MySQL fix or reinstall?

Hello,
I'm running Tiger server (10.4.7) and I thought I'd try setting php and mySQL and playing around with them for a bit. I got php running, I installed phpMyAdmin, no troubles. I started up mySQL using mySQL Manager. Where my troubles began was after I set the root password. Online, it still told me that the database was insecure. I checked the grant tables, and found two types of users, root and another. Being new to this (and stupid) I deleted the root user with no password, reasoning that perhaps that was why it was still non-secure.
Well, now I don't have permission to get in to the database anymore. I've tried many things, up to and including installing mySQL 5, uninstalling it, checking my.cnf, all to no avail. The only thing I've managed to do, it seems, is remove the mysql.user database, because that no longer shows up.
sigh I've been working on this all day, and I'm stumped. Can anyone please tell me:
1. How to reset the grant tables when I can't seem to get in, even as root-with-password?
2. What might have happened to the mysql.user database, and how can I get it back?
3. Failing either of those, is there a way to uninstall mySQL and reinstall it to its base configuration?
Thanks in advance.

1. In this case, MySQL works the same on OS X as on
any other platform. You can start MySQL while
skipping the grant tables altogether. You can find
step-by-step instructions on that here.
This talks about stopping and starting mysqld - I can't find mysqld. I've done a "locate mysqld" and I've only turned up mysqld_safe, in /usr/bin/. I tried starting that according to the instructions on the link (--skip-grant-tables, etc), but it just says "starting" and never returns me to the command prompt.
2. I'm not sure what happened to your mysql.user
table. <SNIP> You can confirm its existence by viewing
/var/mysql/mysql and seeing if the user table data is
in there. If so, then the problem is just a matter of
getting to it.
And if it isn't? I don't believe I deleted it, and I hadn't even gotten as far as making queries, but it's not there.
Installing MySQL 5, or any other version for
that matter, installs a second copy into
/usr/local/mysql
I did realize that eventually. Does that mean that the mySQL Manager in the GUI is useless once mySQL is upgraded to mySQL 5, and I should just forget about it? (Not that it seemed to be terribly helpful anyway, but I'm wondering.)
To use it
with PHP, you need to make sure the MySQL socket file
location and PHP's value for MySQL's socket file
location match.
Yes, I was getting an error when I tried this. It kept trying to find mysql.sock, which wasn't there.
Searching this forum or searching
Apple support for "MySQL socket" will turn up
relevant articles.
I will do that - if I install mysql 5, will it install another mysql.user table as part of the installation? Are the grant tables separate from the ones installed as part of Tiger Server?
Still floundering, but I appreciate your assistance!

  • Pages VERY slow to load since downloading Firefox 6.0. How do I fix or reinstall old version please!

Since I downloaded the latest version - 6.0 of Firefox, I am having serious slowness of page loads. Nothing has changed in my PC or Network configuration and in the past have had very fast loading of everything - even streaming of videos, etc. The only thing I found in your help about all pages loading slowly was something about a proxy add ons issue - but I don't have that enabled. It seems to be even worst when I am submitting a form -

Is that the answer to everything. How about a real fix. Pages refuse to load. If you hit the stop loading page button and then hit refresh, the page will load. If you don't the page will try to load forever. I left a page for over a hour and it never did load. If Firefox releases one more update like this I'm done. I tried to go back to Firefox 5.0, but now whatever they did to screw up 6.0 is doing the same to 5.0. I tried deleting Firefox and starting over with a fresh install for both, but still just garbage. Also, the whole time I've been typing this another page in another tab as been trying to load. Is Firefox updating without testing this stuff because there is a security problem? Rats!

  • 19 working fine, downloaded 20 - it crashes frequently, hogs memory, runs scripts and slows down internet. I don't want a fix, just reinstall 19

FF 19 was working fine. Downloaded 20 and within 5 mins. it crashed. Script running problems again and it slows down my internet connection tremendously. I don't want to fix it, I want to go back to FF 19 but can't find it - it doesn't exist Running XP SP 3. If I can't go back to FF 19, then I'll just remove it and stick with Chrome. I like the old private browser in FF 19 better. I run 20 - 40 tabs open at a time and the way the new Private browser works with the existing window open just uses more memory Thanks!

  • ITunes crashing on Macbook fixed by reinstalling QT

We just solved the iTunes crash problem on a MacBook by testing QuickTime, which is linked with iTunes performance. When launched, QT crashed as well, so we reinstalled QT and we're now up and running - no more problems. Hope this helps someone.

When iTunes malfunctions, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • MySQL doesn't start after upgrade to 10.6.8

After installing the 10.6.8 upgrade on my Mac Mini Server (first using Software Update, then again after manually downloading and running the update), MySQL doesn't start.  Well, it seems it starts alright, but then immediately quits.  From the mysql log:
    110626 21:18:46  mysqld started
110626 21:18:46 [ERROR] Error message file '/usr/share/mysql/english/errmsg.sys' had only 480 error messages,
but it should contain at least 481 error messages.
Check that the above file is the right version for this program!
    110626 21:18:46 [ERROR] Aborting
Since I need MySQL to run my Apache server, Apache doesn't start either.  Which means all of my sites on that box are now down.
Suggestions for fixing on the MySQL site suggest reinstalling MySQL 5.0.92.  But I'm hesitant to do so.
Other suggestions are reinstalling 10.6.X from scratch, upgrading until 10.6.7 and then restore from Time Machine from the last backup before the upgrade.  Not looking forward to that either.
Does anybody have some other suggestions?
    Elizabeth Mattijsen

The usual trigger is a skewed version between the files here, though that would be unexpected.  (Similar errors have cropped up on rare occasions with previous Mac OS X Server releases; something went off the rails here.)
First, make a backup of the file or (better) boot the DVD and make a backup of the whole disk.  That's your path back if something goes wrong here.
Try re-downloading and re-loading the 10.6.8 combo update (the combo update, and not the delta update), as a potential brute-force fix.
Failing that, I'd then look to fetch a copy of the same-version kit from the MySQL server (as what is running on 10.6.8 server), and extract this specific file from the MySQL kit, and try replacing (just) that file.

  • How do you fix msvcirt.dll error in Premiere Elements 8

The software will not load, no matter what I do, I have tried all kinds of fixes. Reinstalled and uninstalled. I am desparate.

    electricbean55
My drill questions for Premiere Elements 8 users
    1. Are you running the program as the 8.0.1 Update?
    2. Do you have the automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalyzer features turned OFF?
    3. Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed?
    4. Are you running the program from a User Account with Administrative Privileges?
Assuming Yes to all of the above....
Is this a "worked before but now" or "it never worked" issue?
What computer operating system (including 32 or 64 bit system) are you running Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 on?
Is you video card drive up to date?  Assuming that at one time you got into Edit Menu/Preferences/General, how did you set Enable GPU Playback, On or Off?
What happens if you bypass the Welcome Screen for the opening? Same message?
(To do that, you would right click the desktop icon for the program, select Properties, select Open File Location. That should take you to Adobe Premiere Elements 8.0.exe. Right next to that file is another named Adobe Premiere Elements.exe. Make a desktop shortcut for the latter file and use that desktop shortcut to open Premiere Elements thereafter.)
Please confirm that clicking OK to the message never lets you continue into the program.
    Please review.
We will be watching for your follow up.
    Thanks.

  • I plugged my ipod touch into my laptop and started to down load an (1) upgrade.  But Itunes says that the upgrade will take two hours.  I started the down load and it started and stoped and eventualy never complerted the down load.  How can I fix this ?

I plugged my Ipod touch into my Dell laptop and went to Itunes.  Itunes told me I should down load an upgrade, so I did.  Itunes said the down load would take two hours.  I started the down load, but after two + hours (&longer) , after several starts and stops the down load never completed.
I recently got a (fake anti virus) virus and it damaged my computer.  I got it fixed and reinstalled the software and it appears to be working correctly. Could this be the part of the problem ?
Would it help if I reloaded the Itunes (off an external HD) or downloaded it again from Itunes ?
    Thanks

I doubt it.  For my updates, it has typically taken me many tries/retries.  Like for you, the download would stop.  and I would have to restart from the beginning.  If you get a network timed out error try disabling the security software on your computer.

  • Help! After interrupting an installation of a program downloaded from the internet on my mac in a reboot cycle will not start, I've already done the disk check and it's ok and I reinstalled the OS 10.8 Lion

After interrupting an installation of a program downloaded from the internet on my mac in a reboot cycle will not start, I've already done the disk check and it's ok and I reinstalled the OS 10.8 Lion

In this case, I think that there's something damaged that can't be fixed just reinstalling OS X.
If you don't want to lose files, you will have to create a second partition in the hard drive and install OS X there, so you will be able to recover everything you need. Then, you will have to erase the first partition and reinstall OS X. Follow these steps:
    1. Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. You can follow the steps of this site to create a second partition > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
    3. After creating the second partition, close Disk Utility and install OS X on the second partition.
    4. When the installation finishes, open Finder and, in the sidebar, you will see the other partition. Open it and recover the files you need.
    5. After doing that, repeat the step 1.
    6. Select “Macintosh HD” in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    7. Close Disk Utility and install OS X on the first partition.
After doing all of these steps (you will need a lot of time to do this), you can delete the second partition you created and add the size of this partition into the first one > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU4.html

  • Problems Reinstalling OS X Maverick, amongst other issues...

    Hello everyone,
I am having all sorts of problems with my MacBook Pro 13 inch (bought in Nov. 2012). I plugged in a USB cable connected to a smartphone and it immediately shut off the computer and would not turn back on. The power cord LED did not light up when plugged into the computer. To finally get the computer to boot, I had to remove the cables next to the RAM as a sort-of reset. That worked and everything was ok for maybe an hour or so, but then the computer froze. When I tried to boot it up again, it took me to the light grey screen with the Apple and the spinning wheel with a progress bar. The computer would not boot before the progress bar could finish; it shut down at every try. Now I am in rebooting in safe mode, attempting to fix the HD through Disk Utility. I repaired the drive and it came back that everything was fine. The "Repair Permissions" was greyed out, though I read that it's suggested to repair the permissions as well.
My next attempted fix is reinstalling OS X. I get all the way until it begins the installation process and immediately it says "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again." Now by the fifth time, I'm done trying again.
The only thing I can think now is that I have to replace the HD. What do you guys think? By the way, can I replace the HD myself or does it have to be done through Apple? The closest Apple store is 8 hours away in Panamá and it seems that they WAY over charge for everything.
Thanks for your valuable input and advice!
    Mary Beth

    Mary Beth,
if you don’t need the files which are currently on your internal disk, you could try booting into Recovery mode (by holding down ⌘R as your MacBook Pro starts up) and run Disk Utility there to completely erase your internal disk, then exit Disk Utility and shut down from the Apple menu. When you restart it after that, OS X Internet Recovery will download and reïnstall your MacBook Pro’s factory-installed version of OS X. If that succeeds, then you shouldn’t need to purchase a new hard disk.
If you’d prefer to replace the hard disk, then you could do it yourself; if you have a non-Retina model, you’d only need a Philips #00 screwdriver (to remove the screws on the bottom of the case; there are three different types of screws used, so keep track of which screw goes in which hole) and a T6 Torx screwdriver (to remove the screws in the hard disk which keep it in place in the disk bay, and put them into the new disk). If you have a 13-inch Late 2012 Retina model, then you might need a different set of tools, and the new disk would need to be a mini-SATA SSD instead of a SATA disk; I haven’t tried replacing the disk in Retina models, but ifixit.com probably has a page of instructions (and a list of recommended tools) for that model which would help.

  • Creative Cloud won't reinstall.

Hello, I am running OSX 10.7.5 on an iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 w/ 16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory.
I have been using Creative Cloud for a few months now, primarily Premiere Pro, After Effects and Media Encoder.  It has been working great up until this past week when I've been trying to finalize a project.  The issues began when I was attempting to re-render a timeline I had adjusted a few things on, and I started getting time outs/crashes of Premiere when attempting to render, even though I had previously rendered the same timeline with the same filters, just with different parameters (nothing in the parameters created drastically new images or anything like that, same basic images just small tweaks).  Then I attempted to simply export the timeline and kept getting the same results, time out/crash of Premiere.  I tried many things, exporting to a different drive, cleaning cache, deleting old render & preview files, repairing disk permissions, renaming the project, creating a new timeline, etc.  NOTHING WORKED.  It got to the point where I couldn't even get Premiere to open.  So I uninstalled, and to be safe I uninstalled all of CC because at that point Media Encoder wouldn't even open either.
When going into the folders for the separate programs I had installed, I saw the uninstall icon available so I figured that was the way to do it, go in and uninstall each program there.  I realize I should have searched for instructions on proper uinstiallation because I wasn't aware of the Adobe Install Application in Utilities until just now.   That folder is now empty after my uninstall.  Regardless, before knowing about that faster method, I went into each program folder and uninstalled individually, including the Adobe CC Desktop app.  I also used the Creative Cloud Cleaner app and it told me everything was good.  I restarted the comp, even reset p-ram and then went to re-install.
The first couple times I attempted to install the CC Desktop app, I got as far as the Installer status bar, but both times it stalled out at the "Installer Initializing" message and never goes anywhere from there.  I just now attempted again and nothing happens at all when I double click the installer icon.
I've been trying to speak with the Adobe "chat representatives" all day but keep hitting a dead end when they attempt to connect me to technical support chat but no one ever answers on that end.  I've also found out that even though I'm paying a not-small amount of money for this software, phone support is only available on weekdays during business hours?!  My first experience with Adobe's customer service has been quite disheartening to say the least and I really need to reinstall the software ASAP so I can finish this project.  Can't believe I put so much faith in this troublesome software, might have to make the jump back to FCP7.

  • Trouble with MySQL/PHP5... Need Help!

I uncommented the PHP line in Apache. Apache is running sites in Sites folder. PHP pages are running on Apache server.
MySQL5 will not work. The system preferences add-on is not functional. The GUI services to turn on and off MySQL causes errors, and can not properly turn on and off the database. In Dreamweaver CS3, every time I try to connect a PHP page to the local MySQL database, the program gives me either warnings that it can't find a right file in the right place, and then crashes.... or after much trying to fix it, that it can't connect through the socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock'(2). I simply removed MySQL from the hard drive all together.
Server is running and working. PHP appears to be working.
Any help setting up a development environment with APACHE/PHP5/MySQL5 would be much appreciated... I'm at a loss at this point. I set this up so easily on Tiger, and now I can't get it to work.

    Hi There,
To get MySQL working on Leopard do this, until MySQL fixes their PrefPane and a few other things.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5645748&#5645748
    sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/safe_mysqld
close Terminal, then open it again and put in these two...
    sudo mkdir /var/mysql/
    sudo ln -s /tmp/mysql.sock /var/mysql/mysql.sock
    Restart Apache
To get PHP working (Apple's Version) un-comment the line the PHP line in your conf file.
    private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf
If your using Marc Liyanage package, you and rest of us will have to wait until he updates it. If you don't need all the extensions (GD, MCrypt, Etc..) then use Apple's version, its latest release of PHP. Otherwise, we all have to wait until Marc updates PHP installer. Hope this helps.

That is some kind of permissions problem. Are you signed on as an admin of the PC?
A quick google turned up this:
    Solution:
In most cases, this problem is fixed by reinstalling the Microsoft Windows Installer. However, because viral infections have been known to cause damage to these files, it is important to scan your computer for common infections.
So you might want to head off to support.microsoft.com and find out how to fix the Microsoft Windows Installer.
