Myst V: End of Ages crashes on 128MB VRAM!

Hi all!
I got Myst V as a present and installed it this weekend. The game keeps crashing, I still hear the sound as if the game was proceding normally but my cursor is frozen, I have no access to the desktop, keyboard shortcuts to Force Quit do not work and I have to shut down the iMac G5 the hard way, i.e. holding down the Startup button till it shuts down.
I have posted in the Ubisoft forums and it seems it affects only ATI graphics cards, Macs with nVidia cards do not seem to be concerned too much by this problem. The solution offered so far is to take off antialiasing and a setting called anistropic filtering for gameplay which takes away a lot of the magic because the game looks crappy. And seriously? I see people in that thread trying to play the game on dual G5 Power Macs and have the same problem I encounter! And I can't believe that my graphics card, the ATI X600 XT with 128MG VRAM can't play this non-action game at better settings!
Ubisoft resends the elevator to Apple, saying that Apple writes its own drivers for the graphics cards that are installed in Macs so it doesn't look like a patch from Ubi is in the works.
I have heard about ATIccelerator II, a hack for overclocking ATI graphics cards but I don't want to install it as I am afraid it would void my warranty if something were to go wrong.
Would anyone have another solution? Is this true that Apple is the one that should update the ATI drivers? Or should Ubisoft do something about this situation? I really don't know where to go on this one...
Thank you for your input.
20" iSight iMac G5 - 1.5GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I'm confident it isn't a RAM problem either, but the reason I mention this is that I added RAM to my iBook except that I never could complete the OS X install to a Firewire hard drive. I ran the extended hardware test (the RAM passed the TechTools test) and it found a problem. My dealer replaced the RAM with another and all is well. So just because the RAM is recognized and works doesn't mean there is some part of it that is faulty and causing an otherwise untraceable problem.
I'm using the default settings for Myst 5. I understand that lots of Mac users are having problems with Myst but why aren't other Mac users having the same problems?
Have you tried creating a new User account and running the game from that user?
Here's what in the Myst 5 install Read Me:
3.6. Mac Known Problems
- It is very important to upgrade your Mac OSX version to OS X 10.2.8 or 10.3.5. Some important fixes have been made in Mac OSX that will upgrade the overall quality of the game and prevent some random crashes.
- OSX users with Java 1.3.1 or older will need to upgrade to Java 1.4 in order to install the game. Use the Software Update feature found on the Mac to get the latest updates.
- This application will not work properly on Mac's with the Intel Processor (or maybe very slowly via Rosetta).
- There are minor graphic problems with the nVidia GeForce MX and ATI Radeon under Mac OS 10.2.8.

How do I make a disc image from Myst V End of Ages so I can prevent wearing out my CD/DVD optical drive and preserve the original game disc?
Myst V End of Ages has a copy protection installed. This protection is "very" robust and simply will not allow the legal owner of the disc run the software program from a disc image through the use of standard normal means of disc imaging.
This places the original disc at risk of being worn out and places unnecessary wear on the optical drive.
All previous versions of Myst allowed disc imaging.
By copyright law the legal owner of copyrighted material has the right to produce one working archive copy of intellectual property for personal private use and or library. Problem is, so many have abused this right that theft became a major problem for UbiSoft so copy protection was employed.
Without purchasing or utilizing some form of illegal piracy software or method, Myst V simply will not allow itself to be copied and always demands that the program be booted with the original disc in the optical drive.
Since the software is out of production, the legal owner needs a means to preserve the original disc.
After numerous attempts and numerous failures I figured out how to make the program run from a disc image without the need for anything but Apple system software. All perfectly legal.
It is so simple it almost hurts to define it.
    1. Make a disc image from the original disc.
    2. Mount the disc image.
    3. Put the original disc in the optical drive while the disc image is still mounted. (two Myst V images will be on the desktop)
    4. Launch Myst V.
    5. Eject the original disc from the optical drive.
    That's It!
Myst V will NOT launch with the disc image. It will only launch with the original disc in the optical drive.
Myst will continue to run with only the disc image mounted even if the optical disc is ejected.
You CANNOT use the disc image to make a working copy by any legal means that I am aware of but you can now preserve your original disc with minimal use and avoid wear and tear on your optical drive.
The game only requires that the program be launched with the original disc in the optical drive. It does not require that the original disc remain in the optical drive during use.

    Good info.
I have a complex flight sim, X-Plane, that does it a little easier. Launch, wait until everything loads, then eject the DVD. Like the Myst series, it helps to have a big hard drive. The folder contain X-Plane, its aircraft, airport and navaid databases, plus the geography of the entire world, needs nearly 7GB of hard drive real estate.

