My XP printer no longer works with snow leopard over the network

My XP networked printer (Samsung 4200) no longer works with snow leopard after Mac update.  Printer hooked up to XP and can access it through network.
When I print it requests that I to authenticate the printer with a user name and password but it's not password protected. I don't have a password, but I tried all the usuals anyways.
It worked fine a couple days ago, and I've tried everything since.  I've reset my printers, turned off both computers.  Plugged the printer directly into the Mac - didn't work at first but downloaded a new driver Splix - 2 (Samsung doesn't make an OS X driver for this printer) and got it working.  Reinstalled Bonjour on the PC, which can't even see a printer now.  Any help would be hugely appreciated.
THanks in advance.

Connecting from a Mac to Windows is password protected. If you tried to connect to a shared folder on Windows you would also be prompted to enter your Windows credentials. So when you do print next time, enter your Windows user details and password. If XP has no password then set one - it is bad practise to have a Windows computer without a password. And updates to Mac OS X expect you to have one set in the Windows computer.
If for some reason you don't want to set a password in XP then enable the Guest account and you can use this on the Mac when you get the prompt (either select Guest or type it in).

  • Printing Password NO LONGER WORKS with Snow Leopard!

Ive searched this forum and most people have the opposite problem I do. They want to disable password requests when printing, but I want them!
With Leopard, I was able to set up our networked color printer on every mac and students who logged in with their Active Directory accounts would then try to print but fail because they weren't part of the user group that were allowed to print to our color printer. When the password screen showed up, all I had to do was type in my account name and password, and the student's work would print. This was perfect for our lab set-up so we could supervise printing.
However, with Snow Leopard, this feature no longer works. The password box pops up but it doesnt matter what name/password is inputted, anything will print. By anyone. Yikes. My IT is not too happy and Im trying to find a way to fix this.
I saw Kiraly's tip on using Server Admin tools but it didnt work for us. Error 14071 something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be falling back to Kerberos authentication, where passwords aren't needed every time. I'd suggest telling your IT people to disable kerberos on the Windows Server. If Windows is allowing users to access services with the wrong username and password, then that bug needs to be sent to Windows as a security vulnerability.
Otherwise, if they narrow it down to a problem on the Mac side, tell them to submit a bug to Apple.

  • HP 7400 printer won't work with Snow Leopard.

I recently updated my iMac to Snow Leopard and now I can't print to my HP OfficeJet 7400.  I know the printer works, as I can print from my laptop which is on Windows 7.  Any recommendations to get my iMac with Snow Leopard to print to my 7400?

  • Ichat no longer works with snow leopard

i recently installed Snow Leopard on my macbook pro and ever since, when I try to open iChat, a window opens and says "You can't use this version of the application iChat with this version of Mac OS X. You have iChat 4.0.8. I thought that the new version would have installed with Snow Leopard. What do I need to do?

    Hi,
    Go to the Applications folder.
Do you have two versions of iChat in there ?
If so, Click on to Highlight it.
Use the Apple Key (CMD) and I key together (Get Info)
In the panel that pops up what version number is it ?
What is the version number of the other one ?
If one is iChat 5 and one is iChat 4, drag the current iCon for iChat Off the DOCK and let go. (Puff of Smoke animation)
Drag the iChat 5 icon to the DOCK (It does not move the App just links to it.)
If you only have iChat 4 then post back and let us know as there will be more steps.
Please note the time of my post as I may not reply for some time.

  • HP Scanner No Longer Works with Snow Leopard

    Hi:
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.1). I have an HP DeskJet F4280 All-In-One. It used to work great under 10.5.x, but now it will print fine but not scan.
*If I* launch HP Device Manager, and double-click “Scan Picture”, “HP Scan Pro” window opens, but I get the following error: “Sorry, scanner could not be initialized (Scanner not found.)”.
*If I* press the hardware “Scan” button on the top of the unit itself, the power light blinks rapidly for about 10 seconds, then reverts to its normal state, and nothing else happens.
*If I* launch “Image Capture” 6.0(424) I get this error: “No camera or scanner connected”.
*If I* follow the path, System Preferences>Print & Fax>Scan a window opens that reads “HP Deskjet F4200 series” and I click on “Scanner”, but it says “No scanner selected”.
However, “System Profiler” lists “Deskjet F4200 series” under USB High-Speed Bus, and, as already mentioned, the printer works fine.
Any advice to get my scan function enabled again would be most gratefully appreciated. Thank you!

    Doug,
Looks like HP just came out with new drivers today for this printer and HP Scan Pro is back for this and a few other models.
It is going to be very hard to figure out which ones are going to have the Scan Pro and which ones it will work on.
For me, I can no longer follow HP directions on deleting the Hp Device Manager and Scan Pro according to their document.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01846935&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en &jumpid=regR1002USEN
This is getting far too confusing for me and HP printers...
The Scan Pro for many models still does not work but now some of the new ones do...
Listen the HP Architect as he has the best info. Not even HP's website is as up to date...
Good luck everyone with HP printers...

  • HP Printer Won't Work With Snow Leopard

Hi, I hope you can help. I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard and my HP printer won't print. It is a Laserjet 1015 and new drivers are meant to be on the list with SN. My iMac recognises the printer is there but cannot make a connection. I am networking it using an Airport which is working fine. I have even reset the printer system and deleted the printer and added it again but after starting to process a document to print it just stops.
The other thing is that Pages v 1.0.2 also won't work now. I can open the software, but it can't open any existing documents nor will it open a new blank template. This is my work software (I'm a journalist) so this is a real worry. Any suggestions??
    Thanks so much
    Jo

    Hi JoJoh,
I can't be of much help with the printer but I just checked my "Pages" and my version number is 4.0.2. I'm using iWork 09. Perhaps you need to update? I just checked the "Snow Leopard Compatible" site and found "Apple Pages 4.0.2" is compatible. It didn't mention 1.0.2. I'm so sorry. That's pretty rough when it's how you make your living.
As for the printer, I have an HP Photosmart C4580 which wouldn't print. I finally just deleted all the printers on my MacBook and used my Snow Leopard install disk and selected the "Optional Install" which allowed me to just reinstall the printers. My HP is now working fine. I do feel like this is just a work-around until HP gets things sorted out. I say that because even though my HP now works, the only place it shows up is in my users folder. It's not in my Applications folder, but as long as it works for now, I don't care.
Hope I was of some help to you. Best of luck!

  • HP 8150N Printer still not working with Snow Leopard

I went to the Hewlett Packard page for a new driver and was told the new driver for my printer was included in the Snow Leopard update. I'm sure it is, but my computer can't find the printer. I've used advice from other discussions and tried what I could with the "Print & Fax" feature on my computer, but so far, nothing works. The printer to a network with two other computers in my office. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I believe this to be a "generic" statement since the support agent did not know what your problem was. I have double checked, and there are no known issues with the driver for the 8150n (at least none that engineering has been informed of and is working on).
I fully believe the problem you are experiencing is due to the lack of AppleTalk in Snow Leopard.
First print out the IP address of your printer by printing the configuration page. You may also be able to get this information on the front panel if you dig.
Second, open up the print and fax control panel and click the + button to add a printer. In the add printer window that opens, select the IP button at the top, choose the protocol of HP JetDirect - Socket, and then type the IP address of the printer. If the OS automatically selects the right printer driver (and not Generic PostScript) you are good to go. Click Add Printer and happy printing.
If it doesn't auto select the right printer then your printer probably does not have an IP address that is routable from the Mac. The easiest way to get the printer to grab a new IP address is to cold reset it. Cold Reset the printer by powering it down and then powering it back up while holding down the GO button.
This should force the printer to grab a new IP address. Follow the above steps again to add the printer, and away you'll go.
One drawback of this method is if you have a network that keeps changing and a DHCP server that doesn't reserve IP addresses for devices it is possible that the printer at some point in the future updates its IP address and is no longer reachable. If this happens, simply repeat the steps and you'll be all set. The other alternative is to assign a static IP address to your printer, but that takes a bit more work.
    Just trying to help.

  • QuicktimeMPEG2 plug-in no longer working with Snow Leopard

I have been using the QuicktimeMPEG2 plug-in for many years. However upon my finally upgrading to Snow Leopard earlier this year I've lost that functionality. The Quicktime Player no longer recognises the plug-in although I dutifully kept a copy of the QuicktimeMPEG2.component file from the Leopard installation, and reinstalled this into the 'system/library/Quicktime' folder.
I've also tried re-installing it from the original purchased DMG container but the installer produces an error indicating "A newer version of this software already exists on this disk.". This latter exercise undertaken after I had removed the manually installed QuicktimeMPEG2.component file.
The version title of the plug-in file I have is:
    "QuickTimeMPEG2.qtx 6.4 Copyright Apple Computer, Inc. 1989-2003"
Though I note the file 'kind' is titled "Component (PowerPC)".
Can anyone advise what might the cause of my problem?

Seems to me that there was an issue like this when Apple came out with the new QuickTime Player v10 which is in your Applications folder and the default quicktime player program on your system.
There might be another version - Quicktime Player 7 in your Applications/Utilities folder for compatibility with older plugins, etc. You could try launching it and see if your plugin works in that version.

  • No longer works with Snow Leopard?

I just bought Keynote a little over two weeks ago, which I am running on my Snow Leopard-equipped iMac. I planned on buying Pages today, but due to the update, it now requires Lion.
I can understand that a bleeding-edge application might be restricted to 10.7, but it seems a bit ridiculous that such a basic utilitarian program would only be allowed to work on the very most recent OS.
Is there any way of getting the previous version at all?

I am also facing this situation with a 2007 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini that is running OS 10.7.4 Lion, which is not upgradable to Mountain Lion because it requires 64 bit processsing, while the Mini is limited to 32 bit. Why is Pages suddenly crippled? I've never seen anything like this. Somehow, Pages was upgraded to 4.2 and now it no longer runs even though I have upgraded to your last latest OS before Mountain Lion. What gives, Apple? I've spent thousands on your products over the years, from an Apple IIgs, IIci, Mac 6100, 7100, iMac, and on through my two iPad and five iPhones. We customers deserve an explanation, not the silent treatment. Fix this.

  • Printer won't work with Snow Leopard

    Hello,
I have been using a Lexmark colour printer with my iMac. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and since then my printer does not work. Does anyone have a solution to this as I don't really want to buy another printer, especially as I have bought a new stock or print cartridges for the printer.
Many thanks to anyone who can help.
    Kind regard, Maggi

    Hello Maggi:
This is a list of OS X supported printer drivers:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#lexmark
Since you did not indicate your specific printer model, I cannot make further suggestions.
If your printer is not listed, some people have had success with generic Gutenberg drivers.

  • Network Accounts used on Lion computers no longer work with Snow Leopard computers.

I am having issues with my network users who have once used a computer with Lion on it joined to the network then going to use a Snow Leopard workstation and Google Chrome and Safari crash randomly either at the first 30 seconds or typing a space or backspace character.

  • A fix for screensavers that don't work with Snow Leopard?

is there a fix for the screensavers that no longer work with Snow Leopard? some of the developers have came out with new versions, but a few of them have been abandoned by their authors. Is there a way to run those screensavers in 32 bit mode?

Is there a way to run those screensavers in 32 bit mode?
Not without action by the original authors, sorry.
I know it doesn't help right now, but like all other OSs in the past, these types of things need to catch up since the bar has been raised once again...give it time and there will tons of entertaining s'savers out to pick from.

  • How to make Canon printers work with Snow Leopard

Can anyone explain simple language (I'm not technical which is why I chose Apple) how I can get my Canon MP 980 printer/scanner to work with Snow Leopard.
Everything used to work perfectly and I'm beginning to regret the upgrade to Snow Leopard (what other suprises are waiting for me when I'm in a hurry?).
I have other Canon printers in various locations (MP 600, MP 530 and iP90). Will I have similar problems with all of them and, if so, is there a simple way to resolve the issues across the board?
I checked the Canon web-site but was totally confused
    Any help truly appreciated.

According to Apples website; they should work. Please see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#canon
The driver version should be: 10.26.1.0 (or greater)
The above article was modified in December 15th 2009
If after installing the most-up-to-date driver, via the link provided, the issue persists, reset the printing system.
    How-to reset the printing system:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/14001.html
Then install the printing driver supplied by Canon on Apples website here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/CanonPrinter_Drivers_for_Mac_OS_X_v106
If that still does not work, reset the printing system again. Now go to Canon's website and get the driver(s) for mac there.
Canon's website for driver download for the PIXMA MP980:
    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDet ailTabAct&fcategoryid=334&modelid=17357
There is the possibility the drivers on canon's website could be newer than apples. The version numbers, size of file to download, and release date all appear to be quite different.
On *apples website*, the driver info stats:
    * Version: 2.2
    * Post Date: November 16, 2009
    * Download ID: DL899
    * File Size: 274.59MB

+I do not own the same printer+, however I would suggest installing some of or all of the following 3 drivers.
    If your printing via USB:
MP980 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.26.2.0 (Mac OS X 10.5/10.6)
If your printing via a Networked Printer:
MP980 series MP Driver Ver.1.0 for Network (Mac OS X 10.6)
If your going to use the scanner:
MP980 series Scanner Driver Ver. 14.8.2 (Mac OS X 10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6)
If you scroll down further, past the 'drivers', that same website from Canon also includes step-by-step guides/manuals for setting up the printer/scanner, both via USB & WiFi.
If the steps above did not resolve the issue, please respond back.
    Good Luck!

This problem is not unheard of when upgrading from Snow Leopard. It is usually solved by completely deleting the existing printer in System Preferences > Print & Scan, and adding it again.
