My Zen Xtra keeps resetti

Hi, this is very annoying, and before anyone says anything, yes I have read the FAQs and I really don't understand technical jargon one bit.
Everytime I move the player, it seems to reset. I bought this last week to go on holiday with (I leave on Tuesday) and it's been giving me so much grief.
I hope this can be cleared up.
Thanks.

This sounds like a battery compartment problem I've occasionally seen on GameBoy Advance SP, which uses a similar compartment and Li-ion battery. Take out the battery and tug a little on the terminals on the player so they poke out a tad further. Wipe those terminals and the flat ones on the battery itself with a dry Q-tip. Put the battery back and test it.
As for the "plastic thing" around the battery, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. The little clear plastic strip under the battery in the compartment is a strap; you'll find it quite helpful in removing the battery. The white shrink-stuff with printing around the battery itself is just a label and shouldn't be removed. The black plastic you can see at either end of the battery is the shell, and also shouldn't be removed. As long as you don't still have the battery in the little baggie it came in and nothing's blocking the terminals, it's OK.

• Zen Xtra Keeps Going Wrong!

Hi there,
I've had my Zen Xtra 30gb for around 3 years now and recently it froze and was just stuck paused on a track, so I did the hard reset/format on it, and it seems to be fine for around a month. Yesterday I turned it on again and it shows the welcome screen then resets itself and makes a funny noise, like the hard dri've is getting stuck or something. It repeats this process until I take the battery out. Is it broken? I could probably reset again and it would work but I need something more reliable
Thanks,
sad_muso

Sounds as though your hard-dri've is on it's way out - you could try re-formatting the hard-dri've as this will mark any bad sectors on the hard-dri've as unusable or fix a corrupt file system, but if the hard-dri've is about to give up then a re-format could be the final nail in the coffin. I'd also check to make sure that it's not caused by a corrupt music file - does this only happen on certain music files? If so, they could be corrupt and that's why they are crashing your player. Try re-ripping them and see if that makes a difference.

• Jukebox Zen Xtra keeps switching itself

Have got a 30GB Jukebox Zen Xtra (had it since Christmas)...
Everything is fine, except it keeps turning itself on and then playing until I notice it or the battery dies.
I always make sure I have turned it off properly, and the first time it happened I thought that something had pressed on the on/off button accidentally. This was not the case though. Recently, it has been doing it when the player is sat on a flat surface with nothing touching it.
It's getting annoying, as it often plays through the night (when I'm in bed) and when I come to use it on the train in the morning, there's no battery left
Anyone else experienced this or know how to stop it's
Any help appreciated
Thanks

• Zen Xtra keeps freezing up on any track

Ok. I Did the clean up option, format and updated the firmware. I put a album on the machine. Tried track 4, it freezed up. Couldnt move up or down on the album list. The only way i could move up or down is by resetting the machine. Then i went back, tried track 8, it freezed up as well.
What is the problem?

• Zen Xtra Reset Lo

I've had my Zen Xtra 30gb for over .5 years. That means I don't have warranty or email support anymore.
My player has started to act crazy. Sometimes, without any warning, it just restarts. After that, it gets to the EAX screen, but then restarts again. Then, again to the EAX screen and restart. It does this for like 5 minutes if I don't take the battery off. If I leave the battery in, after 5 minutes it either says "Low Battery" (Even if over /2 is left) or just shuts down. Then, it either does the loop a couple of times, or starts normally. If I take the battery off, and don't restart it in about 30 minutes, it starts normally. However if I take it off and put it back in and restart before 30 minutes has passed it just goes to the loop again.
I suspect it's the battery, because when I take it off when it is on loop and put the batterycharger in, it starts normally. I found only one match to this problem with search. Zoinbergs told that he found a way to fix this same issue by taking off the battery, puttin the charger in, waiting till the HDD stops spinning and then putting the battery back in. I tried that, many times, but it still does it. I don't know if it was just a coincidence, but I was able to run the player until the battery was almost depleted before it started the loop at the first time I used that method.
I had this problem only couple times last year, but this year it started to get very common, and now it happens virtually every time I use it over 5 minutes. And there appears to be no reason why it does it. But usually, or always, it happens when it has started to play a new song, after like 4-2 seconds. So the HDD is still spinning when it restarts. But it's not caused by shocks or anything like that, usually it happens in my pocket when nothing touches it and I'm standing still. However I tried to put paper into the hole with the battery to make sure it doesn't move.
Format and firmware update are all that's left. I haven't ever updated my firmware, and I don't see why this would be related to it. And I wouldn't like to update, since they say the original firmware can't be reverted back. But if you think I should update it, which one should I get? There are two, the newer one has lots of unnecessary features, and it says it will decrease my HDD capacity (I only use /2 though), but it says I wouldn't need drivers to transfer data. Does that older firmware have that feature too, altghou it's not listed?

=Zen+Xtra&Product_ID=9288&modelnumber=&driverlang= 033&OS=0&drivertype=0&Image4.x=34&Image4.y=5
And I have depleted the battery completely and then charged it fully over night many times. It plays a song that's 4:0, 28kbps/s CBR over 4 hours (I tested it before the loop started to happen almost every time), so the battery's play time is ok. I've also done the Clean-Up.Message Edited by DBDX on 03-24-200607:45 PM

Whoa, that's confusing. But it might be the battery, because it works fine with the charger.
You said you tried with two batteries, did you wait like 5 minutes before that? Because in the loop, I can't even get to the recovery screen. And reset doesn't help, I forgot to mention.
Also, my battery plays as always, 4 hours. So if the battery has degraded, it affects only the loop?
I tried the disk clean-up once, but it still did the loop. And the firmware is still the standard one that came with the player, propably the very first firmware ever.
Today, I was skiing (real skiing, not downhill) and the loop started. I was at the exactly same location than exactly a week ago when the loop started back then. That's scary. The battery had less juice, I wasn't going as fast as last time, and it was a lot warmer too, I can't understand why it did it at the same time as last week.
For the buying, it's pretty hard for me to get one. I li've in Finland, and the only way I can get one is by ordering from the Creative's store, it's 47USD + shipping. Pretty expensi've.
But I've thought, can Zen Micro's batteries be used with Zen Xtra? Creative sells them separately, and they are a little thinner. My friend has two, if it's safe I could test with one of them. It says on the battery that it should not be used in a another player.
The bigger one is Xtra's

And thanks for the replies, I thought I was alone here.
A new thing, I can propably get it fixed, but I found it really strange: I deleted one data folder on my player through Nomad Explorer (latest version), and it kept coming back. I deleted it, quit the window, went back and it was there again. I tried to overwrite it, no use.Message Edited by DBDX on 03-29-200609:07 PM

• Strategies to keep the Zen Xtra cover from popping o

OK - I had heard that the Zen Xtra cover pops off easy before I bought it and thought it couldn't be all that bad
But it seems like all I have to do is touch my player sometimes and the cover pops off
I put a piece of tape on the latch on the bottom so I couldn't jostle it just as soon as I got it and saw what a hair trigger it was - but it seems like sometimes I just pick it up (maybe squeezing the sides a bit) and the cover pops off?
My refurbished Zen Xtra didn't come with a case - maybe that helps prevent the cover from popping?
Any other strategies or fixes from folks who have dealt with this irritating feature? (Sound quality wise I'm VERY happy with it... but I can see where this might continue to be a major annoyance over time)

• Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60gp prob

Well, to start off with, I loved my mp3 player. So far, I ran into problems that I could not fix. I downloaded all of the updates that were needed. My mp3 player, a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60gb, suddenly would not work the same way. When the power adapter of battery are inserted, the player starts up. When they are pulled the player shuts down. One of the problems is when the player is on, it doesn't want to leave the main screen that says, "EAX". The hard dri've is not spinning, and no data is being accessed. I found on this website a page that tells users how to reset their mp3 player. For my mp3 player, it must be turned off for me to do a hard disk check, re-installation of operating system, or a format of the hard dri've...which is another problem, because I cannot turn it off. As I stated previously, the player is either on or off depending on if the battery is in or not. I am totally puzzeled. I cannot connect the player to the computer because of this problem. So either I have a new 60gb laptop hard dri've, or I figure out a way to get this to work. I haven't been able to find any threads like this or any users experiencing these problems.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
-Matt

Ok... I think I figured it out. I finally got into the recovery mode. I let the battery sit out of the mp3 player for a while, hoping that there is a capacitor that would run out of power. I put the battery back in and got into recovery mode. I ran disk clean up. Nothing changed. I had the same problem I first started off with. So I took the battery out again for an hour. Came back, and got back into recovery mode. I reinstalled the OS. Everything seems to be working fine.
I hope that anyone having a similar problem with this mp3 player can keep this in the back of their mind if they cannot get into recovery mode due to a boot up and shut down problem.

• Zen Xtra not recognized by USB p

When i hook up my zen Xtra (60gb) nothing is recognized by the usb port. it did work, before i downloaded the new driver, and now it doesn't see anything on the port. i tried a different usb port but it still doesn't see anything. any suggestions?

Tried a disk cleanup on the player? To run a Disk Cleanup you need to access the Rescue Mode. To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu. Note: Disk cleanup should not remove your tracks. It searches through the disk for files and rebuilds the index, and can be useful for correcting any strange behaviour.
Alternati'vely, if the new drivers broke it have you tried installing the drivers from the CD?

• Nomad Zen Xtra prob

Well, I just emailed support again but overlooked the (faster?) forums until now. Maybe someone can help me out... ------- EMAIL SENT -------- Hi, I emailed the customer support a while ago and got a generic reply as how to reset my mp3 player's OS. *This is not a software problem, it is a hardware problem... I want to send my Nomad Zen Xtra in to Creative to get it fixed and I will pay for the repairs.* Here is an original copy of the message: Hello, about a year ago I purchased my Creative Nomad Zen Xtra. Only a couple months into using it, I dropped the MP3 player on the headphone jack where my headphones were plugged in and the sound stopped working correctly. I think maybe that the soldering that is keeping the headphone jack on the circuit board is messed up or disconnected. Some sound does come out of one earphone when I wiggle the plug around a bit. How much do you think this would cost me? The player is no longer under its one year warranty, either. Thanks in advance. - Steve ----- Originally answered by Technical Support, Creative Labs Americas ----- Thanks, Steve-oMessage Edited by Jeremy-CL on 0-2-2005 0:08 AM

I?ve posted it before, but here we go again:
Two or three months after buying my 40GB zen xtra, the same thing happened to me. I deduced it was a battery problem and prepared myself to expand U$29 on a new one (I li've in Rio and it would be impossible for me to send it back for warranty). While I was looking for the new battery, I kept using it in my job and at home, with the power cord hooked up. I did it some times and one day, without any apearent reason, it started to charge the battery and ever since it never happened again. I friend of mine mentioned that these Li-Ion batteries can have this kind of problem. By that time, he suggested some charging manouveres to recover it but it was no needed. What I suggest you is to keep trying to charge it. You may be as lucky as me!

• Zen xtra battery adv

I was havving problems with my zen xtra, whenever it had been on for about 20min without being on charge it would switch off then keep resetting constantly. The only way of stopping it was to remove the battery. Anyway, I thought it might be a problem with the battery so bought a new one on ebay for a tenner and the problem is now fixed.
Just thought Id point out the problem incase it happens to anyone else. Also the new battery lasts soo much longer than the old one did before it completely went, well worth a tenner.

That constant resetting is typically down to a flat battery.

• Zen Xtra Library Rebuild Prob

When ever my Zen Xtra is connected to a power source, regardless of whether or not I've turned it on, it goes into the Rebuilding Library screen. I've attempted to put the player into the Rescue mode and it doesn't do so, I hold down Reset and Play for quite some time and nothing happens except that the screen goes blank as soon as I hit Reset. This is greatly irritating. Also, it seems that whenever I upload a significant portion of music onto the player a day or two later it will have serious difficulty of some kind. If anyone has dealt with the same problem or has a solution please help.

You enter rescue mode by keeping play held down then pressing reset just once, continue to keep play held down. If it won't enter rescue mode then the player is faulty and you need to contact Creative Support, links for which are in the FAQ post.

• Trouble Transferring Data Files From Zen Xtra to Computer...HELP

Hello to all technical-savvy people out there in computer land, I'm hoping you can help me somehow, as I am frustrated beyond belief.
I have a Creative Nomad Jukebox, Zen Xtra, 30 GB. I used it for, obviously, listening to MP3's while I was out of the country in Australia, and I also used it to store data...all of my digital pictures and videos. When I got back to Chicago, I was able to download all the drivers and software onto my dad's computer from online, and was able to successfully transfer everything from my Zen Xtra onto the computer.
I am now at my mom's, and trying to do the exact same thing to her PC and to her laptop....neither of them want to cooperate with me. The computer recognizes the device, and can recognize the data, but it is unable to transfer the information from the device to the computer. I have done the following:
Downloaded the drivers/software
Restarted the computer (plenty of times)
Rebooted the Zen Xtra
Firmware upgrade
And I still can't transfer. I want to show my mom the pictures desperately, and it's realllly frustrating me. If anyone can help me out, my email is ]
Thank you,
Sheryl

If it worked with the exact same drivers/software on one PC but not another, this suggests a USB incompatibility (especially as you've tried a firmware upgrade). It's not clear whether this is Creative's drivers and/or certain USB chipsets, but issues do seem to exist for some people with certain combinations of hardware.
Out of interest, have you tried a disk cleanup? To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu. Note: Disk cleanup should not remove your tracks. It searches through the disk for files and rebuilds the index, and can be useful for correcting any strange behaviour.