  • Myst V: End Of Ages Freezing Problem Solved

I could not play Myst V after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.8 or 9. Video would stop on a still frame, while audio continued on. Apparently the latest versions of the Mac OS have reverted to an earlier version of the ATI ROM Extender file, which is located in System/Library/Extensions/AppleNDRV. The version of that file supplied with 10.4.8 and 10.4.9 is 1.2.2f2. I found a later version, 1.2.7f2 on my TechTool e-Drive partition, which is running Mac OS X 10.4.6 (IIRC). Replacing that file has allowed me to play Myst V again. There is still a little stumbling in the video during Yeesha's monologue at the beginning of the game, but it recovers itself without freezing the computer.
Hope this helps anyone with Myst V problems.
    PowerMac Dual 2.7 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   May 2005 Build

Some time after I wrote the above "tip," thinking it was the solution, my computer froze once again. As a result, I downgraded to 10.4 with its bundled ATI software version 1.4, and tested again. Same problem... cursor freeze at random spots in the game. So, one iteration at a time, I upgraded the Mac OS X (along with its supplied ATI bundles), testing Myst V with each one. And every one, all the way to 10.4.9 with its ATI bundle v1.4.18, had the same problem. The ATI ROM Extender really did not help, although the game did pick that configuration to work for the longest time, not freezing until well into the Age of Taghira.
I have since added 1 GB of RAM (no help either), and have also played with the Activity Monitor, killing all the processes that would stay dead before starting the game. No help.
Incidentally, somewhere in the updating of the Mac OS and its ATI graphics software, the ATI ROM Extender disappeared. I am thinking it may be supplied with ATI's software for retail cards, which was another thing I tried installing. But I have only the Apple-supplied ATI 9650 graphics, which apparently doesn't require the ROM Extender. At least, the game works about as well without it as with it.
Sorry if I have misled anyone. I'm still working the problem. I have found that the "Default" Video Options chosen by the Myst V program for my computer may be too optimistic. I have found that by moving the "Anti-aliasing" and/or the "Anisotropic filtering" sliders to the left, that the frequency of freezes is reduced, but not eliminated.
The puzzle remains: Why did it work a year ago on this computer but not now? Perhaps dust on the graphics circuitry is causing it to run hotter? Any ideas out there?

  • Myst V End of Ages Intel Patch Problem

The intel patch for the game doesn't seem to work properly. Once the installer is created and the DVD ejected it shows:
    AppleScript Error
The Command exited with a non-zero status. (1)
Even when you click ok it continues "Patching Installer" without actually doing anything (I had it for about 1 and a half hour running). Can anyone help?

The Patch has been removed from both the Ubisoft Support site and Apple Games Demos & Updates site! Let's hope for a real Universal Binary patch!

  • 128MB VRAM OR 256MB VRAM?

Currently i have a mbp cd with 256vram.This weekend ,i am going to buy a new mbp c2d.Which one should i get the $ 1999 model with 128mb vram or the $ 2499 model with 256mb vram?. I have an extra gig of ram so, in both models i`ll have 2gb memory so what do you guys think? Would you spend $ 500 for an extra 128mb vram?
    Cheers

well I dunno, you tell me. you should check the docs of all your video software and see what they have to say about required or prefered specs for video cards and the amount of video RAM. also, go to the FCP, motion, DVD studio pro forums and ask people there what their experiences are about it all.. personally, I wouldn't know because video is not my thing.
still, my instincts tell me it's probably a no-brainer.. you should just get the best video card with the most video RAM available, because you are working in video..

  • Performance of Aperture on a Mac Book Pro with 128Mb VRAM

Hello, until now I'm running Aperture on a MacBook (the white one, with the Intel 950 integrated graphic chip) with 2Gb of RAM. It works slow, very slow as soon as I begun to use loupe or apply transforms. Also, the fans run full speed after one or two minutes of use.
After seeing Aperture on a 20" iMac I have seen that all the video related work is faster, so I'm no on the verge of selling the MacBook and purchasing a MacBookPro 15" with 128Mb VRAM (the cheaper one, you know).
Will be 128Mb VRAM enough for Aperture?. Yes, yes I know 256 will be better, but muy budget don't allow to go for it, better 2Gb of RAM. The minimun requeriments for Aperture is 64Mb VRAM and it works (slow, but works) without dedicated GPU.
Are anybody ussing this MBP with Aperture?
    Best regards,
    Rafa

I can't quite give you an apples to apples comparison, only an apples to oranges comparison. My images are from various cameras, and the largest megapixel count is 11MP.
I switched from a PowerBook 17" 1.67GHz / 1GB RAM/ 128MB VRAM (ATI Mobility Radeon 9700) to a MBP C2D 17" 2.33GHz / 2 GB RAM / 256MB VRAM. On my PowerBook I felt Aperture was fast enough for image sorting and metadata editing, but was jerky and slow for image adjustments (especially straightening and cropping), loupe, and full screen scrolling. Also, the PowerBook video card was not up to the task of switching views because it would occasionally get scrambled and then settle down when switching views. I'm VERY happy with the performance of Aperture on the MBP. Adjustments are smooth. Even loading the Masters from a 7200 RPM external drive seems much snappier on the MBP.
From everything I have read, VRAM is most important for anything graphical such as image adjustments, scrolling full screen, loupe. This makes sense to me, and it is why I bought a Radeon X800XT 256MB video card upgrade for my G5. Also, I have read that CPU and RAM are most heavily used for exporting and building previews. Again, this makes sense.
    Good luck with you decision,
    -Karen

  • Hardware profile says 256MB vram but I have MBP with 128MB vram

Today I ran the Apple hardware test from the install CD's and afterwards, I checked out the hardware profile. It said I had a total of 256MB of vram. I have the 2.2ghz MBP model with only 128MB vram, so I'm not sure why it would say 256MB. Can anyone shed some light on this matter? Thanks.

    Here's the answer:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305638
I had that problem too. Secretly hoping that Apple had put a 256mb vram 8600GT card in by mistake haha. ;p

  • Wanting to make the switch to an Apple, but 128MB VRAM is in the way

I'm a Windows user, have been since I got my hands on a computer. I've continued using Windows to cater my gaming hobby, I currently play Counter-Strike: Source and World of Warcraft online on a regular basis. That's it just two games.
My new job allowed me to work with Mac OS X for the first time on one of the new Intel iMacs. From day one I couldn't get over how simple and easy OS X is to use. I just love the software that people make for it too. Always updates coming through with new features to play around with.
I thought the switch to Vista would keep me using Windows, but alas, it has only powered my motivation to 'make the switch'.
So I've decided to sell my gaming rig (that I built from scratch) and replace it with an Apple laptop.
I started looking at the Macbooks first, and was impressed with everything except the lack of a video card. Can't play games without a decent one! Now onto the Macbook Pros, pricey but have everything I want in a laptop. But looking closely, the Macbook 2.2, the one in my price range, actually comes with 128MB less VRAM than the rest.
This 128MB of VRAM is enough to put me off buying a Macbook Pro altogether when other laptops (Dell) come with the 256MB version. Gamers all around have told me 128MB of VRAM is quite a difference when playing games like CS:S and WoW.
I could step up and go for the next model which is the Macbook Pro 2.4, but that's another $800NZD I'm not prepared to pay. $800 all for another 128MB! Of course it has a better chip and more disk space, but I don't need that. All I want is a decent card. I don't want to take the cheaper video solution.
I hope this doesn't sound like a worthless rant, but I really do want a Mac. And because I can't customise like other companies by simply adding a few more dollars to upgrade the video card I find myself swwaying back to a Windows laptop where I'll get that extra grunt to play games.
I feel that Apple have done this so that gamers like myself have to go that extra mile to get a decent graphics solution. My only options are to get a Dell with Windows, which I'm REALLY not keen at all to do - I want Mac OS X! Or to simply wait for the next Macbook Pros to roll in and hope for the best they upgrade that minimum VRAM to 256MB where it should belong.
Can anyone give me some recommendations or just thoughts on what I've written.

What's the class of video cards in the other laptop system you're comparing too? The MacBook Pro uses a nVidia GeForce 8600M GT which is superior much faster then the other CPU's, there is a 256Mb version.... but you have to buy the more expensive model, even then it's cheaper than the top of the range PC equivalent, plus you can run MacOSX on it.. you can't easily do that with a PC unit.

  • 128MB VRAM instead of 256MB on ATI Radeon x1900

I just bought and installed a graphic card ati radeon x1900 mac edition pci-express, 256 MB.
Easily installed and running. However, it registers only 128MB of VRAM.
On ati/amd homepage they this is a Mac issue. Anyone know of this problem or how to solve it?
Question is also if it is a soft- or hardware problem.
    Regards and thanx in advance.

    You're Welcome!
If you download ATIcellerator II, an overclocking utility, using the "Info tab" will tell you how much VRAM the software sees.
BTW, the software is benign, unless used for its purpose- overclocking your card. It's a good utility, but, if one plays with overclocking carelessly, well, you'll be shopping for a new card....

