My wireless WRT54GL is sooooo slow.... pages rarely load completely

this thing seems to be getting slower and slower. it takes over 5 minutes to load a web page. i tried a range expander and that was actually worst... my signal is always good/very good with speeds 36 mbps. ive updated the firmware... are there any hacks i can try before i try to return this thing?
i had the cable co out here to test and they said everything was perfect.
im also constantly getting this message when trying to connect to sites.
The server at forums.linksys.com is taking too long to respond.

That's much better now.
Am I correct assuming your network has still the SSID "linksys"? Are you using wireless security? The drastic change only by changing the channel looks to me as if you have somebody else with a "linksys" router in your proximity. Two routers with the identical SSID, with no wireless security on the same channel will very much interfere with each other as any traffic for "linksys" will always go to both routers and both routers will reply. Therefore if you are still running "linksys" as SSID you should really change it to something unique.
You could simply scan for other networks in your neighbor with your wireless client. Unplug your router for a moment from power to make sure that your router won't be listed. If you are using "linksys" and still your client shows a network "linksys" in the list of available networks (most likely it will even try to connect there) then you know you have somebody else with a Linksys router in default configuration. If that is actually the case you MUST change the SSID otherwise you will run into frequent problems everytime your wireless clients accidentally tries to connect to your neighbor's router.
For a secure operation of an wireless router
- you must change the SSID to something unique
- use WPA2 Personal or WPA Personal for encryption.
Only then you can be sure to connect to your router and not another and only you can connect and nobody else.

  • Pages not loading completely

I am seeing intermittent issues with web pages not loading completely, or taking a long time to load. Some times embedded images will not load. The page will often load, but the page loading icon in chrome will carry on spinning.
This is happening periodically and at various times of the day, but has been going on for a couple of weeks. The rest of the time, my broadband speeds are fine and very snappy, as normal.
I've restarted my router (homehub 3) several times.
This doesn't seem to be a general speed problem.
Using speedtest.net, i can see that my download speed is pretty consistent at just under 20mbps.
Using pingtest.net i see no packet loss, with good ping times.
Using the BT speedtest tool, my line speed to the house is around 23mbps, and my download speed is again around 20mbps.
This is effecting all devices attached to the router, both wired and wifi... both windows PC/laptops and ipad/iphone devices.
I am not sure where to look next, and am kind of dreading a conversation with BT helpdesk.
    Any ideas?

Thanks... That's a long thread, and I am not going to pretend to understand all of it.
It seems to be similar issue, but I am seeing this any webiste, including this one, not just on a handful of specific sites.
If I understand the thread above correctly, that issue is with BT, and was apparantly fixed, although the most recent post suggests it has not been. And that if this is the same problem, I can't do anything to fix this myself, other than raise this BT?
Having played around a little more, I think I can see that this problem becomes more accute when i am jumping rapidly from one webpage to another in quick succession, until i get to the point where pages are just not loading anymore.

  • I have some web pages that loaded completely when using 3G but partially loaded using Wifi.

I have some web pages that loaded completely when using 3G but partially loaded (only text without any images ) using Wifi. Is it a site specific issue?

Can you rule out the NoScript extension as a cause of the issues on those sites? Even if you allow the main site to run scripts, often a website will spread its content over additional servers, so you may need to visit the "S" button menu a second or third time to get full functionality. (Over time, you'll recognize some the servers as being for ads, tracking, or sharing buttons and you can just let those parts of the page not work.)

  • Safari 5-slow, pages wont load

i downloaded safari 5 today and ever since the pages are loading SUPER slow.
i deleted cookies & downloaded the 10.5.8 update combo (as suggested by a computer person).
some pages load ok, not as fast as they used to. some just wont load at all.
oh no. have i ruined my new prized possession? help or tips anyone? these discussion threads are discouraging so far.

    HI,
Your forum profile indicates you are running v10.6.4 but you downloaded the v10.5.8 update? v10.6 is Snow Leopard, v10.5 is Leopard so I'm not sure exactly what you were trying to accomplish.
For Safari... From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If Safari still lags loading pages...
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If third party add-ons aren't the issue, repair disk permissions especially if you didn't do this after the Safari 5 update.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari. Move the "cache.db" file to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.
If nothing above has helped, login to another user account. Try Safari there. If pages are still slow to load, then the problem is system wide, not just isolated to your Home Folder.

  • Pages not loading completely with JavaScript enabled

This just started in the last day or so. I have Safari extensions disabled.
When I go to the ThinkProgress.org site/blog, I'm getting an incomplete page unless I disable JavaScript. With JavaScript, I'll get the first post on the blog, but nothing else. With JavaScript off I get the site looking pretty much normal.
I get a similar problem if I go to Economist.com and click to read one of the stories. In that case, I get the story's headline, but it cuts off before the text of the article, right after a link to Tweet the story. Again, disabling JavaScript allows the page to load correctly.
I suspect some third-party service is providing a script, which broke in the last day or so, but nobody's paying attention because of the Holidays.
The problem doesn't appear to effect Chrome. Safari was upgraded to 5.0.3 in November, but this problem is more recent than that.
    Has anyone else seen this?

    Hi Jonathan,
    Go to the Economist.com site.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Select the box next to: Show Develop menu in menu bar.
Now click Develop / Disable Runaway JavaScript Timer.
See if that makes a difference.
Otherwise, check Safari / Preferences - Extensions or try disabling Safari plugins, Safari / Preferences - Security.
And delete the cookies associated with those url's in Safari / Preferences - Security. Show Cookies

  • Pages not loading completely or at all.

This is a problem I've been having for weeks and weeks. Pages in Safari (or in IE or in Firefox) will not load completely or at all. For example, the apple.com homepage does not load at all and neither does ebay. However, the amazon homepage will load almost completely, but a few of the images don't appear.
    I've tried numerous ideas.
I've run through the power cycle. (Turning my router and cable modem off, and then restarting them.)
    I've run network diagnotics.
    I've reset Safari.
I've typed in IP addresses manually.
    We bought a new router.
It even got down to me having to reinstall the operating system. (The computer is fairly new, so there wasn't any important information on it.)
I tried calling my ISP, but they don't know what's wrong.
Apple won't speak to me because my 90 days is up, and my parents won't pay $160 for the care plan.
I'm becoming desperate at this point. I love my new iMac, but there isn't much I can do without the web.
Oh, I also can't download updates, access the iTunes music store, or anything else that requires internet acces.
We have three windows computers in the house that are all running fine on the WLAN.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Any other ideas?
Hmm, can you try logging into another user account to see if the problem is present there as well? This will confirm where the root issue is - your user area or system wide. It sounds like it wil be system wide but best to double check.
If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to remove it if needed).
I've typed in IP addresses manually.
Can you expand on what you mean by that? Are you referring to the DNS addresses or typing the IP address in the browsers address entry box?

  • Firefox 4 sucks! Why can't I save my tabs when closing Firefox, & why can't I have a red X to stop a slow page from loading?

    NOT FASTER!! MUCH SLOWER!!
When I close Firefox, I can no longer save my tabs. WHAT GIVES?
When a new page isn't coming up, I can no longer stop it from loading & try again.
WHY do my tabs need to be above the toolbars?
I've loved using Firefox & have used it exclusively for about the last ten years, but if this is how it's always going to be now, I'm going to look for a new browser!
''moderator edited the title of this thread''

The described fix seems to work fine, and I appreciate the fast response.
Firefox developers, I've been a developer myself. Setting the default to not save tabs in Firefox 4 is going to make a lot of people VERY angry.
I'm a fairly educated user. After upgrading, the first thing I did was to check Preferences and try to make sure all settings were good to maintain what I've been accustomed to doing. I didn't take the Firefox 4 tour, but shut down the application to make sure caches were emptied. There was no warning about my multiple tabs, but it was too late to stop the process. When I opened it again, all my tabs were gone, some of which related to material or local logins that I will have a hard time re-creating.
If my wife had done this, you would have heard her swearing without benefit of phone or online chat window, no matter where your labs are. :-)
For everyone's sanity, please don't turn off the Preserve Tabs on Logout function without warning.

  • Slow page up loads on other computers

I have a iweb site that I use to communicate with large group of people with different levels of internet access ie. slow speed connections, broad band, dial up and older model PCs etc...
I want my site to be easy and quick to use. How can I best set up my site for quick load ups and transfers between pages.
    Tips welcome...

Optimize any photos or other image you plan to use on the pages. This is probably the #1 mistake people make. iWeb kind of makes it too easy to drop huge files everywhere.
Avoid using shadows, non-standard fonts, image rotation, transparency and image borders. All these things cause iWeb to generate PNG image and PNG images are generally far larger in size. Gradients will create PNGs too.
    After that, you're pretty safe.

  • Web pages not loading completely or crash

6/10 time I go to open a page (usually a new tab with up 2 30tabs open) but problem still occurs with.1 tab load a page the progress bar gets.to about 98% and freezes with a blank screen. Or page starts to load but as soon as you go to scroll down rest of pages is blurry. This is on latest firefox for android beta on android 4.4.2 sony.xperia z1 6903 latest firmware 14.3.A.0.757

    Hi mrx7,
Your older crash reports were caused by the Javascript JIT compiler (javascript.options.baseline.jit.*) so disabling those prefs MIGHT have solved the issues in 28. However, your new crash report is showing something related to graphics. I'm not quite sure what though.

  • When opening a new tab, Firefox often freezes for a few seconds until the page has loaded completely.

When I open a new tab, the tab must load completely before Firefox will respond at all. I cannot do anything in Firefox; Windows and the rest of my programs that are running are unaffected. This happens randomly, but it is more common on certain websites. How do I fix this?
    Thanks!

Please check for the problem in [[safe mode|safe mode]].. does it work there?

  • Guestconnect wireless connection is dead slow

After installing Certificate on NGS , Guestconnect wireless connection is dead slow. (takes more than 1 minute to load Splash page ,which is stalled on NGS)
We have another Anchore controller with NGS in DR site. Whenever we pointing WLC to DR Anchor controller ,no issue.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks

The certificate shouldn't cause this, unless there is an issue getting to the Internet to validate the certificate.
It could still be a duplex issue between the NGS and the Internet connection at the non-DR site.

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite my computer is so slow. It takes forever for a page to load. Any suggestions?

Since upgrading my MacBook Pro to Yosemite my computer is so slow. It takes forever for a page to load. Any suggestions?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Slow page loads over LAN with 500GB TC

    Hello,
Forgive me if this has already been touched on, I tried to run through the first six pages and didn't see anything that I thought matched my problem. I saw that there were reports of slow wireless speeds, but I have been experiencing problems over the wired connection to my TC
I have a MBP connected to the TC wirelessly and a Mac Pro with a wired connection to the TC. They both render similar speeds in a speed test ~4Mbits down, but on my Mac Pro, I get excruciatingly slow page loads. Pages often take, on average, 15-20 seconds to come up at all, and some more time to finish loading completely. Meanwhile, I can load the same pages in a few seconds with my MBP over the wireless network.
My cable coming from the TC to my Mac Pro is brand new, its at least CAT5e, and should be able to handle my down speeds without a problem. So I'm at a loss for what could be causing this. Could it be something with the computer and not the TC at all?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Well, creating a test user put me on the right path. Deleting the systemconfiguration folder did not help, but I deleted the following files out of the $user/library/preferences folder:
    com.apple.internetconfig.plist
    com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    com.apple.networkConnect.000a27b47970.plist
    com.apple.preference.internet.plist
    com.apple.PrefPane.Network.000a27b47970.plist
Basically any preference with "Network" or "Internet" in it and everything sped up immediately. Thanks for the help.

  • Here is a very slow page in Safari 5.1

Safari before 5.1 has had no problem loading this page:
    http://panlex.org/u
But in 5.1 requesting this page makes WebProcess start consuming 100%+ of CPU and it takes 105 seconds under Snow Leopard on a 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon Mac Pro and 65 seconds under Lion on a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 MacBook Pro, before the page is ready to do anything (scroll or press a button) with.
To check whether there might be a font or character causing this problem, I have replicated the situation with various subsets of the table being displayed. Displaying 1000 rows speeds the loading, but it still takes about 15 seconds on the Snow Leopard machine, regardless of which 1000 rows are displayed. (These times are over a LAN, so no Internet latency.) Similar problem on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook.
The loading time is not appreciably decreased if the page is loaded again in succession.

    Thanks for helping diagnose this.
However, my testing indicates that this is not a bug with border-collapse: collapse. Here is why:
If I change the value of border-collapse to "separate" and add "border-spacing: 0", the bug remains. To try this, request http://www.panlex.org/cgi-bin/plxu28-bug2.cgi .
If I leave the value of border-collapse unchanged but change the button elements in the cells to plain text, the bug disappears. To try this, request http://www.panlex.org/cgi-bin/plxu28-bug1.cgi .
On the basis of this testing, it would seem to me that the bug is dependent on the button elements and independent of the border-collapse CSS attribute.
This doesn't explain, however, why you have found border-collapse: collapse producing slow results with other large tables and it doesn't do so with my table in http://www.panlex.org/cgi-bin/plxu28-bug1.cgi . It also doesn't explain why you saw the bug disappear when you changed border-collapse on my page but I didn't see it disappear.
Any further diagnostic help would be welcome.

I'm having the same problem. Dreamweaver is supper slow. Uploading and downloads from the server... any server I use two different servers. It times out all the time. Menus are slow too.
I'm on a MAC Pro, 6 gigs of ram no issues with anything else. I have talked to Apple they have checked everything for me. They say it's Dreamweaver. I've noticed the Dreamweaver is talking to the FTP even when I'm not doing anything.
I've tried cleaning out my MAC caches, turning off file check and check out. Still really slow. I've worked with Dreamweaver for 6 years never any issues like this before. 18 seconds to upload a 4 kb file. 11 seconds to download the same file.
