Mysterious black box outline, f1 thru f12 key commands are jumbled, talking

my teacher came in two days ago complaining of a black box that outlines random places in active screens or active icons, and that her f1 thru f12 key commands weren't working properly....in fact, her volume buttons weren't working at all. we also noticed that some commands were doubled in their lists. for example, shut down and log out appeared twice in the apple drop down list. the next day, her computer began talking to her. what is happening? what should i do?

my teacher did not follow directions. the answer to turn off voice command worked for the black box and f1 thru f12 keys. thank you. if she'd only done it the first time, i would have marked the question answered from my first responder. thank you again!

  • Mysterious black box

my wifes 15in macbook pro running 10.4.8 is displaying a mysterious black box around the selected icon on the desktop. this box transfers to any window i open and is usually around a button, or field window. also, the menu when i click on the apple in the top left, has two options to "force quit" and "force quit finder". two options to restart, two options to shut down, and two options to log out. i have never seen this before. any idea what is going on? she said she didnt change anything in the prefs...

well, i trashed all the prefs. seems to have taken care of it. now i have to start all over with prefs....

  • Key commands are not stored in a separate file

On page 44 in the Logic Reference it says that key commands are stored in a separate preference file.
But that's not right is it? I believe the key commands are stored in the general preferences file for logic.

I believe it's actually a mistake in the manual and in
the way Logic is supposed to work.
I don't, as Logic has stored the key commands within the Logic preferences files since version 1.
What's probably happening is that when you use the setup assistant, the various template key commands (Pro Tools one and so on) are stored in various files. The setup assistant puts the necessary startup template keycommands file into the prefs directory, which when Logic loads, it sees them, parses them and inserts them into the preferences, which then behave like normal.
It saves the setup assistant from accessing Logic's preference files directly.

  • White background transparency and black box outline removal ?

    Hello,
I need to know how to do two things with Illustrator CS (yes, the old version).
First, I need to turn all white areas to transparent. I have two imported images which have white square backgrounds behind their pictures / designs. I need to over-lap a design over another, but the white area / square behind the image is interferring with the other. How do I make all white to be transparent ?
Second, when I remove / hide areas of an image with a white box it has a black outline. How do I remove this black outline?
    Thanks,
    Karl

    1. Better take Photoshop or any other comparable raster programme.
    2. You're probably talking about a black stroke. Read about strokes in the help files.

  • Am I the only one with the mysterious black box?

If more than one AA window is open (9.4.2, Win7)  and I try to draw with a polygon or other graphic tool, a black rectangle begins tracking my cursor, obscurring the graphic line I am trying to create. It grows to the scale of the polygon, etc., but disappears as soon as I stop drawing and the shape becomes inactive.  If more than one window has been opened anytime during a session, and I want to draw, I have to close the program and reboot in order to not have the problem.

    Hi there,
The good news is that M-Audio have just released a new set of drivers. Check out the following support article:
    http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faq&ID=36be2fb74b90752fe3568b07c20a2 189
While this relates specifically to Leopard, perhaps you were falling foul of some driver issue.
Time to try updating your existing drivers and let us know. By the way, no, you were FAR from the only person with this problem. M-Audio have been very slow in getting drivers out. Let's hope this is now a thing of the past.

  • Some key commands are not working

    I have a 2010 MacBook Pro running OS 10.10.2.
When I use cmd/shift/4, nothing happens.  However, these keys work individually.  Similarly, in Pages, hitting cmd/shift/> will zoom the content in the window, but cmd/shift/< will not zoom back out.  I've check my keyboard settings and all of the keys are mapped correctly and set to default settings.  None of them seem stuck down.
Does anyone have any ideas of other things I can check to restore these functions?  Thanks!

Yes, I've done this already.  It looks just like your image.
I rebooted, hoping that would fix it and it did not.  Also, this started before I loaded Yosemite and I was hoping loading it might fix the problem if it was something simple like that.
I checked the apps tab also (I have no apps) but the only one on there was the "show help menu" button and the keys listed for it are not replacing any other commands.

