumulative", i.e. WS2012R2 KMShost pkey will activate all lower versions of both WindowsServer and WindowsClient OS.

• The inspector is staying on top. How do I set it to follow the main window so it is not on top of active app?

I keep the inspector open when using ical. This problem seems to be new to Lion that the inspector window says topmost even when ical is not active. Any way to change this behavior or is it a bug?

Go into Settings, General, Dat & Time, and set your time zone to New York. That will set the correct time.

Then you need to take it back to where you bought it and ask them for help? What are you talking about ID is invalid? This part is confusing and not very clear?

• The Files window in Dreamweaver stays in front when it is not active

How do I get the Files window in Dreamweaver CC to 'jump' behind the active window. It is VERY ANNOYING(!) as it is now when it stays in front on the screen although it is not active. I remember it was like this in an earlier version of DW also, but it was fixed after an update.

• Following update Word:mac window won't enlarge/Restore button on Time machine not active

I have found two issues following automatic installation of the Security Update 2014-005 that took place last night.
The first is when I open Word:mac my window is super-small (2"x2") and will not enlarge using the manual "pull" although the arrows do appear when my mouse touches the edge of the window.
When I could not discover a way to correct this, I decided to restore from my Time Machine backups, but my Time Machine Back-ups won't all me to restore. I can see the back-ups are there but the option to Restore is not active- I can select the various back-ups and only the Cancel option is active.
Since it seems I cannot go back I may try to upgrade the OS to Yosemite to see if that helps.
Help is appreciated.

So the issue with Word:mac was a glitch that resolved by changing, then reverting, screen resolution options.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2008-macword/word-view-stu ck-small-and-wont-expand/bfd3fcd7-97bf-4e3d-998d-b5476bf2e83b
And apparently I can't restore from a back-up following a security update. This would have to be done using the recovery mode since firmware was updated.
Good enough.

• Webbrowser control window not activated

I have a multi-child application, some of them holds a MS Webbrowser control loading an html document containing an applet.
When selecting an applet by clicking on it, the corresponding child window is not activated but the focus is well transfered to a textfield owned by the applet.
The previously activated child window steal appears activated
When using TAB on that child window, focus traversal seems to still work well
But when typing alpha keys, corresponding generated text goes to the applet's textfield.
Anyone could help me please, it's a very annoying problem
Thanks

Hi Cor,
Thanks for the reply.
I tried the same URL on IE9 and it works fine and also my test machine has IE9 on it. I found the info on registry entry change from here:
