My X1 platform fails about every hour, requiring a restart
In the last 3 weeks, my X1 service fails. It starts when I engage the remote, whether it's on demand or just the guide, and I get an error message stating something to the effect - your box isn't working - try back in a moment. The only way to resolve it is to unplug and restart.Sometimes it comes back on but without volume. Sometimes i get the big red ERROR screen. My biggest fear...that they'll send someone here to "look" at it, only to charge me a $70.00 fee for an on-site review. I'm ready to forgo Comcast and move on.Siincerely,Desperately seeking good cable
You definitely have signal issues.. You will need to have a tech out to have good cable period. Comcast will only charge you if there is a problem with your internal wiring which you own, not them.

Time Machine fails about every six months
10.8.5
MacBook Pro 13"
Wired ethernet to Time Capsule 3rd generation
Time Machine has a distressing pattern: it seems to work like a champ for about six months. Then, it fails to back-up, stuck at "Backing Up: nnKB of nnMB" where nnKB is some small but variable number. On the MBP I've repaired disk permissions and used Disk Warrior. No change. On the backup image on the Time Capsule, I used Disk Warrior. No change. I created a new temporary image, used SuperDuper! to copy the contents of the backup image to the temporary image, erased the backup image and copied the temporary image contents back to the backup image. No change.
Previously I've just deleted the backup image and started from scratch, but I'm tired of losing my accumulated backups every six months!
Any advice?Start to investigate HD clones. Time machine is a backup, not an archive or secure storage.
Some advantages of a cloned HD:
If you do an option key startup at boot you can directly boot to your cloned drive externally and operate from same like normal.
Sandboxing: With the help of the Cloned Drive, you can perform sandboxing, or the testing of new software, their updates and applications before they are installed on your Mac system. Moreover, if there are issues with the system, you can troubleshoot them by booting off the Clone. Many people test new APPS or experiment with a secondary clone and never worry about a failure or serious issue since the internal HD is untouched and the secondary clone can be wiped afterwards if any major issue occurs in testing. This is an invaluable tool in many instances.
If you sell you computer for purchase of a new one, you can take the clone you have on hand and install same or clone it to the new internal drive of your new Mac.
As it turns out one of the huge positive benefits of a clone is that people were seeing faster HD speeds; with APPS booting up from the clone than they had seen with the internal HD. The cloning applications in cloning the drive defragments the data to the clone and remove the “holes” in the cloning process.
With a small portable HD clone you can take your ‘computer’ anywhere to most any other current Mac and boot from your HD clone and have your entire system and its data immediately there for use. In case one is across the world and their macbook gets stolen, or damaged, with another Mac you can be up and 100% in the time it takes to boot to the new or borrowed Mac!
You can clone from your external clone to the internal HD/SSD in case of corruption.
The best thing that can be said, ideally, when your HD crashes with all its data is “so what, I’ve got a clone right here” and you can return to normal operation within seconds (by booting from the clone) or minutes (by swapping drives).
In separating out your system hub (OS) and your data hub, and storing them separately, is if you make only periodic clones (every month or so), and have a HD crash, the worst case outcome is that what is lost on your clone are some bookmarks and preferences since your data hub containing your vital files is constantly archived separately as it should be.
Time Machine is a system backup, not a data archive
Important data you “don’t dare lose” should not be considered ultimately safe, or ideally stored (at the very least not as sole copy of same) on your Time Machine backup. Hourly and daily fluctuations of your system OS, applications, and software updates is the perfect focus for the simple user to conduct ‘click it and forget it’ backups of the entire system and files on the Macbook HD.
Bootable clones are the choice of professionals and others in that Time Machine cannot be booted from and requires a working HD to retrieve data from (meaning another computer). Your vital data needs to be and should be ‘frozen’ on some form of media storage, either in a clone, as an archived HD containing important files, or on DVD blank archival media.
A file that is backed up to Time Machine is unsafe in that if that file is deleted off the computer by accident or lost otherwise, that file will likewise vanish from Time Machine as it reflects changes on the internal computer HD/SSD. -
Actually there are two things I use a lot that are not compatible with Firefox 5. I did switch to it and discovered the big problem, so I had to go back to my previous Firefox. One of them that I use constantly for my passwords is Roboform -- I don't remember which one but one of the most recent. I get a box in the middle of my computer about once an hour saying that I should switch to Firefox 5. It is driving me CRAZY. How can I make it stop?
Also, who has to make Roboform and Firefox 5 compatible?Every add-on developer is responsible for updating their add-on as Mozilla releases new versions of Firefox. Check with Roboform for an update for their Firefox add-on.
You can use the Add-on Compatibility Reporter to try and "fix" that other add-on.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/
ACR has worked with every 4.0 extension that I have tried it with on Firefox 5.0 - but there may be some add-ons where it won't work, and the add-on has to actually be modified by the original developer. -

After upgrading to firefox7, the browser slows after about 2 hours, requiring a reboot
I have comcast for an internet provider. MSN internet explorer is not slowed at the time Firefox7 slows to a crawl, so I think it has to do with your update. Firefox7 is my primary server.
Thanks,
FTIs the browser freezing or is browsing speed just slow?
If freezing see http://blog.bonardo.net/2011/09/30/is-your-firefor-freezing-at-regular-intervals
If browsing is slow, run a speed test next time it happens and report back (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/) -
Have to go out for a while and I need to know if when I get back I can resume the episode.
Hello there, Cokoos'nestescapee.
When you've purchased your content you can playback at anytime. The following link from the online iTunes Help menu provides information on how to accomplish this:
Ways to play movies, TV shows, and other videos
http://help.apple.com/itunes/mac/11.1/#itns3118
Control video playback
Move the pointer anywhere over the playback window to make the controls (Play/Pause, Volume, and so on) appear.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,
Pedro. -
Slapd restarting every hour?
Hi everyone
I was looking at the slapd logs just for fun and I see that every hour it is restarting. Is this normal behaviour? Or should I panic?

JamesDo you have Time Machine running on the server? That'll stop slapd for a moment so it can get a clean snapshot of the LDAP database.

HT202663 AirTunes cuts out at the same time every hour for about 20 seconds
Since converting my iMac from Lion to Mavericks a week ago, my Airtunes network dies at exactly the same time ... 51 mintes and 35 seconds every hour after the hour. It stays down for 20 seconds then picks up again without any intervention required. (iTunes itself does not stall).
My wifi network set up worked reliably for about three years before upgrading to Mavericks, streaming music from iTunes on my iMac to two AP Expresses and one AppleTV. I have an Actiontec router provided by Verizon/FiOS. The iMac is connected to the router via Ethernet.
The apparently precisely timed interruption problem manifested itself immediately after installing Mavericks.
Anybody else have anything like this?I fixed the problem. For anyone interested I disabled the IGMP service in the Actiontec router.

My firefox stops responding and fades for about a half min almost every hour, OR MORE often
My firefox stops responding and fades for about a half min almost every hour, OR MORE often.
I am typing a message or information, the screen fades to about half bright. the curser freezes in place and no key responds.
The information bar at the top of the page says "firefox not responding" in about 30 seconds it restores and continues as tho nothing happens.I might have discovered the solution without starting over with all your places and bookmarks.
Right after i installed 7.0.1 over a week ago, every 10-30 min When i would be watching videos online, it would freeze for 20-30 seconds. Firefox would say ( Not responding) both firefox and the plugin container process would be very large memory files. I tried to go back to Firefox 5.0. No avail it would still freeze.I tried to disable the plugin container . no good. I tried to adjust memory or cache or plugin settings in “about:config”.Nothing fixed it!
I finally discovered why my Firefox 7.01 was periodic hanging fix. It is something to do with some of your personal files. download this this add on and install it
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
or you can Google "places maintenance Firefox"
After you install the add on, restart Firefox.go to "tools", then "add ons" and then click “extensions” tab ,then click' options" on the "places maintenance" entry. choose "ALL' or just "expire" and hit "execute", then wait until its done., restart Firefox. should be fine then and all my bookmarks, customizations ,settings, and history stays untouched!
After i did this my Firefox did not freeze once for over 3 days straight. Might not work for everyone. I already read that Mozilla is aware of the problem and are working on a fix it in the full version of 8( the 8 beta did not fix the problem for me) . But they said this is a good temporary fix at least,( might be permanent)
For me at least ,Firefox works fine in 7 now. perfect actually. And many people i saw on similar forums had similar problems.
Enjoy. Hope this helped -
About every 1 1/2 hours, it automatically shuts down to cool off. Is there any way to manually turn it on? Or, do they have to be replaced?
I tried that with no improvement. I think I might have to have the fans replaced. do you know if this is a particularly difficult procedure? Something wierd that I've noticed is that if I have a video on for more than several minutes, the fans comes on, and also when I am on a Skype video conference for awhile. Otherwise, the fan jst doen't come on as the intels heaten up to the point the the auto shut down kicks in...any advise? This definitely interupts my work! Thanks for your help and input thus far!

My ipad locks up.This happens just about every 24 hours. When it does I power down and up and I am able to run.
If that happened to me, I would restore my iPad. Plug it in to iTunes, let it sync, then click the "Restore" button on the right side.
You won't lose anything. That should help. -
I have a DVD project that takes about 14 hours to generate. Is there any way to periodically save it during encoding so power failures or other problems do not require a complete restart?
No. Are you saving the project as a disk image rather than burning directly to disk from iDVD? If not then that's what I suggest you do. That will separate the encoding process from the burn process to save time and disks if the encoding is bad. It also lets you burn a second or third disk without having to encode again.

Every time I text to my daughter's LG Nitro, she receives a duplicate message about 6 hours later. Does anyone have any idea why?
Sounds like a carrier issue. Contact the carrier.

IMac beeps once every hour (about)
I know there's tons of discussions on iMac & what the beeping sequences mean. I've read many of them & they all pertain mainly to either 3 beeps or beeps upon starting MacBook Pro's.
My iMac I never turn off & it beeps about once every hour, or there abouts. I bought it used (2012) & I have an external Lacie 1TB Porsche Design hard drive for my Time Machine. Nothing different than what I had on my older 2008 iMac.
I don't believe it's a RAM issue but I could be wrong. The system works perfectly no issue's except for the annoying 1 beep every hour (or so).
Could the motherboard be going out or power supply? It's a 2012 so it would be hard for me to believe either would be going out already right? It's possible that one of your login items is causing the problem. Select the Login Items tab in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. Delete any items that you don't recognize.