  • Weird Black Box/Cursor Issue

    Greetings,
I fell asleep watching a movie last night and when I wkoe up I had this weird Black Box issue that I can't get rid of. Normally I can come up with search terms to find an answer to the problem but I'm not even sure how to describe this. There is a Black Box outline, generally where the cursor was last, and, in the lower left corner, a black text box with a white outline and white text. At the moment the Black Box is around the Close Button for Firefox and the Black Text Box says "close button". Sometimes it will give a "command-shift-whatever" needed to activate that button. WHen I shift to a finder window it will tell me I am Currently on a Browser etc. Ad Nauseum. As I shift around it will highlight (with the black outline) whereever I am and continute to give me useless advice!!! How do I get rid of this?!?!?!?!???
    Thanks for the time!!!
    Geezer

BINGO!!! That solved the problem!!! Course there remains the mystery of *HOW* those button got pushed while I was sleeping.
    Thanks Dominic!!!

  • Remapping F9- f12 keys on Aluminum Keyboard for Final Cut Pro 6

I'm working through the Apple Pro Training book, "FCP 6: Professional Editing in Final Cut Studio 2", and one of the first things the book recommends is to remap the F9 thru F12 keys for FCP functions. However, I have the new Apple thin aluminum extended keyboard, and those keys are labeled as volume controls, and there doesn't seem to be any way to change them in System Preferences (on previous Apple keyboards, these would be mapped for Dashboard and Exposé). How can I go about this?

In System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse > Keyboard, activate the checkbox for "Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys".
In System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces > Exposé, deactivate Exposé by selecting - (minus) for All Windows, Application Windows and Show Desktop. If you still want to use F keys for Exposé, move them to be in the F13 - F19 range instead. Those keys are not used by FCP. Do the same for Dashboard.
You can use the functions as marked on the buttons by pressing the fn key.

  • Black box highlighting everywhere I click

I came home from work today and found that when I click icons on the desk top there is a black box outlining the icon. It also happens when I'm in safari. When ever I click in a text box a black outline highlights around the text box I'm typing in. My question is this a setting that potentially got changed by one of my nosey siblings or is this a bigger problem.
The second problem I have is when I'm in finder and click the apple at the top of the screen there is two choices for "restart" "shut down" and "log off." For each choice one has three dots after it and the other doesn't. When I click the one with the three dots a box comes up saying "will shutdown/restart in....." and if I select the one that doesn't have the three dots it restarts or shuts down right away. Does anyone know why this is happening and if so what can I do to fix it?
Here are two pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
    Press command+f5
(You turned on VoiceOver by accident at some point)
PS. You can do simple screen grabs via pressing commandshift4 rather than photographing your screen

  • Odd black box displays

A black box outline started appearing and surrounds whatever icon or field I select or just shows up randomly. Don't know if there's any relationship, but I had been working in photoshop, setting actions, just before this happened.
I've repaired permissions, rebooted - didn't help. I read on an old archived post that someone else with this problem had a corrupted user account and had to set up a new user account and move settings over. How do I move settings over and also have all the same permissions and do this in the most efficient least painful way?
This is happening on my G5, OSX.4.6
    PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   G4 SP 450, 1GB SDRAM OSX.3.9, G5 dual 2.3, 3.5GB SDRAM OSX 4.6

This had been annoying me for a couple of days, tried everything apart from a clean installation.
I can't remember changing any of the Universal Access settings before this started happening and I can't remember installing any software that might have changed any of these settings.
But thanks for the solution, I can regain my sanity again!

  • Key command for "undo" not customizable anymore?

    Hi!
In the LP8 manual the key cmd. for "undo" is claimed to be exchangeable by the user, but it is not (dimmed).
I used to set it to <cmd.-y) - similar to protools, because <cmd.-z> is a rel cripple grip.
it still works with importing my old LP7 prefs, but is reset to <cmd.-z> each time I launch LP8 again.
    Help!
    cheers!

Apple probably made this move because it's universal among all of Apple's apps (and generally accepted throughout most applications for the Mac).
hm - final cut's key commands are fully custumizable, too (at least until FCP5) wich is an apple app even more than logic.
an other reason might be this: when setting for example <y> for undo in LP7, you can't use the y in the save-as.. dialog box for naming anymore, because the y will be interpreted as undo. that's why I chose <cmd.-y>.
and why restricting only the system shortcuts if there was the "danger" of getting too familiar with those, what about "stop", "play", "rew", "mute", "solo", "divide", etc.? those commands exist in other apple apps as well.
I must admit, that I am just too clumsy for typing <cmd.-z> on a german keyboard more than twice a month. but my editing temper requires a lot more.
where to get detailed instructions for changing the system shortcuts in general?
    cheers!

