MySQL & JSF driven Web Application

I have the whole database, written in SQLyog. I already have a huge GUI application that works with this database.
I didn't use Hibernate for object mapping, all the SQL statements I wrote manualy.
I want to make a small web aplication that will read the same data from the database and display it in the
web browser, possibly, using JSF, my faces ect.
Anyone have any clue where is a good place to begin with it?
Thank you

For future JSF related questions, here is the JSF forum: [http://forums.sun.com/forum.jspa?forumID=427].
If you're new to JSF, I recommend to read the JSF specification first, it explains why JSF is there and what it all can. Then read some documentation/tutorials/books about it.

  • Exposing a Form-Driven Web Application within a Portlet

    Hi All,
    I'm having a bit of a problem exposing a form-driven Web-Application within a portlet window.
The web-application I'm working with utilizes the Oracle XSQL servlet and is basically a collection of .XSQL pages which are formatted using .XSL stylesheets that produce output HTML for the client.
The application contains hyperlinks for navigation, but is largely Form driven.
The application has already been deployed into an Oracle Application Server 10g container as a J2EE object(.ear file), and is fully functional and accessible over the web.
In order to expose this application thru a Portlet window I utilized the Url-based provider services that come with the Oracle PDK. This allowed me to set up a simple URL-based provider for the site without any coding whatsoever. I also included inline rendering declarations to force the application response to be rendered within the Portlet window.
This setup works fine when only hyperlinks are used to navigate thru the application, however, Forms do not appear to work with this setup. Everytime a form is submitted, the data is posted to the Portlet which fails to pass it thru to the underlying web application. Instead the Action="somepage.xsql" parameter is appended to the URL of the Portal itself thus returning a "page not found",etc... error.
After much OTN searching I have found that the PDK 10.1.2 URL services package does not support Forms for inline rendering. Thus this solution comes close but falls short of what I need.
I was wondering if anyone can point me to a solution that would:
    1) allow me to display the entire web application within a Portlet window (app only outputs HTML & some client-side javascript, but takes POST requests to the XSQL Servlet)
    2) without modifying it's current Form-driven interface, or any of the application's underlying code for that matter,
    3) and without having to resort to java coding the Portlet interface.
The URL-Based Provider setup is almost perfect, I just need to find a way to allow forms to pass thru to the underlying application so that it's response can be rendered correctly.
    Current Setup:
Oracle Application Server (Portal & Wireless) 10.1.2g
    J2EE with OC4J_containers.
    Oracle XSQL Servlet (ver 10)
    Windows 2000 OS

I tried that, the default "Base URL" provides the "Display Option" attribute but only gives me these 2 options:
    - Full browse window link
    - New browser window link
I have also tried other items that use "Base URL" (Simple URL, UrlItem, URL) and are all the same thing. The only items I could find (relevant to this need) and provide the option "Item displayed in page area" were:
    - "Page link" item
    - "External Application" portlet
I even created a fresh Instant Portal to recreate the defaults and add the URL item again, but nothing :(

  • Rich Internet / Data driven Web App 's  -  Which sdk and Plugins Please???

Hi, I am starting Bournemouth University in September and will be learning java, I have wanted to build rich internet applications for years and am really excited!!
I would like help understanding all the different products and plugins relevant to building rich internet data driven web applications so I can install them all to my system and then follow all the online videos and tutorials.
I have knowledge of html, css, some sql, some flash and can use photoshop and fireworks.
So far, I love the look of the net beans console and the first thing I want to find out is how to make the screens/panels/components unique from a graphical point of view; like you can in adobe flash or Flex. I tried to install java FX but had errors (?64 bit system related)
Also would like to know if anyone else new has the same goal as me so we can set up a group or a web site dedicated to forming a learning path, like making a list of url's of which tutorials to do in which order to best learn the basics before connecting to databases and then learning mvc frameworks for enterprise level multi user applications.
In that respect actually, is Java SE ok for my goals or should I have installed Java EE; I think I tried to install EE version first but had options in the installer I didnt understand or errors; did it a couple of weeks ago and cant remember exactly what the issue was? Can you upgrade from one java sdk to another without effecting netbeans??
Thanks all in advance, I hope some people will help me get started and in return I will dedicate part of my web site im about to build for uni to putting all the information gathered in one place for others.
My system is windows 7, 64bit
    I have installed Java sdk - jdk-6u25-windows-x64
    Apache Tomcat 7.0.11
GlassFish Server open source edition 3.1
    Netbeans IDE 7.0
    MySql Server 5.5
    MySql Workbench 5.2CE
I also have mssql installed as I started learning this from an interactive dvd, but am assuming Oracle is the db of choice now oracle bought java. Or mySql which i installed but have never used before.

First of all, stop treating this like its an Adobe product. There are no plugins okay? You have entered a very different world of development right now, one you may find you don't even like. But lets not be hasty.
Secondly, remove everything you have installed right now.
Okay, now you're ready to start. Now Install the Java 6 JDK AND NOTHING ELSE. It has no executable to start any fancy program, just a bunch of command line tools with which you are going to enter the wonderful and difficult world of Java programming. Pick a favorite text editor (preferably one that has syntax highlighting for Java sources) and get going. I suggest you start here:
    http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/
This will not tell you how to build web applications; this will tell you how to create Java programs using the tools that are part of the JDK. You should not be even thinking about doing any web development at all until you are intimately familiar with the language, the tools, the standard API and programming in general. That may take as little as three months, probably more given your limited experience in the realm of application programming.
Only once you have found your way should you make an attempt to install Netbeans again and start to learn how to use that to make your life a little easier. Before Netbeans can help you help yourself, you really have to know what you are doing.
I wish you good luck. Its good that you are excited, but I hope that excitement has not been built on top of bad assumptions and woefully inappropriate expectations. Programming is hard, application development is even harder.

  • Applying Linux Group Ideology to Web Applications

I have built a database driven web application that has a user and group system that works in a similiar way that Linux handles user access.
    Breif explanation:
A user can access various resources, the resources are assigned to a single group and users can have many groups.
    Users
    id name
    1 RedRanger
    2 GreenRanger
    3 BlueRanger
    Group Assignment
    user group
    1 33
    1 44
    1 55
    2 33
    2 44
    3 33
    3 44
    3 55
    3 66
    Group description
    gid name
    33 user
    44 things
    55 stuff
    66 foo
    Resource
    name group
    a 33
    b 33
    c 33
    x 44
    y 55
    z 66
    RedRanger can access a, b, c, x and y but not z
    GreenRanger can only access a, b, c and x
    BlueRanger can access a, b, c, x, y and z
Lets say that RedRanger needs to be denied access to resource a
if I remove him from group 33 he can no longer access b or c which is no good.
The only alternative is to change a's group and add everyone else to the new group, this isn't so bad for 3 users, but what about 3,000?
If this situation occurs often there will soon be a mess of groups.
What is the best approach to this problem?
    Thanks!

OK, I'll admit that I know next to nothing about databases. Really -- I've never make or administered one in my life, either for fun or in school. But in response to your question: make a mess of groups. Why make resource a, b, and c all available to group 33?
    Instead of this:
    name group
    a 33
    b 33
    c 33
    x 44
    y 55
    z 66
    Have this:
    name group
    a 11
    b 22
    c 33
    x 44
    y 55
    z 66
Here's my reasoning: if your permissions/group setup does not reflect the fact that you have three different types of system resources, then why have three different sets of resources at all? In other words, if groups govern access to all system/database resources, then groups _are_ system resources. Groups should closely mirror the existence of those resources.
As an example, think about how linux allows access to to system resources. Instead of creating a single "system resources" group, there's a group for access to audio devices, a group for video (access to hardware acceleration), one for samba shares, one for ssh, one for ssh-certs, one for mail, and so on. Yes, that's a mess of groups, but that's the price you pay for fine-grained control over what users do.

  • Ll / seeking FREE open source JSP / JSF Web application Tomcat/5.5.15

    hi all,
We have a need to set-up a web site for a community based (non profit organisation) football / soccer) club.
The web hosting machine is based on JSP / JSF running on Apache Tomcat/5.5.15 & Sun Microsystems Inc. VM 1.5.0_06-b05.
    OS is Windows 2003 V 5.2
The database backend is based on MySQL, mysql-essential-5.0.18-win32.
We need to add content related to:
    a) Players contact details;
    b) Teams;
    c) Match reports;
    d) News;
    ... and other dynamic content
We are looking for an out-of-the box FREE open source Web application we can deploy on the web hosting machine.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Trajano

I haven't tried ICEFaces or JBoss seam or Apache MyFaces, so I can't really compare them.
ICEFaces appears to be a nice framework/tool from looking at their site, even though it's open source I think one has to pay for support, you might want to take that into consideration while making your decision.
Apache MyFaces, is fully community driven - so you get free support from the community.
I don't know about JBoss seam.

  • Can not connect Fusion Web Application with MySQL database

Hello to everybody, I have installed jDeveloper since 3 days ago and I am still not able to run a simple web application just to try! I have worked previously with Eclipse and NetBeans but none of them had sooo much errors related to everything. I pasted the JDBC driver everywhere in the jdeveloper folders, to JDK and JRE. To be clear, I created a Fusion Web Application, created an AppModule, tested the conncection with the database and it was fine, created a simple jsf page and added one DataView from the AppModuleDataControl to the jsf file. Everything is ok and when I want to run the jsf file I receive this error:

I pasted the JDBC driver everywhere in the jdeveloper folders, to JDK and JRE.
The MySQL Connector Java JAR files are not found in the runtime class of the web application as indicated by the error message java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError, msg=com/mysql/jdbc/DatabaseMetaData

Swing is GUI library for use in desktop applications.
JSF is a web application framework which runs on an application server and is accessed by clients via web browsers.
To fully understand what you have done, try accessing your application from a different machine than the server.
To answer your question, don't invoke System.exit() if you would like the process to continue. But that is the least of your problems.

