My X11 programs won't launch

I have two applications that run under X11: Xephem and Open Office.
About the time I upgraded to OS 10.5.4 I noticed that they wouldn't start. Today I looked at the discussion groups here and upgraded to X11 2.3.1. They still won't launch. Before they would just hang up without giving any error messages, but now when I try to start Xephem I get:
sh: line 0: cd: /usr/local/xephem: No such file or directory
sh: ../bin/xephem: No such file or directory
It sounds like X11 just needs to be pointed to the proper directory, but I don't know how to do that. I never did get the hang of working with the command line.
As for OpenOffice, I get this:
The application soffice.bin quit unexpectedly.
I don't know what to do about that.

Looks like the upgrade might have done something to those application installs. The error you're seeing is from a wrapper script that is used to start Xephem. This script is looking for the actual binaries in a directory located in /usr/local/xephem, which now doesn't seem to exist on your system anymore. Likely it's looking for the "bin" subdirectory in that directory, in which would be the actual application binaries.
In any event, this wrapper script can no longer find these directories. Before trying to do much manual digging to see what happened, I'd just try to reinstall Xephem. That should be a fairly safe thing to try...

I had a kernel panic a hour or two ago while doing a bunch of stuff (compiling pkgsrc bootstrap, running virtual pc, and surfing w/firefox), and now X11.app won't launch. The only error messages I can find are in the console log:

Feh, of course right after posting this, I figured it out.
I had an ssh-agent socket hanging around, apparently that did it.

  • Programs won't launch & finder crashing after recent software updates

Finder and most programs won't launch after a software update. I was able to run Cocktail and repair permissions. I've restarted a few times, and ran disk utility from the start up disk to no avail.
    Any suggestions?

  • Programs won't launch since 10.4.10 upgrade

    Anybody out there?
Since upgrading to 10.4.10, several programs won't launch. MS Word, Disk Utility, Adobe Acrobat, and others. Safari is just plain gone.
I'm no whiz, but I'm not a novice either. My intel-based iMac did not have any system disks when I got it from Apple (don't ask me why).
I would think I could just download a copy of Safari, but all I can find is upgrades and they won't install.
Q: How do I reinstall Safari? How do I get system disks?
    Thanks,
    Flounder

He's already indicated that he solved the problem the same way you did. For both posters, get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before updating. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall everything. Then, peruse these

  • Program won't launch on Mac for one user but will for another

We just installed a new program (that is Java based) that we are about to start using in our office. It is the WorkFlows client from SirsiDynix. It works fine on my MAC but 2 other users in our office have MACs and it won't launch. We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck.  We created another user on one of the computers and installed the program and it launches fine. Both users are Administrators. We have uninstalled and reinstalled the program but still no luck. We have ran the Repair Permissions utility on the HD. Is there a tool or software that we can use to compare permissions or settings of the 2 users to find out why the program won't run under one of them?
We have Mac Mini OS X version 10.9.5
Thanks for any help you can give.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Additional information: I'm using Windows 7. I bought the Student/Teacher version and have registered it with Adobe.

  • Programs won't launch

    Hello,
This problem started a few weeks ago. I tried to open iTunes and it wouldn't launch. I did some troubleshooting with that to no avail. Unfortunately since then, my Firefox and Safari won't launch. I downloaded the OS X Combo Update and I couldn't launch that either. I can't launch Cocktail to help with the Cache. I have read many posts and checked my disk permissions (which seem fine), rebooted from the Install disk, checked for corrupt fonts and removed com.apple.plist files.
I've also checked out http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/multipleappsquit.html and can't get anywhere there either. I am just your average user, don't understand alot of the jargon but am trying to work through this since you all have helped me out so many times before.
It may be a framework or software update glitch? I'm just not sure. I have many crash logs from all different programs if that would help anyone.
I am trying not to reinstall my OS X as the disks I have on hand are 10.1 (is that a big deal?) I also read about bad sectors, my disk drive has been making odd noises lately, could that be it? I just don't know how to pin point one problem. Can anyone help????? Please?

I don't need to transfer any files from the iMac and I don't have a firewire cable to use the iBook to startup.
I just need to figure out how to get these programs to launch. It started with iTunes and went to Firefox and Safari. I tried booting up in Safe Mode and using a different user account, neither of these have worked either. It seems I am going in circles since I am told to try Disk Utility but I can't use that without the Tiger Install cd.
Does anyone have any other ideas? I know this is a pain for people, but below are snippets of the error logs for the failed Itunes and Safari launches. It must have something to do with a software update or font or something screwing up the launch? I can't even launch Cocktail or Combo Update to try to help...
Anyone have any ideas? I saw the thread about the StuffItAVR and even got rid of that all together? Anything else? I appreciate it!

  • All sort of other programs won't launch!!

I just installed Safari 3.1 and am having massive problems with other programs not launching. Actually, they launch for a moment and then close immediately.
Can someone please help. This is a stable program???

I have the same problem. I have used my techtool pro to fix files and optimize, but many programs fail to launch still.

  • Upgrade disaster - Most programs won't launch

Just upgraded to Snow Leopard (unfortunately). Virtually the only program that will launch (besides the Finder) is Safari. The first time that launched, I kept getting multiple WebKitPluginHost quit unexpectedly errors. After a permissions repair, software update (that started after a restart or two) and a few more restarts, those Safari errors are gone.
However, iTunes, Word, Pages, Preview, Text Edit, etc. etc. all bounce a few times and then just stop bouncing or give an unexpectedly quit error. Any suggestions?
I was running an old HP Scanner that required Rosetta to be installed on installation. I've removed that from the login items. I was also running coversutra and removed that from the login items as well. No change. Still have the problem. Otherwise a standard installation.
    Aaaargh. Any suggestions?

Well, at about 3 am last night, I gave up and decided to do an archive and install of 10.5 and then 10.6 (don't get me started about not being able to just do this with 10.6).
This morning, I checked the 10.5 installation and all the applications (can't wait to reinstall all of those...) in the archived "previous systems" section have the "cross-through" logo and say that they can't be run on this "architecture" -- I'm running an Intel aluminum iMac. My wild guess is that somehow, when it asked me to install Rosetta, these programs were reclassified as PPC in some registry somehow? Is that crazy talk?
Have been an Apple fan and promoter for 20 years now. The good will I've built up during that time is about expired today. Apple seems sloppy lately.
Will install 10.6 later. I had to go to work (tired and cranky) so I couldn't finish it up.

  • Some programs won't launch from menu/desktop - XFCE

I've recently installed a few programs for my desktop - mainly Anki, and MDM login manager. They installed fine, and as most programs do - produced a menu app for it. But for some odd reason, no matter if I try to access it by the XFCE menu, or even creating a desktop icon for it; the program will not launch. Nothing happens. On the other hand, if I launch the program through the terminal I have no issues. It's more of an annoyance than it is a huge problem, but if anyone could help me fix this I'd really appreciate it.
As a side note, it's not an issue of logging out and back in as this has been an ongoing problem for about a week of logout's/reboot's/shutdown's, etc. I'm not sure what kind of information you would need to help diaognose this, so if I can provide anything else of use, please let me know.

For Anki - Both .desktop and terminal command is the same. When trying to launch it with run in terminal, it complains of an untrusted application launcher. I have the choice to launch anyways, or mark as executable. After marking it as executable, the terminal appears for a brief second, then disappears with nothing else.
MDM Launcher - The .desktop is different - pkexec /usr/bin/mdmsetup - where I just type mdmsetup in terminal. When clicking to run in terminal, a polkit authentication pops up in the terminal with sudo and asks for permission to run, and my password. After I type it in, it disappears and nothing launches. If I go into a terminal and choose the same as the the .desktop, the authentication pops up, I repeate the process but this time I get this error: "(mdmsetup:3766): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:"

  • X11 app won't launch

    Hello,
I've got version 1.1 of /Applications/Utilities/X11.app installed on my Mac. Just recently, I've found that I cannot launch this application. It jumps once in the doc and then doesn't launch. No error message. Nothing.
I checked the console and found the following entry:
Mar 29 00:28:15 hamlet crashdump[360]: crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/X11.crash.log
    dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.6.dylib
    Referenced from: /Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11
    Reason: image not found
I then checked the entry in the /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/X11.crash.log:

    I checked under /usr/X11R6/lib/ and didn't locate a "libX11.6.dylib".
    Should I re-install?
I'm a recent convert to Tiger. I just upgraded (within the past three months from 10.3.9 to 10.4.5).
    Thanks,
    -Jason

Hmm - I've never seen it - but it looks like something from your X11 package is missing.
I would re-install the X11 package only and try again. You should be able to use the Mac installer (or pacifist utility http://www.charlessoft.com/)

  • CS6 programs won't launch.

I installed the trial version of the Adobe Web and Design CS6.  The installation seemed fine, but when I click on the programs they don't open.  The mouse gets the blue circle icon indicating it's loading, but the program never launches.  I uninstalled, and reinstalled and still have the same issue.  There is no error message either.  I'm using Windows Vista.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • All Adobe Programs Won't Launch

I recently bought a copy of Adobe Master Collection CS6 about 3 months ago and all of a sudden none of my Adobe programs will launch. When I click to open the program it will load for about two seconds then a window will pop up saying amtlib.dll is missing from my computer. I need help and this is urgent! I've tried safe mode and everything but NOTHING works, please help as I am desperate!! I am also running Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit with And Intel i7 3820, 16GB of DDR3 SDRAM, one 1TB HHD and an ATI Radeon 7900 series GPU

Oh and I don't know how to re-install Adobe programs
You simply run the original installer again after running the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool.

  • Programs won't launch from Dock or Applications.

has anyone seen this problem; I click on a program in the dock and the black triangle appears showing it is to launch, but the black triangle flashes two or three tims and then disappears. the program never runs. i am having this problem on one of 9 G4 computers running 10.3.9. it only happens with Safari, Peak Express 4 and install files compressed with stuffit.

If you have updated the software then the original icon in the dock may not work.
    Try this:
    1. Click on the Macintosh HD
    2. Click The Applications Button.
    3. Find the application you wish to open
    4. If the application icon bounces in a different place to normal then Ctrl click on that Icon and choose "keep in dock"
    5. Drag the old icon of the dock on to the desktop, It will go up in a cloud of smoke.

  • Program won't launch into classic, OSX insists it is UNIX executable file.

I am trying to get an older database which runs fine on my older iMac (running 9.2) to launch in classic on my non-Intel Mac-mini running OSX 10.4.6. When I try to launch it, I get an OSX window saying "There is no default application specified to run the document ...". Under "Get Info" the application is called an "UNIX Executable file". How can I get OSX to label this as a Classic application instead of UNIX? All my other classic programs work just fine.
    Mac-Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have had these problems converting files from older computers (OS9) to new Mac Minis (Panther and Tiger) at work and sometimes I get the blank white icon and sometimes the blue unix .exe file icon. I have 2 workarounds that might work for you. The first one is by zipping the file and transfering the zip file to the new machine. The second is using a flashdrive. I have to erase the drive on the Mini (sometimes takes two tries) and then put it in the OS 9 machine and initialize it again there using Mac OS Extended in both machines. After this I can copy the file to the drive and it shows up with the correct icon and file extension so I can open it on the Mini.
I also found out yesterday that although you can't network from a Mini to the iMac, with the latest updates on Tiger you can now drop files into the Dropbox on the Mini after you set permissions. The file I tried this with came up with a blank icon, but it did open in the original app. When we bought our first machine with Tiger they wouldn't connect and Apple phone support told me there was no way to do it, which stopped me from updating two Minis from Panther to Tiger.
