My wondrous 160GB iPod classic these days.

Up until a few days ago, I was able to sync my iPod with my new HP laptop with no problem. Then, I started not being able to sync my whole library at once, Now, iTunes freezes up whenever I connect the device, and then wonderfully works when its disconnected. and its listed as a Removable Device under my computer, instead of itself. Any and all suggestions? I'm running Windows 8. I've got about 71 GB of music on my iTunes, if that matters any. It also says that I have 148 GB used up, yet there's no music pulling up to show for it. I've tried manually resetting it to no avail, also. I put it in disk mode, then it said to restore the iPod via iTunes, but I can't do such a thing if iTunes locks up every time I plug my iPod in. Thanks for taking the time to read this if it pulls up to anyone sooner, rather than later.

  • My wondrous 160GB iPod classic, part 2.

Halfway made it out of the first problem, and now I believe I have a new one. After resetting and putting my iPod into disk mode and connecting it without iTunes pulling up, I've been watching my screen flip between the "Do not disconnect" screen and then the screen with the apple insignia for a few hours now. When I first unplugged it as soon as the "do not disconnect" went away to show me the apple, it told me to restore my iPod via iTunes. However, all it does is go right back to telling me not to disconnect while iTunes doesn't pull the device up, or recognise it as a device if that's correctly putting it. Anymore tips or suggestions?

  • 6th Gen. 160GB iPod Classic won't mount on 10.4.11

    Hi,
I'm desperate for a solution! Would somebody please help me!
    Here is my problem:
I have a 6th Generation 160GB iPod Classic that will no longer mount onto my PPC G4 10.4.11.
On this iPod I have a few thousand photos of a trip to Mexico that I kept on here until I returned home to sync them.
The other day, I started synching them into iPhoto 6.0.6, and it was working fine for the first half, but stalled around the middle. I could not find any way to get the synching process to continue or to quit / force quit the program successfully. Force quit did not actually terminate the process/program. I know at the time it was a mistake, but I unplugged the iPod cable from the iPod and held the computer's power button until it shut off.
Today, when plugging the iPod back into the computer:
    1) it no longer mounts (though the iPod partition is viewable (grayed out) in Disk Utility.
    2) because it does not mount in Disk Utility (I've tried many times including a separate iPod restart) it is also not viewable in Finder or in Terminal.
    3) The iPod Settings Display that it is completely empty (though I know the files are still on there).
    4) iPhoto recognized that there were more photos that still needed to be synched and asked if I wanted to continue, which I'm not able to do.
    5) iTunes 8.0.2 tells me that I need to restore my iPod (which I can't do because I need these files, and can't erase them off of the iPod).
Does anybody know a workaround to save these files, which are extremely important to me, and cannot be erased under any circumstances? I would be extremely grateful for any help!
    Please Help Me!
    Thanks.

    deggie,
    thanks for responding.
just to let you know, I had the same problem before (when my iPod was brand new), but the problem was just with media already in my iTunes Library, so I tried to restore a bunch of times, and that didn't work. At the time, I had Apple Care, so I brought it to a Genius to restore. When I arrived home, it still wouldn't sync, but one last restore in my iTunes, and I got it working fine again. Ridiculous!
This time, I have already tried the iPod disk mode / Diagnostic mode, as -well-as connecting on a new user computer account (same computer), and on a different computer using a different iPod cable. All of this yielded the exact same results. The USB drive is detected (such as dev/disk2), but the iPod partition (dev/disk2s2) is grayed out in Disk Utility and is not accessible.
The closest luck I've had so far is downloading/installing the demo of Disk Rescue II, which produced a "thorough scan" of the entire drive (one block at a time). I was able to see somewhere between half to most of my files on there, and am not sure about the remaining undetected files. The demo only let me restore a single 5MB file, but am at least assured that most of it should be able to be recovered once I pay for the full version.
I am, however, interested to understand why some of my files were not recognizable. For example, during a class, I had a bunch of 100MB-400MB .wav files recorded with a Belkin TuneTalk Stereo Microphone that connects via the iPod Dock connector. The majority of these files I moved into a separate folder I created on the iPod as a way to organize them. Those files were either not discovered, or somehow not viewable in the Data Rescue II scan results. The last couple of files I recorded with the mic (and did not move elsewhere on the iPod) interestingly were automatically synced and playlisted in my iTunes (I did not tell it to sync), and are still playable on my iPod. Also, I may be wrong, but I don't believe all of my photos were detected by Data Rescue II. It seems like many random photos from each photo folder I created on my iPod were missing/not detected/not viewable, so at first glance it might appear like they all show up, but the file count doesn't look correct. I was expecting more files to be detected than there were. To my knowledge the Scanning between Demo version/full version should be the same, so I can only speculate until I buy the full version/restore to see which files I'm dealing with.
I would love to hear any other thoughts/ideas/solutions.
No doubt this iPod is getting restored (possibly at an apple store) when this is all done. From now on, I'm doing everything possible to backup on DVD's while on trips. I can't trust my iPod alone to be a dependable backup. This is unnacceptable!

  • Windows Vista not recognizing my new 160GB ipod classic

I'm having a terrible time getting Windows Vista or itunes to recognize my 160GB ipod classic (ipod software version 1.0.3 PC). I've spent the last two days going through the 5 Rs (4 or 5 times, now)... updated all the USB drivers... reassigned my slave drive letter to make sure there's no conflict... nothing is working.
The ipod is seen in the Device Manager as an "unknown device", but that's it.
The "USB Mass Storage Device" and "Apple ipod Controller" are listed under the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and all drivers are up to date.
When I try to update and install the driver for the "unknown device", it automaticly searches windows and the internet, but finds nothing. When I point it towards my C:\Windows\System32 folder (as suggested elsewhere) it locates a driver... but encounters an "unknown error" when installing.
Absolutely nothing works! I'm not new to itunes, ipods or working with Windows Vista. This is terribly frustrating as I now have a $350 paperweight! Ironiclly, I just sold and sent off my 5g 60GB (WORKING!) ipod, too!
    Ugggggghhhhhhhh!!!
    Please, please, please help!

Update: (Not that anything is fixed yet)
Deleting infcache1 (as suggested elsewhere) had no effect... nor did moving around the usbappl.inf files forom the file repository as described here: http://teknobabble.wordpress.com/200...er-a-solution/
Vista just keeps asking for a driver and when I point it towards one... runs into an error when intalling. The hotfix provided adressing this exact issue (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940199) hasn't worked nad I get an error saying "This update doesn't apply to your system". O Rly!?! Hmmmm... Windows Vista 32... exact same error when mounting my ipod. Sure SOUNDS like it SHOULD!
Tried this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925196/en-us but actually found the CD/DVD upper and lower filters in a different key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Still no joy, though. Starting itunes just gives an error message saying it requires the registry entry to burn CD's and asks that I re-install itunes. Attempts to connect prior to reinstalling (since it still runs) have no effect.
Tried restarting itues service http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307078 but it just hangs. Reinstalling and restarting has no effect.
It just kills me that I can see the ipod connected in the Device Manager ("unknown device") and in Computer Management/Storage/Disc Management ("Rmovable Disc 1" with 148 GB).
So frustrating. This is the first problem I've run into with Vista that has stumped me for more than 24-hours and has really got me feeling stupid.

  • Suspicous HD sound on new 160GB iPod Classic

    Hi there,
yesterday I bought one of the new 160GB iPod Classic to replace my old iPod Photo. After loading some music I noticed that the harddrive is really loud and makes disturbing sounds (spinning, clicking and chattering, obviously HD sounds) whenever I switch to the main menu or start playing albums.
Ok, I know that Hard drives do make noises while operating but what disturbs me is the volume. You can hear it even when the iPod is lying on a table one meter away and it is considerably louder than my iMacs working volume for example. In comparison my 4 year old iPod Photo is really silent, I have to put the iPod to my ear to hear the HD sound - the only times I heard a HD sound of this kind is whenever my old iPod froze/the HD crashed and I had to reset it. So whenever my Classic starts to spin its HD I think it's gonna freeze/crash and it freaks me out.
I contacted Amazon (where I bought it) and they told me that HD drive noises are normal and that I should contact Apple.
So, is this normal or a case in which I should try to get a replacement from Apple?

Amazon kept claiming that this ipod HD is not defective, still I returned the iPod to them using my right to return any item within 14 days of purchase. With the refund I walked to a local electronics market and bought their last iPod Classic 120GB (with a 25% discount).
Now the sound difference becomes even more obvious to me. The 120GB's HD is considerably more silent than my former 160GB (no high pitch, you can't hear the HD spining unless you put it to your ear, the HD clicks is not lounder than pressing the click wheel). The iPod I originally got must have been a flawed one. I can't imagine that Apple unleashes such an unconvenient product on its customers as a regular item. I'm eager to know if more buyers of the new 160GB complain about the HD sound and if a production flaw (?) of new HD modell is repsonsible for it.

  • Can I use my old accessories for a 40GB (4G) iPod with new 160GB iPod Classic?

    I just purchased a 160GB (7G) iPod Classic. I had been using a 40GB (4G) iPod.
The male connectors on  the accessories I used with my 40GB iPod seem to fit into the female connector on my new 160 GB. So, I am wondering if I can use these old accessories with my new 160GB iPod Classic. The old accessories I used with my 40GB (4G) iPod are as follows.
    1) Wall charger made by Apple. It has a firewire connection at one end of the charger cord which connects to  the small white plastic box of the charger that plugs into the wall. The other end of the charger cord seems to fit my iPod 160GB Classic.
    2) Dock made by Apple. It uses a firewire connection cord to my computer, in contrast to the USB connection cord that came with my 160GB iPod Classic.
    3) Car chargers that worked with my old 40GB, 4G  iPod. The car charger connectors seems to fit my new 160GB iPod Classic. One car charger is made by Apple. The other is not made by Apple.
So, could you please tell me if I can use any or all of these old accessories with my new 160GB Classic without damaging it.
    Thanks.
    Richard

  • New 160Gb ipod classic will not be see in in Itunes V11.3.1(2)

I bought a new 160Gb Ipod classic. I bought it because my previous 2, older ipod classics, stopped syncing. One day they worked the next they didnt. I swear this happened after an Itunes update too. Anyway, I took one to Tekserve (local Apple service provider) and they told me one of the pins in the ipod i brought to them was damaged so the connection couldnt be made. I didnt really buy the answer, but since the ipod was older i figured, ok, I'll get a new one. Well I just got a new one. opened up the box, took out a new USB cord, plugged it into my computer and boom, NOTHING. The computer recognizes it in the Finder (MAC OS 10.6.8). Then again the MAC recognized my other 'broken' ipods too, Itunes just doesnt.
So I had hunch before this this problem has to be a software bug. Now its confirmed. There is no way a brand new ipod should not be seen in Itunes. Trust me i tried all the normal 'Ipod doesnt sync support stuff' and it doesnt  solve the problem. This is an advanced problem and one that i need  real answer on. Does an ipod classic work with Itunes  V11.3.1(2) running on a MAC 10.6.8 OS? Ipod classics still cost $250 which is ridiculous since the technology is 5 years old, so if Apple stopped supporting them on the new Itunes without making that know I think there should be some serious press about this!
    Please help.

Well I finally figured out the problem, not thanks to anyone from Apple for that matter. You would asume this problem has happened before and is still happening. The problem was I couldn't copy certain songs anymore from iTunes to my iPod Classic. When trying to copy certain songs I got an error.
If you have this problem it means your song file is corrupted. You can simply check this by trying to copy it from your hard drive to an external hard drive. Here you will also get an error message.
This means you need to replace all the corrupted files by a back up on your hard drive or download it again. I did this and now everything works fine.
Hope this will solve a lot of problems.

  • My 160GB ipod classic stopped whilst playing music and will not turn back on despite having almost a full battery. I have tried connecting to itunes and a docking station but will not turn on at all - HELP?!

My 160GB ipod classic stopped whilst playing music and will not turn back on despite having almost a full battery. I have tried connecting to itunes and a docking station but will not turn on at all - HELP?!
I've had this from new for 2 years, the battery life is excellent and lasts for days so I know it's not a power issue as it was fully charged that morning. No signs of connection in itunes, it's not showing as a connected device.
    Can anyone please help?

  • How can I Replace a Hard Drive on a 160gb iPod Classic?

How can I Replace a Hard Drive on a 160gb iPod Classic? I am considering buying an iPod Classic off of eBay which is described as 'broken' and having the 'Red X' showing up on the screen. The seller is starting the bid at a very low price, which raises some concerns for me. For this thread, let us assume that the iPod has a broken hard drive that needs to be replaced in order to function properly. I am assuming that merely 'restoring' it would not suffice. How would I be able to replace the hard drive myself, without bringing it in to a store? I have never fixed an iPod's hardware before, nor a computer or any electrical device. I am a novice at such things. Would I be able to fix it myself without wasting money on a broken iPod and new hard drive? Please provide instructions on how to do so =)

    Hello there,
Yes, the red X icon is usually a sign of a bad or damaged hard drive. Sometimes, restoring the iPod will resolve the issue, but rarely. Other users were able to smack the ipod against the side of their leg and gain back full functionality of the iPod.
However, if no such luck with either, your next option would be to replace the drive. For this task, you can either opt to repair and replace the hard drive yourself, or opt to send it into a third party repair business to do the job for you.
I use the guides at [www.ifixit.com|http://www.ifixit.com> to help me replace broken parts on an iPod. These guides provide excellent step-by-step instructions as well as photos on how to repair any part from an iPod.
Some other good sites for purchasing repair parts include the following:
    [iDemiGods|http://www.idemigods.com>
    [RapidRepair|http://www.rapidrepair.com>
    [iResq|http://www.iresq.com>
Lastly, I would also like to remind you that ebay also has several great deals on excellent iPod replacement parts. It's where I purchase a majority of mine.
    Hope this helps.

  • 160gb ipod classic won't display album artwork...sometimes

I have a 160GB iPod Classic (version 2.0.4 PC), and ran into a strange problem regarding displaying album artwork. Here's what I can describe:
--> When browsing through albums, any albums that have been added to my iPod or had their info changed since a certain time (not sure of the exact date but I believe it to be July 2013) do not display artwork.
--> If these albums are played, one song from the album will not display artwork, but all the rest will. I can't detect any set pattern as to which song won't display artwork once I update it, but I'm sure there's some pattern.
--> All the album artwork is displayed on Cover Flow and on iTunes, but not in these places.
--> It doesn't matter whether I downloaded the artwork directly through iTunes (i.e. clicked "Get Album Artwork") or put in artwork from a file on my computer, this happens literally every single time.

Probably, the easiest way to resolve this is to copy the artwork from one song on an album and paste it into every song on that album.
In your iTunes Library, choose an album that has artwork issues; choose one track that has the artwork and copy it. Then:
the slightly longer method is to check each song individually, until you find the one with the missing artwork. Paste (the copy previously made) from one of the other tracks on the album.
a slightly quicker method is to highlight all the songs on that album (make sure it is just that one album) and paste the artwork into the box.
Sync the iPod with your iTunes Library.

160gb ipod classic won't sync since update to 11.2.2, system wants to wipeout all current info on device

same has happened to me,  on and off,   for the last 6 months.   Its an issue with the Mavericks system and ipod classics.    works great for a while -  then one day for no reason - erases the entire iPod.   some days the copmputer will not recognize the iPod and you have to start over.  Apple will tell you that "you" may have a disc problem in the device.  that is all the help I have received.

  • How can I make my brand new 160GB iPod Classic work?

I bought a 160GB Ipod Classic in January and have just tried to use it for the first time and it has been a disaster! I have spent hours trying to use it and failed. I have been using iTunes for some time now and have recently successfully set up Squeezebox to use the iTunes music I have uploaded from my CDs.
All started well - my system recognised the new hardware and iTunes started. I registered and said I wanted to synch my music and my photos and away it went. After 2-3GB of uploads I got an error saying
"The Owner's iPod cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found." On pressing 'OK' it then said I'd got an unknown error. Pressing 'OK' again took me back to the first error message. I then tried everything I coould including relaoding iTunes and eventually got it started again. This time it got up to about 8GB (of about 10.5GB) before abending in the same way. Since then I have failed to take another step forward in many hours.
When I connect the iPod to my PC sometimes it appears briefly in 'My Compter' then disappears. Then the errors loop thus:-
START:The iPod itself says "Connected" the a few seconds later it says "Ejecting"
The device manager has a USB Mass Storage Device with an exclamation mark on a yellow background which then says
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for'safe removal' but it has not been removed from the computer (code 47). To fix this problem, unplug the device from your computer and then plug it in again"
Doing this the causes the process to sytart again from START above.
On one occasion only, after a few hours trying, I got a message "Your iPod need to be reformatted to work with Windows" and it opened up iTunes and then sat and did nothing.
Running the diagnostics in iTunes says "No iPod found". The diagnostic information is set out below:

Have solved my own problem. My PC sits on the floor so I have a four-port USB hub on my desktop with one port in use. I use one of the other three ports for USB-related task. As I was shutting down for the night I had a - what turned out to be inspired - thought about whether there was an adequate power supply from the hub. I then tried the iPod USB connection directly into the front of my machine and everything worked. It seems that an inadequate power supply was the cause of this strange set of conditions.

  • I have a 160GB iPod classic. How do I get my HD movies from itunes to this iPod?

I have a 160GB iPod classic. I have HD and 1080P HD movies purchased through itunes. How do I get them to my iPod classic? It has plenty of storage. It gives me errors that make no sense to me. If making an error message, why can't they be more specific? The error messages unknown error occured (-50) audio and because they cannot be played on this iPod, "The Bourne Identity" was not copied because the video format is not supported by the iPod. I'm tired of buying 20 different versions of this and 20 different devices to play items I've purchased. Can anyone help with this issue please?
    Thank you.
    Henry

    Hello Henry,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when trying to sync your movies purchased through the iTunes Store to your iPod classic.  I found an article with some useful information:
The iPad and iPhone 4 can play High Definition (HD) content and Standard Definition (SD) content. iPods and the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS can play Standard Definition (SD) content. To find what video formats are supported, see the Tech Specs page, click your device's product family, and then your specific model. All HD purchases from the iTunes Store also include an iPod/iPhone-compatible Standard Definition version to accompany the HD version. When syncing an HD purchase from the iTunes Store, iTunes will automatically sync the SD video for devices that require SD content.
You can find the full article here:
iTunes: May be unable to transfer videos to iPhone, iPad, or iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1497
You can download the SD version of the movies from your list of past purchases.   You can find the steps to do this in the section titled "Apps, Books, Music, Movies, or TV shows on a computer" in the following article:
