Myst III on 10.4.6

does anyone know where I can find instructions on how to install Myst III on 10.4.6?
I know the UBI website says you need an OS9 partition and there appears to be several patches.
My problem is I cannot get Myst III to load at all.

I think it is a chicken and egg problem. When I first installed Myst III, I was still booting into Mac OS 9, so I was able to install it without issue. Then I applied the patch on top of what was already there on a system which had both 9 and X since I never erase and installed. The patch installed without incident. Later when I got Myst IV, it came with a Myst III CD that included the Mac OS X full application. That's why I'm suggesting contacting Ubisoft, especially if your Mac is not one that can boot Mac OS 9.
If yours is one that can boot Mac OS 9, then I would make sure the next time you erase and install, to install the Mac OS 9 drivers, if you didn't originally, and then install Mac OS X. The driver installation is covered here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75275
That way you'll be able to boot into Mac OS 9 and install the original Myst III, and then install the patch when you are in X. To find out if your Mac will boot into Mac OS 9, see my FAQ:

  • Myst III Exile "output volume" error?

I have a Macbook running the most current version of OS X 10.4, and I am trying to reinstall Myst III to replay it. To install Myst III, you have to copy over all of the installation files onto the desktop first. Unfortunately, it is constantly giving me this error after I copy all of the necessary files onto my harddrive and try to run the program:
    Error
Unable to obtain default output volume # -2004
I have copied over all these files, which are what the readme instructs me to copy:
    'Data' folder
    language.m3u
    'M3Data' folder
    manual.pdf
    Readme Mac
Myst III: Exile for Mac OS X
Why is it constantly giving me this error? I cannot find any other examples of this problem on the Apple forums.

I guess I should specify that my disc is the DVD version.
Everything that article suggests I have tried, including moving the folder from my desktop to the Application folder, then to the harddrive and Documents folder, but I get this same error everytime. I have also tried it with the DVD in and out but I keep getting this exact same error.

  • Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition

I bought this game on Amazon.com and it didn't give me any system requirements except "Macintosh." It turns out that this game is only compatible with Mac OS 8.1/9.1 (except for Myst III: Exile). I love this game; how can I play it on Leopard?

I'm almost 100% sure there is no way to run classic (OS 9) in Leopard. Apple has removed that functionality. If you have an Intel Mac I'm pretty sure there is no way you could play it, period. Unless of course you find an OS 9 emulator that is Intel compatible (Sheepshaver maybe?).
It's going to be a pain (or perhaps even impossible), no matter how you slice it.

  • How to add an OS 9.1 partition

I am a huge MYST fan and hate that I can no longer play the game. I did find, however that I can play Myst III if I create an OS 9.1 partition. I don't know how to do that.
    I'm on a G5 using OS 10.5.6
    Thank you.

you can't boot OS 9 on a G5. what you can do is make a partition and install Tiger on it. then install classic in tiger and run classic games from tiger.

  • Is Rosetta still part of Mac OSX post Leopard?

The reason I ask is that I have a number of PPC only games (Myst games mostly) that I understand will only run on my Intel iMac (Mac OS 10.5.2) under Rosetta.
    Thank you

FYI, you'll want to copy over your existing installs of all games if possible. Don't try to reinstall them onto the Intel machine. (Unfortunately, the Myst III installer is still OS 9 only.)
    Here are the patches:
    Myst III: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/demos_updates/mystiiiexile.html
    Myst IV: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/demos_updates/mystivrevelation.html
Myst V: Should install and run fine.
If you're unable to copy over your Myst III installation, some brave soul online has figured out how to install the files manually, though I haven't tried his method myself:

  • PM 6500/300 to Intel iMac in one leap

I hope to jump from a PowerMac 6500/300 (OS 9.1)to a new iMac soon. I'm also borrowing my Mum's eMac (OS 10.3.9) as well at the moment and have them both LANned together via a Netgear 614 v2 Router.
What concerns me is will I still be able to play software like Riven and Myst III Exile after I upgrade? These programme work fine on the PM and the eMac right now.

Hmm. Since Classic software is pretty much everything I have, it sounds like I'm going to have to either get hold of a PowerMac version of iMac (or G5) before they are all gone - or get a PC (Hisss!). The latter is most likely though seeing as most of my numerous game software titles are PC/Mac and PowerMacs may no longer be available. This is a shame because I like my Macs.
PCs are now dual core intel processors too I notice.

  • Finder slideshow controls not centered anymore

    Hi,
As you all know it's possible to start a slideshow by selecting a number of photos in the finder, contorl-click and select "slideshow" from the menu.
While the slide show is playing you can get a set of controls to appear by moving the mouse.
These controls used to appear in the middle of the screen, but after installing 10.4.8 (I believe it was then) the controls appear more to the right of the screen.
This happens on the 18" Compaq LCD-screen I have attached to my PPC Mini, while on the screen of my MacBook the controls still appear in the centre of the screen.
I have not tried the MacBook with an external screen.
I installed the combo update (PPC and Intel respectively) on each machine.
Have anyone of you seen this behaviour?
I am thinking maybe it would fix itself if I throw away some .plist file on the Mini, but I am not sure which one (or which ones) might affect this....
    Regards,
    J-son

I tried turning off parental controls for the kid's account, and the behavior is the same: clicking on the game in the applications folder causes the app icon to bounce once and disappear. Other recently installed games (Riven X, Myst III) work as before. Game works fine in my account and guest.

  • Open GL use with old game

I've got Myst III: Exile that I'd like to play on my MacBook Pro. However, when after I've performed all the necessary steps to run it. I double-click on Myst III Exile for Mac OS X and get a window to select a rendering option. Now I chose Open GL and unchecked the Optimized Cinematic Playback feature (since my MacBook processor is faster than 400 MHz), then clicked OK. I get "Error: Unable to locate JPEG frame ID # 100". I'm not sure if this means the game is incompatible with my OS or I need to install an upgraded version of Open GL. I went to Apple's Open GL website, but I couldn't find where there was an Open GL upgrade (if its even needed). Anyone have any ideas?

some one i know suggested that I try an older driver in case it was a bug with the latest one. I did so and once again It worked untill i closed photoshop. I closed and reopened the program to test it and sure enough when i reopened it all open gl functionality was gone once again. I don't believe nvidia drivers are the problem because i have tried 3 different version with the same results. each one works untill i close photoshop and the second time i open photoshop it quits working.
do any of you at adobe have any idea what might be causing this?

  • Turning off one processor with CHUD tools

So I need to turn off one processor on my MBP running leopard 10.5.4 to solve a sound problem with Myst III Exile. When I switch to just one processor in the processor preference pane the computer slows down, which is normal, but what doesn't seem normal is that there are processing spikes that happen every 5 seconds or so. The computer seems to freeze during these spikes. I'm not running anything out of the ordinary. I have my linotype font explorer running, transmission torrent client running and thats it. Once I turn the second processor on again the computer functions normally with no spikes. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for stating the obvious, does anyone have any intelligent suggestions rather than casual observations?

  • 640x480 to 1024x768 without stretch on Widescreen

Thought I would pass along this information. I installed XP Pro on my iMac for the purpose of playing old Mac games that no longer run on the Mac. Since the games are Windows hybrids, I can play them full speed under Windows. Ironic, isn't it?
Anyway, games such as Riven, Myst III, and Myst IV all want non-widescreen resolutions. Windows will play in 640x480 to 1024x768, but the standard drivers stretch the screen out of proportion. Ruins the gameplay. After doing some searching, I found the solution.
I have an iMac (Early 2008) with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics. I went to ATI/AMD's website and you can download drivers for Bootcamp Windows XP. I downloaded the ATI Catalyst Control software. You need to update Windows to include .Net 2.0 Passport or later. You can do that with Windows Update by installing the .Net 3.5 combined updater. After that is done, then you can install the ATI Catalyst software.
Right click on the Desktop and you can open the Catalyst software. Click the Notebook Display Setting in the left column, and you have an option to Preserve Aspect Ratio. Check that option and click on Apply. Now when the game switches to 640x480 or other standard resolution, the aspect ratio will be preserved and the screen won't stretch to fill. Now you can play those old games in their true aspect ratio.
It is great fun playing Riven: The Sequel to Myst on DVD once again, especially since the old Mac requirements were PowerPC and Mac OS 8! The game plays great under XP Pro SP3 too. Now all my old software that no longer runs on the Mac (hybrid discs of course), can be used under Windows.
If you have an Intel Mac with graphics, such as NVidia, you should check their website to see if they offer similar software to give you more control over the resolutions. The ATI software that I refer to only applies to Intel Macs with ATI Graphics.

Shane - Its not squeezed. It just looks 4:3 in the Canvas.
I have DV-NTSC Anamorphic as my sequence. Is that correct?
Also, when I check the ANAMORPHIC box in the sequence setting it does make it fullscreen but when I drop the next clip it does not take effect.