  • Time machine two backup progress panes

    Hi
I have an early 2006 17" MBP (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and recently whilst backing up using Time Machine I am seeing 2 different Time Machine Backup panes which occasionally display different backup amounts as though the backups were out of step (but not by much). I did not see 2 panes previously. The smaller pane only appeared recently. My question is why 2 panes? In my experience this is not normal. I have owned the MBP from new.

  • Tiger Archive and Reinstall - Loss of free HD Space

My eMac was upgraded to Tiger (from OS 10.3.9) two days ago from an install disc I bought from Apple. I used online 'Software Update' to upgrade further to 10.4.9.
My eMac HDD was down to 5.66 gb (out of about 37gb) so I decided to remove a load of "Language files' installed by Tiger to save HD space. I somehow cocked this up by removing the English language files (particularly annoying because I thought I had asked the software not to do this).
Anyway, to rectify the situation I realised that all I needed to do was an 'Archive and Install' from my Tiger disc, then use 'Software Update' again to get back to the position I was in before (after deleting any 'Previous Systems' folder of course).
This is where it all went wrong.
I opened the Tiger Installer and opted for the 'Archive and Install' option. But I got an error message saying I didn't have enough HD space left to do the job. It said I had only 1.65 gb left and I needed to make more space on my HD.
I thought this was weird because I knew I had 5.66gb left on my drive. However when I backed out of the Installer I found that my HD icon on the desktop had changed. It now says I have only 1.66gb space left on my HD.
I am at a loss to know why and where all my HD space has gone. I really need to find out how to locate it all and how to recover it all? Following this I need to know how to run 'Archive and Install' without losing all my HD free pace.
The installer was only working for a few seconds, maybe a minute at the most.
My first thought was look for a 'Previous Systems' folder. I found this but it was only 32kb in size. So I'm missing 4 or 5 gbs.
    Please Help!!!

That did the trick. I followed the advice in your link and downloaded Disk Inventory X. It immediatley showed a big purple block of 4 gigs belonging to Myst V End of Ages that I had just been playing for the first time.
Uninstalling this did the trick. I have the Folder size set to show in the folder name on my desktop. My HD icon could not have been updated for some reason so I thought I had about 6 gigs available when I hadn't. Oh well, never mind. All sorted now.
By the way, my Mac is still working fine, so I must have stopped deleting the English language files in time. So I don't necessarily need to reinstall Tiger just yet it would seem. I will continue to seek out superflous language files and printer drivers though. I need the space.

  • My old TIFFs and JPEGs have end of file errors when Photoshop crashes

I'm using CS3 on a mac duo intel, 10.5.8 OS
My photoshop is frequently crashing, and I am unable to force quit in the finder. Even worse, TIFs and JPGs that aren't even open at the time of the crash are getting corrupted. As for as I can tell, any TIF or JPG that was saved at any time during the session that ended with the crash gets corrupted. Even the versions in Time Machine get corrupted. For instance, Let's say I launched photoshop at 9 am on Monday morning. at 12 pm on Monday, I save and close files X, Y, and Z. At 6 pm on Monday, photoshop crashes. X, Y, and Z are now corrupted. If I check time machine, say for the versions on my drive at 12:30 pm, Monday, they will be corrupted, even though the files were closed half an hour earlier, and the crash didn't happen until 6 pm.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. As you might imagine, I'm ready to pull my hair out.
    thanks,
    Nick

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for responding. That's a little frightening. The only back-up
utility I use is SuperDuper. Could this be causing it?
    Thanks,
    Nick

  • Myst, Riven, and Exile

I loved Myst when it first came out but never found time to play any of the sequels.
QUESTION: Are any of the Myst games compatible with my cool new iMac? I've read a lot about problems with Myst IV and V (Revelation, and End of Ages)...but what about I, II, and III (Myst, Riven, and Exile)? Can I get the Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition to work on this 'mazin' machine I've just fallen in love with or do I have to buy a Windows copy and play it on the old dinosaur?
iMac G5 intel 20" Mac OS X (10.4.6) "Mac newbie at the controls :O" Intuos 6"x8"

Hmmm....I just checked out the "Downloads" section of the Apple site and there's a section that talks about how to use "Classic" programs in OS X "Tiger".
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/classic/
Has anyone tried this? Would this make the 10th Anniversary DVD Edition work on my cool new iMac? Would it run smoothly?
I'm really hoping this would work and not cause other problems in my system. I don't want to crash the computer just for a couple games...even if they are amazingly great games like Myst!