  • Does any body have any design patterns of JSF Web Application Developping?

Can any one answer me some questions?
#1.I am an amatuar of people who develop Web Application. For some reason,We choose the JSF to develop our item.through some introduction,I know the UI component of JSF is resided in Server side,is it right?but I am a little confused that:if there are many users who are exploring our jsf website.(to simplify my question, image I had just one web page and just one button)How many UI components(buttons) will be there? How it(they?) works?
#2.Does any body have the success experience (for example design pattern)to develop web applications?if We just concern about the Add,Delete,Modify,Query operations of some data.
I just do my job according to my feeling.
I will give every page a pagebean(backing bean),and I am not sure how to combine the business data with the pagebean.some one suggested that I should use delegate pattern to separate my business log and page logic. But I am still confused by following things:
#2.1 does JSF have the same ability to help us construct the model dialog just like swing to
help us control the operation flow?
#2.2 If there is not,Does the following way work?I put every tabledata's property as corresponed component.if user choosed the row in the table,My Listener will syncronize the row data to the components. But
#2.2.1 if JSF has the components according to the web users' number, how can My Listener tell which component should be update?Should I maintain the map?
#2.2.2 If the problem I imaged above is false,Does any body can tell me how to custom      the ListDataModel,so I can use it like Swing?because now I can just use some view data to insert into ListDataModel, but after some selection operation,my business object must be find according to the selected data,it is not an interesting job!
I am waiting for your advice!

Ok I'll try to explain Step by step please correct me if I make any mistake because I have not played much with shared variables.
To create a shared variable to an RT target go to the target if tou have already otherwise add an RT target by right clicking the Project>>Add targets and Devices
Then in the target Right clikc and select the variable as shown below.
Then once the Shared variable settings window opens Enter a variable name and then Select the type "Network Published"
In the right side you can select the data type for the shared variable and even you can choose your custome controls.
After selecting the data type go for the Network and select buffering if required else leave it if you are planning to use the variable just for display purpose.
Then you can enable the RT FIFO if required (Not able to explain how it works and why it is used).
Then after completing the Shared variable setup you can access the variable in the VI in both the Host and the RT.
You can bind the variable to a control so that if any data from the RT is coming you can read the data from that control.
Once you have placed your shared variable in the BD you can change the access typr to read or write depending on your need.
This might not explain the complete shared variable concept but I believe that this would defenelty give you a kick off to start using the shared variable. Please correct or add more comments if anybody know better.
    Good luck.
The best solution is the one you find it by yourself

  • Creating a JSF Web application from scratch.

    hi,
i have created a JSF web application, but not from scratch i had to use a jsf example included in the final specification of the JSF download, as a template to create my own application, by deleting and editing the example files with my own.
i tried to do it from scratch including all the settings, parameters and files that should be in place, but i sill get an error when starting the app in tomcat.
Unfortunately i dont have the error listing anymore since i have got around the problem through alternate path. however i do remember that it came with cannot find FacesServlet, or something to do with the FacesServlet.
if anyone could shed some light on this it would be really great because it so frustrating.
    many thanks.
    dharam

cannot find FacesServlet, or something to do with the FacesServlet. It might appear not because you have a wrong project structure, but because you point to the entry jsp file directly without using the servlet mapping in your URL. Check this first.

  • Call a JSF application from a Standar Web application (JSP)

    Hi all,
We have 2 aplication, one is JSF and the other one is standar web jsp.
We want to invoke from the standard web application to the JSF application and pass param from the jsp to the *.jsf page.
    how can I do that?
    Thanks.

You can open a jsf page from any other application.
    <form action="http://hostip:port/app/MyPage.jsf?key1=value1&key1=value1">
as we do in any other jsp page.
Now in JSF application, in MyPage.jsf write a scriptlet to get the parameters and from there you can use these params.
You can get a managed Bean reference in your jsp page. Here is the code for that.(ResultsInExcelBean is my managed bean.)
    FacesContext fc = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
         ResultsInExcelBean resultsInExcelBean = (ResultsInExcelBean)fc.getApplication().createValueBinding("#{ResultsInExcelBean}").getValue(fc);
    Hope this helps you.

  • Jsf web application has to be restarted everytime a broken pipe exception

    Hi,
My jsf web application using tomcat is experiencing a sql exception "java.sql.SQLException: System or internal error java.net.SocketException: Broken pipe" when it tries to connect to database.
Everytime this exception happens I have to restart the application and the application runs fine then.
Is there a way to handle this exception that we don't have to restart the application.

    It depends....
How do you have (where) the connection, how you obtain them, etc?