  • Key commands not showing up in KC window

Today I decided to attempt to get to the bottom of this problem. Since installing 7.1 my key commands are next to useless in terms of having the assigned commands show up in the key command window. Some of the commands show up when the relevent key is pressed but many don't. For instance, I have the letter "R" assigned to "repeat objects", when I press the "R" key nothing shows up in the KC window. If I reassign "repeat objects" to the "Q" key then when I press the "Q" key nothing shows up. Conversely if I assign the "R" key to "destructive quantise" then it does show up. IOW, if I assign any key to "repeat objects" the assigned key never shows up as highlighted in the KC window. This same behaviour shows up for many keys.
I installed on a fresh partition: 10,4,2, Logic7.1, Pro runtime app and find the exact same results. I've tried switching keyboard layouts from UK to American to German - no change.
Can anyone confirm that "repeat objects" shows up as highlighted when the relevent key is pressed in the KC wondow?
    Cheers.

    Hi RajShekhar,
This KF that you have added as an attribute to a char will not be available in the Key Figure section. Open the dimensions and find the char for which you created this attribute. Open up the attributes under it and you should find the KF. If you need to use this KF value in a calculation, then you will need to create a formula variable to pull in its value.
    Hope this helps...

  • How can i save my key commands???

    Please help!
There is Import Key Command... only in option menu(no Save)
So how can i save my KC and what type of file is?

    HD>(users)>Library>Preferences>Logic>>> com.apple.logic.pro
that's the file where your Key commands are saved .
if you can not find it this way, just type>>>
    com.apple.logic.pro in Spotlight.

  • Strange Key Commands Issue - Please Help

I understand how to make/delete and export key commands.
I made a key command preference that I like that doesn't involve the screen set key commands ... herein lies the issue.
I delete the commands (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) that are assigned to screen sets because I want to use them for other things. I save the preset. If I keep logic open everything is hunky dory, but if I close logic and re-open it the screen set key commands are suddenly part of my preset again.
    I'm running Logic 8 btw.
I thought Logic might automatically be initializing it's key commands from their provided key commands list, but after removing them I found that was not the case.
I also tried deleting my com.apple.logic.pro.plist file but still the screen set key commands keep showing up.
Does anyone know a way to keep Logic from adding them back into the key commands everytime I start it up?

instead of using "learn by key label" I used "learn by key position" and then the numbers on the number pad can be whatever I want!
    YESSSSSS.
    thanks again for your help!
LOL, OK, you never mentioned the keypad... I just assumed you were after the top row number keys... but those on the numpad are indeed available (or set in limestone). Good persistance! And thanks for reporting your solution.

  • Are the default key commands completely different in L9 compared to L8?

    Hi Guys,
I have had to reset my key commands to the defaults, and seem to have lost all my old key commands.
My commands with Logic 8 were the absolute default ones (I didn't change any of them!!) - here are some of the ones I used a lot:
Pressing 0 on the numeric keyboard was always stop. "/" on the numeric keyboard was always cycle on/cycle off.
Pressing control and using the up/down/left/ right arrows (the ones in between the QWERTY keyboard and the number pad) always zoomed in and out, vertically and horizontally respectively...
Pressing the "C" key was always click on/click off. Now it's cycle on/off.
My question is... can someone confirm that the Logic 9 default key commands are completely different, and that these shortcuts above have all gone?
I know I can set them up again, I guess I'm just puzzled that so many of the main commands would completely change their defaults for L9!
    Cheers and thanks,
    Mike

Some of the more in-depth key commands have changed slightly , but the standard ones are still the same.
Most of these you've described are ( or should be still ) exactly the same.
Make sure that you are still using the standard keyboard layout and language in *'Apple/system preferences/international/input menu'*
Mine swiched to German a few months ago and I had no idea what was going on.