  • How to Find Interest in an Old Mac

I have an issue that is probably fairly common these days, but have found no good approach; looking for some advice here.
Some time ago my stepson gave me an old desktop PPC G3 (the first PPC model as far as I know; has the original ROM). I upgraded it "to the max," as follows:
PowerLogic 1 GHz CPU (set to 934 MHz)
    768 MB RAM
    ATI Radeon 7000 graphics card
    ATA 66 PCI card
Two Western Digital 80 GB hard drives
    Apple A1048 ADB keyboard
    Kensington Orbit trackball
    Keyspan USB PCI card
    Running Mac OS 9.2.2
The thing is, there is a LOT of software on this machine that is now obsolete like Microsoft Office 98, etc. which I purchased some years ago, and many really "good old" video games which are playable on this computer without the original CD-ROMs. To sell or give away the computer as is would probably be considered engaging in piracy. On the other hand, if it is stripped to just the OS, most of its usability would go essentially to zero, and make the computer undesirable. The system runs beautifully on all its software as is... what should I do? No room left at my house for this working setup plus another I intend to buy. My choices seem to be, in order of preference:
    1) Give it away (as is) to someone who really likes the old games (like Myst Masterpiece, Riven, Myst III: Exile, Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time, Obsidian, Starhip Titanic, The Dig, Traitors Gate, etc). Preferably to someone I know...
    2) Attempt to sell it on eBay (stripped down to the OS?)
    3) Give it to the Goodwill or Salvation Army where it would essentially be scrap.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks for your advice!

I see nothing wrong with your #1 choice.
Re #2, you can include all the software currently on the machine, games etc. as well as OS.
    Re #3, ditto.
In all cases, to remain legit there can be only one copy of each software - either with the machine, or not on the machine and not with it (i.e., original disks but not installed).
If you do not have any need of the old software, or a machine which can run it, it would make sense to include it with the old G3 when you transfer it.
Note that any software which originally came with the machine as part of an officially bundeled set of software (included in the price of the machine), that software (and its disks) should always remain with the machine. Ditto the original OS.

  • Turning off a processor

Hey, I'm new, and incredibly annoyed.
I'd like to play a game (Myst III: Exile), but in order for it to work properly I have to turn off a CPU. I know that there is a panel that can be downloaded from a disk that comes with the computer, but I never got any such disk.
After looking around for a while, I figured I could download CHUD, which seemed to be what i needed.........Look, I'm not a programmer, and I haven't the foggiest as to what I should do with that stuff. I just want to play a game. Can anyone, in plain english, tell me how to disable a CPU without having the developer tools from the disk that never came with my computer?
Thanks so much for any help.

Here's what I came up with in a 10-second google search:
    http://myst.mjharper.de/page22/page22.html
Some of that looks dangerous and for pretty advanced users; be careful.
Did you buy your Mac used? If so, the seller should have included the system discs. If you bought it new in a box, the discs were in the box. If you don't have them, you can call Apple and, after giving them your serial number and perhaps paying a small fee, they will ship you replacements.

  • Are there any new adventure games like Myst ?

I dearly loved Myst and regret that there is no version compatible with later Mac operating systems like Tiger and Leopard. Does anyone know of newer similar adventure games I can play on my Mac Mini running 10.4.11?
    Thanks!
    Joyce Ware

Myst III, IV, V are all Mac compatible.
Riven there is a new beta here for Mac OS X:
    http://www.devklog.net/rivenx/
Realmyst is a newer release of the original Myst that is available for Mac OS X.
The Mac Mini has too slow a GPU to run Riven X. You need an iMac minimum for Riven X. The Mac Mini unfortunately has a shared VRAM GPU. Same is true of the MacBook. The iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac Pro are the only Macs with full ATI and/or nVidia GPUs.

  • Myst, Riven, and Exile

I loved Myst when it first came out but never found time to play any of the sequels.
QUESTION: Are any of the Myst games compatible with my cool new iMac? I've read a lot about problems with Myst IV and V (Revelation, and End of Ages)...but what about I, II, and III (Myst, Riven, and Exile)? Can I get the Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition to work on this 'mazin' machine I've just fallen in love with or do I have to buy a Windows copy and play it on the old dinosaur?
iMac G5 intel 20" Mac OS X (10.4.6) "Mac newbie at the controls :O" Intuos 6"x8"

Hmmm....I just checked out the "Downloads" section of the Apple site and there's a section that talks about how to use "Classic" programs in OS X "Tiger".
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/classic/
Has anyone tried this? Would this make the 10th Anniversary DVD Edition work on my cool new iMac? Would it run smoothly?
I'm really hoping this would work and not cause other problems in my system. I don't want to crash the computer just for a couple games...even if they are amazingly great games like Myst!

  • Can i install sata III hard drive?

Hi, i've an iMac G5 20" iSight with an intel core duo 2ghz. I would like to know if  i can install a sata III hard drive like 128GB Crucial m4 2.5" SSD.
    Thx a lot.

First, you do not have an iMac G5. G5s are PPC machines, but yours is an Intel model.
You can install a SATA III drive but I would not spend the money since your model only supports SATA I or SATA II depending on which model you have. I would also be careful about using Crucial SSDs because they may not all work in a Mac. I would get your SSD at OWC instead. You will find their equivalent product for SATA I or SATA II here. I have two of these drives, and they are excellent.
